2023.06.01 01:47 XenosGTZ high schooler looking for 180k+ salary and work-life balance

hi!
I know I'm only a high schooler, but I've been looking into different career options and want to better prepare myself for the future.
Honestly, my main motivation is money. helping people is nice and it's really fulfilling to me, but I'd rather make some good money.
I want a career where I will have good work-life balance (40-50hrs per week) and make a high salary (around 180k and above) in a medium cost of living city. Ideally i'd like to achieve 200k after maybe 5 years of working. again, salary is for mcol city. I want to get money and settle down in one place with a family and not need to burden myself with just work. i also don't want to spend my whole 20s studying and want to get to work asap (bachelors + masters is fine).
I'd regard myself to be a very good student (tons of APs, one of the highest GPAs and class rankings in my class, and 1500+ SAT). and i'm not super obssessed with grades and stuff, I'm also very involved in clubs (founded a badminton club at my school, members of some others), volunteer a lot, have a decent social life, workout + gym..etc.). you could say i'm pretty smart academically and am well-off socially.
i've done internships and programs to explore a variety of fields. I've shadowed and interned under doctors, done internships at cs and fintech companies, done dental + med programs at my local uni, participated in debate and model un, and done courses related to several fields. basically i have experience in a bunch of fields. i enjoyed everything i did and enjoyed the interactions, challenges, and obstacles each experience gave me.
here are some careers I have considered, and why I have decided against them or for them..
  1. Doctors: there is wayyy too much studying and i don't want to spend my 20s studying, i already know im going to develop a very unhealthy lifestyle if i go to med school. i want to help people but i want to get into career asap and start making money early and medicine won't be it for me.
  2. CS: this is my top option rn because of its good work life balance and good salary. idk for sure though because from what ive seen there are only a few companies that give high salaries and these companies will make u work a lot if you want those salaries, so it might not be best work life balance. note: i was thinking of maybe going into management or something after a few years so taht i dont have to program all day.
  3. IB and Consulting: these guys make BANK but work a TON of hours for their salaries and their WLB is very bad
  4. Law: people say law is good but honselty according to the salaries ive seen it's not THAT high paying, like averages are under 100k and if you want big salaries you have to be in Big Law which is extremely competitive
  5. Sales: i liked the idea of sales but its salary is not really constant.. from what ive read, sometimes people can make 40k a year and sometimes 700k, and im not a fan of that.
  6. Dentistry: i can start working at 26 yrs old which is quiet great but is dental school worth the debt and salary i'll get as a dentist? i want to maybe own my own office, idk how hard that'll be though
  7. CRNA: seemed like a really good option bc they can easily make 200k, but they need a DNP now so i'll become crna at 28 yrs old. idk if the debt and considerably large number of years of studying is worth the salary
essentially i want a career where I don't have to study for a bunch of my 20s, don't need to work like crazy after getting a job, have decent work life balance, make good money, and don't have to be insanely smart in my field (hedge funds and big law). don;t get me wrong i am quite smart but not insane.
also please don't say "do what you like money doesn't matter" i agree with that i just want to explore different fields i'll only do it if i like it. idk if all the information ive said is completely correct so please correct me if im wrong
thank you!

2023.06.01 01:38 PuneQuencher99 23 years old, finding it very hard to figure out what I want to do

I don’t even know where to begin. There’s just nothing that I have an actual interest in that can be turned into an everyday normal career. I like cars, hockey, video games to name a few, but hockey is very hard to get into as a coach who makes salary, you’d have to be lucky to be able to make a career out of video games that doesn’t consist of making them or writing them with degrees, and I don’t want to be a sales person or mechanic on cars I would just want to travel and review them, which also consists of becoming lucky and growing on a social media platform as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve looked into trade jobs like steamfitting, welding, and plumbing, all of which I would be alright with attempting, but none of which I have an actual 100% interest in. I’ve debated the military, but I decided that it’s just not a route I want to go.
I have experience with warehouse like jobs and grocery store sales floor experience that I could hypothetically take into a management position and grow in that field, but unfortunately with where I’m located there aren’t a lot of openings for that route, and I’m not really in a financial position to up and move to find it somewhere else.
I’m not “worried” per say, because I am young and have time, but I am getting to the point where I’m over the crappy small jobs like stocking shelves at a grocery store and really trying to find a career that I’ll make real money with.

2023.06.01 01:37 Rosie-The-Roboto Have I done enough for Ukraine?

Salut from Canada 🇨🇦
As a subdued supporter, my connection to Ukraine is rather limited, stemming from acquaintances I made during a past exchange year, long ago.
When the full-scale war began, a large number of people were gathering funds for Ukraine, collecting cash in cans at the local market to channel donations to the embassy. It was a chaotic situation. Having a remarkable hunk of a prime minister, much like yours, also helped ;-)
It became overwhelming at a certain point. It was quite a challenge to explain this to my boys. Trying to make them understand why some men can be so wicked. I made the decision to donate an entire month's worth of my post-tax salary. However, I can't help but wonder if my contribution had any significant impact. You see, during that time, my focus was on recruiting engineers to Canada.
Initially, our primary focus was to assist young professionals seeking refuge from Ukraine. Unfortunately, the majority of the hires were always men, whereas most of those who had fled were women.
After a month, we noticed a significant trend among Ukrainian men who were predominantly seeking remote contrat. Meanwhile, there was a notable surge in the number of "good Russians." The situation became such that our clients ended up hiring approximately 10 Russians for every 1 Ukrainian candidate.
As time went on, the situation took a more cynical turn. While the initial intention was to support Russian individuals who likely protested against the dick-tator and had to flee, by the middle of summer, hiring managers began requesting a prioritization of Russian applicants. Their reasoning was that these individuals were desperate and could be hired at lower costs.
Furthermore, it's worth noting that Huawei remains fully operational in Russia, actively employing and recruiting engineers. I have personally conducted screening calls with two applicants who were working at Huawei during that time, and they explicitly mentioned their current association with the company.
I've moved on from that job. In the end, I wasn't fond of the impact it had, ya know? So now, I've switched gears and found my calling in the veterinary field. It's a path that makes me feel proud, and it's something my children can truly be proud of too.
So, have I done sufficient?

2023.06.01 01:35 EstablishmentThat142 Cash Flows: A Quick Guide

There’s a lot of beginners in this sub. When I was starting out I would have loved a quick simple guide like this. So I hope you can find some value in this post.
For the more experienced among us, please contribute if there is anything you would like to add.
This is just a quick guide, and there is much more required to form an accurate picture of a company’s investment potential than what is stated below.

Importance of Cash Flow Analysis:

As investors we need a clear picture of a company's liquidity and its ability to meet financial obligations. Looking for companies with positive cash flow shows the company's ability to generate cash from its core operations, which is essential for sustainable growth. By examining the cash flow statement, we as potential investors can assess how effectively a company manages its cash resources. It highlights areas where cash may be tied up, such as inventory or accounts receivable, and helps identify potential bottlenecks or inefficiencies. We can also use cash flow analysis to predict a company's future financial performance. By looking at historical cash flow patterns and trends, we can gain insights into the company's future potential and its ability to fund future investments or navigate and survive recessive economic periods.

Components of Cash Flow Analysis:

Tools and Ratios for Cash Flow Analysis:

Example
Let's say Google has an operating cash flow of $70m and current liabilities of $25m. Meaning the Operating Cash Flow Ratio would be 2.8.
A ratio of 1 or higher is generally considered favorable, as it suggests that the company has sufficient operating cash flow to cover its current liabilities. The higher the ratio the better.
Example
Let’s say Google’s operating cash-flow is $70m again, but its capital expenditures are $68.9m. Meaning there is only $1.1m of free cash-flow. Although this is positive, it’s not favourable as it shows little room for growth over the next yeaquarter. To help us understand if this is normal we would want to look at historical data. You want a large positive difference in Free Cash Flow and you want to see it consistently across current and historical cash-flow statements.

Cash Flow Analysis for Surviving Recessions

I hope this clarifies some things for the newcomers/beginners. Let’s get a discussion going below about what you look for in cash-flow statements. :)

2023.06.01 01:28 Character_Economy928 I got laid off a month ago from Big 4 and just got a job offer for $105k today. A 60% increase in salary. I’m 24 years old and it feels insane

It’s actually crazy that people were right in saying it will be okay. I thought I was screwed entirely, and didn’t apply for 2 weeks.
I finally just started going for positions that I didn’t even think I was qualified for, but had 10 interviews lined up in 2 days.
I had my first second round with my dream company, and somehow the hiring manager and CFO came back in that interview room and said “let’s talk salary”.
Had a major poker face during negotiations, and even got an email after I got home saying they bumped up compensation $5k as incentive to join.
Sometimes getting canned really does work out.

TLDR: [IN] Have you ever rescinded a job offer because someone tried to negotiate salary?
I’m 27, newly graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs, major was business management. I graduated with highest honors. I have more work and life experience than most recent grads that are 21.
I did 3 rounds of interviews for a position. In the 1st they asked about salary expectations and I told them 60k. They said they were hiring people in a lower rate but they’d send me their amazing benefits package. I was sent a simple overview just saying they provide health insurance and 401 matching etc. I went on with interviews and after the last one I was told by the hiring manager that I had glowing reviews from my interviews and that my would-be supervisor directly noted that they wanted me to be the person to fill the role. They then gave me an offer or 52,500$ and I told her that I would need a comprehensive benefits package to know for sure if I wanted to accept. Upon review, the health insurance premiums were more than 500 a month for me and my child. That new knowledge along with the fact they wanted me to commute 150 miles (3 hour round trip), and knowing they really wanted to hire me really pushed me to negotiate that higher salary. I asked for 60k instead of 52,500 as you can see. She was responsive at first, said she needed to ask someone higher up and would eat me know by the end of that week. At the end of the week she said, that person had unexpectedly been out of office and she would let me know within another week when that person is back. Today, she responded rescinding the offer. Is this normal?

If you coming to Portugal to work in Bairro Alto for a French company (for FR, PT, BR, IT SP market)... Just run! Don't look back, don't accept the job... Be intelligent
Is a young environment, but most of the clients are pissed, they pay late salaries, they aren't transparents and use always the same excuse... One of the managers is toxic, possessive and fake! The Head of sales and Cs will indirectly say "that's your fault"
So be careful! Is not a paradise, you can find better places to work!

2023.06.01 01:11 The-Catapoo Employer changing notice period

I’ve worked for my company 2 years. All of a sudden they’ve said we all have to have a 3 month notice period from a 1 month notice period. I work in an operations role which I don’t believe needs to have a 3 month notice period. We have senior managers and sales managers on x3 the salary we earn and on the exact same notice period.
I am really angry about this. There is no clause in my contract either saying that it is ok to change this.
Myself and my team have said we are not happy with this amendment to our contract. Our contract only states a 1 month notice period so I don’t know why they think they can tell us otherwise.
We had an email saying “we are delighted to tell you after discussion that your notice period is now 3 months”. Nobody had a discussion regarding this and no one is happy.
However our employer keeps saying it is a good thing as it is “job security” . I strongly disagree and I am fuming about this. I have a meeting with the manager on Friday. I just want to know your thoughts and what you would say to the manager is this situation?

2023.06.01 01:04 Seymourowl81 Considering leaving community mental health

Hi, I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this question- the problem is that in my real life, the majority of the therapists I know are co-workers, and so I don’t feel like I have anyone to talk to about the possibility of leaving my job that I want to know I am considering it. I have been working in community mental health for years and am now a clinical supervisor- I supervise other clinicians, see my own caseload, and do some unpleasant middle management stuff. I work in a state where social workers, particularly LCSWs, are paid comparatively well, so I make a decent salary. And because I’ve been at my job for a while and have seniority, I have SOME flexibility with my schedule. However, we recently returned to the office after working from home throughout the pandemic, and I am finding that I don’t have Enough flexibility. I have two little kids and I feel like working from home was the one thing allowing me to achieve some semblance of work/life balance and sanity. Now that I’m back full time I am really struggling, not to mention that the job itself is intensely burning me out. Anyway, all of this is to say that I am considering looking for a position in a group practice where I would have some more control over my schedule and possibly even the option of a hybrid model. But the problem is that I am the main breadwinner in my family, not to mention the one who gets our insurance. So what my question boils down to is- would it be realistic to think I could make an equivalent amount of money in a group practice, even after paying for insurance, to what I make at an agency? And would making an equivalent amount require me to see so many clients that I basically wouldn’t have the flexibility/time at home that I would be looking for? Any thoughts would be extremely helpful.

2023.06.01 01:03 ThrowRAsaddie I messed up when I negotiated my job compensation. I need help with how to go about backtracking professionally w/o sounding greedy.

I just accepted a job as a General Manager of a coffee shop/cafe/event space.
Originally they offered me 91k base and 4% from pre-tax full-cafe buyout events.
At my previous job full buyouts happened very rarely but we had many events in our Private Dining Room very often. This place has a PDR and a rooftop, so I assumed that’s where the majority events happen and I would be missing out on a lot of money if it’s just full-cafe buyouts. So I suggested 95k salary and 5% of all events. They came back with 95k salary and 2.5% of all events and I assumed that this is still more than 4% of just full-cafe buyouts, so I accepted.
Today was my first day and when I went through financials and past/projected, I saw that 90% of all events are full buyouts… and I negotiated my bonus down from about 25k/year to 15-17k/year….
How would you go about getting the 1st offer back? Would you ask right away or wait a little while?

2023.06.01 00:59 WorkingMommah08 TAKING CIA EXAM AT MID 30s

I'm an Internal Auditor for a decade now, underpaid but not to overworked. My salary is 30k+ too small but can't complain because my job is too chill I do everything in my own pace not until this year when the Management is pushing me to produce more audit reports without an increase. I am the DPO, and handling also the QMSC. I'm thinking of taking CIA exam so I can move forward and get out of the cell i'm in. I have this feeling that my career is not growing amd moving forward. I feel stuck. Am I too old to take the CIA exam? Is it hard? Where will I start? Please help!!!

2023.06.01 00:57 Phil_deeez Which is a better path to leadership in local government?

I currently serve as a Director of Public Services (water, sewer, sanitation, streets & grounds, stormwater) for a small city of 7,500 people and 2.5 sq. miles. Recently I was offered the position of Public Work Director (roads, bridges, stormwater, and environmental services) for the county I live in serving a population of 137,000 people and 550 sq. miles. Upon informing my current employer, I was countered with the position of Director of Planning and Zoning with a hybrid schedule for a few years.
The new positions would increase my salary $10k and have a more structured work schedule and the planning job would be similar to my current salary but less time in office.
My goal is to become a city manager or county administrator. Does anyone have advice on which job would facilitate that career path bettefaster?

2023.06.01 00:50 little_bastard69 Haven’t received promised pay rise for 9 months

Hi everyone, i’m really hoping someone could help me, i work for a very large customer services company who service a multi billion insurance company. (England) I was promoted to a new team back in September time along with 1 colleague, we were both told a pay rise would come with this new job, however after months upon months of being told ‘I’m sorry HR are still trying to sort it - you’ll get it next pay day’ - this month our manager received an email confirming it had gone through for both of us.
Unfortunately, after looking at our payslips, we discovered my colleague had received the backdated pay rise, but i hadn’t. As you can imagine i’m really not happy - i won’t go into detail but i am facing a lot of detriment due to this, after being told the pay rise would go through this month, i made financial commitments meaning i have to now borrow money.
My managers have been no help, they have been in contact with HR who ‘are looking into it’. I have already said there is no way i am being made to wait another month for this, 9 months not being paid properly for the job i do has really taken a toll.
I have contacted a higher up manager today who i am waiting on to get back to me, hopefully they can provide some guidance however i really would appreciate peoples thoughts on this? Are my company breaking any rules? when i google it it references my contract a lot - the best part about this is i didn’t get a new contract when i moved jobs and it still quotes my previous salary. But due to my colleague getting the pay rise and also having the old contract i can’t see that this is the reason. My partner and a few others suggested i get signed off by the doctor for stress until this goes through which i don’t know is a good option?

Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE: PAAS) (TSX: PAAS) ("Pan American" or the "Company") today released its 2022 Sustainability Report (the "Report") describing Pan American's approach and performance in the areas of environment, social and governance ("ESG") in 2022. The Report also includes our 2023 goals for ESG performance. A Spanish version of the Report will be released shortly.
Highlights of Pan American's 2022 ESG performance include:
  • Reduced greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions by 19% compared to the 2022 base case 1
  • Reduced water use by 14% compared to the 2022 base case 1
  • Secured renewable energy supply at both our operations in Mexico.
  • Invested $14.7 million in local communities. In addition, Pan American spent approximately $1.4 billion on wages, supplies, services and taxes, benefiting the national, regional and local economies where our operations are located.
  • Launched 'Future PAAS', a one-year professional internship program designed to attract and develop young talent for careers at Pan American.
(1) The 2022 base case was our projected 2022 water use, energy use, GHG emissions, and waste generation, as calculated using our life of mine plans adjusted for annual production guidance.
The Report has been prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative ("GRI") Standards, including the GRI Mining & Metals Sector Disclosures, and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board ("SASB") Standard. The Report also takes into consideration the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures ("TCFD") framework.
The acquisition of Yamana Gold Inc. ("Yamana"), which was completed on March 31, 2023, will allow Pan American to leverage the best sustainability practices of both companies and to enhance the development of long-term ESG goals. The 2022 Report focuses on the assets that the Company owned in 2022 and excludes reporting on any of the assets acquired from Yamana. The 2023 Sustainability Report, which will be issued in 2024, will incorporate information on the assets from the Yamana acquisition.
