2023.06.01 01:29 JohannGoethe Moral EAN etymology

Moral EAN etymology
M = 𓌳
The root letter of the word moral is letter M, which is based on the sickle: 𓌳, 13th letter, value: 40, the tool used to cut successfully grown crops 🌱, which translates as “food” and “clothing“ for society.
On this basis, the Egyptians produced a yearly-changing set of 42 laws, called “negative confessions”, that regulated society towards this end of growing successful crops, intermixed with regulating other social taboos, e.g. lying, cheating, stealing, etc.
Maat
Maat, in the Egyptian scheme, was the goddess of universal moral order:
Various depictions of Maat, the Egyptian moral order goddess. The bottom left image: 𓁦 𓏥 𓏏, might be a glpyh forerunner for the Greek Moirai (μοιρα) [221], or three fate sisters.
Glyphs or glyph groups defining this goddess include:
  • Maat = 𓆄, meaning: “truth feather” 🪶.
  • Maat = 𓁦, meaning: “morality goddess”
  • Maat = 𓐙𓌳𓏏𓂣, meaning: Maat plinth, sickle (𓌳) [letter: M], bread (𓏏) [sound: ”t”], and arm (𓂣)
  • Maat = 𓐙𓌳𓏏 𓂡, meaning: Maat plinth, sickle (𓌳) [letter: M], bread (𓏏) [sound: ”t”], and arm holding something (𓂡)
  • Maat = 𓁦 𓏥 𓏏, meaning: moral feather 🪶 goddess, times three (𓏥), and bread 🍞 (𓏏)?
The so-called Maat plinth, symbol: 𓐙, is defined by Gardiner as the Aa11 symbol, the specifics of which are as follows:
The Aa11 (𓐙) glyph definition according to Alan Gardiner, which define it as the phonetic symbol for “maa” or m3’ in guesstimated cartophonetic symbols.
In the Greek rescript, the 42 laws of Maat became Dike (Δικη) [42], the goddess of justice. Dike in the Roman rescript, became Justicia, which is where the modern word justice derives.
Alphanumerically, this 4th column of the periodic table, or 4-40-400 cipher, defined the Egyptian concept of moral, or letter M (𓌳), value: 40, choices “you”, or letter Y, value: 400, make. This is why Khufu pyramid, which is built at the tip of the delta (Δ) [4], or solar birthing location, is 440 cubits, or 40 + 400 units in base length.
Moirai (μοῖρα)
In Greek mythology, Moirai (μοιρα) [221], i.e. three sisters: Klotho (Κλωθώ), Lachesis (Λάχεσις), and Atropos (Ἄτροπος), were defined as the universal enforcers of fate, or a concept of a universal principle of natural order and balance.
This model is thought, e.g. here, to be the Greek rescript of the three daughters of Maat, or something to this affect?
Moros and Thanatos
In 2650A (-695), Hesiod, in his Theogony, introduced the gods Thanatos, aka “death”, and Moros (Μόρος), aka “doom”, which seem to prefigure the later coining of “moribus” by Cicero in On Fate (2000A/-45).
The Roman rescript of Moros is Fatum.
Mor
In Latin, the term “mor” translates as “death”. In Roman mythology, the god Mor and goddess Mors came to be associated with taking away dead bodies.
Mores
In Latin, the term “mores”, seems to have prefigured, by come centuries, the term “moribus” (Cicero, 2000A/-45), and eventually ”morals” in English.
Cicero
In 2000A (-45), Cicero, in his On Fate (De Fato) (§1), is oft-credited with coining the term “morals” via the Latin term moribus, based on the Greek term ethos (ηθος), defined by axiomata (αξιωματα), which are explained further, as concerns the future, by dynaton (δυνατων), i.e. divine powers or forces, or something to this effect:
Latin Google Yonge (102A/1853)
... quia pertinet ad mores, quod ἦθος [ethos] illi vocant, nos eam partem philosophiae de moribus appellare solemus, sed decet augentem linguam Latinam nominare moralem; ... because it pertains to morals, which they call ἦθος [ethos], we are wont to call that part of philosophy moral, but it is fitting to call the growing Latin language moral; That branch of philosophy which, because it relates to manners, the Greeks usually term ‘ethics’, from: ήθος [ethos], the Latins have hitherto called the philosophy of manners. But it may be well for one who designs to enrich the Latin language, to call it moral science.
explicandaque vis est ratioque enuntiationum, quae Graeci ἀξιώματα [axiomata] vocant; and to explain the force and reason of the utterances, which the Greeks call ἀξιώματα [axiomata]; And here we have to explain the nature and force of certain propositions which the Greeks term axioms (ἀξιώματα).
What power they have when they say something about the future, and about what may or may not be done, is an obscure question, which the philosophers call περὶ δύστῶν [perí dýstón], and the whole is λογική [logikí], which I call the reason of disputing. When these propositions relate to the future, and speak of possibilities and impossibilities, it is difficult to determine their precise force. Such propositions necessarily refer to the amount of possibility, and are only resolvable by logic, which I call the art of reasoning.
But what I have done in other books, which are about the nature of the gods, and also in those which I have published about divination, in order that a continuous speech may be explained on both sides, so that it may be more easily proved by both, which seemed to each the most probable, that in this discussion about the fate of chance some prevented me from doing so. But I cannot avail myself in this essay on Fate of the method I employed in that other style of mine in which I discussed the Nature of the Gods, or in the book which I published on the doctrine of divination: in which treatises the sentiments of each philosophic school are explained in a continuous discourse; in order that each reader might the more easily adopt that opinion which appeared to him the more probable.
Ethos (ήθος)
The following is the EAN of ethos (ήθος):
Greek English # Meaning
ή e 8 Ogdoad water source of all.
ήθ eth 17 Ennead, the supreme law defining god family, born out of Ogdoad.
ήθο etho 87 Former + 360º (omicron), meaning: governed all days of the year?
ήθος ethos 287
Axiomata (ἀξιώματα)
The following is the EAN of axiomata (αξιωματα), which Cicero says are at the basis of “ethos”, which thus defines his new Latin term “moralem”, i.e. “morals” in English:
Greek English # Meaning
a 1
ἀξ ax 61 Former + 𓊽 (djed letter), presumably related to axioms that defined the laws or stability of the universe? Equals: nai (ναι), meaning: “yes; truly”.
ἀξι axi 71
ἀξιώ axio 871
ἀξιώμ axiom 911
ἀξιώμα axioma 912
ἀξιώματ axiomat 1212
ἀξιώματα axiomata 1213
Dynaton (δυνατῶν)
The following is the EAN of dynaton (δυνατων), which Cicero says relates to the power or force of moralem (morals) related to the future:
Greek English # Meaning
δ d 4
δυ dy 404 Equals: endexios (ενδεξιος), meaning: “on the right hand; favorable”.
δυν dyn 454
δυνα dyna 455
δυνατ dynat 755
δυνατῶ dynato 825
δυνατῶν dynaton 875
In following quote, we see the dyna- suffix:
”In school, we learn about the dynameis (δυναμεις) 𓊹 of the stoicheia (στοιχεια) or letter-number elements.”
Dionysios of Halicarnssus (1985/-30), Demosthenes (52); cited by Barry Powell (A36/1999) in Homer and the Origin of the Greek Alphabet (pg. 22)
We also note that dynamis (δυναμις) [705], a variant spelling, was found here to be possibly a part of the root EAN of the word etymology.
Other
Charlton Lewis and Charles Short, in their Latin Dictionary (76A/1879), give the following:
mōrālis , e, adj. mores,
I. of or belonging to manners or morals, moral (a word formed by Cicero; cf. moratus): quia pertinet ad mores, quos ἤθη Graeci vocant, nos eam partem philosophiae de moribus appellare solemus. Sed decet augentem linguam Latinam nominare moralem, Cic. Fat. 1, 1; “imitated by Seneca and Quintil.: philosophiae tres partes esse dixerunt, moralem, naturalem, et rationalem,” Sen. Ep. 89, 9; Quint. 12, 2, 10: pars illa philosophiae ἠθική moralis est dicta, id. 6, 2, 8; cf. “also,” id. 12, 2, 19 and 20: “epistolae,” Gell. 12, 2, 3. —Hence, adv.: mōrālĭter , in a characteristic manner, characteristically, Don. ad Ter. Ad. 5, 8, 35; Ter. Phorm. 1, 1, 2.—Esp., morally, Ambros. Apol. David. 6.—Comp.: “moralius,” Ambros. in Psa. 118, Serm. 1, 5.
Wiktionary, of note, gives the following etymology of moral:
From Middle English moral, from Old French moral, from Latin mōrālis (“relating to manners or morals”), first used by Cicero, to translate Ancient Greek ἠθικός (ēthikós, “moral”), from mos (“manner, custom”).

2023.06.01 01:23 OtterInSeastorm Does anyone know any good yandere xreader book?

Hey guys, I’m looking for a hot yandere story with good characters and most probably tagged as mature (lmao), yeah yeah, I've read some were there was different types of yandere and not just the psycho/killer type, dont get me wrong I do love the classic yandere but I'm looking for new concepts.
Like, there was a book called the infection and there are 4 types of yandere in society obsessives, possessives, protectives and sadistics, it was about an infection that spread out through the society and infected almost everyone and because of that there's almost no rule against being a yandere and do bad stuff for the sake of love and y/N was one of those who were not infected...
It was amazing and I would like to know if u guys know any other stories with close concepts or just different ideas because I'm addicted It could be xOC too I'm not that picky =)

2023.06.01 01:17 Late-Ad8778 MOH wants to make cake and I dont want her to.. help!

I have a maid of honor (who is my best friend), who basically told me she is also my maid of honor. I didn't ask her to be, just for years she has assumed she will be along side my sister.
Keep in mind, I am non-confrontational and she was already going to be in my wedding party so if she wants the title, screw it I let her have it. Pick your battles.
This friend also has decided she is making my wedding cake, didn't ask, just assumed because she used to be a professional cake decorator. I said sure because I get a cheap cake and she's talked about doing it for forever so I thought it wouldn't be an issue.
Here's the problem. We are coming on 4 months out and she's been the most uninvolved person in my bridal party. Whenever me or someone else in my bridal party try to talk to her about anything wedding related she brushes it off. I don't expect anyone to jump over backwards in my wedding party but at least show some interest. I've tried to bring it up multiple times now how I'd like to discuss flavors, how it will look, etc and I've gotten nowhere.
It's to the point now where I'm just happy if she shows up. I still want her in my wedding party and don't care if she has a title, but I don't want her making my cake anymore because I don't want to rely on her when she's been so uninterested so far.
If I ask her if she is still planning on making my cake she will say yes, but she will most likely forget again. She always has personal issues coming up and I just don't trust that come my wedding day that I will have a cake and cupcakes to serve my guests.
I already got a quote for a cake from a bakery and want to book with them... but how do I tell her?
She's a very strong personality and I am very timid. She's going to make me feel silly for not trusting her to make the cake.
I don't like making people upset or hurting people's feelings. I also don't want to cause tension with our friendship by cutting her off of making decisions and choosing a bakery to make my cake instead.
What do I do?
TLDR: how do I tell my friend she isn't making my wedding cake anymore?

2023.06.01 01:06 FoRkKnIfEfAn69 The Mystery of Chris Hoeller

The Mystery of Chris Hoeller
Hello all, long post. TL;DR at the bottom.
The other day, I discovered Pavlove, a bonus track off of Folie a Deux. It's a very solid song, and I wanted to add it to my Spotify playlist, however it is not on Spotify. I decided to do some searching, and found that a person had my same question on this subreddit, and directed the questioner to Invisible by Chris Hoeller on iTunes. I searched for this same Invisible by Chris Hoeller on Spotify, but didn't come up with anything, so I tried googling the song title and singer and came up with a song by that title and an album by the same title by Chris Hoeller.
the album's page on Spotify, apparently only visible through Google
Now, these song titles sounded familiar to me. When I did some thinking I realized they were based on actual lyrics in Fall Out Boy songs. "Invisible" comes from the line in the chorus of "Pavlove" that goes "I'm the invisible man who can't stop staring at the mirror". "Invisible" also has the same runtime as Pavlove. This tracks with the other songs of the playlist - "Don't Pretend" (don't pretend you ever forgot about meeeeee) has the same track length as "'The Takeover, The Breaks Over'". "Work the Room" has the same runtime as "The (After) Life of the Party". "Hell or Glory" (hell or glory, I don't want anything in between) has the same runtime as "She's My Winona", etc. This was interesting to me - we all know (especially in those pre-hiatus albums) that FOB took care to make their song titles not include the lyrics of the song.
I also noticed something else on the album page: the album was "released" in 2011 - during the 2009-2013 hiatus. Was this a scrapped tracklist for a greatest hits album? Not likely, as their biggest hits don't seem to be included here. Was this supposed to be a "disc 2" of sorts on the existing greatest hits album? Maybe - but none of these answer the big question - who or what is Chris Hoeller?
A Google search of Chris Hoeller returns a twitter account that seems inactive as of 2015, as its holder appears to have passed away. However, scrolling through the accounts tweets, he's a very big fan of bands like Blink-182 and Modest Mouse, both alternative rock bands. He's also evidently a FOB fan:
lyrics from \"American Beauty/American Psycho\", \"Favorite Record\", \"Novocaine\", all off the album \"American Beauty/American Psycho\"
more lyrics from \"Novocaine\" and two posts about \"Fourth of July\", both songs off of \"American Beauty/American Psycho\"
Through his 3,501 tweets, these are the only ones related to Fall Out Boy - nothing about some album or being a singer-songwriter or promoting his Spotify page. However, I think this person had some sort of connection to "Invisible". Look at the album cover with a man's face on it:
album cover
Now look at a picture posted to Google Chris Hoeller's Facebook account:
Google Chris Hoeller's Facebook pic
These are 1000000% the same person - however, the Facebook picture was posted on Feb 11, 2015 - way after the 2011 release date of "Invisible". Even still, this facebook picture has been used on Chris Hoeller's Linkedin profile, making it even less likely that Google Chris Hoeller took the picture from this album and doctored it somewhat. This guy also has a Youtube and Pintrest account, all using a picture of someone who looks a lot like the dude on the "Invisible" album cover.
This seems to be where public information about Chris Hoeller runs out - the real Chris Hoeller passed in 2015, and his social accounts have gone dark since (family posted a goodbye note on Hoeller's twitter). I may end up messaging the Twitter account or Facebook, but probably not - it seems in poor taste to message a family who may still be hurting from the loss of a friend/spouse/dad about some album cover that he may or may not have anything to do with.

With all the personal avenues to Chris Hoeller exhausted, I decided to try and see if I could listen to "Invisible". Unfortunately (as you may have seen in the screenshot of the album page above), the album is greyed out on Spotify and unavailable to listen to. I then did a google search of the album and singer, and came across a link to Amazon Music Italia, where it seems that we can listen to the entire thing.
\"Invisible\" on Amazon Music Italia
However, there's one major problem - you need an Italian Amazon account to listen to Italian Amazon Music. To create an Italian Amazon account, you need an Italian phone number and an Italian address, two things that I (as an American) do not have. This is where I ask for your help, FOB community. If any of you have an Italian account on Amazon, please let me know/DM me or screen record this album. We could also try using a VPN to spoof an Italian connection and see if the album becomes available on Spotify then. As far as I know, the album isn't on any other platform, so this is all we've got. Thanks for reading!
TL;DR - weird album on Spotify with FOB lyrics as titles by a dude named Chris Hoeller, who seems to have passed in 2015. Album is only listenable on Spotify in certain regions or on Amazon Music Italia, would be cool if we got a person to screen record/rip the album.

2023.06.01 01:04 Dark-Oak93 Advice On Dealing With Super Religious Coworker In A Red State

I live and work in a red state. Let me tell you, it's about as wild as you can imagine.
The majority of folks drink, do drugs, and fuck like rabbits, but they're in church on Sunday or adamantly Christian and will absolutely verbally (and sometimes physically) throttle you if you're different in anyway (ie LGBTQ+, atheist or not Christian, from a different background, etc)
I spent a lot of time hiding and being quiet but something snapped in me in the last few years and I just can't do that anymore. I don't know if my age has made me cranky and bold or if I finally just broke down and let the lack of fucks I have fester unfettered by criticism.
I'm pagan. I'm pro LGBTQ+ and, not that I have to explain myself, I am because Christianity has not been kind to me or anyone, really, and I just don't give a shit if someone is different and believe they should be allowed to exist. It doesn't affect me. It doesn't do anything to impede my own existence. Seeing a gay couple or a trans person doesn't send me into an unnatural rage my flesh can't contain. It usually doesn't even register on my conscious radar.
At my place of work, we have a small team of mostly older women. I've had a few run ins with one already, we'll call her Sandra.
One day, Sandra brought up the evils of abortion. I stated that for me, and many like me, abortion would be the only way to save our lives, as we can't carry a pregnancy with the very real and present threat of death. It was a statement meant to offer a different view and to also get this conversation the fuck out of my cubicle. But of course, this was not the case. My coworker doubles down and tells me to put my faith in God who would heal me and help me make children...
So, fun fact about me, I lost the ability to poker face somewhere between working retail and getting on antidepressants.
I immediately cringed and it was only then that she backed off.
The next encounter was when Sandra and another coworker, Ashley, were making fun of trans people. I stated that I have a trans cousin because any normal, well adjusted human being would immediately nic that convo in the bud. Nope. Immediately, I'm bombarded with questions and confrontation.
Now, I don't shy from these things. If you can voice your violence and ignorance, I can pop you in the mouth with reason. Upon learning that other cultures had names for trans and gay people long before colonization, like some Native American cultures, Sandra made a stereotypical "Indian dance" and said quote "what did they call them? Ooga booga?!"
If looks could kill, y'all... That entire building would have been a crater long forgotten by enlightened civilization. I was not amused.
Sandra closed by stalking towards me stating that her God "was not involved in such confusion".
Most recently, I was talking to another coworker who seems to have self awareness and a soul. She mentioned that her husband was pagan and I stated that I was, as well. Simply a statement. No different than my coworkers talking about their church events and saying they'll pray for whatever.
Holy shit, something broke lose in Sandra and she went on the offensive.
Now, I am no stranger to being witnessed to. Depending on how it's approached, it can be a great opportunity to share, learn, and be friendly. I've had great experiences in the past with well meaning people and it was a very respectful, mutual understanding of one another's worlds.
This was the Spanish Inquisition, and no, I did NOT expected it, as is tradition.
She was very upset that I would not believe in her God, "creator of everything, existence itself, the world". She asked me what I believed in and what the purpose of life was to me, and I answered as I was backed into a corner here with no leadership on site. She made a point of my beliefs being pointless. She asked "so, you don't believe in thou shalt not kill or steal" and I smiled at her. I told her we have one belief harm ye none. I, myself, am a vegetarian, I don't even kill bugs in my house.
She countered with "being a good person isn't enough to get you into heaven as there can be no forgiveness without the shedding of blood". I shook my head and said we don't believe in heaven or hell. There's no need to shed blood.
Her closing statement was a very frustrated "I hope you come to Jesus". I nodded and thanked her before the conversation finally died a violent, drug out death.
My other coworker, Martha, who's also Christian and wasn't a part of the trans hate, told me later that she believes in spreading The Word but that Sandra was too harsh. Martha was not pleased with or in support of what she did or said. She reassured me that she adores me, will always help in anyway, and thoroughly enjoy working with me and the humor we share. Seeing that display definitely left a mark on her, though, and I think Martha may have some new thoughts on Sandra, now.
I know I probably shouldn't have said anything at all, but I lack the ability to stay silent in the presence of hate and violence. I can't keep my dignity at the end of the day if I just clam up and put my head down.
I only spoke about my beliefs out of nervousness at the aggression Sandra was displaying. It felt like if I didn't answer, she'd freak out hard. So, it was an attempt at appeasing her and giving her what she wanted; someone to throttle.
The coworker with the pagan husband, we'll call her Liz, thanked me later and said her husband was happy to hear he's not alone. I told her that I think I upset Sandra and she waved it off and told me not to worry. That made me feel better.
I can't go to anyone about this, even though it's making me increasingly uncomfortable and the level of aggression seems to be increasing. I'm waiting for her to pop off at the wrong time and someone else take offense. She regularly engages in this kind of speech with customers and I know one day, she'll say the wrong thing in the wrong person's presence.
I'm on her radar now, and I know it's going to get worse. I'm hoping it'll either come to a head with a customer or I can get transferred soon.
It's making me very ill at ease, though.
Have any of you ever been here before?

2023.06.01 01:01 Fullmetal_Animator Thoughts on Blood Maridian by Cormac McCarthy?

I decided to have another read through this contrnder for the great American novel because I know that Hollywood is making another attempt at a film adaptation, with McCarthy serving as a producer and John Hillcoat directing.
Honestly, I loved the book for its rawness, atmosphere and its brutal look into the human condition in the old west, even though it is still a savage enough story with the extreme violence, genocide racism and other nasty themes. For me, those are aspects that make it all the more emotionally compelling considering its setting and characters, though it is also why there were at least three previous attempts at a film adaptation that caused producers to chicken out and abort a film because those themes got way too real for them.
Anyway, if they stick to it this time then I will be pretty excited to see a film adaptation made but I was wondering if anyone else wanted to share their thoughts on the book's merits?

2023.06.01 00:53 Disneapolis Can you limit board members access to your unit?

Our documents are incredibly vague, and our treasurer is a non-native speaker who loosely interprets them however she needs to given the situation. She also backpedals if you quote her previous emails, and has discriminated against me in the past for my disability status, gender identity and sexual orientation.
I have had to invoke the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act for several individual needs with the support of the other three board members and her vocal opposition, and resigned from the board due to her retaliation.
She wants access to units in the event of an emergency. I’m totally fine with this, but I would prefer if only certain board members have access. I’m perfectly happy to share my pin for emergency use only, but would prefer to set up one for one time use only.
I just don’t trust her not to enter the unit without consent, as she is pretty aggressive when it comes to retaliation when she doesn’t agree with your interpretation of the rules, even if you quote the documents or her communications.
If HOA can limit common elements like bathrooms and locker rooms to one gender, what would prevent an owner from similar requests, especially when civil rights are concerned? Totally prepared for trolls, but appreciate any support and suggestions.

2023.06.01 00:18 billytime69 Want to save money? I called 9 of the biggest insurance companies to compare their prices. Here is what I found.

TL;DR Travelers is the cheapest
I called 9 large insurance companies and got quotes for Auto, Home, and Umbrella coverage. Although the price to insure my home may be different from yours, it wouldn't be crazy to assume that those who were cheapest on my list would be cheap for you as well, and it may be worth a look.
For all these quotes, I included every discount offered that I was eligible for: prepayment, bundling, etc. For apps that I would have to download to watch my driving in exchange for a discount, I applied the full discount to the quote because I already have the app with my current insurance provider, and was able to achieve the full discount easily.
My wife and I live in a condo, have had no insurance claims, and have spotless driving records. We applied for fairly standard homeowner's and auto policies, but added a $50,000 sewage backup policy, and the umbrella policy is $1,000,000. Our deductible is $500 across the board.
Company Name
Total Cost / Auto Cost / Home Cost / Umbrella Cost

We had Nationwide, but we will be switching to Travelers immediately. Hope this information helps some of you out there.

2023.06.01 00:05 TreeTurtle_852 Can we just, please stop including marginalized species/races in fiction if we aren't going to address things down to the systematic level?

This rant is inspired by a video by NandoVMovies about the Droid problem in star wars, a quote from count Doku about Yoda and a scene in RWBY.
I have talked about RWBY and its handling of racism before buy I'm going to go a shorter route. I am going to pinpoint one single thing, one detail of a scene and explain why I'm tired of racism being included in fictional worlds. Here we go:
During volume 5 after failing to find other huntsman in Mistral, Qrow drinks at a Bat before exiting it soon after. During this scene, we can view a sign next to the doors of the bar Qrow exits. And what does it say? "No Faunus"
Now if you aren't familiar with RWBY, Faunus are another race of people with the key difference being their random animal traits and night vision (though this is fairly inconsistent even from the same character). It's made clear through the show that they're essentially the same as humans (except for the differences mentioned earlier) and both in and out of the show, direct ties are made to marginalized groups in real life with one of the people who worked on the show directly comparing Faunus to African Americans during the Civil rights era.
So I ask, fair gents, ladies and in-betweens, is this not wrong? Anybody who knows American history knows of segregation, the division between "White" and "Colored" people in everything from schools to water fountains. We know why it's harmful, we know why it's wrong, so surely in this context evidence of segregation should be bad, no?
This sign says, "No faunus". For whatever reason, the owner decided that faunus were excluded. This isn't a case of "no shoes, no shirt, no service". No no no, the owner is looking at a sentient being and going "you will not be accepted because you were born a faunuas". That's fucked up right? Worst yet... it's legal.
If you tried pulling that shit in modern times you'd get sued and have that sign be taken down, but the state a place must be in to where that sign is still up speaks volumes. We also see other no Faunus signs and other signs of racism so clearly, this isn't an exception. This isn't just legal it's the rule.
Now I might be remembering this scene wrong, but Qrow pays the barkeep so with his actions he's effectively rewarding a business that promotes racism and even then he's not telling them off or showing any negative emotions to something we can understand as fundamentally vile.
In fact... nobody in RWBY does. Hell even Blake doesn't do much in terms of aiding the faunus cause on-screen. Of course they focus their attention onto Adam who is trying to blow up Mistral academy, but nobody on team RWBY ever expresses ill will or complains that these laws are commonplace. Nobody in the extended cast, even Blake, seem to really put any on screen effort or passion towards this issue. We are only told that things are "getting better" off screen in volume 6, but this wasn't a result of their protest.
All they did was defeat the "bad faunus" who were going about it the "wrong way" and this is an issue we see a lot. In volume 1 we see Cardin directly picking on Velvet a rabbit faunus for her faunus traits (her large ears) and yet the main characters just... stand there. None of them confront Cardin, none of them tell him off. They just comment on how bad it must be for Velvet and then continue eating lunch ignoring what the show tries to sell to us as blatant racism.
The issue isn't that they're "racist" but that they're complacent and when the issue is systematic oppression of an underclass... do you really have that option? RWBY tries to deal with lots of moral subjects, but how can we trust team RWBY'S morals if they turn their heads at blatant racism whether it be individual or systematic?
In just two scenes, team RWBY seem like total assholes and they're our heroes. The people we're meant to trust.
This is why I'd rather fictional settings just abandon the idea of racism against different species/subspecies. Not because it cannot be done well, but because too many stories end up like RWBY.
These are two scenes. These two scenes don't even reach a minute in length. Hell one barely counts since it's just a part of the background set piece but already you can see how much I've extrapolated from it.
And you can't just say, "Don't think about it-"
I'm a Black dude in America I fucking wish I couldn't.
And that's what I despise.
If you take a race, say they're underprivileged and then slap an armband on them, you're making a direct connection to minority groups. The Jewish people in Nazi Germany for example had identifying armbands so people could know they were Jews and thus knew how to treat them.
You can't really go, "Just don't think about it" because you wrote that connection in. You've now firmly tied your story to a real horrific note in human history and you cannot just play pretend. That will not eliminate what happened to those people.
It's not a coat you can wear when you want and hang up when you don't. Every scene poses a moral dilemma and if you're not ready to think of what it entails, then you might accidentally stumble into a conundrum like say Star Wars.
Is Luke Skywalker a slave owner?
Well of course not... well except for the fact that his guardian, Uncle Owen, bought C3P0...
Well droids like serving others... except for the several cases in media where droids are shown revolting or fleeing from servitude the first chance they get when freed from their "programming".
Hell, how do we even know that when droids say they like serving humans that they're telling the truth? If a Droid fails its duties then it will be destroyed, so who's to say that a Droid who will die if not serving saying, "I love serving humans" is speaking the truth or trying to avoid being murdered?
When Kylo Ren tells Rey that she was sold, we know that a human being sold is very bad but what about another sentient being getting sold?
The writers probably didn't think about it, but your audience eventually will. And if you're going to write racism into your story... why do it for an audience that won't care/pay attention to it?
This is not a moral condemnation but a recommendation.
Research minority groups and their struggles.
If you do not want to spend every second agonizing the details or a simple interaction then I'd just say don't do it. If you borrow from something used to oppress a minority then think about what you're using and put it down if you cannot handle it.
If you're not ready to confront the idea that your heroes are complacent with horrible acts solely because they're in the group that reap the benefits, then just don't.
Edit: I mention Luke's father and just so you know, I'm referring to Uncle Owen since he serves as Luke's adoptive fatheparent. I had forgotten his name at the time so I just used "father" since that was the role, not realizing it could be confused with Anakin Skywalker. I've updated this so don't worry about it

2023.05.31 23:55 autotldr White House: We are against strikes on Russian territory, but it’s up to Ukraine to decide

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 42%. (I'm a bot)
At a briefing on Wednesday 31 May, John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications of the White House National Security Council, once again clarified the position of the United States on the conduct of hostilities on Russian territory.
Details: According to Kirby, the United States does not tell Ukraine what targets to hit and not to hit, nor does it indicate how Ukrainian forces should conduct hostilities.
Kirby added that the United States "Has been very clear to the Ukrainians both privately and publicly" that it does not support attacks inside Russia and does not want them to be carried out using American weapons.
Separately, he said that Washington has received assurances that F-16 fighters will not be used for attacks on the Russian Federation in the future: "And we have gotten these assurances at various levels: not just from President Zelenskyy, but also from other senior military and defence leaders in Ukraine."
Commenting on the drone strikes in Moscow, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said that Ukraine has the legal right to defend itself and can "Use force beyond its borders".
The German government says that international law permits Ukraine to strike at the aggressor's territory in self-defence.

2023.05.31 23:52 Ok_Grapefruit2109 Fantasy book with shapeshifting?

So I’m trying to find out the name of a book/ series of books I read back in perhaps 2010, but have fuzzy and possibly confused memories of it at best. Here are some of my key memories:
I realise this is probably a long shot, it was a long time ago and I feel like my brain could be mixing up stories or adding things? I tried to explain as best as I could but I’m sorry if this looks like my brain threw up.
Thanks for any help!

2023.05.31 23:51 asdfghjkl0303 Visiting Darwin in July! Things to do/see?

Hey Darwin! So I (23F) will be visiting my husband (24M) who is stationed in Darwin for about 10 days when he’s on leave in July. We’re American. We have a hotel booked in the city centre and just looking for tips & recommendations on what to do! He hasn’t done a whole lot of exploring in his time there yet. We have a day trip to Katherine Gorge booked- but that’s about it! I see mixed information about getting in the water in Darwin- so I’m assuming it’s best to just keep out? Any and all info is appreciated!

2023.05.31 23:47 ShivasKratom3 Is there a book that contains Japanese myths and folk heros?

I have been reading the epics from different countries. Not just mythology but heros- real and myth- that countries cling to and make art and movies of
Was reading the sagas from Norse countries and then Beowulf and King Arthur.
I then read some Indian myths and the Mahabharata
Then I read some "american myths" about cowboys and whatnot
Now I'm looking for a book that would contain stories about samurai and vanquishing demons. Classic folk tales and myths that would represent Japan?
I've read about minamoto yoshitsune and loved it. I read the 47 ronin and loved it. Read about Saigon Takemori and loved it. Are there any books along these lines with Japanese folk heros and maybe some that are more mythology/legend? Legends like King Arthur or Johnny Appleseed or Jon of Arc or the 300 Spartans or the Monkey King?
Edit- guess I wrote this funny can someone point me to a specific title or collection that would fit these guidelines.

2023.05.31 23:41 jupiter_surf Reading & movies

I understand that autism presents differently in people, but I am wondering, for readers, do you see the deeper meaning in the books you read and the movies you watch? For example, if you watch a movie that’s visually unusual, maybe commercially considered boring or dull, but in the finer details is actually extremely smart, do you pick up on that?
Real examples for me occurred when I watched The House That Jack Built, or when I read/watched American Psycho; I see it as it is, but I sit and think about how much more incredible it is when you look past what you’re seeing and actually understand the true creativity behind it. A quirky looking scene which people may think is odd or boring, to me, is absolutely interesting.
In The House That Jack Built, the movie IS quite visually strange, but when I watch, all I can think about is how (IMO) it portrays human evil, a pure, remorseless, detached from reality psychopath in an extraordinarily real way, while a friend would sit besides me utterly bored.
This is long, I understand if this doesn’t gather much interest, but I am very interested to see how other autistics perceive movies and books in regards to the words/visuals vs the finer details behind them
