2023.05.31 23:27 JonathanRedding Ghost Word Pt 1.
Hello all! I'm a screenwriter and longtime lover of horror prose, taking some time during the strike to polish up old unpublished pieces and maybe embark on some new ones. This is the first I'm sharing publicly -- it's a nasty piece of work, about a nasty little man who receives a power he really shouldn't have. Most of my stories aren't like this, but Lyle Hereford insisted upon himself, and I haven't yet managed to forget him. It's also a bit lengthy, about 8600 words (30ish manuscript pages). I'm posting it in two parts.
WARNING: This story contains depictions of non-consensual sex and gun violence.
GHOST WORD
By Jonathan Redding
-----------
ghost word
1. (noun) A previously unknown word appearing in a dictionary or list of words, often by error--but sometimes by design.
-----------
Lyle Hereford laid there, slick and frightened, and thought about the Word.
He rolled his head to the right, to the nightstand beside his narrow bed, saw the flat green numerals pronounce it 3:17AM. On another night he might have thought of the Gospel According to John, at that hour, or more obscurely, of the Weird Sisters, of the Walpurgisnacht. Sleeplessness was a condition of his pinched, brittle being. Tonight he lay there sweating, insomnia buzzing in his thighs, his hamstrings. The inevitable heartburn seethed in his concave chest, and he thought about the Word.
The Word was not with him.
He thought about it sitting, inert, on the small rolling desk, in his office, across the city. Thought about the urban glow, blotting out the stars, seeping in the window, slanting though the low-bid venetian blinds the first contractors must have installed and none of those cheap bastards at the University ever bothered to replace, the blinds that always tear at their thin top fixtures, that Lyle mends with tight sleeves of Scotch tape. He thought about the city’s ambient nightlight seeping in, and falling, across the side desk, across the Word. He thought about the binding. Cream, once, probably, soft and blameless. Faded to no-color, now. An old traveler. But what was it? And how had it come to be there? How did it come to rest on that shelf, that groaning, overburdened, mid-century plank?
Lyle imagined someone slipping into the library, furtive, mounting the stair, the tome swinging against them, tucked in a messenger bag. Some faceless someone, head down, hood up, sunglasses in the dim. Lyle pictured them skirting around the encyclopedias and the medieval histories and bypassing the long rows of technical manuals and the corridors of Euclidean geometry and enzymology and theoretical economics and arriving at the neglected, quaint, neat rows of purest Reference: the Dictionaries.
Lyle had gone to consult the Oxford English Dictionary. Specifically the 1989 Second Edition, magnificent in twenty volumes; a tool with which he insisted each of his students familiarize themselves. On this day he had sought out the second volume specifically, the one beginning with B.B.C.
James, that young Turk, had challenged his interpretation of a passage of Taming of the Shrew. It turned on the etymology of the word bonnie.
Tried to score off me, in front of the whole class, that smug little prick.
James, graduate student par excellence. James of the falling black hair, perpetually obscuring his face, terminating above his perfect smile. James who was such a favorite among the bouncing, giggling undergraduates. James who found it easy to excel, in any environment, who found it very difficult to accept Lyle’s criticisms, Lyle’s guidance. James was many things Lyle was not, had never been, and Lyle knew it. But James had not yet learned to survive in academia. James was going to discover that you did not score points off Lyle Hereford, Ph.D., and Lyle would see to it that it happened painfully. In the town square, as it were. It would have to be just a touch humiliating.
`Darby, especially, Lyle thought. She has to see it. Yes. Just the right amount of condescension to really cut into him, to make it memorable.
Only Lyle never found his ammunition in the second volume beginning with B.B.C. because his interest was diverted. He never queried the etymology of bonnie in the compressed italics of lexicalese, never perused the examples from John Donne and Sir Thomas Aquinas and the Cursor Mundi behind their truncated century marks, because something else caught his eye. Something that shouldn’t have been there. Tucked in between the seventh and eighth volumes (Interval and Look, respectively, he knew) was a tattered book, somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred pages, grayed to nothing, the color of a shroud. Lyle reached down, placed his index finger atop the book’s spine, and drew it from the shelf. He gave it a cursory glance—the cover lettering had been savaged by time, but fragments of the lower half survived:
PART A—ANT
#
OXFO D
1877
“What in the world,” Lyle said. The library swallowed the sound, took it into the mute stillness of itself, into its hush. What he held in his hands was not genuine—could not be genuine. The original OED was printed like this, piecemeal, in what were called fascicles.
But not this soon, God, not this soon! They hadn’t even started!
The first fascicle of the OED, the very first product of their seventy-year odyssey, the publication that made the London philologia realize they had bit off quite a bit more than they could chew, was designated A-Ant. It was a rare bird, a thing to be coveted. It was valuable.
It was first printed in 1884.
Lyle had always thought it a clever, tiny nod of Orwell’s, lost to the mass of readers: that the OED should rule for a century, before Newspeak replaced it. This, then, if it was what it purported to be, what the front cover claimed it to be, was early. Seven whole years early.
A misprint, he thought. Has to be. That would change the valuation—this could be one-of-a-kind. Not that Lyle would dream of selling such a book. Before this moment, he wouldn’t even have allowed himself to dream of holding such a book. He checked for a barcode, a borrower’s card. He found neither. What is it DOING here?
He had let it fall open at random, there, among the stacks, a single water-damaged page stood up like a cowlick, he gingerly pressed it flat. The type within was much more preserved than the weathered front-plating. He scanned, gliding over the forms: aglist, aglitter, aglomerular, aglopened, aglossal, aglow-
That was when he had seen the Word.
Though it wasn’t the Word itself, that had drawn his attention. It was the empty white, beneath it. The dictionary game was all about spatial economy. Column inches and abbreviations. In forty-seven years of nebbish quietude, forty-seven years of slow vanishing into a wilderness of text, Lyle Hereford, Ph.D., had never encountered empty white space in the body of a dictionary. Thus, first, the white. Then he had looked above it.
The Word did not begin with the letter “A”.
The Word did not conform to any structural schema that Lyle recognized. There was no easily discernible root in the Romance lineage, nor the Germanic, nor even the primordial Oriental or Sanskrit Anglicizations which the casual peruser of the Mahabharata or of Patanjali’s Sutras might intuitively place. The Word began with the character “X”, and proceeded from there to a feral enjambment of consonants and choked, almost Hebraic “Y’s”. It possessed no other vowels. Merely the Word, this strange word, had greeted Lyle. No origin, pronunciation, part-of-speech. No definition. Merely the Word, and the white beneath, there in the stacks.
Lyle brushed his thumb across the Word. Looking back, now, he couldn’t really say why. It was the sort of automatic, immediate impulse that you don’t question until it’s complete. It came over him like a yawn. He felt the thin whisper of the paper beneath his skin, he traced the Word from its first syllable to its eighth and final and
“FUCK— “
A kind of WRETCH, a spasm, behind his eyes, within his temples, his core, the cilia of his inner ears. His stomach flopped over queasily in his abdomen and he clenched his ass, just ahead of a hot dart of pressure, a hot sharp dart of pressure, gas and a tincture of liquid, a foul egg smell, he fought to hold it—
“fuckfuckfuck— “
Tremoring in his calves, his whole body strained, the feeble musculature flared from his neck, his weak chin pressed down and his gorge rose. Warm coppery blood pattered and trickled over his lips. Lyle’s nose was bleeding. The fit—whatever it was—began to pass, and Lyle looked down through watering eyes to the object in his hands.
“What in the Christ-?”
The library remained silent, the book remained still, the Word remained inscrutable. He noticed the spatter, low on the page, of his blood, obscuring the column inches, smearing over agnathous. He gathered up a shirt cuff in his hand, squeezed it to his nose—that’s never coming out—and awkwardly sat, pooling the book in his lap. He reached down with his other cuff to dab at the page, mitigate the damage. That is when, Lyle now thought, he may have gone mad.
The beads of blood began to crawl up the page.
The traversal of the droplets wasn’t smooth, wasn’t a rolling. They jerked upward in spurs—they forked, like lightning. They crept laterally, then cut upward again, the spastic scribbling of an unseen hand. Lyle became aware that his body was rigid, his breath held, his eyes dry and pained, he stared unblinking. Sweat stood out on the crenellations of his widow’s peak, his acne-scarred brow. His ruptured sinus oozed, his sleeve was warm and sodden. The bloodbolts reached the inexplicable white gap. Swirled into the emptiness. Beneath the Word the blood swirled. It arranged itself.
It formed shapes.
It formed letters.
Lyle had made a sound, then, something between a sob and a laugh and a scream—
—snakebit it’s a snakebit sound—
—rupturing the stillness, a harsh throaty sound, reeding through the library, and then he clapped the book shut and fled.
“But I didn’t drop it, did I?” he asked the green numerals. They showed 4:07AM. Time always slid, on sleepless nights. He thought it one of their worst qualities.
“I ran. I ran from it. But my hands… my hands wouldn’t let it go.”
Lyle sat up in bed. Only when the sheets peeled away from his back did he realize he was perspiring. He stripped the damp bedclothes and shambled across the room, to his small closet. He bent to his hamper, deposited the sheets inside, closed the latch with a discrete click. He took a fresh button-up and crisp slacks down from their hangers, and he began to dress.
#
Lyle barely heard as the starter of his aging Acura chugged, and whinnied, and finally caught. He floated across town, the CD player in the dash resumed Rachmaninov’s Prelude in C sharp minor, the volume hovered at the bottom edge of audibility. It did not pierce the veil of Lyle’s exhaustion. His memory, the vision of the mounting blood, felt unreal. The marine layer had rolled in with the night’s cool, heightening the strangeness. Occasionally headlights swam up out of the fog, the vague shapes of alien drivers flickered and were gone. Lyle had passed through a membrane—a glass, darkly—and everything normal was rendered strange, as though the laws underpinning the universe had grown suddenly elastic. His fatigue coupled with the new fact of the Word to cast a surreal pall over the familiar streets. He wondered, at each car he passed, about the journey of the driver. Was it possible that just beneath the frequency of his attention there was a whole world of men on grim, predawn errands? Men confronting mad and impossible things, men fallen through unsuspected cracks in their comfortable facade? And just where in the wild blue fuck had it come from?
Lyle made it, not without difficulty, to the faculty lot. He parked askew—someone’s sure to bitch about that he thought, and tittered—and walked his scuttling walk across the plaza toward the Humanities complex, fumbling for his keycard. His footsteps seemed to echo off of nothing but haze. The fog encroached, he felt as though it watched him.
His office was a shabby, cramped afterthought on the fourth floor. He turned the bolt behind him as he entered, resting his weary head against the door. He thumped it, once—his forehead, that is—against the wood. He crossed to his chair, the brown faux leather cracked and peeling, and sat heavily. The office was cheaply appointed, but pristine. No tchotchkes or personal touches were in evidence, with the exception of some of Lyle’s own (stark, black-and-white) photography. The book he had found, the impossible book, was not alphabetized on his shelves with the others. It sat alone. Nothing shared, with it, the small rolling side-desk, which Lyle pulled to himself. He reached for the book, heart pounding, hands tremoring. He breathed deeply, closed his eyes. Mastered himself. By and by, the shaking passed. He opened his eyes to look, again, upon the Word.
First there’s fear, of course there’s fear, but then... but then....
Then, perhaps, there was room for curiosity. He had found this thing, this extraordinary thing, or perhaps, just possibly…
“It found me. Maybe it was--meant. For me.”
And if it were, that might make it—would make it—the first thing, the first special thing, that had ever been meant, for Lyle Hereford, Ph.D. He opened the book, the tremor in his hands barely perceptible, now. He sought out the Ag’s—aglow, aglist, aglitter—and found them easily enough. He stared, eyes bulging, straining, at the page.
The Word was gone.
Nothing. No fractal X’s and Y’s, no phantom space, no broken line. Smooth, black column inches, the rhythms of the dictionary, nothing out of place.
“No—no, no, no—” Lyle flipped the page, aggressively, almost tearing it from the binding, another, another, flipped them, faster and faster, scanning, rapidly scanning, seeking white space.
“No, fuck you, no, it was here, you were just here, I didn’t imagine you you cocksucker come back here and talk to me— “
He flipped forward, the opposite direction, toward the front of the fascicle, when he felt something under the pad of his thumb. It was—a shift in the texture, a vibration—a definite, awful, sly little movement. He felt the thing change, somehow. Lyle froze. He held perfectly still—snake, snake in my hands, subtle subtle snake—then he slid his thumb, just his thumb, the tiniest hair, a fraction of an inch, over the page-ends. Rasped his thumb, along the margin of the book. Something, there’s something, right there—he rasped again. Felt it. Toward the back. A water-damaged page. Lyle seized on it, almost eagerly, letting the book part around it. It stood up like a cowlick. He pressed it carefully down, closed his eyes. Lyle felt a curious swirl of anxiety and hope. He was afraid. Afraid to see it again.
He needed to see it again. He needed to know.
He opened his eyes. He scanned the page, now, a completely different section of the fascicle. Amputee, ampyx, amrel, amrita, amry, amsel. Faster, faster…
There.
Crowded into the bottom-right corner. An empty, white space. Above it, a Word.
A different Word.
This one began with an LN, and to the litany of Y’s had been added double-Us. The same layout: no explicatory text below, nothing else. The single, unpronounceable Word.
“There you are,” Lyle whispered. He turned to his computer, felt for the green button along the back of his monitor, pressed it. He thumbed the spacebar on his keyboard. The desktop awoke mid a staccato burst of tiny electronic clicks, followed by the usual cheery synth-tone. Lyle set a yellow legal pad on his lap, popped the well-chewed end of a mechanical pencil into his mouth, clenched it between his teeth. He tugged open a gray metal desk drawer, hideous and utilitarian, pawed around inside until he found what he wanted, closed it again. He turned back to the Word.
“Tell me a secret,” he said. His voice was queerly pitched, hollow. He hardly recognized it. He held up the small object taken from his desk, held it up above the page, showed it to the Word. It was a pushpin. Tell me. Lyle pricked the ball of his middle finger, blood welled into a fat bead. He turned his hand over, held the blood above the white, watched it distend, watched it fall. This time there was no lightning, no crawl. This time it sizzled, as though he had dropped it on a skillet. It sizzled, bubbled, on the white, then separated, it raised blood-red letters below the Word. Characters. This time, Lyle was ready.
It’s Attic Greek, he realized. The characters stood out in the elegant script of the Septuagint, the language of Alexander the Great. The language that, at one time, had conquered the world, and had later been conquered in turn. A language of emperors, and of slaves. Lyle sucked on his bleeding finger as he hunched over the legal pad, copying out the unfamiliar letters:
ύπνος
It was a matter of a few moments to download a keyboard for ancient Greek characters on the desktop. A few more to pull up Google, find a translator widget, and hunt-and-peck his way to the answer. The cursor blinked beside the translation. The word beneath the Word, the Greek extraction written in blood, fat and placid and banal:
sleep
Lyle felt a flush of disappointment. He had expected something, he realized. Some kernel of an answer. The name of a daemon, or of a god. A celestial body, perhaps. And why Greek? If it was printed in the nineteenth century, printed in English in the nineteenth century? Lyle turned back to the fascicle but the blood was gone. He brushed a cautious knuckle across the white gap and found it dry.
Thirsty, he thought. You feel thirsty.
The language of Alexander, and of Oedipus Rex, and of Aristotle. He considered the Word. Sleep. A definition? Was the book itself carrying some kind of, what, repository, fragments of a lost language, preserved by some oblique arcana? The work of a secret society, or a cult? Some Rosicrucian gimmickry? He looked down at the white space, the secret-keeping space, awakened by blood. Considered, again, the crooked syllables, the LM, the double-X, the Y’s and double-U’s.
Sleep.
Sleep was a word with a certain beauty. Especially for the chronic insomniac. A beauty and a kind of longing. Sleep. The LM, the double-X, the Y’s and the double-U’s. Strange, riotous Word.
“Sleep is a beautiful word.” Lyly was unaware that he had spoken aloud. The LM, the double-X, in the middle, the double-X. It occurred to him that this Word, too, was beautiful.
Beautiful and possessed of a kind of interior sense, Lyle realized. A kind of logic. When you think about it.
The double-X, a kind of sluggish, sloughing sound in the middle. A collapse, to link the long consonants, as if the effort of producing the Word were too much for one’s throat, all at once. The LM, the double-X, the double-U’s. Lyle opened his mouth, still unaware. The Word intensified, in his field of vision, came into a sharp focus. The rest of the page somehow fell around it. Lyle wondered if he was being hypnotized. There was no more color in the world, he knew how to say the Word, the Word was teaching him, patiently, to say it, he opened his mouth not knowing and he said the Word that meant Sleep and—
#
Lyle awoke on the floor of his office. He shook his head, once, experimentally. He winced—his left temple was sore; a bruise was coming on.
Did I fall? Black out? The fascicle was still on his side-desk. It was closed, now. His computer was dark and quiet, hibernating. All at once he remembered—oh, my God—it wasn’t a definition or a repository or a code—
“It’s a command,” he croaked, his voice husky in the stillness. Everything clicked, almost audibly, like tumblers turning in his head. It was a command, and that made the book something else, that made the book something very much else indeed, oh, oh God, that makes it something else.
What time is it? The sun hadn’t risen, the streetlights still slanted through his shitty, frail blinds. Traffic had picked up though, he could hear it outside, and he felt—incredible, I feel incredible—fine, other than the bump on his noggin and a few cricks in his shoulders, his neck, Lyle felt like a million bucks. He pawed at his phone. He carried it in his front-left pocket, and if he had fallen on it it might have—
The phone showed 9:44PM. He had slept, all right. He ran the math. He had been at his desk, it had been maybe five thirty…
It put me to sleep for sixteen hours? Lyle have never slept that long in his life, to the best of his knowledge. It was enough to make him want to weep. He’d been just an anxious little bedwetter when his long war against insomnia began, and the notion of simply saying a Word, a beautiful Word, and dropping off like a stone—
He crossed to his office door, turned the bolt. Opened it. A sticky-note was affixed to the outside:
Dr. L, wasn’t able to get ahold of you today, hope you feel better. Walked the class through Act III, reiterated their assignments re: Marlowe comparison & cut them loose, will check in tomorrow first thing.
It was James’s fluid cursive. Even his penmanship was pretty.
Lyle turned his attention back to the fascicle. He picked it up carefully, reverently. He felt a surge of glee, an unbridled joy at the power in his hands. When he closed his eyes he could still see the sleep-Word, the constellation of unwieldy letters stood out bright and vivid. His heart raced with the implications of his discovery—something else something else it’s something else—
The term Grimoire drifted hazily across his consciousness.
He rasped his thumb along the margins and felt immediately the bristle of the damaged page, somewhere in the center. He held the book upright and let it fall open, the single page left standing. He smoothed it carefully down. He looked upon the book.
The empty white stood out easily, in the center column, the exact mid-point. Above it was yet another Word, this one shorter, beginning with an A and three O’s, a sound meant to be moaned. Lyle rummaged for another push-pin in his desk. He pricked his ring-finger, this time—spread the love, I might be doing this a lot—and smeared a sizzling patina of blood onto the white paper. The red letters formed on the page, he couldn’t wait for them, he was greedy for them—
That isn’t Greek, Lyle realized. The new Word was explicated in a much more familiar—and, curiously, more recent—tongue. The new Word was translated in Latin.
libido
Was the first Word I saw translated into Greek? he wondered. When I ran from the library, from the blood, the first time, were those Greek letters? He couldn’t be sure, it had happened so quickly, and hysteria warped the memory.
He couldn’t be sure, no. But he didn’t think so.
“Libido,” he pronounced into the quiet of the office. “Lust. Desire.” He stood there a long moment, lost in thought. Finally he reached beneath his desk and pulled out a slender leather briefcase. He wouldn’t leave it at the office again, not—
Not knowing what it can do.
He placed the fascicle inside, locked the briefcase, and killed the grating fluorescents overhead. As he left the office he crumpled James’s sticky note in his fist and let it fall.

2023.05.31 22:33 Omnissiah_Gauntlet Tips on picking up 10th Edition Leviathan (Start calling your LHS/LGS)
I heard today through the whispers of the warp (Valrak's youtube channel - Link Below) that Leviathan Box will BE A LIMITED RUN! This means that when they run out, they run out. The video also discusses the potential steps GW is taking to limit scalping. I've been making some phone calls to my LGS/LHS over the past week because I want to avoid missing out and make sure I get my hands on this box. I don't want to deal with the website. This video prompted me to share this info below.
I live in a fairly populated area in the US, I have a few hobby stores nearby. I called all the ones that carry 40k products within an hours drive (I've scouted them all out over the past three months as I entered the hobby). I'm not going to give out any specific info because I don't want to get anyone in trouble or cause any issues with my humble local hobby shop owners. Here is the recap of my conversations:
- Most of them are very mum. They themselves aren't getting a lot of information and have no idea how many boxes they are getting. Everybody told me to call back soon REAL SOON (see more on that below). If you haven't started reaching out to your local stores, START TODAY! It might already be too late in some cases.
- Very few stores are taking lists or reservations, and the ones that do already have a few dozen names on it.
- One store owner was willing speculate based on his experiences with 9th/Indomitus. He was taking a list (no pre-orders/deposits). He covered his list last time. If his orders remain consistent, he expects to cover his current list and probably has a few slots/leftovers still. However, who knows. He is confident based on prior experience, plus rumors this is the largest production run ever, that he should cover it.
*MY PURE SPECULATION/ADVICE*
-The article below on Spkeybits indicates that GW was closed today, likely for training related to the new launch set. This is when people will know their allocations etc. The article also indicates salespeople from GW will start reaching out to hobby/gaming stores from Thursday to Tuesday. Every conversation I had with a store over the phone either explicitly or tacitly confirmed the Thursday to Tuesday timeline. Your local hobby stores will probably have more information real soon. This lines up with other dates. If you're taking pre-orders on the 10th, it makes sense to start lining with your retailers a week before you start selling your own stuff.
-If you want to get this box set and not deal with online pre-orders, start talking to your local hobby stores now. Give them a call and see what you can get. Also, it might help to go in person, in my experience some store owners have been more forthcoming when you are talking to them in the store vs over the phone. Go into the store, maybe purchase something like some paint, and start chatting up the owner. They might be more forthcoming if they realize you are a hobbyist/customer and not some scalper trying to steal their retail margins.
-One owner once hinted that any new box sex inventory he gets his hands on that isn't pre-ordered by his customers in store/on his website will get put on E-Bay. This means potentially some of your local hobby and gaming stores are also scalping. He was mum on the phone when I called him last week, but was pretty open when I was in his store and bought something (See prior paragraph). So, this means if you want it, talk to your store owner now. Some store owners may make a business decision, and that means their wholesale order never hits the shelf.
-It seems store owners will likely know very soon how much inventory they can order. I would expect them to know more after this weekend. Stores will probably be announcing their pre-sales soon. You should start calling today, which may already be too late. Maybe consider heading over to your local gaming store over the next few days and start asking questions?
-Start developing your strategy. Figure out which stores have websites and which ones don't. If a store has a website that sells items, go into the store and talk to the owner. He will tell you how his pre-sales work. Then you can try going onto their website which will probably have less traffic then the GW launch. The ones that don't have a website are more old school are probably more likely to have a list (like I imagine one dude is literally just writing names and phone numbers into a notebook.).
- If you have an actual GW store nearby, go in and talk to the manager. GW Stores aren't the best places for picking up the latest box set. They focus on having a lot of faction diversity and as much of everything they can have. So they don't ever get a lot of Inventory of one product. However, hobby and gaming stores can focus on holding more inventory on items that are best sellers. One time I went to a GW store and asked the guy "why doesn't the GW website or GW store have any knight armigers" and he explained everything above. He also asked me where I lived and told me which Hobby Stores near me carried 40K stuff. He also told me which stores GW tended to sell the most stuff to and had the best relationships with. Sure enough these are all the older stores that have been around for a while (and also some distance from the GW store). These are the stores that are probably getting allocated more inventory. These are the stores GW can trust.
- The perfect kind of store to get your 10th edition box set seems to be the following. It has been around a long time and has a long relationship with GW. Basically the store that has been selling GW products since before the internet was a thing. They seem to have great relationships with GW salesmen. They are the stores mentioned by the GW store manager. If the manager has grey hair and can tell you stories about 1st edition they seem to get the most allocations on the big stuff. They are both large and small. It has nothing to do with shelf space or square footage in their store, but they their store like the internet doesn't exist. The guys have been around forever and many of them are still writing things down in notebooks and using calculators to add up your total at checkout. They might not have a website and their web presence is a social media page that barely gets updated. These guys should not survive the modern retail game yet they persist, probably because they've developed great relationships with both GW and the hobby community. They won't be scalping their unsold inventory on e-bay, they just leave it on the shelf. It will move off the shelf too, even if they are very small and don't even have the shelf space to move it. GW knows they are reliable and won't try to scalp them, and they have such an established relationship with the hobby community that people flock to them despite the out of date online marketing strategy.
A lot of you may already know this. If this sounds like dumb information it is probably because I am a n00b. I am very new to the painting side of this hobby and really want this box set. I freaked when I heard limited run, and based on the rumors did some research. I want this info out here because I want people in the hobby to be able to beat the scalpers and get the box!

2023.05.31 22:31 revlid "Allied" Detachments in 10e
We know from the faction focus for Imperial Agents that they won't be getting Detachment rules in the Index. That makes sense! You only get to pick one Detachment, which determines the special abilities, Stratagems, and Enhancments available to your entire army. Very few people will ever have an army entirely made out of Imperial Agents, and no-one's going to blow their entire Detachment on benefits for a lone Inquisitor and his bodyguard of mooks, or a single Assassin in their entire Astra Militarum army.
Here's a thought, though - what if there was a Codex: Imperial Agents loaded with Detachments... for other factions?
Think about it. Instead of an "Inquisition" Detachment themed around the Ordo Malleus, you pick up a Grey Knights Detachment for your Grey Knights army... which offers benefits, Enhancements, and Stratagems that specifically aim for synergy between Inquisitors, their Acolytes, whatever Assassins they may have brought along, and the entire rest of the Grey Knights roster. Something as simple as buffs that get stronger if an Inquisitor is nearby, or Stratagems that let you also target the Inquisitor for free. Picking an "Ordo Xenos" Inquisitor just means playing a Deathwatch army, with a specific Detachment that benefits from having an Inquisitor floating around.
- Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Division Detachment - Militarum Tempestus + Inquisitor (and Retinue, Assassins)
- Ordo Xenos Escort Detachment - Deathwatch + Inquisitor (and Acolytes, Assassins)
- Hammersworn Exorcists Detachment - Grey Knights + Inquisitor (and Acolytes, Assassins)
- Witch Hunter Militant Detachment - Adepta Sororitas + Inquisitor (and Acolytes, Arbites, Assassins)
- Explorator Fleet Detachment - Adeptus Mechanicus + Rogue Trader (and Voidsmen, Imperial Navy)
- Talons of the Throne Detachment - Adeptus Custodes + Assassins
This is probably unlikely, given the current soup-unfriendly direction of the game, but something similar will need to happen just for Ynnari (and probably Be'lakor) to function, so... who knows? You could also apply this template to other units/factions with "allied" rules. Examples...
- Knights of the Cog Detachment - Adeptus Mechanicus + Imperial Knight Freeblade(s)
- Iconoclastic Knight-Levy Detachment - Chaos Space Marines (Cultists only) + Chaos Knight Dreadblade(s)
- Warpsworn Invocators Detachment - Chaos Space Marines + Chaos Daemons
- Cult of Conjurers Detachment - Thousand Sons + Tzeentch Daemons
- Knights of Shadow Detachment - Chaos Knights + Be'lakor (and Chaos Daemons)
- Infested Defence Force Detachment - Genestealer Cults + Astra Militarum
- Ynnari Reborn Detachment - Aeldari + Drukhari/Harlequins/Corsairs
- Sky Serpents Detachment - Drukhari + Corsairs

2023.05.31 22:09 Proud-Specialist-640 The First Chapter of My Warhammer40k Book!
[F] Jocoby Malor
994 .M41 - Torian sector; Plotesian Sub
The Bane of Foes, a colossal strike cruiser, sailed through the warp like a leviathan of the sea. The ship, as vast as a celestial metropolis, sailed through the clawing, shrieking madness of tortured non-reality. Its gellar field, a supernatural armor, protected the vessel from the grips of phantasmal beasts and unborn nightmare horrors.
Studded along this behemoth's titanic form were macrocannons. Double-edged like a sword, they flanked the ship, five to each side. This bulky planet destroyer, a testament to the gothic fury of the Imperium, held the capacity to tear asunder ships twice its size - a feat it had enacted on numerous war fronts within the depths of the Torian sector. Nestled beneath it lay orbital gun platforms, divine instruments of judgment designed to reduce cities to cinders. Fusion beamers, lascannons, railguns - all primed, all thirsty for the blood of the God Emperor's foes. The Bane was poised and ready for battle as it sailed towards the planet of Nialos Prime. It stood ready to enact divine retribution of the throne.
Within this monolithic beast, servitors labored in the hull, walked the gantries, and codified the data. These grotesque hybrids of flesh and machine labored without end, tireless drones who analyzed vast reams of data and shifted munitions, several tons in weight, to the ship's weapon batteries. Serfs, the fallen aspirants of the Trioris Valorum, navigated this frenetic chaos with a practiced ease, born of long servitude. Cloaked in cream-colored robes, they were entrusted with the sacred rites within the strike cruiser - from honing enormous swords twice their size in weight and height, to inscribing bolt shells with holy prayers of deference and hate to the God Emperor.
In the landing bay stood the Astartes, Space Marines! Humanity's stalwart guardians and the lantern bearers in this age of cosmic darkness. Each one was a walking testament to war. Humans reborn by gene science and baptized in the furious flames of battle, were holding at bay the monstrous terrors of the galaxy.
Five full squads were formed in disciplined rows, their poise echoing the martial precision of an army of angels. Jacoby Malor and his squad brothers of the Knights Of Valor Chapter stood ready for their debriefing and prayer ritual - an old and venerated fraternity, These Knights were tempered in the hearth of ceaseless battle and honed into a killing edge.
The bay itself was also a hallowed sanctum for those embarking into the jaws of death. Flickering candles and braziers filled with potent incense transformed it into a cathedral of imminent battle. Serfs chanted in High Gothic, their voices rising in a litany of war and honor. In a panoply of lightning yellow and stormcloud gray, the serfs attended to each warrior's power armor with devotion. Deftly anointing the Aquilas on their breastplates with twice blessed oil, stamping purity seals and the oaths of moment to shoulder guards, and securing the tools of wrath to their waists.
Jacoby was attached to Tactical Squad Numion, designation: Bladed Light. The fourth squad within the Third Battle Company. Led by Brother Sergeant Simon Traegle, his brothers in arms, a ten-man squad, carried their own legacy of battle within the contingent.
There in front, stood Lance Fultar. He had been with the squad since before the Sergeant was honored with his current role. He was the Sergeant’s second and the banner bearer for the squad. Aloft on his power pack was the banner itself, obsidian like the void. In the middle of the ancient, heavy fabric was a sword pointing to the heavens. Achievements were written in exquisite scrawl design on the blade's length, depicting the deeds the squad took part in throughout its centuries of service. Angels in gray robes were on either side of the tapestry. One hand raised to blare a horn while the other gripped a shining sword the color of citrine hilt down. A laurel wreath with a gold ribbon above it surrounded the sword's tip. The ribbon had the words “Duty Unto Death” stenciled in bold High Gothic. There, to his front right was Travis Hoatepion, heavy weapons and explosives expert, his Heavy Bolter held in both gauntlets. He led two other heavy weapon specialists within the formation. Saulinious Fugïr and Paul Rottly, who held Plasma Cannon and Multi Melta, respectively. To either side of Jacoby were Johan Holt and Caspian Hellteris, his Faetutiuos Coditum, his Fate's Companions. They began together as aspirants. They trained together as neophytes. Now, they fight together as full-blooded Astartes. For, in the fifty-six years of warring together, this would be their first time serving in an actual Blade squadron. No more sensoria scenarios. No more live-fire exercises. The yoke was off, and he was glad to have his Fated by his side in this action.
Serfs crescendoed in their dirge as three more giants walked into the bay from a side hatch. Their steps were heavy enough to shake the braziers and flicker the candles in their stands. With a final note of solemnity, the serfs stepped back behind the formation and filed out as the trio continued forward.
To the right of the trio was Steward Romero. One of five war priests who held the chronicles and deeds of the chapter. Skull helmet on and in all black, save for his left pauldron which held the chapter symbol, he came like a death that was promised - a living legend and spiritual guide, he would stoke the flames of hate when the time for battle commenced.
To the left was Blade Saint Chrolorian Rex. Company champion and hero, even to the Astartes assembled, was regal in his manner. Smooth, flowing, every swaggering step speaking to his skill as a bladesman. His power armor was richly adorned and ornate with battle honors, his very being seemed to glow with a radiant gleam. His broadsword, Indominus Valorus, hung behind his back just as he hung behind his Fated.
That fated brother was Captain Kylen Rostone, centermost in the trio. Liege lord and commander of the company. His half cloak was draped over his right side. The powered longsword, Wrath, was scabbarded and hung on the same side. His left arm, as if dipped in its substance, gleamed silver displaying the Deathwatch iconography in bold italics on the same shoulder guard. Command radiated off of him as he continued forward.
All three came to a halt in front of the formations of battle-hardened killers. The Captain, with his helmet under one arm, took his time scrutinizing his warriors. His face was relaxed, yet firm. Like old leather, it was creased and pitted with age. A scar ran diagonally from his forehead to jaw line. All those details were rendered moot compared to his eyes. Emerald bright, his rich green gaze landed on each of his warriors' helm-lens, searching for doubt or a lack of resolve, and they stared back in turn. Fervor evident in the way they tightened their fingers around their weapons and the slight puffing out of chests. Seeing this he gave a small nod and began to speak.
"My Brothers, one knee!” Captain Kylen's voice boomed. His rich baritone reverberated like the tolling of a cathedral bell. As one, his battle brothers knelt before their lord, servo joints grinding with the simple motion. The Captain blinked and data was revealed as he spoke. “A Terran month ago, our chapter received a distress call requesting immediate deliverance from a cult of Tyranid breed xenos erupting within the Fortress world of Nialos prime and are, at this very moment, harrying loyal sons and daughters of our blessed Imperium.” Inside Jacoby’s helmet, a world started to revolve in his eyes, data spooling to the side of the turning sphere.
The Captain continued; “They have been fighting this protracted and planet-wide war that grows increasingly bitter as time presses on. To us, it has been three months of travel in the black sea. To them, five years of fighting without cease or respite.”
The Captain blinked and the data changed within all their helms. What was a world spinning with color, now soured to just a malignant purple. To Jacoby, it was like seeing a fruit putrefy in real time. Mortis runes appeared over the majority of the world's surface, denoting enemy-held territory while Aquila runes stamped themselves on the map in their visor displays. Five loyalist-held bastions formed a horseshoe along the east coast of the continent Granddita. Gold against the purple. ‘Light against the dark’ Jacoby thought.
“This is our last update, with 80% of the world firmly in the hands of these apostates.” The Captain continued, his voice swelling with tightly controlled intensity. “These five bastions are what's left of the defiance against the unclean. They would kill this world and offer it up to their false alien god! We will deny them! Deny them of their pagan rituals! Deny them their conquest! Deny them their lives! You! My brothers will add your support to this undertaking. We expect heavy resistance upon translation. Your duty will be to take out the anti aerial batteries on these coordinates.” The Captain blinked and data spooled. “Purge the taint where you find it, clear the areas, and let us bring righteous wrath and fury to these scum!”
“To your valor, my kin! We translate within the hour.” With his speech concluded and orders deliberated, the Captain stepped back as death stepped forward. Steward Romero raised his hands to chest height, Imperial Rosary in one gauntlet, and his Crozius Arcanum in the other. “Let us pray.” He intoned.

2023.05.31 21:43 GrungustheChungus Could the Tau theoretically *make* psykers or blanks?
Seeing as the Tau have enough knowledge of genetics to make bargain-bin space marines, and the Farsight Enclaves use gene editing to extend their lifespans, is it theoretically possible for the Tau to deliberately create stable, powerful Tau psykers or blanks?
The Tau have access to human psykers and possibly even blanks, from defected human populations, so would it be possible that they find and isolate the genes needed to produce these beings, and splice them into Tau genomes? This might even create Tau Navigators or Astropaths, reliably and possibly with less risk of chaos mutations.
I can't see the Ethereals allowing any of the castes to have psychic abilities, but it's possible that the Farsight Enclaves would try and utilise psykers or blanks for military or warp-travel purposes.

2023.05.31 21:40 CalypsoCrow Chaos or Eldar?
My friends and I just got into the game. I’ve tried Space Marines and Astra Militarum. I kind of like Space Marines so far but I find them a little boring.
Chaos and Craftworld Eldar are my two favorite factions in 40K, Chaos a little more though. Both seem to be rated as medium difficulty. I want something fun but not super complicated for now.

2023.05.31 19:45 awmdlad Road to the Third Orion War
TERRAN AID SHIPS DESTROYED After much speculation, Terran officials have announced that the lost shipping vessels, the Magnolia, Marigold, and Mallow belonging to Kernon Shipping, were destroyed while in transit. The large cargo vessels were lost with all hands, their large cargo of foodstuffs along with it.
This comes as a heavy blow to the Trenixous province of the former Jaaktarian Empire, as the ongoing famine is expected to worsen. Several riots broke out on Terran-occupied worlds upon hearing the news, with many accusing Terran Executive Command of attempting to reduce the Tersean population to “acceptable levels” for future colonization.
EXECOM has repeatedly denied these allegations, stating that the loss of these vessels constitute an act of terrorism. The routes of the convoy and their cargo was announced well beforehand, they say, as an act of goodwill and to discourage any pirates or Jaaktarian Navy remnants from attacking them.
Although the Galactic Conglomerate officially condemns their destruction, many of its member species continue to oppose the Terran occupation of the neighboring Trenixous, Grentali, and Hrengull provinces, refusing to remove the numerous economic sanctions placed upon the growing species.
Analysts say that by occupying these regions the Terrans are overextending their reach and are placing undue strain upon their economy. Despite the Terran claims that such occupations are merely a peacekeeping and sapient rights intervention, there are many who believe that the Terrans are attempting to exploit the ongoing Jaaktarian civil war, a conflict that is expected to worsen as peace talks continue to fall through.
However, there are many who believe that the attacks on the three ships was secretly orchestrated by the Kersean Empire. Relations between the Terrans and the Kerseans have been at an all time low following the incident at Tasagrate-IV, with increasingly aggressive rhetoric being stated by both sides. The recently announced Kersean annexation of the Tretorian, Erenthinji, Grinhalli, and Veruntaner former Jaaktarian provinces have only worsened this. Many have pointed out the hypocrisy of the Kersean position, decrying the Terran intervention while they themselves are directly claiming territory.
Furthermore, the Terran military has…
Excerpt from a news article published in the Sylintian Press, author unknown.
One of the more famous skirmishes leading up to the start of the Third Orion War was the Terran defense of Tasagrate-IV. The system was largely uninhabited and lay in relatively uncharted space overlapped by Terran and Kersean claims. Tasagrate-IV had been settled by the Terrans five standard cycles prior to the conflict, and a small but robust export-based economy had developed utilizing the planet’s abundance of natural resources.
It is unknown what made the Kersean Empire decide to attack the small colony. Kersean-aligned speakers may claim that they were simply defending rightfully claimed territory from an encroaching aggressor. Pro-Terra sources would likewise claim that Kersea chose to seize the colony and its resources by force in a bid to curb Terra’s growing power. The official position by the Terran government was that it was a probing attack, meant to test Terran defenses and response as a precursor to a much larger invasion.
What can be certain is that the truth will likely never be known. The opening phase of the Third Orion War left the vast majority of the Kersean Empire’s critical infrastructure in ruin. Centers of Command and Communication were among the highest priority of targets during Operation Apocalypto, second only to Kersea’s Relativistic Weapons. Any information held by the personnel and ships that participated in the invasion would have likewise been lost when the second wave of Terran RKV’s, aimed at conventional military targets, obliterated the Kersean fleets. The ensuing chaos and breakdown of civil function means that learning more would be prohibitively difficult. As such, Terran sources and hearsay are all that can be used to document the battle.
Hrjin Argoni’s popular memoirs do shed light on the matter, however his position as a diplomatic envoy by nature means that he was not privy to such military matters. Many have construed Argoni’s orders to “gain the most advantageous settlement” in the territorial negotiations as evidence that the Kersean Empire was always planning on seizing the systems by force, however the Terran diplomats had the same instructions, essentially to the letter.
At the time of the conflict, the Terran population only numbered at about one hundred thousand, the overwhelming majority of which were clustered around the planet’s Capitol or the many mines that dotted the surface. The Terran military contingent was likewise small, consisting of a single Army division and one Wing of MSM-115C Surface-to-Orbit anti-ship missiles, better known as the Paladin.
The Army division was thinly spread across the planet, primarily equipped for anti-piracy, anti-smuggling, and peacekeeping operations. The Paladin Wing meanwhile consisted of four relatively independent Paladin Squadrons, with two located on each hemisphere. That way, the entirety of the planet’s orbital space could be covered and defended, allowing for two squadrons to be on deployment while the other two underwent maintenance or training.
At the Squadron level, the Paladins were commanded by one Mobile Operations Center (MOC), a large tracked vehicle converted from transportation use and equipped with numerous powerful orbital sensors and communication arrays. The MOC would be tasked with coordinating the movement and dispersal of the squadron’s various batteries while also monitoring the orbital space they were assigned to defend. Each squadron held four batteries of three Transport-Erector-Launchers (TELs) that carried and fired the Paladin missiles. The TELs themselves were even larger than the MOC, using Anti-gravity technology to transport the massive Paladin missile horizontally on their backs over the planet’s rough terrain, then having to erect the missile into launch position before being fired. Because of the size of the Paladin’s warheads and the distance they needed to travel to reach their targets, the Paladin was considerably larger than the Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles of Terran antiquity.
When the order to launch is given, the MOC sends the command to one or more of the squadron’s elements. The element would then stop its movement and each TEL would lower themselves to the ground, at which point several hydraulic legs would extend to anchor the TEL to the ground in a level position. After that, the missile in its tube would be raised to the vertical position while a firing solution is reached.
The Paladin used a cold-launch system, meaning that the missile must first be ejected from the tube before the missile’s solid-fueled chemical booster would ignite. To do this, a generator used chemical reactions to create an immense amount of steam that would eject the missile above the TEL. Following ejection, the missile’s booster would ignite and the missile would begin its flight to the target. Throughout its flight, various stages are discarded and ignited to save weight and increase the missile’s velocity. Once the missile was out of the atmosphere, the missile’s nose cone would be jettisoned and the three warheads released.
Each Paladin Missile carried three W97 Enhanced Radiation Warheads, the most prolific variant of the famed Terran “Neutron Bomb.” Each warhead is equipped with a thruster pack to guide it to its target while evading enemy interceptors. Upon reaching the target, the warhead would detonate either upon impact or proximity, killing the biological crew of the enemy vessel with the immense burst of neutron radiation and damaging electronic systems.
This is what the Kersean Royal Navy faced when the invasion fleet descended upon Tasagrate-IV.
The Empire did not expect significant resistance, and as such sent a light invasion force of 300,000 Royal Marines on 50 transport ships escorted by a fleet led by one Heavy Cruiser, three Light Cruisers, five Destroyers, and eight Corvettes. Upon arrival. The fleet would disperse into three elements. The first would hang back and protect the transports, consisting of the Heavy Cruiser, one Light Cruiser, one Destroyer, and two Corvettes. This would serve as a reserve force should any ships be lost, and would command the overall operation. The two other elements would consist of one Light Cruiser, Two Destroyers, and Three Corvettes. These would comb the surface of the planet, one for each hemisphere, with the objective of seeking and destroying any target of opportunity.
When the invasion commenced, the Paladin had been untested in combat and was relatively unknown even within Terran space. Had the full capability of the system been known by the Kersean Empire, it is likely a much more sizable fleet would have been sent to Tasagrate-IV. The Paladin Wing on the planet only had two squadrons that were combat-capable. One was undergoing routine maintenance, and the other was conducting training missions with inert warheads. The latter would not have time to mount their live warheads before the battle would commence, and as such immediately chose to disperse rather than engaging the enemy.
Once the two Kersean Strike elements were in range of the Paladin batteries, each squadron fired a salvo of eight missiles. These were detected by the Kersean forces, however they were unable to intercept due to their distance from the planet. As such, the eight missiles were able to reach altitude and release their three warheads, totaling 24 warheads per element, four warheads per ship, and 48 warheads in total.
The Kersean point-defense systems experienced significant difficulty adapting to the highly-maneuverable warheads that swarmed their fleets. In total, 75% of the incoming warheads were intercepted. However, that still left six warheads inbound for each element. Both were ravaged by the attack. Between the two of them, only two corvettes survived undamaged, with one frigate surviving with heavy damage and a light cruiser rendered combat ineffective.
This came as a severe shock to the Kersean invasion commander, as the highly dispersed Paladin squadrons were not located by their long-range sensors. As such, she wisely decided to abort the invasion and retreated back into Kersean space. Had she chosen to press the attack, it is likely the invasion would have succeeded, despite significant losses. The two combat-capable Paladin squadrons were down to 1/3 of their firepower, while the other two could be hunted down and destroyed by the invading ground forces.
Upon seeing the success of the Paladin, Terran production and deployment of the system was significantly increased. Kersean intelligence services meanwhile, scrambled to figure out the new weapon.
This incident substantially increased tensions between the two powers, and is regarded as one of the main factors leading to the Third Orion War. Both powers used it for substantial propaganda value. On the Terran side, the technological prowess of the system and the imperialist aggression of the Kersean was strongly emphasized. The Kerseans meanwhile decried the settlement of the system as an invasion and encroachment by the Terrans onto their territory and a flagrant disregard for the legitimate claims, portraying the Terran defense as an unprovoked attack against an armed envoy that was intending to negotiate a settlement.
In either situation, the end result was an increase in military readiness and mobilization as the two powers geared themselves up for war…
Excerpt from “Third Orion War: Buildup and Causes” by Junkillian Khimonsa, Chief Historian, Livani University.
“Look, those damn Kerseans are up to no good, clear as day. Those xenos think they can strut around the Conglomerate and bully everyone into submission. ‘No More!’ I say.
“Just look at the bill they passed a week ago! Sanctions on damn near everything we make. They don’t like it that we can do things cheaper and better than them, and they hate us. They go around calling us little atom monkeys because their tech ain’t as good as ours. That’s the thing you see, humanity has always been special. The damn xenos ain’t never gonna get that.
“I had a brother on the Marigold when the Kerseans destroyed her. That food was going to do good in the galaxy, helping out the innocents in Jaaktaria. ‘Cept the problem is that doing so makes us Terrans look good and the Kerseans look bad. I’m telling you, those hinge-head bastards in the Diamond Palace are a bunch of Tyrants.
“And then they go around preaching about ‘stability’ and ‘order’ and ‘uplifting’. All they do is go around like loan sharks trapping helpless little aliens in their schemes. And when someone doesn’t want to bow down they break them.
“I’ve said this before and I’ll say this again, War is coming. It’s time someone put them in their place. They think they have the numbers and the precious little ‘RKV’s’. No, like they think us losing a few dozen planets will stop us with the hundreds we have. We will burn their mongrel hides even if we have to choke on our own blood to do so.
“If they think we don’t have the nukes to burn them off of every floating rock they own, I
know we’ll have the chemicals and bioweapons to bring them a beatdown of biblical proportions. They’ll be a textbook footnote before they even know what hit them.“
Excerpt from Political Commentator Joe Alexander’s podcast “Humanity First.” The podcast is highly controversial and is known for containing biased or incorrect data. It is currently banned by 78% of Galactic Conglomerate member species.
BEYOND TOP SECRET OSIRIS has observed extremely abnormal Kersean activity that warrants immediate EXECOM attention.
SIGINT has detected a 450% increase in encrypted FTL communications between the Kersean Grand Council and all Kersean military forces. HUMINT and DARKSTAR missions observe that 85% of the Kersean Navy is out of port, with significant fleet gatherings at points ASTRA, BAKER, GEODE, and ZENITH. Significant Kersean ground forces are being mobilized for planetary assault. Ministry of the Voice propaganda has seen a 165% trend increase towards belligerent messaging. 78% of Kersean reserves are being mobilized. Significant activity around Kersean Relativistic Weaponry.
CARDINAL assets in Galactic Conglomerate report numerous conferences between Kersean and Kersean-aligned delegates. 61% of BENEDICT assets are unresponsive. All BENEDICT assets are presumed compromised. Primary, secondary, and underground channels are experiencing severe difficulty negotiating with Kersean contacts.
OSIRIS believes this to be a prelude to a full-scale invasion of Terran space. Kersean activity is consistent with that before the Kersean invasion of former Jaaktarian space. SAMSON sites have been notified of ongoing developments and have increased readiness, however cannot be activated without EXECOM authority.
OSIRIS strongly recommends EXECOM declare STRATCON BLACK and activate CONPLAN 88 in accordance with the Lemay Protocol. Casualty estimates are significant but acceptable. OSIRIS confirms this with the highest degree of confidence. War is unavoidable.
Highly encrypted FTL communique from the Terran Office of Strategic Intelligence, Reconnaissance, Information, and Surveillance (OSIRIS) to Terran Executive Command, released one decacycle after the end of the Third Orion War. Less than one Terran hour after this message was received, the first Terran RKV’s would be fired as a part of Operation Apocalypto, marking the beginning of the Third Orion War.
He passed me a small sphere in his hand. It was an incredibly tiny object, small enough I had to make sure it didn’t slip between my appendages. I look back up and see him rolling perhaps a dozen of them in the palm of his hand.
“This is it? It must weigh only a gram!”
I tried not to grimace as he smiled.
“It does, but kinetic energy increases
exponentially with velocity. At the speed of light, that little thing hits with over 10 kilotons of force.”
I blanched as the sphere suddenly felt far, far heavier in my grasp. 10 kilotons was by no means small, but compared to nuclear and antimatter weaponry, it was a drop in the bucket. I turned back to the weapon’s diagram and eyed the warhead section.
“How many did you say it could carry?”
He paused for a moment. Worry briefly flashed across my mind as I feared I had asked an unacceptable question. But my anxieties were placated somewhat as he responded.
“Several thousand, depending on size and method of dispersal. This one is just the anti-ship version.”
Images of the Emperor’s Fleet being torn apart in an instant flashed before my eyes. Garden worlds being left smoldering wastelands while small moons were simply
broken.
The man took the sphere from me and placed them down on the table. Collecting them one by one into a small bag, he reminded me of a predator picking through the carcass of its prey.
“You know…” he began. “We already have plenty of them in service.”
I could have sworn my hearts stopped beating at that instant.
“I can’t tell you how many we have or how fast we make them, but do know we have enough.”
This was bad. The Intelligence Service told me that the Terrans were only in the prototype stage. I scanned his features for signs of a bluff, a slight tick here or a bead of sweat there, but couldn’t find any.
But then I realized,
The Terrans weren’t beholden to the arms treaties. They were an upstart race who entered the galactic scene well after the Great Hydrogen Wars, well after hundreds of relativistic weapons had been used in the most horrific manner. Left unchecked, Terra’s resource-rich systems and industrious people meant that the race had the potential to rival and possibly surpass Kersea.
This changed everything. Now it was clear that Terra wasn’t a future threat, but a present one.
If the Terrans were developing RKVs built specifically for anti-ship purposes, then they must already have significant amounts of them. The other races of the galaxy reserved their few RKVs as planet-busting weapons of last resort. There was no need to differentiate them as being anti-ship, because there was only one use for them.
I flashed through my briefings of the Terran military. Budget black holes woven between endless bureaucracy, ship classes designated far different than why their tonnage suggested, uninhabited worlds or systems blocked off, significant agricultural reserves, mobile command posts. The Terrans weren’t just preparing to fight a relativistic war, they were preparing to
win one.
He continued.
“Despite what you and your government may think, us Terrans aren’t new to this game. We’ve been playing against ourselves for centuries.”
“Is that so?”
“Indeed.” He turned around and emptied the bag back into his right hand. “We know the rules.”
Rolling one into place between his thumb and index finger, he tossed it at a nearby model of a terrestrial planet. The plastic model tipped over and clattered onto the table.
“We do have one question though,” Another toss and another model planet knocked over.
“What kind of player do you want to be?”\ Excerpt from “My Greatest Failure.” By Hrjin Argoni, Former Kersean Imperial Ambassador to Terra

Edit: these stats are for Combat Patrol, because GW wants to gut the rules in the name of simplicity while also inflating different sets of rules for some reason.
Available for all of us to see, the Tyranids vs Space Marine Combat Patrols give us a few interesting bits of information.
Ryan's have 3 Wounds at T5, so they are a little tougher than ga(u)nts. They come stock with Fights First and their talons have 6 attacks, -1 AP, 1 Dam.
Psychophage has 10 Wounds, T12, and a 2+ save. It seems to have an inherent 5+ Feel No Pain. It also has a Feeding Frenzy special rule- if it targets a unit below Starting Strength, it gets +1 to hit, and if the unit is below half of its Starting Strength, it gets +1 to wound. Speaking of it's Betentacled Maw has Anti-Psyker 4+, Devestating Wounds, D6+1 Attacks, hitting on 3+, S6, -1AP, and 2Dam. It also has a ranged weapon- the Psychoclastic Torrent (Ignores Cover, Torrent) with 12" range, D6 shots, S6, -1AP, and 1Dam. It also explodes and CAN damage friendly nearby units.
The Winged Tyranid Prime has 6 Wounds, though I did not catch it's Toughness. It's talons have 6 attacks hitting on 2+, S6, -1AP, and 2Dam (or better, as 3 attacks killed 3 Space Marine Intercessors). It was upgraded with a Psychostatic Veil, granting it Lone Operative, a 4++ invuln, and -1 to hit from melee attacks.
A few Tyranid Stratagems were used, but it looks like they may be exclusive to the Vargheist detachment. We've seen the Teeming Broods to revive 2d6 Ga(u)nts, but there is also a 1CP -1 to hit reaction.
Spoiler for who won, but
Tyranids controlled the board (which was very easy to do, since the Space Marines only had 4 units) and eeked by on Victory Points, even though they died in droves without killing too terribly much. submitted by
