2023.06.01 00:30 RedNovember42 How honest should I be with my NDad on our upcoming trip?
25M with a difficult relationship with my father, needing to bounce my situation off of understanding people.
Some background: I'm working, independent, single and living a few hours from my parents who are still together. Great relationship with my mum, bad relationship with my dad. He has a bad relationship with everyone - his parents, siblings, me, my mum and my siblings.
He has never been physically abusive, but I would describe him as emotionally abusive, and a jerk. Not 100% of the time, but the majority. I keep my dealings with him as minimal as possible, however he is delusional and thinks he has a great relationship with his kids. We all hate him. My mum hates him but through her own south asian brainwashed upbringing, divorce never felt like an option - this was ingrained into her by her own parents, due to the cultural stigma.
When was a child, I wished for nothing more than my parents to separate, so that I would never have to see my dad again. He would work abroad for months/years at a time - when he wasn't around, the house was relatively happy and peaceful. When he was back, there would be a tense atmosphere, everyone defensive, walking on eggshells. He was always very critical of all of us. And unpleasant. Would chastise us for not proactively wanting to spend time with him or look after him.
He took an early retirement and spent the last decade bumming around the house being lazy. An example to set the scene of his behaviour: As a child, if I was at home while my mum was at work, I wouldn't come out of my room to eat because he would tell me off for making myself a sandwich and not one for him. He would try and make me feel guilty or stupid. I felt as a young teen that it was not my responsibility to make sure my capable and adult father was fed - if anything, that's a parents obligation to their children. So to avoid the confrontation, I just wouldn't come down and eat. I wanted to eat but I would rather just go hungry. Even as I type this, I feel stupid, like I'm not valid for hating him as much as I do, but it's hard to list all the things he has done to make me hate him and justify my feelings. More recently, my misgivings with him have revolved around larger issues - like being actively obstructive and constantly negative to my goals such as choosing to live away instead of in the family home, or marrying my girlfriend at the time (he would nitpick and argue that there was something wrong with her, or that I was too young and shouldn't be looking to get married, or that it was not the right time of year...any excuse). The relationship didn't work out for other reasons, but his involvement certainly put a strain on things.
I'm not sure why I'm venting all of this. I agreed to go on a trip with just him for a few days and the thought of being boxed in a car with him for several hours is spiking my anxiety. I'm not going on this trip because I wanted to, but he told me going on this trip would mean a lot to him - and he is so persistent that refusing would just be more work and confrontation for me in the long run. And I don't do too well in conflict. I get emotional and fail to articulate myself well.
It's inevitable that some deep resentments towards each other from the last 20+ years will come out (as they have in prior trips like this) but I just wanted some guidance on how to handle him and stay calm, and how honest I should be with my feelings. I have learned over the years that often it is best that I conceal my true feelings from him. I speak to my mum almost every day and see her at my grandparent's house some weekends but we keep this secret because he would be so jealous and explode, demanding explanations for why he has been excluded. He has seldom been receptive to any feedback or showed any interest in changing to become a kinder, more understanding person.
Sorry for the long rambly post. Some empathy and advice on how to deal with him would be appreciated. Even asking questions to understand the situation better would probably help me if anyone even cares.

2023.06.01 00:30 swatlord WGU addresses the recent attempts to phish students with fake internship opportunities
| Verbatim from the email: Important – Phishing Email At WGU, safeguarding your valuable personal information from scams is a top priority for us, as well as educating you on ways to protect yourself from scams. That is why we want to make you aware of a recent phishing email scam that some of our students have recently received and provide tips to help you manage it. Important Information to Know Scammers are contacting our students via email in hopes of gaining your trust so they can access your account, steal your information, or receive payment. Below is an example of a phishing email recently received by some of our students, which provides information related to an intern position at the university. This is a phishing scam where the sender is asking the recipients to call a phone number for additional information. https://preview.redd.it/x6ro9t5hba3b1.png?width=1844&format=png&auto=webp&s=73177c68736b27676bb9ce9d909217ba2161b18b Phishing Email Red Flags Remember to always be cautious and skeptical of unexpected email, especially when you are unsure who the sender is. Also, be cautious of someone outside of the university making offers related to WGU, like in the email example above. The email above originally included multiple recipients in the To field. Watch out for mass email sends, even if it appears to be coming from someone within WGU. Subject lines containing great offers or threatening statements are meant to elicit an emotional reaction. Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it usually is. Messages with a generic greeting, especially ones regarding financial transactions or job offers are suspicious. Phishing emails can take many forms. In general, be extremely cautious when the sender is asking you to click on a suspicious link, download attachments, or to call a phone number. Next Steps Remember to delete any suspicious email you receive and do not forward to anyone. If you inadvertently clicked on a link within a phishing email or provided any personal information to someone outside of WGU, please contact the WGU Service Desk by calling (877) 435-7948 or emailing [ [email protected]](mailto: [email protected]). 2023.06.01 00:30 Emozziis Are 80s enough?
I'm a current ST student I'm inmy third week of a year long program and so my question is, is scoring in low 80s to high 80s on tests tests good enough?
My first lecture exam I scored an 88/100 and instrument exam and a 98/100. That was with a little study time.
My second lecture exam I got an 81/100 and and 80/100 on instrument exam. This was with only looking over the material 10 minutes before the exams started.
Other students in the class are scoring in the low 90s to high 98 range with only one student being the lowest at 54 for the exams(no idea who canvas just gives us the numbers).
Am what I scoring recently good enough to become a CST? I know I need to put more effort into studying but I work full time and can't afford not I don't qualify for fasa or loans.
My class starts at 8 to 1 and I'm at work by 4 to midnight everyday, by the time I get home i go to bed to get up by 6:30 each day. My only free times to study are Friday Saturday and Sunday which is when our school library is closed so I can't even check out instruments. (this is just context on why I don't study as much as I should be)
I just want to know if my scores are enough to keep trying as a cst. I'm just feeling discouraged I guess.

2023.06.01 00:29 BiteMyWolverine (just sharing/no advice needed). Just had a really bad date
So, i (m18) matched with a woman (f18) on bumble a few days ago. We had a really good convo and seemed to have a lot in common and needless to say, it was flowing great. she seemed eager to talk to me and was actually trying to get too know me.
we moved things to number and talked for about two more days and eventually we decided to meet earlier..awful, just awful
she literally couldn’t find me when i was at the other end of the street. i had to watch her car drive from one section of my apartment complex to another and then pulling out and back in to the complex, and then drove around in circles, all while i was standing at the end when i was on the phone with her. i was giving her very basic, simple instructions and she just..couldn’t follow them. She also didn’t have knowledge about a lot of basic things..for example i asked her if her car was a sedan or SUV so i could flag her down and she straight up said “idk.” great.
well, i get in the car and we drive to this breakfast place to get coffee and..awkward. we talked for a bit and whatnot but the convo wasn’t flowing very well.
when we got there, that’s when i officially wanted to leave. she fumbled with her hands the entire time while we were at the restaurant, was actively AVOIDING eye contact and not talking. at all. if i asked a question i got a mumbled, one word response and she just looked away.
afterwards we drove to a thrift store cus she wanted to look at vinyls and the entire time i tried to make convo or suggest an album to her..silence. one word responses and shaking her head and going “mhm.” when we left the store she walked out and slammed the door right in my fucking face without looking back.
finally she took me home, i awkwardly left and texted her how i truly felt, letting her know this was quite uncomfortable for me. no response, nothing. which is fine with me. but wow. worst experience ever

2023.06.01 00:29 Patriotupinarms Red Flag It Happened To me
I'm hoping this will educate and help some of you prevent this from happening to you.
My gf and I had been together for over 4 yrs. lived together for 3 yrs. She purchased a house and mortgage was in her name. We started hitting a rough patch and I suggested we breakup. She asked me to stay for finacial reason and I agreed to do it for 6 months and insisted if I was staying at the home that we stay together.... one day I hit the boiling point and told her I was done and wanted nothing to do with her and gave her an exact date I was moving.
The next morning I started gathering my shit to start moving items I wasn't using often. I came home from work and was locked out.... she had went to a judge and got a court order of protection. They took all my guns and ordered me to turn in all firearms....
I contested the claims by going to court. She claimed physical abuse, sexual abuse (while dating), and she was scared for her life because I own guns.... I hired a lawyer and absolutely destroyed her in court. She had no proof or witness to backup any allegations but she turned on the water works like a lying cunt she is.
The judge won in her favor after me having video evidence, multiple witnesses and character references and demonstrating this out of spite to take my guns so I can shoot matches.... I still lost.
I now can't own ammo nor guns for 2 yrs.. even though I haven't had any charges brought against me or done anything wrong.
The morale of this story is protect your guns and if your gf is being a can't leave her immediately and go cry wolf apparently to the police first...
There's definitely a thing called woman privilege

2023.06.01 00:29 TK44 Take advantage of Specialized sale of the Stumpy alloy or hold off?
Noticed the stump jumpers base model is on sale at the moment and I'm just about in striking zone after saving up for a bit. I'd be coming from a 2014 Cannondale Trail 4 that has seen some upgrades over the years, but ultimately is showing its age through the low end components.
I talked to my LBS yesterday and rode the stumpjumper in question and was super impressed with it. I realize the component group isn't the best but I'm no stranger to doing upgrades as I go along (I actually have always liked piecing things together!). Even the guy at the shop said it would be a good buy- vest the piss out of it, and then upgrade things slowly as they start to fail a bit.
Now- the question is do I save a little more and maybe look for one that's a few years old already with some upgrades, or do I go new with this sale and push the eventual costs down the road? My biggest concern on used is possibly buying something that is on the verge of needing rebuilds- I really want to have a turn key bike this season. I've already had too much downtime this year with all the repairs on my current rig. I'm so new to the full squish world that I'm not even sure where I should be looking for issues on a used ride.
Use case: one or two rides a week with fellow asthmatic dad's in the Buffalo Creek area. We aren't racing even eachother- just grinding out the climbs to bomb the descents. Will see some lift rides at the local resorts as well.

2023.06.01 00:29 aura-bear-101 Got an Interview at a School I Really Didn't Want
Hey everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to post to, but here it is.
I (21F) just graduated college. I am in a Master's program to get my teaching license. I have been putting in applications to teach everywhere. I want to stay close to my college town because I am tired of living at home (for reasons too long to list here).
I applied for the school I attended in high school, thinking they wouldn't even look at me. Well, low and behold, today they call me wanting to interview me next week. I do not want to teach at this school.
My high school experience sucked. My high school is in a small town with a clique. If you weren't/aren't in this clique, you can basically kiss your chances of making any sports or athletic teams good-bye. I hate that about this school.
I was constantly overlooked academically for this very same reason. I was never given any extra help or honors, despite taking 5 AP Classes during my high school years. This school was part of the reason I chose a college almost 2 hours away after graduation.
Now, I'm in an awkward situation. My grandparents really want me to work at this school so I'll be close to home. I have told them time and time again I do not want to work at that school! I have another interview for a school tomorrow closer to my college town. I really want to work at that school.
I'm worried that even if I do get the job for the school I want my grandparents will still try to force me to go with my high school because it's my alma mater. I can already hear you all in the comments saying "you're a grown adult, do what you want", but it's not as easy as that.
I have no money (I'm working part-time at daycare now) and my car is owned by them. The school I would work at is 30 minutes from my college town. Public transport is not an option because this is the South. We don't have that here.
I'm looking for any kind of advice you all can give me. Good or bad. I'm really stuck here.

2023.06.01 00:29 JoshAsdvgi The Fate of the Turtle
| The Fate of the Turtle In a very hot summer time, far away to the east, was a beautiful little lake where two wild ducks made their home, and passed their days swimming and playing in its clear waters. They had it all to themselves, except for a turtle, who was many years older than they were, and had come there before them, and, luckily, instead of taking a dislike to the turtle, as so often happens when you have only one person to speak to, they became great friends, and spent most of the day in each other’s company. All went on smoothly and happily till one summer, ‘when the rains failed and the sun shone so fiercely that every morning there was a little less water in the lake and a little more mud on the bank. The water-lilies around the edge began to droop, and the palms to hang their heads, and the ducks’ favourite swimming place, where they could dive the deepest, to grow shallower and shallower. At length there came a morning when the ducks looked at each other uneasily, and before nightfall they had whispered that if at the end of two days rain had not come, they must fly away and seek a new home, for if they stayed in their old one, which they loved so much, they would certainly die of thirst. Earnestly they watched the sky for many hours before they tucked their heads under their wings and fell asleep from sheer weariness, but not the tiniest cloud was to be seen covering the stars that shone so big and brilliant, and hung so low in the heavens that you felt as if you could touch them. So, when the morning broke, they made up their minds that they must go and tell the turtle of their plans, and bid him farewell. They found him comfortably curled up on a pile of dead rushes, more than half asleep, for he was old, and could not venture out in the heat as he once used. ‘Ah ! here you are,’ he cried; ‘I began to wonder if I was ever going to see you again, for, somehow, though the lake has grown smaller, I seem to have grown weaker, and it is lonely spending all day and night by oneself !’ ‘Oh ! my friend,’ answered the elder of the two ducks, ‘if you have suffered we have suffered also. Besides, I have something to tell you, that I fear will cause you greater pain still. If we do not wish to die of thirst we must leave this place at once, and seek another where the sun’s rays do not come. My heart bleeds to say this, for there is nothing — nothing else in the world — which would have induced us to separate from you.’ The turtle was so astonished as well as so distressed at the duck’s speech that for a moment he could find no words to reply. But when he had forced back his tears, he said in a shaky voice: ‘How can you think that I am able to live without you, when for so long you have been my only friends ? If you leave me, death will speedily put an end to my grief.’ ‘Our sorrow is as great as yours,’ answered the other duck, ‘but what can we do ? And remember that if we are not here to drink the water, there will be the more for you ! If it had not been for this terrible misfortune, be sure that nothing would have parted us from one whom we love so dearly.’ ‘My friends,’ replied the turtle, ‘water is as necessary to me as to you, and if death stares in your faces, it stares in mine also. But in the name of all the years we have passed together, do not, I beseech you, leave me to perish here alone ! Wherever you may go take me with you !’ There was a pause. The ducks felt wretched at the thought of abandoning their old comrade, yet, at the same time, how could they grant his prayer ? It seemed quite impossible, and at length one of them spoke: ‘Oh, how can I find words to refuse ?’ cried he, ‘yet how can we do what you ask ? Consider that, like yours, our bodies are heavy and our feet small. Therefore, how could we walk with you over mountains and deserts, till we reached a land where the sun’s rays no longer burn ? Why, before the day was out we should all three be dead of fatigue and hunger ! No, our only hope lies in our wings — and, alas ! you cannot fly !’ ‘No, I cannot fly, of course,’ answered the turtle, with a sigh. ‘But you are so clever, and have seen so much of the world – surely you can think of some plan ?’ And he fixed his eyes eagerly on them. Now, when the ducks saw how ardently the turtle wished to accompany them their hearts were touched, and making a sign to their friend that they wished to be alone they swam out into the lake to consult together. Though he could not hear what they said, the turtle could watch, and the half-hour that their talk lasted felt to him like a hundred years. At length he beheld them returning side by side, and so great was his anxiety to know his fate he almost died from excitement before they reached him. ‘We hope we have found a plan that may do for you,’ said the big duck gravely, ‘but we must warn you that it is not without great danger, especially if you are not careful to follow our directions.’ ‘How is it possible that I should not follow your directions when my life and happiness are at stake ?’ asked the turtle joyfully. ‘Tell me what they are, and I will promise to obey them gratefully.’ ‘Well, then,’ answered the duck, ‘whilst we are carrying you through the air, in the manner that we have fixed upon, you must remain as quiet as if you were dead. However high above the earth you may find yourself, you must not feel afraid, nor move your feet nor open your mouth. No matter what you see or hear, it is absolutely needful for you to be perfectly still, or I cannot answer for the consequences.’ ‘I will he absolutely obedient,’ answered the turtle, ‘not only on this occasion but during all my life; and once more I promise faithfully not to move head or foot, to fear nothing, and never to speak a word during the whole journey.’ This being settled, the ducks swam about till they found, floating in the lake, a good stout stick. This they tied to their necks with some of the tough water-lily roots, and returned as quickly as they could to the turtle. ‘Now,’ said the elder duck, pushing the stick gently towards his friend, ‘take this stick firmly in your mouth, and do not let it go till we have set you down on earth again.’ The turtle did as he was told, and the ducks in their turn seized the stick by the two ends, spread their wings and mounted swiftly into the air, the turtle hanging between them. For a while all went well. They swept across valleys, over great mountains, above ruined cities, but no lake was to be seen anywhere. Still, the turtle had faith in his friends, and bravely hung on to the stick. At length they saw in the distance a small village, and very soon they were passing over the roofs of the houses. The people were so astonished at the strange sight, that they all — men, women and children — ran out to see it, and cried to each other: ‘Look ! look ! behold a miracle ! Two ducks supporting a turtle ! Was ever such a thing known before !’ Indeed, so great was the surprise that men left their ploughing and women their weaving in order to add their voices to their friends’. The ducks flew steadily on, heeding nothing of the commotion below; but not so the turtle. At first he kept silence, as he had been bidden to do, but at length the clamour below proved too much for him, and he began to think that everyone was envying him the power of travelling through the air. In an evil moment he forgot the promises he had made so solemnly, and opened his mouth to reply, but, before he could utter a word, he was rushing so swiftly through the air that he quickly became unconscious, and in this state was dashed to pieces against the side of a house. Then the ducks let fall after him the stick that had held up their friend, and which was of no further use. Sadly they looked at each other arid shook their heads. ‘We feared it would end so,’ said they, ‘yet, perhaps, he was right after all. Certainly this death was better than the one which awaited him.’ submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 00:29 RealWildChild_ What to do about the on going vacant property problem in Winnipeg?
Last Thursday I was going for a nice bike ride. I was riding down William Newton Ave, when I noticed a two story house that had been boarded up had the plywood that covered up the front door broken off. Since the problem with people squatting in vacant homes and the on going fires in them. I decided to phone 311 to let them know about it. I was on hold for about 15 minutes before I reached someone. I told them I was concerned that some squatters might be staying in the house and that there could be a risk for a potential fire. I had a right to be concerned because a two story house on Nairn Ave had, had twice gone up in flames. The lady was pretty understanding that I was talking on the phone to and said it would be June 20th before anyone would come out, I'm assuming a by-law officer. I didn't realize it would take that long for someone to be sent out and figured it would probably be too late by then.
Well sure enough last night the house I had phoned about had a fire in it. I can't say I'm surprised but I kinda felt useless since there wasn't much else I could think of to do but call in my concern. I really hope they crack down on these landlords that just neglect these properties. I'm glad the fire fighters showed up and put out the fire in a timely manner, the house next door could have caught fire as well. Luckily no one was hurt.
Now to the people how live next door to a vacant house or property, are you upset or frustrated? Were you able to find a solution?

2023.06.01 00:28 MissionApartment9102 Weird Issue with iPhone and Bookmarks
I had a weird issue happen today. Not sure what it was, but for some reason there were two, what appeared home screen bookmarks that said "Password Reset" on my iPhone this morning. They were not actual "apps", but links which opened in Safari. One was blank, and the other went to a URL of passwordreset(.)microsoftonline(.)com. I tried to delete them, but I couldn't so, I wasn't sure where this was stemming from. I checked Safari, and nothing was there. I checked Firefox, nothing was there. Needless to say, it was really odd and I'm not sure what the deal was, but every avenue I tried, I wasn't able to remove these two bookmarks from home screen. I figured maybe my phone got hosed, so I decided to back up what I could and do a factory reset. I've spent a good portion of the day slowly restoring everything, but I figured I'd post up and see if this was a legit issue or something else got messed up. I do have MDM through my work, so also not sure if it was something that tried to push through and didn't work either. Just really strange since I'm not sure what could have caused those to show up. Also, a whois lookup non that micorsoftonline domain does come back to Microsoft, but it just seem not legit.

2023.06.01 00:28 Extreme_Nothing_7249 Fucked up Pain Management
Been in pain management for a few months. Before that I spent 50+ days in the hospital, many open major surgeries, near death etc. 15-20 mg oxy every 3 hours plus IV dilaudid and pain pump. At one point had an epidural for a week because narcotics didn’t help. Anyways, PM gives me oxy. Over the months, after everything I’ve went thru, I’ve developed an embarrassing tolerance. 40 mg barely touches my pain. Won’t even let me SLEEP. So I blow thru my script. Being so young, I don’t even want to take oxy everyday all day, because I do have some good days. But my body won’t let me go without a dose. I go into withdrawal. I have panic attacks DAILY thinking about WD. Can’t even enjoy a few beers or do anything because I’m shackled to these pills. Even on the good days. I stopped them cold turkey with the goal to stay off of them for enough time to go through WD and get to a point I can be free & only take them as NEEDED. Ended up going to the ER because I needed help to do so. Or else I would end up just taking the oxy. The ER Dr was amazing… sent me home with 30 suboxone pills. I’m doing a 5 day taper with the hopes to get thru WD and be free. Didn’t even realize suboxone is a narcotic. I have pain management appt tomorrow. How do I explain this to my Dr so that I can keep getting my oxy?

2023.06.01 00:28 SnooOpinions5508 I tried to fix what I did, and it bit me back harder. What should I do?
Hello all. Ill try to make it as short as possible. Last year when I was 20, I got caught up in drama between two 16-year olds at the time who were our close family friends (as in their parents). One badmouthed the other to me and someone else, and after a few times I ended up being alone with the one who got badmouthed. At the time I told her to keep her distance from number 1 since she was spreading rumors that were quite life ruining. At the time it felt right to warn her about it, god knows I want someone to do that to me too.
We went back home and she messaged me that number 1 spread a rumor that I am a lesbian. I am not, and not that I have anything against the LGBTQ+ at ALL, but I come from a conservative background where such a belief could quite literally ruin my life. I left it alone and before I knew she told her mom about this rumor, to make her own rumor seem less bad, which resulted in my mom finding out. She was furious and called number 1’s mom about this, and her daughter to tell them to not spread it further. A year has passed since then, and after my mom spend some emotionally intimate times with her mom, I felt bad about the fact that I did indeed kinda backstab number 1, even though it felt morally right at the time. The thing is that she ended up knowing that someone told number 2 about her talking bad, due to them confronting the situation. She just didnt know who it was. Since she knew that number 2 told me about the gay rumor, I figured that it would be a matter of time before she knew.
2 days ago I messaged her that I believe the rumor was said by her just as much as it couldve been made up by number 2, and that I’m not mad. I also told her that at the time things were emotional and I did badmouth her. She took it bad but we agreed to leave it behind us and move forward in separate ways, which helped me feel better about what I did, and could happen. I was wrong. Yesterday she told another family friend about whether she badmouthed her, to rule out that it was indeed me, and told her that there were lies about me being spread in the name of her. My mom panicked and told all moms about my gay rumor (for some reason), and begged them to keep it between them. She is now incredibly furious at me for “lighting up a forgotten candle”, and indirectly risking my reputation. Number 1 also is playing like the absolute victim after I confronted her about the whole situation spreading, enforcing that she will keep distance from all of us. I didnt reply back after that. Was I in the wrong? What am I suppose to do?

2023.06.01 00:28 AlbertoRomGar Open Source AI Is Not Winning. Incumbents Are
After the "Google has no moat" document was leaked, there's been a widespread conviction that open-source AI is thriving and has become a real threat to Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft.
I don't think the last part is true for one reason: If winning the AI race is a matter of reaching the largest number of users, incumbents don’t have competition at all. Google and Microsoft have huge deep moats. Not just money. Not just talent. Not just resources, influence, and power. All that too, but their true moat is that they
design, build, manufacture, and sell the products we use.
Microsoft has turbocharged
Bing and Edge,
365, and now
Windows. Google has enhanced
Search and
Workspace (including
Gmail and Docs). Incumbents in other areas are doing the same.
Adobe Firefly, now powering
Generative Fill on Photoshop, is a clear example on the image generation front. On the hardware side, Nvidia—the undisputed leader—has optimized its
top-notch H100 for LM inference.
The innovator’s dilemma portrays incumbents as beatable: Challengers with a solid will to pursue risky innovation could, under the right circumstances, overthrow them. But let’s be frank here; we’re not living under those ideal conditions: generative AI
happens to fit perfectly with the suites of products that Google and Microsoft and Adobe and Nvidia already offer. They create the very substrate on which generative AI is implemented.
Even if Google and Microsoft were to open-source
their best AI and allow the open-source community to flourish on top of freely-shared innovation, they’d still keep the moat of all moats: That who creates and sells the goods owns the world. The open-source community doesn't have a chance. Sadly, generative AI is slowly becoming an add-on to the incumbents' hegemony.

2023.06.01 00:27 Western_Bit6872 [DISCUSSION] Gibson Price vs Value: overpriced or simply not the best deal out there?
Gibson guitars are expensive, right?
And plenty of “unboxing-type videos” suggest that Gibson may not give their guitars as much love (outta the box) as we’d all want after paying a few grand for something.
Plenty of comparisons have been made between a Gibson and some other guitar and seemingly, there are plenty of options that are, at least, as good as well as cheaper.
BUT!
Does that mean that Gibson are too expensive? Or simply that there are more affordable options?
Gibson is a USA company, right? Other made-in-USA guitars seem to be about the same price. Fender’s USA models are a couple grand at least.
Now, it seems like Fender USA guitars are well constructed, painted, set up… I recently saw a video of a $1,700 (usd) Gibson Les Paul Special and the dude had to do a full setup. Right outta the box! So, have we been spoiled by other brands?
I suppose, comparing this to buying anything else: you don’t buy a brand new car, but before driving it home it’ll need a “tune up“.
But my curiosity, again: does this make Gibson overpriced? Or do other brands simply have a “better deal”?
If a $4000 Gibson came perfect. Perfect paint job, hand crafted, killer setup, nice case, all included with the purchase of [your] guitar,
Is THAT a “good deal”?
Or… to who would that be a good deal?
Studio musicians? Collectors?
I’m way too broke to blow $4100 on a 60’s Les Paul Special and then play a gig with it. I’d keep that thing safe, under a blanket… I’d probably only play it AFTER my kids went to sleep!
But plenty of people out there do indeed prefer these guitars and I’m curious… what do they know that I don’t?
I know a guitar won’t make anyone a good player. I know it won’t be magical… it’s just a tool. Rick Graham can make any amazing noise with any guitar!
But I’m just curious about some other opinions especially if you’d justify spending that kinda’ money on a guitar.

2023.06.01 00:27 lonekthx Check on your customers
Had to call in wellness check after I noticed a customer hadn’t picked up their mail in a few days, which was odd for them. Supervisor confirmed police found a body in the home when I got back to the office.
I felt something was wrong on Saturday but, due to the holiday, I didn’t call it in thinking maybe they were with family or something.
We run these routes daily and know our customers routines, if something feels off don’t hesitate like I did. I don’t know if it would have changed anything, but I should’ve listened to my gut.
Feeling extra crumby about this.

2023.06.01 00:26 mgineer One Year Surgery Update -- Experience after having Diverticulitis for Several Years
I had surgery one year ago in May of 2022. I had diverticulitis for a number of years. I was first diagnosed when I was 38. After my surgery last year, I said that I wish I would have had the surgery sooner. I still think it was too risky for me to wait as long as I did to have surgery.
Here’s a summary of my experience in the year since I had surgery:
- I have not had any additional episodes of diverticulitis since my surgery and I have not taken any additional antibiotics.
- I have been fully recovered from my surgery for probably nine months. At first, I was careful in the gym about doing too many leg lifts or crunches. That’s no longer a concern.
- My scars healed great. I used 100% silicone scar cream, which maybe helped.
- I still have diverticulosis in other parts of my colon. Because of this, I still minimize the amount of nuts, seeds, and popcorn that I eat.
- Based on my Doctor’s recommendation, I took Colace stool softener for several months to minimize straining. I took Colace daily for probably 6 months, then every other day for maybe another 3 months. Now, I only take it as needed. I did fell a little pain a couple of times after straining, so I am trying to be very careful about this.
- Overall, my diet is very normal / typical now. I eat a moderate amount of fiber. I don’t totally avoid any foods.
Here's the original summary that I posted a couple of weeks after my surgery last year in May of 2022. It summarizes my surgery experience and recommendations:
- Over the last couple of years my attacks became more frequent and more severe without me being able to identify a specific trigger. All of my episodes were uncomplicated and I was never admitted to the hospital. I could manage most attacks with fluids, diet, and rest. But I also had several attacks that required antibiotics.
- While I wanted to delay elective surgery, I also really wanted to avoid emergency surgery. I had a friend who had emergency surgery a year ago. His experience helped me re-frame whether it was a good idea for me to keep delaying my surgery.
- I had an attack in the middle of last year that required a round of antibiotics to clear.
- I did a colonoscopy in December and my Surgeon's advice was to strongly consider surgery.
- I had another attack in March. I had a CT scan done which showed severe diverticulitis and required another round of antibiotics. That convinced me that it was time for surgery.
- To recover from the attack and prepare for surgery, I was careful about what I ate, lost a few pounds, and got in better shape.
- The prep the day before surgery was similar to colonoscopy prep. My prep included taking antibiotics.
- Before the surgery, my Surgeon mentioned that the colon mostly experiences pain when expanding outward and that I wouldn't feel colon pain from the surgery. He was correct, I never felt internal pain like during an attack.
- My surgery was scheduled for 8am and lasted until 11am. I was in recovery for about an hour. I only remember leaving the pre-op area and then waking up in my hospital room.
- When I woke in the hospital room, I was not in much pain. Like maybe a level 2. The Anesthesiologist injected a couple of long-lasting numbing shots in my abdominal muscle which he said would last from 4 to 48 hours. I think it lasted about 8 hours for me which was helpful.
- The surgery pain I had was from the incision sites and from the gas used to inflate your abdomen. I had laparoscopic and robotic surgery with 4 small incisions and a larger incision on my lower right abdomen which was used for colon removal. I had 6.5 inches of my sigmoid colon removed.
- I did not have external stitches or bandages. All of my incisions are dermabond glued closed. It's like a layer of super glue over the incisions. I'm currently day 11 post surgery and all of the dermabond is still there.
- Lying in bed after surgery, I really didn't have much pain. Like maybe a 1 or 2.
- The pain when getting in or out of bed at first felt similar to an attack, like maybe a level 7. I also had some pain in my diaphragm and upper right chest / shoulder from the gas used to inflate my abdomen. The abdominal gas pain made it difficult to take a deep breath.
- My hospital did not "schedule" pain meds other than Tylenol. My surgeon prescribed stronger pain meds and muscle relaxers, but I had to "ask" for them. I took me some time to understand that I had to request the stronger pain meds. The pain meds made it much easier to get in and out of bed, sit, stand, and walk.
- The big objectives in the hospital were: a) standing, which I did the afternoon of my surgery, b) urinating, (I had a catheter inserted during surgery), which started happening the afternoon of my surgery, c) passing gas, which I think first happened the morning after my surgery, d) walking, which I did the day after surgery, e) bowel movement, which also happened the day after surgery.
- My surgery was Tuesday morning and I was discharged Friday morning. My wife spent the first night in the hospital with me. I had great night nurses and didn't need her the second and third nights.
- I was initially on a "full liquid" diet which allowed things like yogurt and pudding. After the BM, I was advanced to a low-residue, low-fiber diet which allowed solid foods.
- The hospital provided an "abdomen compression binder" which helped when moving and walking. I'd recommend buying one if the hospital doesn't provide one.
- For home I bought a bed step stool with a handle which helped getting in and out of bed.
- When I was discharged on Friday, I was prescribed a pain med and a muscle relaxer. My Doctor also recommended Colace stool softener.
- I think about 80% of my pain was from the larger incision site and 20% from my belly button incision site (where I also had a small umbilical hernia that was fixed during surgery. I never felt much pain from the other 3 small incision sites.
- I started tapering my at-home pain meds after about 3 days. I stopped taking all pain meds after 5 days at home (8 days after surgery).
- I'm currently on a low residue, low fiber diet. I have my 2-week follow-up appointment on Tuesday. I'll probably be allowed to gradually advance my diet.
- My post-surgery restrictions are: a) no swimming or bath for 4 weeks, b) don't lift anything heavier than 20 pounds for 6 weeks.
- I was able to take 2 weeks of short-term disability which was very helpful. I'm planning to go back to work next Tuesday which is 2 weeks post-surgery. My job is currently work from home and I don't think I'll have any issues. If you have a physically active job, you may want to plan for more time off.
I have diverticulosis in other parts of my colon, so I'll continue to be careful with my diet and potential triggers. I've avoided nuts, seeds, popcorn, and spicy foods. Having the right amount of fiber was important in managing my diverticulitis. Too much or too little fiber both caused issues. I standardized on eating high-fiber cereal (Kashi GO) for breakfast with kefir or a probiotic.
I'd tried a number of other things including VSL #3, mesalamine, butyrate, resistant starch. I didn't notice a benefit from these, but my condition may have been too advanced.
The pathology report from my surgery indicated that I did have a perforation in the past that healed itself. I feel good about having had the surgery. I hope you find this information helpful.

2023.06.01 00:26 ZForZimmer Fiancé got shots in her wrists and it’s working longer than the doctor has ever seen.
Hey all, my fiancé got shots in her wrists roughly 6 months ago. Her doctor said he’s never seen them last longer than 4 months before needing another shot or going right to surgery. Has anyone experienced them lasting this long?
She works from home/goes to online school so she’s constantly using a mouse and keyboard too.
Doctor recommend her just getting the shot again since it lasted so long, originally he said he does the shot just to last until she can get into surgery
Edit: after just glancing at other posts it seems like it doesn’t even last a month for most

2023.06.01 00:26 Alice687 Ear Wax Removal: What to Expect During the Procedure
| Explanation of the importance of ear wax removal Ear wax removal is important for several reasons: - Hearing: Excessive ear wax buildup can lead to partial or complete blockage of the ear canal, which can affect your ability to hear properly. Ear wax acts as a natural protective barrier, trapping dirt, dust, and other foreign particles that may enter the ear. However, when it accumulates excessively, it can cause a blockage that interferes with sound waves reaching the eardrum. Removing the excess wax can restore normal hearing.
- Prevention of complications: If ear wax is not regularly removed, it can cause various complications. One common problem is cerumen impaction, where the wax hardens and becomes impacted deep within the ear canal. This can cause symptoms such as pain, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and even temporary hearing loss. Removing the impacted wax reduces the risk of these complications.
- Ear health: Cleaning the ears and removing excess wax helps maintain overall ear health. When ear wax accumulates, it can create a favorable environment for the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. This can lead to ear infections, itching, and irritation. By regularly removing excess wax, you reduce the risk of these infections and keep your ears clean and healthy.
- Medical examination and diagnosis: Sometimes, excessive ear wax can obstruct the view of the ear canal, making it difficult for healthcare professionals to examine the ear during routine check-ups or when investigating ear-related symptoms. Removing the wax allows for a clear visual examination, making it easier to identify any underlying issues and provide appropriate treatment.
It's important to note that ear wax removal should be done carefully to avoid causing any harm to the ear. While some people may be able to effectively clean their ears using home remedies or over-the-counter ear drops, others may require professional assistance from a healthcare provider or an ear specialist (otolaryngologist) for safe and effective removal, especially if there are underlying ear conditions or concerns. Ear Wax Removal Explanation of the Procedure The procedure for ear wax removal can vary depending on the severity of the wax buildup and individual circumstances. Here are some common methods used: - Ear irrigation: This procedure involves using a syringe or a specialized irrigation device to gently flush warm water into the ear canal. The water helps to soften and dislodge the ear wax, which is then flushed out. Ear irrigation should be done with caution and under the supervision of a healthcare professional to prevent damage to the eardrum.
- Manual removal: A healthcare professional may use specialized tools like a curette or forceps to manually remove the ear wax. They will use magnification and adequate lighting to carefully grasp and extract the wax from the ear canal. Manual removal should be done by trained professionals to ensure safety and prevent injury.
- Suction: In some cases, a gentle suction device may be used to remove the ear wax. This method is often used when the wax is tightly packed or impacted. The suction device creates a vacuum that pulls out the wax from the ear canal. Similar to manual removal, this procedure should be performed by a healthcare professional.
- Ear drops: Over-the-counter or prescription ear drops may be recommended to soften the ear wax, making it easier to remove. These drops usually contain oils, hydrogen peroxide, or other agents that help break down the wax. It's important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the product label when using ear drops.
It's worth noting that DIY methods like cotton swabs, ear candles, or other objects inserted into the ear canal are not recommended for ear wax removal. These methods can push the wax deeper into the ear, cause injury, or lead to complications. It's best to consult with a healthcare professional for safe and effective ear wax removal, especially if you're experiencing symptoms or have concerns. Preparing for the Procedure If you're scheduled for an ear wax removal procedure, here are some steps you can take to prepare: - Consultation: If you haven't already done so, schedule a consultation with a healthcare professional, such as a primary care physician or an ear specialist (otolaryngologist). They will assess your condition, determine the best method for wax removal, and provide instructions specific to your situation.
- Follow instructions: Carefully follow any instructions provided by your healthcare professional regarding the procedure. This may include guidelines on medication usage, ear drops, or any necessary pre-procedure preparations.
- Medications: Inform your healthcare professional about any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. They will advise you on whether to continue or temporarily discontinue any medications that might interfere with the procedure or affect your recovery.
- Inform about medical history: Provide your healthcare professional with a comprehensive medical history, including any previous ear conditions, surgeries, or allergies. This information will help them tailor the procedure to your specific needs and minimize any potential risks or complications.
- Communicate concerns or symptoms: If you have any concerns or specific symptoms related to your ears, be sure to communicate them to your healthcare professional. This information can assist them in understanding your condition better and providing appropriate care.
- Avoid self-attempts: Refrain from attempting to remove the ear wax yourself using cotton swabs, ear candles, or other objects. These methods can push the wax deeper into the ear, cause injury, or worsen the situation. Trust the expertise of a healthcare professional for safe and effective removal.
- Stay informed: Familiarize yourself with the procedure and the expected outcome. Ask your healthcare professional any questions you may have regarding the process, recovery, or potential complications.
By following these steps and being prepared, you can help ensure a smooth and successful ear wax removal procedure. Remember to always seek professional medical advice for any concerns or issues related to your ears. Ear Wax Removal Techniques There are several techniques for earwax removal. Here are some common methods: - Ear drops: Over-the-counter ear drops or prescribed ear drops can be used to soften the ear wax, making it easier to remove. These drops usually contain oils, hydrogen peroxide, or other agents that help break down the wax. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional or the product label for proper usage.
- Ear irrigation: Ear irrigation, also known as ear syringing or ear lavage, involves using a syringe or a specialized irrigation device to flush warm water into the ear canal.
- Suction: A gentle suction device may be used to remove the ear wax. This method is often used when the wax is tightly packed or impacted. The suction device creates a vacuum that pulls out the wax from the ear canal. Similar to manual removal, this procedure should be performed by a healthcare professional.
It's important to note that the choice of technique depends on the severity of the ear wax buildup, individual circumstances, and the professional judgment of your healthcare provider. They will determine the most appropriate method for your specific situation. It's strongly advised against using DIY methods like cotton swabs, ear candles, or other objects inserted into the ear canal for ear wax removal. These methods can push the wax deeper into the ear, cause injury, or lead to complications. Always seek professional medical advice for safe and effective ear wax removal. Post-procedure Care After undergoing an ear wax removal procedure, it's important to follow some post-procedure care instructions to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. Here are some general guidelines: - Avoid touching or inserting objects: Refrain from touching or inserting any objects into your ears following the procedure. This includes cotton swabs, fingers, or any other instruments. Such actions can disrupt the healing process, cause injury, or introduce bacteria into the ear.
- Keep the ears dry: Avoid getting water or excessive moisture in your ears for a few days after the procedure. Moisture can impede the healing process and increase the risk of infection. If you need to shower or wash your hair, use earplugs or cotton balls coated with petroleum jelly to protect your ears from water.
- Use prescribed medications: If your healthcare professional has prescribed any medications, such as ear drops or antibiotics, make sure to use them as instructed. Follow the dosage and duration recommended by your healthcare provider to aid in the healing process and prevent infection.
- Monitor for complications: Keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms or signs of infection, such as increased pain, persistent drainage from the ear, fever, or worsening hearing loss. If you experience any concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
- Follow-up appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare professional. These appointments allow them to monitor your progress, ensure the effectiveness of the procedure, and address any ongoing concerns or complications.
- Gentle cleaning: If your healthcare professional advises you to clean your ears after the procedure, do so gently. Use a damp cloth or tissue to clean the outer ear, avoiding inserting anything into the ear canal. Do not attempt to remove any residual wax yourself; allow the ears to naturally clean themselves over time.
- Seek professional advice: If you have any questions, concerns, or persistent symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They are best equipped to provide personalized advice and address any issues that may arise.
Remember, the specific post-procedure care instructions may vary depending on the technique used and individual circumstances. Always follow the advice provided by your healthcare professional for optimal healing and recovery. submitted by Alice687 to u/Alice687 [link] [comments] |
