In Defense of Sherrod Brown - Part 6 - Tim Ryan vs Joe Biden + DeWine’s Coattails
Hello angry observers. Welcome back to the sixth installment of my Sherrod Brown series! This one is again about Tim Ryan, particularly his turnout and margins compared to Biden’s 2020 performance in Ohio. The goal with this one is to help us analyze where Tim Ryan got what he needed and where he fell short. This will tell us where, and by how much, Sherrod Brown will need to improve on Tim’s numbers.
MAP 1: RYAN VS BIDEN AVERAGE TURNOUT
This is a county map showing the average turnout for each county between the 2022 midterms and the 2020 presidential election. Green counties had higher than average turnout in last year’s midterm compared to the 2020 presidential, relative to the rest of the state.
To make this map, I took each county’s ratio of votes between the two elections and shifted them over the state average, 30.33% lower turnout in 2022 vs 2020.
MARGINS:. . . 0-1% highelower than average. . . 1-2%. . . 2-3% . . . 3-4% . . . 4-6%. . . 6-8%. . . 8%+
Important county numbers:
Franklin (Col.): -2.47% (basically 2.47% lower than average in 2022 compared to 2020) —
Delaware (Col. sub.): +8.58% —
Hamilton (Cin.): +0.52% —
Warren (Cin. sub): +4.63% —
Cuyahoga (Clev.): -4.53% —
Lucas (Tole.): -4.15% —
Summit (Akr.): +1.39% —
Greene (Dayt.): -0.56% —
Mahoning (Youngs.): +2.34% —
If there’s any number you want for any particular county(s) for either map, lmk
Let’s break this one down.
The first thing you’ll notice is a decline in turnout in most of the cities, with Toledo, Columbus, and Cleveland being the main ones. Meanwhile, Cincinnati, the most historically conservative of the biggest cities in the state, and the Youngstown/Akron metro saw higher than average turnout compared to 2020.
The rural counties were a mixed bag. Some saw higher turnout, while others saw lower. Counties in the south and Appalachian regions are the fastest shrinking in population and are also the reddest on the map, yet this trend did not hold up for the comparably declining Northeast.
And, as expected, our fastest growing suburban counties are the darkest green: Union and Delaware north of Cbus, and Warren northeast of Cincy.
In an effort to see what 2020 turnout would have resulted in for the 2022 senate race, I averaged out each county’s numbers to what average turnout looked like in 2020. After the adjustment, JD Vance would’ve still won by 5.72%, down slightly from his actual margin of 6.11%. It would’ve shrunk his 252,000 vote margin of victory down by around 16,000 votes by my calculations, or .39% less, a drop in the bucket.
I even went through the effort of adjusting each county by 40% of its population growth/decline from census info from the last decade, and Vance would still win by 5.63%. In other words, this would be Ryan’s margin if he had 2020 Biden turnout in each county but if each county also had its projected 2024 population. The reason the margin stayed almost the same is because rural decline and the decline of rust belt cities canceled each other out, as did growth in red suburbs and blue Franklin county.
Turnout alone was not going to save Ryan’s campaign. Like many of you I’d imagine, these results surprised me, but I found two explanations for them.
First off, we’re shifting turnout onto another notoriously high rural turnout presidential election, 2020. Rural turnout wasn’t higher than average across the board this midterm because I compared it to 2020, instead of, say, 2018. While many rural counties would’ve netted less votes for Vance, the red ones on the map would have netted more after the adjustment. On the flipside, Urban turnout in the rust belt was decent in 2020, but not astounding. Yes, getting four percent higher turnout in Cleveland would’ve boosted Ryan some, but it was never going to save him, given my next reason.
Second, as you’ll see on the next map, Ryan hardly over performed Biden in the cities and suburbs, especially in the more ancestrally Republican ones. Quite frankly, he didn’t get his margins high enough in the biggest counties for averaged turnout to have boosted him as much as it otherwise would have.
MAP 2: RYAN VS BIDEN MARGINS
This one’s a straightforward map comparing Biden 2020 and Ryan 2022’s margins in each county. Blue counties are where Ryan got the better margin, Red where Biden did.
MARGINS: SAME AS LAST MAP
(0-1% better than the other. . . 1-2%. . . 2-3% . . . 3-4% . . . 4-6%. . . 6-8%. . . 8%+)
Important county numbers:
Franklin (Col.): Ryan +1.24% (Ryan did 1.24% better than Biden) —
Delaware (Col. sub.): Ryan +0.53% —
Hamilton (Cin.): Ryan -0.42% —
Warren (Cin. sub): Ryan +1.73% —
Cuyahoga (Clev.): Ryan +1.60% —
Lucas (Tole.): Ryan +2.79% —
Summit (Akr.): Ryan +3.66% —
Greene (Dayt.): Ryan -0.56% —
Mahoning (Youngs.): Ryan -1.57% —
Across the board, despite doing less than two points better than Biden statewide, Ryan did better than him in almost every county, with four exceptions.
The first is Allen Co. in the northwest. This one’s a rural guy and I don’t have any real explanation for it, so I'd consider it an outlier. The second and third are Hamilton and Montgomery, homes of Cincinnati and Dayton respectively. These cities used to be very red, (Obama won Hamilton by 6 in 2012 for context, Biden got it to safe). DeWine put up enormous numbers here, so much so that I strongly suspect it weighed down Ryan significantly. The whole southwestern region went for DeWine by a landslide and his performance must have caused the ancestral republicans here to default to the GOP and vote for Vance more than it did elsewhere.
The fourth is the notorious Mahoning, home of Youngstown and the poster child for Obama-voting WWC ancestral democrats leaving the party for Trump. I really don’t know what went wrong here. It’s obvious the place is going red, but Ryan underperforming Biden in what was his own house district? It wasn’t even a regional thing; all the counties around it are blue here. It’s kind of funny because this really is ‘muh trends’ on steroids, but I still don’t have a clue what happened specifically here.
On the flip side, Ryan did very well in most rural parts of the state, putting up solid numbers in places like Appalachia and the rural rust belt. He focused much of his campaign on appealing to these voters and it showed.
One thing this map is excellent at illustrating is why Ryan did so much better among rural Ohioans than suburban and urban voters, and that is DeWine. Ryan’s ability to get the numbers he needed somewhere rested with how much DeWine would be dragging him down. When DeWine got Assad margins among swayable suburban voters because of his moderate appeal, it dragged Ryan down. When DeWine got Franklin and Cuyahoga counties down to likely, it showed in the senate race when Ryan ended up with Biden margins.
However, my theory is that a moderate Republican governor doesn’t have the same level of influence on rural voters living in rural counties that are already deep red. Being moderate isn’t going to get rural Ohioans to like you any more than just being a Republican would. DeWine didn’t seem to have the same magnetic pull on the ticket in rural counties, which allowed Ryan to narrow the margins by campaigning as a hardworking moderate democrat who can relate to the common man. It’s easier to get higher numbers somewhere where DeWine is outrunning Trump by 10, instead of 25 or more.
The more urban the county, the more DeWine outran Trump and dragged Ryan down when independent voters defaulted to the GOP and went straight ticket. The more rural and anc. Dem the county was, the more Ryan was able to play wholesome moderate dude and pick up Obama-Trump voters and make new inroads elsewhere by being there and trying.
The interesting thing is, 2024 is going to be the opposite of the midterm scenario. Trump is the biggest drag on the ticket in the suburbs, while his base appeal does wonders for him in the rural parts of the state. Assuming suburban trends hold in any capacity, Brown will have to perform better than Ryan in suburbia, while an “America-first” ticket the GOP base is more excited for has the potential to pull him down more in rural Ohio.
MAP 3: How important it is Brown improves on Ryan’s margin
This is a purely opinion based map I made categorizing each county by how important it would be for Sherrod Brown to improve on the margin Tim Ryan got. This is not exactly how important each county is to victory, but more what Brown would want from each of them if he were to win. Essentially how much work needs to be done there, margin-wise.
Categories: . . .
Dark Green: If he just gets Ryan’s margins here, he’s golden. These are mainly counties where Brown didn’t do much better than Biden did two years later, so Ryan’s slight improvement on Joe is more than enough . . .
Light Green: If Brown gets Ryan’s margin, he’ll be fine. Ideally, he’d improve on them slightly. . .
Yellow: Ryan did decently here. Brown would hope to get a percent or two higher to win comfortably, but it’s not a necessity everywhere. . .
Light Orange: Brown should be doing somewhat better than Ryan here. Winning would become very difficult if he were to get Ryan margins in most of these. . .
Orange: He should plan on improving considerably here. Many of these are ancestral democratic counties that Brown has been able to put up good numbers in while Ryan fell short of what he needed. . .
Red: You’re finished with Ryan’s margins here during a presidential election year. It should be a lot easier for Brown in Cuyahoga and Franklin without DeWine on the ballot and he needs to hold his grip on unionized places like Trumbull. . .
Maroon: If you’re putting up Ryan numbers, just throw the fucking towel in. Brown should be winning Mahoning by likely, not losing it, he should not be underperforming Biden in Cincinnati, and getting 2020 Biden numbers in rapidly blue-shifting Delaware in 2024.
As you can see Ryan pretty much got what Brown will need in most of rural Ohio, particularly in the ancestrally Republican parts of the state. Brown should hope his incumbency makes up the remainder. There are some rural counties which Ryan did perform very well in, but I know Brown can (and should) do so much better in due to his incumbency. If Ryan did eight points better than Biden in a particular county, but Brown did better by thirty in 2018, he should try and narrow Ryan’s margins here even further. These counties are mainly near the WV border.
Another thing, from old maps, we know that Ryan nearly matched Brown's numbers in the Cincinnati and Columbus suburbs, but they are also about what Biden got in them. Since these areas are quickly blue shifting, Brown should be doing better than Ryan regardless. Getting 2020 Biden/2022 Ryan numbers would likely mean Brown underperforming Biden a good amount there, which is not something I have on my 2024 Bingo card.
And again, it’s Trump at the top of the ticket instead of DeWine. Even though it’s a presidential year, there should still be less of the top-of-the-ticket drag that Ryan had to put up with in the big counties. While Brown can’t come into ancestrally Republican suburbs with the mindset of “they voted for me before, I’ll make sure most of them do it again,” Ryan proved that getting voters to ticket-split and vote for a democratic senate candidate for the first time is still possible. Biden improving in the Cin/Day/Col region by another five or so points, and Brown doing even a point or two better than that would cut into the GOP candidate’s statewide total significantly.
These suburbs are where Brown has historically had the weakest incumbency bonus (anc. reps), but also where his recent gains made up for his other losses from 2012 to 2018. The result was him winning by about the same margin both times. He’ll want to repeat this strategy to pad his losses elsewhere. A suburban voter in Warren county hopping on the Brown train for the first time means you can afford to lose another follower in Youngstown.

2023.05.31 23:47 General-Cycle-9436 canadian IB student from bc trying to make it out there

Hi everyone! Just created this account to not get identified lol. I'm from the southern parts of BC, Canada. I've listed my academic stats and some of the extracurriculars I'm most proud of. I won't include awards/publications as I don't want to be identified just yet. Please note that I'll be quite vague with a few of them, as I don't want to get identified 😅. I also have a few questions for you guys at the bottom of this post, so please answer them if you do know what to do!
INTEREST: BUSINESS AND COMMUNICATIONS
MY ACADEMIC PROFILE:
My Citizenship: Canadian and Japanese (will apply with Canadian one?)
GendeAge: 16 (making my IB examination session in May 2024 🙏🏻)
Demographic: Wasian, middle income (European dad, Japanese mom)
SAT: 1550 (superscore), 1520 (highest w/o superscore)
GPA: I do the IB program, with a few APs as my IB school did not offer them. I just finished my DP1 finals, and am sitting at a 42/42 (excluding TOK/EE, as my school is not including them for the DP1 report card). My course selections are:
IB Film HL - 7
IB English Lit HL - 7
IB Biology HL - 7
IB Spanish HL - 7
IB Bio SL - 7
IB Geography SL - 7
TOK - predicted 9/10 on my exhibition, haven't gotten my EE back yet. I wrote it in English.
Note - I don't think I'll get a 45/45 IB. Biology HL is getting pretty hard with all this plant stuff.
In terms of APs, I did:
AP Arts and Design - 5
AP Music Theory - 4 (I took this to prepare for my RCM theory exam - WILL NOT INCLUDE!)
AP Spanish Lit - 5
APUSH - 5
Research: Collaborated on a paper with some researchers from CERN through a Stanford professor (I took a chemistry "summer course" with him and was invited to do research - he had excellent connections, and I am still very grateful for that opportunity!)
Currently conducting independent research in my science lab at school. Getting my research supervised by my PHD science teacher. I want to submit it to some journals before the regular applications.
What I think: I think my academics are a relatively strong part of my profile. But, with many things, I can also be wrong. If there are some things that I should add/get/try, please let me know in the comments or DMs! I'm a very open person, and would love to chat about anything.

MY EXTRACURRICULAR PROFILE:
Essentially, my team (credit to them! I would not be able to do much without them) and I help big brands more on the financial and marketing side. We've been grateful enough to be recognized by the Canadian Government, and have worked with brands such as Lululemon and Canadian Tire. On the media side, we're currently working on securing something with Apple (sorry, can't share more details about it here), and have signed a partnership with Facebook (for our gaming sector), and the photography sector has been recognized and promoted by Nikon. We've been sent a few of Nikon's gear to test out - again, very grateful. We're also in the works in something with the New York Times for the news/media newspaper we own... very excited for it!Currently, we generate around 90k USD per annum. No more details will be shared about finances until the management team release the August financial report to the team.

I run the 100m/200m/400m/4x100m/4x400m relays. However, I'm pretty bad at everything except the 100m, where I've run a 11.14 (PB, legal, wind-aided (slightly)). Went to Canadian nationals with that score for my youth category (this was in 2022). Going to BC Champions for all events listed this year.

The non-profit works partially with the IBO as well as Crimson Education and the CEMC (@Waterloo, Ontario) to provide mathematics and STEM education for people less privileged in BC.

Internship @ Paramount over the summer. Very cool experience. Parents did not have enough money to fund the trip, so did it myself with my portion of the income with the media business.

We've currently helped around 3k students compete in business competitions (and win!). Business non-profit can be considered a "sector" of the media business, ig.

ARCT! I also love producing DNB and hip-hop, and may be getting a record deal to Interscope for it! Got some connections I'm trying to work with to get that to happen quickly. Also am part of a band that performed at some summer festivals in West Vancouver, BC, Canada & elderly homes, as well as street performances. By doing this, we've raised around 5k for dementia.
//
I am aiming for universities like McGill, Waterloo, some of the UCs (UCSD, UCLA, UC Berkeley), Upenn Wharton (why not), Harvard (why not), and Stanford (why not - might as well give it a try).
NOW, SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU GUYS:
What should I add?
Is there anything I'm forgetting?
Should I re-take my SAT? I think 1550 is a bit low compared to what you guys are getting. Is it good to see IB and AP at the same time on applications? I'm fine with not including my APs since I will get my IB Diploma (hopefully).
Feel free to DM me! I want to partner and work with you guys (either on research or extracurriculars) and partner and branch out.

2023.05.31 23:31 Andinio Reflections: "At leaders meetings held in New York and Brookline, Massachusetts, members reaffirm key points to advancing kosen-rufu."

I was a participant at the May 20th leaders meeting themed "A Triumphant New Era of SGI-USA Begins." Part A of the meeting were performances by the Ikeda Youth Performing Groups. We heard an experience from a family that had transformed tremendous difficulties and, in the process, transformed their district into one that welcomed many new youth members.
Ikeda Sensei sent a message to the participants which was just printed in the June 9th World Tribute.
My beloved American friends: I offer my heartfelt congratulations on holding this lively leaders meeting! Amid these unstable times, you have all been praying every day for peace as you strive diligently to expand our alliance of global citizens emerging from the earth.
This is a surely an accurate description of the times we are living in and the efforts of thousands of SGI-USA members today.
Nichiren Daishonin writes: “The great correct Law will spread without fail. … When Bodhisattva Superior Practices emerged from the earth, did he not emerge dancing?” (WND-I, p. 1119).
The mission you all possess as noble pioneers of worldwide kosen-rufu is immense. I hope you will advance using times of hardship as opportunities to accumulate tremendous good fortune, joyfully chanting daimoku like the mighty lion’s roar.
At this important time we face the horrors of war, political/cultural dissension, and the loss of a sense of who we are as a people.
Providing perspective, Sensei introduces some thoughts of second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda:
Those who stand and face hardship with faith demonstrate the incredible power of the Buddha. Such individuals can truly encourage others and become allies of the suffering.
We all have to reflect a bit here. Would a Buddha choose to appear in a time of solidarity, peace, and happiness? Or would a Buddha appear in a time where suffering and even existential survival is at stake? We all collectively are the Buddha and our joint mission is to navigate a path through chaos and dysfunction.
Let’s strengthen our faith and together joyfully advance, always on good terms with one another. Illuminate your communities and those you know with the light of encouragement and hope as your lives and efforts for kosen-rufu resound with songs of victory!
This very clearly explains the task ahead for us. It can seem difficult to maintain optimism viewing the state of our country and world. But we can deepen our faith, advance bit by bit, choose to live joyfully, and strive to "illuminate your communities and those you know with the light of encouragement and hope."
With our sights set on the Soka Gakkai’s 100th anniversary in 2030, let’s construct in the places of our vow exemplary castles of capable people, good fortune and happiness! I am praying for the health, longevity and safety of all of you and your families. Please take care!
Where are the places of our vow? They are not far away. They are our families, communities, workplaces, and districts.
My district had to face tumultuous and crushing waves during the pandemic. We persisted and grew despite covid and depopulation. We had our May discussion meeting the following Saturday. Even though we scheduled the meeting on the Memorial Day weekend, we had 10 people including two guests attending. We studied the topic of how to gain conspicuous and inconspicuous benefits. I shared my experience of struggling through many severe do-or-die moments over the course of 50 years and, as a result, enjoying so many benefits today. Another member shared a cloak-and-dagger story about a series of deaths in her nursing home and how her chanting led to the capture of the culprit. A third member could not make the meeting due to work, but ask someone to share his victory completing a CD.
We all left the meeting feeling light and inspired. We all experienced a bit of "lives and efforts for kosen-rufu resounding with songs of victory!"

2023.05.31 23:25 Life_Ad_9518 NBA Heights Of Many Players, Are Still Wrong (Lebron is not 6'9 without shoes)

3 years ago the NBA mandated that all players have their heights listed without shoes; opposed to the listings for the past 3 decades - heights with shoes. Fans saw many of their favorite players heights instantly drop. Some fans know the heights without shoes have always been listed in a player's combine numbers. We've always known 95% of player's height without shoes. Even Kobe Bryant's height without shoes was 6'4.75, confirmed in his last playing season https://fansided.com/2017/03/27/kobe-bryant-height-6-foot-4-lakers/
But, when the new height listing mandate occurred - some players heights somehow didn't change. Some fans hypothesized that this was because the players grew.
Lebron James height listing increased, from 6'8, to 6'9. At the NBA combine in 2003, Lebron was measured at 6'7.25 without shoes, 6'8 in shoes. Since the new listings, he's listed at 6'9, but pictures tell us he did not grow. Here is a picture with a 32 year old Lebron standing next to Kevin Love, who is listed at 6'8 now. https://render.fineartamerica.com/images/rendered/default/poste10/8/break/images/artworkimages/medium/3/kevin-love-kyrie-irving-and-lebron-james-david-liam-kyle.jpg
Kevin Love at his combine measured at 6'7.75 without shoes, so his 6'8 listing currently is correct. And he still looks about .5-1" taller than Lebron. https://media.gettyimages.com/id/610641166/photo/lebron-james-kyrie-irving-and-kevin-love-of-the-cleveland-cavaliers-poses-for-a-portrait.jpg?s=612x612&w=gi&k=20&c=Zh42Oas0cHbVEeIVZGlLKlfNj_0X3UQ0_IKgYiAFFrA=
Anthony Davis is listed at 6'10 and Lebron 6'9. https://cdn.nba.com/teams/uploads/sites/1610612747/2022/09/Davis-LeBron-Photo-Shoot-1600x900-0B1A5234.jpg
It looks like Lebron is as tall as he was at his combine 6'7.25 , and AD is 6'10 without shoes, there is almost 3", not only 1" height difference here.
I know everyone wants to mythologize how much of a physical specimen Lebron is, but he's not 6'10.5 in shoes. He's 6'8.5 in shoes, and should be listed currently as 6'7, but he didn't want to drop to 6'7 on his listing.
Giannis is not 7' without shoes. Even though he grew from 6'9 in shoes as a rookie, nobody ever thought he grew to 7'1.5....Here he is currently listed at 7'0, standing next to 7'1 listed Brook Lopez
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fdmk8foXkAkRITn?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
That's more than 1" difference. Giannis is probably 6'11.5 in shoes. Meaning he grew 2 inches since a rookie.
Every draft cycle inspires me to think about these heights, because fans see heights at the combine now, and think these players are shorter than before, or shorter than advertised. For instance, the Thompson twins just measured at 6'5.75 without shoes, and a lot of people are disappointed, saying they aren't 6'7. They are the traditional NBA 6'7, an inch taller than Kobe, an inch shorter than Lebron; and the same height as Andre Iguodala (6'5.75 at his combine without shoes).
Karl Towns, Embiid, and Giannis are all listed at 7'0. Why they lying to us?
https://media.gettyimages.com/id/920096908/photo/2018-nba-all-star-game-portraits.jpg?s=1024x1024&w=gi&k=20&c=4reQiMNzF5Sm9G0H1zw91eSDcAG0HACFLybFfm4AJlY=
If a player's height stayed the same or increased when the heights got re-listed, it's probably a lie, it should have decreased.

2023.05.31 22:47 lothar965 My biggest loss

My biggest loss
Hey everyone, I know this is medium nsfw. A year ago today I lost my: BFF, for baby, best boy, goodest boy Loki. He was a part of my life for 12 years. He was a stray that turned up at Mt mother's house trying to eat her chickens. Despite being relatively clean, young, and more or less well-behaved after posting online and going to every vet in town, posting found posters, checking for microchips, and etc I was never able to find hus home. Instead of turning him over to a shelter or rescue, I decided he was already home. What followed was an amazing 12 years with him. He passed on 5-31-2022. There is a web comic I will always remember, and it said that: Dogs may be a part of our life, but we are their entire life. Loki was always there for me no matter what ready to give me love, attention, exercise, or a reason to pet my floof and be lazy. Give your fur babies a hug, take them for a walk, play catch or fetch, and if they don't have fur, that is ok too. Share as you see fit so that hopefully everyone takes the time to give their best friends the attention they need or deserve

Gitex Tech Conference Searches for Fresh Ideas in Africa

Gitex Technology Week will make its first appearance in Africa, highlighting the best innovation and swift digital transformation on the continent. Over 900 businesses, governmental organizations, start-ups, and participants from at least 100 countries will be present throughout the three-day event, one of the biggest tech and start-up exhibitions in Africa.
For Africa‘s digital future, given the discrepancies in access to dependable power sources and steady internet connections, investment in telecom and infrastructure is essential.

Gitex Technology

Young programmers and entrepreneurs from Morocco and Africa will have the chance to network with individuals from the public and private sectors as well as regional and international investors and business incubators at the event.
With over 22 million Africans anticipated to enter the workforce each year, Africa is predicted to have the largest global labor force by the end of the century.
  • Gitex Technology Week in Africa showcases innovation and digital transformation.
  • Morocco youth entrepreneurs network with sectors, investors, and incubators.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa faces digital infrastructure disparity; the Gitex Africa conference aims to increase usage.
The widest disparity between digital infrastructure and consumption, with only 22% of the population using online services in 2021, is found in Sub-Saharan Africa. Business start-ups can interact with technology providers and finance gateways at the growth-focused Gitex Africa conference to increase internet usage and related prospects.
In 2022, over 900 agreements totaling $5.4 billion were raised by African start-ups, with recent and successful start-ups like Lamma and Viebeg enabling more effective procurement management.
The young population of Uganda has benefited from a quick shift to the digital age, making it a hub for entrepreneurship. 250 investors, 70% of whom are outside the continent, will be connected to innovators through Gitex Africa.
The conference seeks to inspire the next generation of digital and creative talent to strengthen the entrepreneurial culture and bring together leaders from the public and commercial sectors to create practical, meaningful results.

Good news, Sky kids! 📣
We have a new patch update for Sky:
🌈 Days of Color
🎵 Days of Music
✨ Other improvements
See the patch notes for more 📬 bit.ly/SkyPatch0215
Patch notes transcript:
Greetings, Adventurers! In our latest update, prepare to head into the remaining Season of Passage quests, plus two colorful and musical events. We also introduce a feature to make it easier to get new in-game currency items during events, a new way to create music, plus another round of bug fixes.

The Final Lessons of Season of Passage Lie Ahead

The second half of Season of Passage is here! The final Seasonal Quests approach, with new lessons awaiting. As you progress through the quests, don’t forget to check in with the Passage Guide in Isle of Dawn. Not only will you be able to receive hearts and unlock masks, you may even find a prop you can use to share a game of footbag with other players.
The lesson of each Seasonal Quest is best experienced when completed with groups of other players, but all of these passages can be completed independently if desired. Except for the first quest, all quests are held at set intervals every 15 minutes.
Be sure to unlock expressions and exchange Seasonal Candles for any cosmetics you want from the Seasonal Spirits before the Season ends at 23:59 on June 25th (all times PDT, UTC -7). Content can be enjoyed by all players who have progressed to at least Hidden Forest.
Players with a Season Pass will also have the opportunity to unlock all items from the Seasonal Spirits and the Ultimate Gifts available through the Season of Passage Guide.

Introducing Event Currency

As you may have read in our recent blog post, in this update we’re introducing event currencies, a new category of currency to make it easier to get new in-game currency (IGC) event cosmetics. The aim is to make it easier to unlock new IGC event items simply by playing most of an event, without feeling pressure to save up Candles or Hearts in advance.
Event currencies can be exchanged for new IGC cosmetics or event-related spells. They can be found in the main area where the event is played, or in some cases, alongside the event’s themed daily quests, so you won’t need to go out of your way to add this currency to your inventory. In the levels, event currencies vary in appearance to fit the theme of their event. In your inventory, they'll appear as a ticket icon with a symbol on it that will be related to its specific event.
The basics:
  • The currency for a specific event is available only while that event is being held.
  • Currencies won’t carry over from one event to another, but enough are available during an event to unlock this year’s new IGC cosmetics.
  • You won’t need to get all the event currency available every single day to unlock new event items.
  • Currencies are placed in set locations each day, and their location in an event will rotate.
Event currencies have some similarities to Seasonal Candles. However, they have some key differences, like:
  • At the end of an event, unused event currencies do not convert to Candles or anything else.
  • From one event to another, there may be a different total number of event currency available each day.
Please note that there’s a limited amount of event currency available for each event, so if there’s a new IGC cosmetic you want, take note of how much event currency you’ll need to unlock it before deciding whether to spend a lot of that currency on event spells.
Be sure to check out our blog post and FAQ page for more info!

Rainbows Return in Days of Color

The most colorful time of Sky’s year is about to begin. From 00:00 June 1st until 23:59 June 14th, join in a celebration of the diversity that makes our shared world so vibrant. This year’s update further builds on the core themes that have been the focus of the event since its debut in 2020 as Days of Rainbow, celebrating diversity, hope, and above all making the world inside and outside of Sky more inclusive for everyone.
Two event guide Spirits greet a double rainbow in Home that offers Light to collect. Talk to them for the option of teleporting to where the main festivities will be held: an area high above Daylight Prairie, expanded specially for the occasion.
During the first eight days of the event, colorful platforms will gradually become available one-by-one. Charge them with the aid of other players, and once enough people have gathered to charge each platform, receive a reward of Light—or, once all eight platforms are charged, something even more lofty and brilliant. A nearby closet and magical spell-lending geyser can help if you need to make a quick cape change.
As you explore the event area and complete themed Daily Quests, keep an eye out for small iridescent, bubble-like spheres. These are the special event-themed currency you can use to unlock this year’s new IGC Days of Color cosmetic. Players can collect 8 every day during the event—and on days with themed Daily Quests, up to 12 each day! Explore a bit more on the weekends and you might find an extra bubble or two…
Note: The total number of event currency intended to be available during the event is affected by a bug. To offset that bug, we’ll add 8 event currency to the inventory of all players who log in during Days of Color. The only thing you need to do to receive this is to log into the game.
This year we’re proud to share that we’ll once again be supporting The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people. The Trevor Project’s programs include crisis services, education, peer support for people around the world, and other efforts to ensure young people can have the chance to thrive no matter who they are. You can read about our 2022 campaign with the Trevor Project here.

Melodies and Harmonies in Days of Music

New songs are about to ring out to introduce a cozy event! From 00:00 June 26th until 23:59 July 9, Harmony Hall in the Valley of Triumph is hosting Days of Music, a laid back gathering for players of any (or even no) music experience.
A Jam Station in Harmony Hall allows you to easily create music of your own. This new feature lets you dabble out tunes for solos, duets, or even four-part ensembles with an interface that makes it simple to loop them together and adjust as you go along.
A group of four Spirits from the Seasons of Gratitude and Rhythm will also arrive for the occasion, each one offering an instrument to unlock. New music sheets have been added to the music sheet challenges, which will also give each Sky kid an extra boost of Light if they sit down to try their hand at one, no minimum skill level needed!
Two new instruments will be added to Harmony Hall's lineup: a saxophone for event currency, and a violin as an IAP added during the second half of Days of Music.
With the brand new event currency feature, we’re still working to make sure the final balance for everything will be in order—we’ll share those details on our News page closer to the start of the event, so stay tuned!
These event items can be found at the counter (or Spirit standing nearby it) in Harmony Hall:
  • Music sheet: 5 Candles
  • Harmony Hairpin: 50 Candles (returning item)
  • Event currency items: stay tuned for details when the event approaches!
    • Marching Band Hat
    • Saxophone
  • Planned to be available from July 7—Triumph Violin: $19.99
Apart from the music sheet, free trial spells for these items (and the violin, once available) can be found at the counter. Days of Music content is available to all players who have progressed to at least Valley of Triumph.

More Updates

  • A lot of features that have been added to Sky are directly based on player feedback—expanding the Friendship Constellation, in-game translation, even being able to interact with Spirits with hugs and high fives (as just a few examples). The latest addition based on player requests: Huggable plushie props. Go forth and show love to your stuffed crab anywhere you go!
Developer Note: Many players love taking their plushie friends around Sky, so we added new ways to play with them! Plushies can now be picked up, hugged, and more. This is our first crack at the plushies and we plan on tinkering with them some more as we see players interact with them. Keep an eye out for more plushie updates in the future!
  • A monument has been added to the Starlight Desert area of Vault of Knowledge in honor of a late beloved coworker, and others to whom we’ve had to say goodbye. “In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so, it will be as if all the stars will be laughing when you look at the sky at night.”

Improvements and Bug Fixes in this update include:

Highlights:

  • Various improvements to reduce players being separate from their friends when meditating to go to the seasonal area of Isle of Dawn or to join the Seasonal Quests.
  • Changes to make it easier for friends to teleport to a player in Festival Tech mode.
  • In Festival Tech mode, a player's own avatar will not be obscured from view by avatars from the crowd.
  • When standing near a player using the Do Not Disturb spell, the spell's icon appears above their head.
  • Updated music sheet rotations in Harmony Hall.

Want to know more about some other fixes in this patch? Find further details below!

Season
  • The Overactive Overachiever's hair no longer has a gap when worn with the chibi mask.
  • Adjusted the alignment of the Tumbling Troublemaker's earrings.
  • Fixed Isle of Dawn Temple music playing instead of seasonal music in that level's seasonal area.
  • Update for timer text visibility in second Seasonal Quest.
  • Adjustments to ultimate mask to reduce clipping with various hairstyles.
General Fixes and Improvements:
  • [PlayStation] Savior achievement reliably granted.
  • [iOS, Android, Huawei] Added the option for players on mobile devices to link their Sky account to a Steam account.
  • Honking is very important, but not so important that it should interrupt Sky kids’ movement. So now, Sky kids no longer stop rolling, skipping, and doing any other traversal emote to stand up straight when they honk.
  • Friends and others should correctly see the stance a player is using, and that stance should no longer reset to default when going between areas or restarting the game.
  • Trial of Water opening cutscene is skippable.
  • Friendship should raise you up, not pull you down, so we fixed the bug causing a player to sink underground if they accepted a friendship request or unlocked a friendship interaction while being carried by piggyback.
  • Similarly, a player leading a friend by handhold won’t sink below the terrain when the person they're holding hands with dives deep underwater.
  • When two Spirits are standing close to each other and a player opens one of their Friendship Trees and then selects the other Spirit, the display correctly switches to the Friendship Tree of the selected Spirit.
  • Player will not leave edit mode if they tap outside of the keyboard when naming a Shared Space.
  • When recording Shared Memories, chatting will pause the recording while the avatar is standing still. Chat is disabled during a recording when swimming, flying, or otherwise moving.
  • Music sheets stop playing when you equip a new prop.
  • Spirits in Harmony Hall now use their instruments properly during a jam session.
  • Removed the mysterious invisible lead boots bug that made players walk underwater in one of the waterfall ponds in Sanctuary.
  • Friendship menu now closes automatically when two friends swim away from each other.
  • Duration of Kizuna AI STAR Pin effect updated from three seconds to 1 minute.
  • Fixed a bug causing avatars that were sitting or lying down to stand up when using an emote.
  • When a group of players is handholding or using piggyback, the players following in the chain will automatically attempt to join the Shared Space the group's leader is in.
  • Even though red notification dots that never ever ever ever go away are surely the most beloved thing that could appear in a menu, we have ultimately decided that the red dot for new inbox messages should not wear out its welcome. Thus, that red dot now disappears after reading the message.
Audio & Appearance
  • Fix to reduce flickering lighting on capes in bright environments.
  • Reduced the sound effects radius of instruments being played by other players.
  • Fixed a bug causing pillars and other objects in front of the first gate in Forest to be unusually dark or oddly lit.
  • Fixed clipping issues with Nature sunglasses and Sanctuary sunglasses masks.
  • Instrument no longer misplaced during the Hairtousle Teen's Spirit memory sequence, better suited to entertain us.
  • When two friends follow each other in the AURORA concert, doing so no longer leads to visual corruptions in cutscenes or transitions.
  • Fixed some missing and discolored polygons here and there, like behind the stage in the Village of Dreams Theater area and the Daylight Prairie Village area.
  • Fixed some gaps and pits that could trap players in Eden, plus some other clipping issues with the terrain.
  • Small fixes for visual effects affecting capes, with small changes such as gold diamonds on the Thoughtful Director's cape appearing metallic, and improvements to the visual recharge effect on the Season of Shattering Ultimate Light Cape.

2023.05.31 21:48 icyigor Nxthemes crashing when extracting home menu

Whenever I try to extract home menu with nxthemes it crashes my atmosphere. I redownloaded the latest nro and it still does. I noticed the nro hasn't been updated on GitHub since 2022 so does that mean nxthemes doesn't work on newer console softwares? I'm on 16.0.3. if it doesn't are there any other apps for themes on this console version? Thanks!

2023.05.31 21:21 Vegetable_Bag3870 I AM DOING SO MUCH BETTER! my story and tips below!

I didn't think I would be writing this today but wow, I guess I am. It does get better guys. Before I go into the tips, I want to start by talking about my ocd history and where I am at now. I've had ocd since I was young. The youngest I can remember was 6 years old, and my first bad bad episode was when I was 9. At 9 years old, I had thoughts on my family being harmed, and while I can't recall how long that episode lasted for, I will say it did torment me. From that point on, ocd was in and out my life. I've had several themes including health ocd, incest, harm, somatic, skin picking, POCD...
2018- I had a severe bout of ROCD, and at that time, that was when I knew something was really wrong with me. I didn't know it was ocd, and I actually thought everyone else' brain worked like mine. LMAO. Anyways, that was when I decided to go seek therapy but was just diagnosed with GAD, NOT OCD. I did get better in a way because I learned how to manage and soothe my anxiety through stress management techniques.
2020- Had the worst theme to date. I started experiencing real event ocd, and wow, unless you've had this theme, you know how bad it can get and how unbearable the guilt can be. That was when I googled my symptoms and came across having ocd and was diagnosed with ocd. Real event was my main theme between 2020-2022. It got so bad. I was suicidal. I didn't wanna die, but I didn't want be in pain anymore. Then it morphed from real event to false memory and it just really fu*** me up there. I ended up inpatient, and was at my worst state ever. As soon as I got out of the hospital I knew I had to get better because I wanted to live. I did everything to get better including doing self-therapy on myself. Sure, it helped to work with a therapist, but most of the work is done outside of therapy. I started learning about how to stop ruminating and changing my beliefs systems. Now This is where I am going to start giving my tips here.
  1. Stop Ruminating- This is the hardest thing ever and it took me over a year learning how to control this. The first thing you need to honestly do is give yourself permission to stop ruminating. Many of you don't do this. You believe you need to revisit the past to figure it out. You believe diving into the past will punish you. You believe you are not worth moving on. Change these belief systems and realize while the past will always be there, you can move on. How do we do this? By not ruminating anymore. This isn't going to be easy to curve, so don't expect to be cured in a week from this. It's going to take A-LOT of brain work. Some days you will do good, other days you will not. But keep going, keep delaying the rumination. Don't beat yourself up if you fail. Slowly the magic will happen and you'll catch yourself getting better at not ruminating. Someone who really helped me with this was Ali Greymond on Youtube. Highly recommend checking her out.
  2. Changing your beliefs system- Here's the second thing that helped me ALOT. Change your beliefs system. This one is also going to take time, but hang in there. You must slowly start believing and understanding that while people commit mistakes, it's OK to move forward from them. No one is entirely good or bad. You must truly strengthen this belief system. Now remember, we are programmed to believe that any human who does a bad act, is bad. That has been instilled in us since we were young, so this is gonna take some time to change. A free resource that helped me learn about this was OCD recovery on Youtube. Now I know a lot of people don't like the fellow, but if you truly listen to the message that some of the fellows are trying to say, it does make sense.
  3. Medication, exercise, stress management (thoughts, etc.)- Now I am not no doctor, but when I was in the hole, my serotonin was not there. I needed to get on meds which I did. I was on Clomipramine. This helped take some of the edge off when I was in the hole. I was on meds for less than a year and now I am off them completely. It's been about 2 months since I have been off them. Now I focus on exercise, yoga, and focusing on my hobbies to help boost my serotonin.

2023.05.31 20:37 pitaenigma Happy Pride Month r/Israel!

Happy pride month Israel!
The subreddit, like many corporations that do nothing throughout the year, is celebrating pride month with a rainbow snoo and a pinned thread! We’re at the forefront of activism!
Like we did last year, here are a list of pride events hosted by cities, universities, and honestly whatever else I’m blatantly stealing from Haaguda Lemaan Halahatab, organized by date. If there is a link missing, it’s because I couldn’t find it (because their website is a nightmare) or because I gave up partway through. Some of these events I’m pretty sure are not Pride events (Lightyear screening? Really?) but I included them because the Aguda people did. Feel free to add links and other events to this post and I will add them whenever I notice.
1.6: M.E. Eshkol (evening pride event), Jerusalem (Pride parade), Yad Hanna (Pride event)
2.6: Kiryat Bialik (Pride weekend), Tel Aviv (Dyke March)
3.6: Shoham (Pride event)
4.6: Hebrew University Ein Kerem (Pride event), Shoham (Queer Author Event)
5.6: College of Management Academic Studies (Pride event), Hebrew University Mount Scopus (Pride event), Ben Gurion University (Pride event), Ein Kerem campus (Pride event)
6.6: Northern District (Academic conference about LGBT resources), Hod Hasharon (Pride march+show, though the website says something else, I have no idea), Yehud Monosson (Queer family event), Shoham (Teen LGBT event), Jordan Valley (LGBT race), Bar Ilan University (Pride event), Sapir college (Pride event)
7.6: Haifa University (Pride event), David Yellin College (3 day long LGBT stands no I do not have any idea what this means)
8.6: Ramat Gan (Tel Hashomer Medical LGBT convention), Kfar Vradim (Pride march), Tel Aviv (Pride march lasting 2 days, one is a party),
10.6: Drom Hasharon (Pride weekend), Jordan Valley (Pride weekend)
11.6: Givatayim (Pride event lasting many days, not listing them all), Ramat Gan (pool party), Oranim College (Pride month themed lecture)
12.6: Golan (Pride event), Yehud Monosson (Board gayme night), Ramat Gan (“Lightyear” screening, I wish I was kidding), Tel Aviv University (Pride event), Nesher (Pride event)
13.6: Raanana (Pride march), Ramat Gan (Safari tour, somehow, idfk)
14.6: Agriculture Faculty (Pride event), West Galilee College (Pride event), Beit Berel (Pride event), Ramat Gan (sick of their shit, done writing about them), Kibbutzim College (Pride event)
15.6: Ramat Hanegev (Pride event), Kiryat Ono (Pride event), Ramat Gan (central pride march), Herzliyah (Pride event), Haifa (Pride march), Rishon Letziyon (Pride March)
16.6: Kiryat Bialik (Pride event), Tel Hai (Pride event)
17.6: Yehud Monosson (Mizrachi pride event)
18.6: Yehud Monosson (family lecture)
20.6: M.E. Gezzer (Sapir Berman lecture), Rosh Haayin (Pride event), Yehud Monosson (lgbt movie screening)
21.6: Tel Hai (Pride party), Ashkelon (Pride event)
22.6: Beersheba (Pride march), Netanya (Pride march), Modiin Makabim Reut (Pride march), Afula (Pride march), Ramat Gan (Women’s party), Harish (Pride event), Ramat Hasharon (Pride event), M.E. Hevel Eilot (Pride event), Hof Hakarmel (Pride event)

25.6: Reichman (Pride event)
26.6: Ashdod (Pride march)
27.6: Givat Shmuel (Pride evening)
29.6: Ramat Yishai (Pride event), Bat Yam (Queer family picnic), Rehovot (Pride march), Bnei Shimon (Pride event), Weizman Institute (Pride event), Tiberias (Probable pride event), M.E. Hevel Eilot (Pride event)
30.6: Mitzpe Ramon (Pride march), Hadera (Pride event), Yoav (Pride event), Givat Shmuel (Pride event)
5.7: Tivon (Pride event)
7.7: Emek Yizrael College (Pride event)
20.7: Yokneam Illit (Pride event)
24.7: Petach Tikva (Drag show)
If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community in need of help, there are multiple organizations that are there and willing to help. A few I know of are Haaguda Lemaan Halahatab (general LGBT aid), The Trans Center (transgender people), The Lionesses (parents of trans kids), Igy (queer youth), Havruta (gay religious men), Bat Kol (religious lesbians). Check your local area for LGBT groups that can help, and if you DM me (about this specifically and nothing else - see rule 9) I will try to help.
Here are a few questions and answers that might pop up (I stole them from my post last year)
Why isn't there a Pride Parade in (insert Arab town)
Pride parades are organized by local volunteers, and are heavily supervised by police. While האגודה למען הלהט"ב and other organizations do help, they work with local activists. This is also why there isn't one in Bnei Brak, or many other cities. This is a troll question meant to distract from other issues.
Why do we need a Pride month?
Pride started as a protest, and is likely to become more of one soon. LGBTQ rights are under attack worldwide, with the movement against it gaining power and influence. This government includes parties that are explicitly homophobic, including one whose sole purpose is the eradication of non-straight people. Anti-LGBTQ talking points are circulating more and more often, many homegrown but some imported from American grifters, with many of those grifters coming here personally to spread them. It is increasingly important to show ourselves and say we will not be erased.
I'm straight, should I come to my local pride events?
Yes. It’s not a day explicitly meant for you, but it’s one where we show we matter, and having people join in is a strong move. Besides, it’s usually just fun.
I don't want to see half-naked dudes making out in public
It's June and beach season, so you're probably seeing that anyway. Still, most Pride events (all of them other than the Tel Aviv one, really, and I don't go to the Tel Aviv one because I'm a reddit mod and allergic to people) are fairly low-key events. People walk with flags and shout slogans, then there's music and merch at the end. Some people do face paint. There's a guy with an anti-circumcision poster who seems to be at every single event, I've never spoken to him but he gets into a lot of fights. Bigger events (Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa) might have a politician or two, but most prefer to just say nice words and not bother making an appearance.
Should I get involved?
YES. There is a huge shortage of volunteers country-wide and these marches cannot happen without them. If you have time, the day of a march, contact your local organizer. If you don't know who they are, look at local FB groups or maybe ask me and I can ask around.

2023.05.31 20:04 fazbearplayer87 [TOMT][PC Videogame Series][2000-2010] Old item search Videogame for PC

recently, remembering games from my youth, i remember my father and i played an item search game saga that we really loved. and now that i remember it, i would love to play it again, sadly, idr none of the name of the games. but i still remember clearly the themes of 2 of them, and i remember it was either a saga or a series of games with the same gameplay:
the first one focused on a psychic from a carnival, she had visions that somebody was trying to murder her, yet she can't find who could be, so she starts to suspect of everyone on the circus, when you found most items in the levels asked, you would then go into a minigame themed with the person you where investigating, and once solved, said person would die in relation to their work. i remember 2 victims: 1 was the strong man, but idr if he dies trying to lift off something or because of something else, and the second one was the son of said psychic, which was the fattest man there, due to being overweight. and another mechanic it had was "changing items"; some levels had an item or detail that would swap between 2 states, if you found all of them you could unlock new levels. the area with an example of it shown the psychic holding a green apple on one hand and an orange on the other, and they were changing between each other.
the second game was more CIA looking, it was on las vegas or similar, and like the previous game, you searched for items, yet idr the story, maybe a murder? idk. but like the previous game, there was also secret items, i think one was poker chips that were hidden in all levels and maybe the card suits?
i know it was a game saga because at the end of each game, in more games, there where a list of multiple games with the same gameplay but different themes, i think one of them was old west

2023.05.31 19:48 ZippymcOswald Ron Stampler appreciation post. Possible [spoilers]

Hey there nerds and weirdos, here's my Beth May is a superhero, dungeons and daddies is the best, and hooooo boy did i realize i have a lot of baggage i need to deal with, appreciation post. Two weeks prior to thanksgiving 2022, an old high school friend of mine jumped into a rented ford MachE mustang, pointed it south and began the long trip to a cabin on Mount Hood, Oregon for a DnD weekend. We were both excited to continue our campaign we started earlier in the year. I’d get to reprise the roll of Snu Snu, half orc Barbarian, who is a dumb but smashy chap. I like my Dnd Characters to have a delusion, like the orc barbarian that was convinced he was a “blood wizard”, or the halfling rogue who was trying to convince everyone he was a brave warrior when in fact he was a coward. It’s fun playing flawed characters in Dnd, i think it sorta breaks the mold of playing heroes on an important quest. I like flawed characters in film, tv, literature, probably because I am a flawed character. Person. I’m a flawed person. I’m real, despite sometimes not wanting to be so some of the time. We started our journey in Seattle Washington, our GPS said it would be a four hour trip at two hundred and fifteen miles, the mache e was advertised to have a range of 110 miles…. I immediately realized I had made a critically failed my intelligence roll. 215 miles was greater than 110 miles. After two hours of bumper to bumper traffic, I needed to charge the car to get to our destination and despite my undeserved confidence, charging an electric car is more difficult and slower than I had expected. You have to find a fast charger, the right fast charger, and download the app associated with it, fill out a bunch of personal info, then start the charging process, which I remind you was referred to as “fast” but in fact takes over an hour. I’d fucked up. Our friends were already at the cabin we had rented, they had their character sheets in one hand, beers in the other and they were just waiting for us. I thought i’d already ruined the trip and we hadn’t made it out of the state. I asked my friend what he’d want to listen to while we sat and waited for the car to gain enough range to make it to our cabin on the edge of the forgotten realms. Ok, i didn’t say that, that was me trying to sound impressive and like i’m a good writer. You get it, or at least i hope you get it. My friend knew that i love podcasts, so he suggested we listen to a DND themed podcast to get in the mood, i asked which one, and he suggested Dungeons and Daddies. He said it was really funny, and he thought i’d like it. So, i found it in my podcatcher, went to season one episode one and started listening. We listened for the entire ride to the cabin, and then back again. I immediately loved the show. There’s something about podcasts, I'm not sure exactly what it is, but to me it feels like I really get to know the hosts/characters on the show. I think podcasts create a false sense of intimacy between the listener and the hosts. I think it’s because I mainly listen to podcasts alone and and it feels like the hosts/characters are talking to me. Or that I'm a fly on the wall of a really fun place, and I get to quietly observe these hilarious people. Is it because I listen in headphones or in my car? Maybe. Anyway, I know I get a false sense of intimacy, but sometimes I like to pretend it isn’t, or maybe I forget that it isn’t. I’m not sure, but these people don’t know me, and I don't know them, not really. So, after our weekend of DND, we drove back to Seattle, and by the time I was back at my house, I was ten episodes into Dungeons and Daddies. Over the last three weeks It had become my new audio obsession. I was hooked and I listened to it in the gym, on dog walks, while I cooked for my family, while I drove, every moment of silence I had was filled with the dads in the forgotten realm. I LOVE this show like I imagine many of you do because it’s funny, smart and dumb at the same time, it has great improvisation, an interesting story, fun characters who are out of place, and is honestly very touching and more emotionally impactful than I'd ever have imagined. As I got further down the season one rabbit hole, I began finding myself gravitating to Ron Stampler as my favorite daddy storyline. Beth’s performance is just fantastic, and even before episode 61,, where Ron has to give his dog away, Ron’s story and Beth’s performance was bringing me to tears.
I’m a dad, I have a son who is eight. In my life, there are only two Dads in my immediate family, see my wife’s father passed away when she was eight, there’s me and my dad. Well.. oh boy. My dad is kinda a nightmare. Not like Willy is a nightmare, my Dad is more like a crumpled and faded poster of a black and white monster movie, it’s sometimes more sad than scary. My dad was gone a lot when I was a kid. He was on business trips for pretty much eighty percent of my childhood. At one point he was American airlines third most flown person in the world, no joke. He’d fly to Germany on Monday, Japan on Wednesday, and then back to Oregon on friday. The good thing was we were able to fly back to my parents home country in the summer and at christmas, and the whole family usually flew for free because of his frequent flier miles. Those trips were GREAT times, I’d see my cool cousins, we’d eat awesome candy, visit castles, see the sleeping giants and all other manner of family fun. But, in normal life, I'd see him Friday night where he’d crash out, then when he woke up on Saturday he’d be grumpy, groggy and easy to anger. Those were the really good times I remember with my Dad when I was growing up, but I also remember him being angry, depressed, mean and sometimes he’d hurt me. I’m not saying that he hit me or my brother or mom on a regular occasion, that he was a drunk or anything, but there were times where he’d take things too far and I'd get hurt. For example, i must have been ten or eleven when my Dad, Brother and I went to a christian rock festival. We had to kill some time in the parking lot before the doors opened to rock n roll jesus. So my dad had the idea to teach us the spoons game. It’s like the game where you put your hands out palm up, and the other player places their hands on your hands palm down. You try to slap the other player’s hands while they try to evade your slaps. Got it? There’s gotta be a name for that game, slappies or something…
Well, for some reason we had some cutlery in the back of the car, maybe we had a picnic before the show, i don’t remember why, but we had shiny metal spoons for some reason. He taught us “the spoon game” by instructing me to make fists, and put them out in front of myself. He held spoons, one in each hand, and placed the bottom of the spoon on the top of my knuckles. My goal was to move my hands out of the way of the spoons as he tried to hit my knuckles with them. We played for what seemed like 15 minutes and he hit me every-time and with each successful hit he grew happier, and laughed harder. At first it stung, then it ached, then it was like this bubbling cauldron of pain and frustration was exploding inside me. When I could hardly hold my hands still because I was so angry, hurt and embarrassed, I burst into tears when my hands were red and beginning to bruise. I ran away from him, I just took off up the improvised road in the parking lot. He came after me, apologized to me and gave me a hug. We never played that game again. That’s just the kind of guy he was, and as I got older I realized some of the myriad of reasons he was that way. Firstly, he was an orphan, he and his brother were dropped off at an orphanage when he was three and his brother was five. I can only assume catholic orphanages in the 1950’s were not a great place to have some of your first memories. Although he’s never talked about it to me, I’m sure they’ve affected him. About a year later he and his brother were adopted by my grandparents, who in their 40’s decided to adopt two brothers aged four and six. I adored my grandparents, they were amazing people. They were blue-collar folks, my grandfather was a coal miner, with amazing stories and two sheds full of treasures which my grandmother called junk my brother and I got to paw through. Sure, he picked it up off the side of the road, but they were treasures, not junk in my or my brothers eyes. My grandfather walked from Wales to Scotland with his brother when he was nine years old to get work in the coal mines of Scotland. His sister, she was a boat captain and smuggler during the Spanish civil war who ran guns, food and medical supplies to the anti fascists. My Grandmother learned sign language so she could communicate and help THE deaf family in the village when the mother of that family fell gravely ill. But, it was the 1950’s and 1960’s so no matter how great their lives stories were, hitting kids was super normal, or at least that’s what my father and mother experienced. I’m sure he had a lot of trauma he never dealt with when he became a father in his late twenties. When we were kids, he was the sole breadwinner, his job was probably really taxing and took a lot out of him, he was away from his family a lot, and you know, traveling for work and living in hotels sucks. That’s not to excuse his behavior, I just try to, you know, put him in context of the stress he was under that I was too young to know about. It’s easier for me to believe that he’s not inherently bad, but shaped by his environment, it’s just easier for me that way. Judge away. It’s complicated. When I was twelve he lost his job, his brother committed suicide, and his funeral he found out he had 4 half sisters in Scotland who his brother had known about, and not told him about for almost a decade. It was a bad year with a silver lining. I watched him retreat into depression, longing, and joy of finding his new sisters. When i got out of college, he had his fourth back surgery. He had ruptured another disc in his lower back, and required another Discectomy . However, during the healing process he got an infection, one that raised his fever to a dangerous level that resulted in brain damage. From that point on, he wasn’t mean. He wasn’t cruel. He was confused, stubborn, repetitive, annoying and a shadow of his former intellectual self. So, I pity my father. Over this thanksgiving he decided to drive us back to my house from our extended families thanksgiving celebration. He drove into oncoming traffic because we had told him to take the next left, which he interpreted as take a left right now. No one was hurt. My son was in the car and was very scared.
And all I could think about was Ron Stampler. Listening to the end of season one gave me a lot of feelings. Listening to how Willy treated Ron wasn’t like my life with my father, not beat for beat, but a lot of the emotional beats seemed similar. Suddenly my father being absent for most of my early childhood was similar to the emotional abandonment Willy treated Ron. I saw how Willy was dismissive and cruel to Ron, and it brought back a bunch of memories I hadn’t contextualized. The spoons game for example, I had just blocked that off, not thought about it for decades, and when Willy was being so cruel to Ron, it just reminded me of that afternoon in a parking lot outside of a Jesus festival. So, my dad never made me give my dog away, but he did lose my dog once. Like, his story is that he took him to the groomer and the dog just bolted and we never saw Mocha again. Holy shit. I… I just remembered that. I want to break the cycle. I don’t want to pass on the bullshit my Dad did to me, I don’t want my the way I feel less than, incomplete, wrong and not god damn good enough onto my sweet boy. He doesn’t deserve any of that, I mean no kid does, but I’m NOT going to do that to him. I struggle with being a father a lot. I’m always second guessing myself, always worried that i’ll slip into a casual cruelty that will forever leave deep emotional scars in my sweet son the way my dad did to me. My son is an emotional kid, like I was. My son has the biggest heart you’ll ever see in a child his age. He loves everyone he meets, treats them as dear friends, and is always the first to lend a hand, a shoulder to cry on, a hug, or the shirt off his back. For christ's sake, this halloween he gave a bunch of his candy to his friends brother on the night of halloween. The younger brother was too tired to do the second round of trick or treating, it was past his bedtime. We were having a little party for halloween because we go crazy for halloween. Decorations, lights, family costume themes, full sized cady bars for trick or treaters, the whole nine yards. My son’s friends parents were attending the party, So I took my son and his friend on 2nd round of trick or treating. It was awesome, we were the last group of trick or treaters to be seen and our neighborhood was just dumping candy into the kids bags. DUMPING. When we got home, with our heavy haul the brother was upset that he didn’t go back out and get candy, so my kid just gave him all he wanted. If you’re not a parent of a young kid, let me be clear- candy is the hard drugs of childhood. Kids can be junkies for that sweet sweet candy.
That’s the kind of selfless eight year old I have, just handing over his own kiddy crack to someone he cares about without a second thought. Just today I realized he put a board game on his list to Santa, because it’s my wife’s favorite board game. He wants HER to have it, so he’s asking the all mighty and powerful Santa to bring something for him, so he can make his mom happy. What a kid. Listening to the Dungeons and Daddies made me think a lot about my dad, my baggage, what Dad I wanted to be. I have committed myself to not passing on generational trauma to my sweet, sweet boy. Listening to Beth May craft such a beautiful arch for Ron opened up a pandora's box of emotion including hope, anger, sadness and love. Ron was able to take the first steps of breaking the cycle of abuse that Willy passed on to him, and I’m ready to do the same. I hope to be as smart, brave, insightful and cool as Ron frickin’ Stampler. Thank you Daddies, thank you Anthony, Thank you Beth. I did not expect that this horny and violent podcast would be so therapeutic and eye opening to me.

2023.05.31 19:36 gay_biscuit The Youth Project - scam charity?

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone else had any insight into this slightly weird situation.
I was approached by a charity mugger on Princes Street yesterday claiming to be from The Youth Project, a charity that aims to combat knife crime. I told him I don't give any money without researching first and after a little pushback, I got him to give me the name of their website. The guy didn't seem to know exactly what it was which was a bit suspicious from the get go, another strange point was that they were only asking for one off card tap donations.
After trying to find their website I discovered the domain name I was given was defunct, and I couldn't find any other similar charity under that name. I would have assumed that these were therefore just scammers, but I went to the companies register and found that there was indeed a CIC registered under that name in August 2022. This is where it gets a bit weird, The Youth Project doesn't seem to exist anywhere else but the person registered as director is also registered as the director of another company - WeExcel360 which does have website and appears (on its face) to be legitimate.
However, an application to strike WeExcel360 from the register was submitted in May 2023. This feels odd, and I'm not sure why they would incorporate a new CIC instead of just changing the name if that was their only goal.
Has anyone dealt with The Youth Project before?
(yes, I have too much time on my hands)

Welcome back to Reviewless Review Recs of May!
A short introduction to this post: Every book is recommended, regardless of how bad it is or not. You have the brain capacity to decide if you like it or not, don’t let a stranger make a decision for you.
I speak in the second POV and describe what the book is actually about, and not the false advertising of publishing companies. I do this with shitty jokes and satire and try to convince you to pick up the book, regardless of how I feel about it.
Unlike Hoover, all books deserve a chance….Sigh, OK, fine, fine, Barbara. Even….Even...Eleventh Cycle.
ARE YOU HAPPY, NOW, B-

May:
May was filled with disappointment that a jury vote existed and the king of Finland didn’t win Eurovision. The world unanimously cried, but couldn’t be that mad that Loreen won.
Except this bitch.
I fucking wanted Alika to win so badly. I even voted and paid for the first time to give all my votes to her. Her song spoke to me and touched me that it’s never too late to go back to my work.
If Bomanz from Black Company can become a famous sorcerer at his rickety age, maybe we can too!
My favorites of Eurovision (from music videos only, I feel like every one of my favs bombed someway except Finland, France, and Norway):
Estonia
France
Austria
Czechia (wtf was that live performance...)
Finland

In ACTUAL book news, I’ve been waiting patiently for the library to hand me the newest Mark Lawrence book that I’ve been waiting literally 3 and a half weeks now, but I still get bumped down on Libby...for some reason. Eh.
Also since I managed to finish “She Who Rides the Storm”, I finally started “Elantris”. Was a long time coming but was saving it for a while and thought it was finally time to tackle Sanderson. I started Way of Kings with the paperback version and boy, that was a mistake for my ADHD…
And, that’s why I got a Kindle last year.
Anywho, let’s get started!

Reviewless Review Recs: \*

Seven Faceless Saints by M.K. Lobb: Read if you're in the ages 14-18, as this is possibly the most edgiest thing you might read about fictional Italy. Two teens are trying to solve a murder mystery in an alternate universe where Catholicism reigns supreme. Wait.
As an adult, this is a living personification of that one prozd video.
If you ever played Phoenix Wright, you’ll figure out the murderer in 5 seconds. If you haven’t, then maybe this would come as a surprise.
Atheism is talked about on the nose, you can't stop thinking about “Friends” because of "Roz" being mentioned every other second, and our intrepid MC goes to horny jail every other second when she's literally fighting for her life and not focusing on a gun that could disembowel her.
PTSD of war is represented by the male MC who probably once could have been the trope of the “nice guy” in school that you never had interest in, but 3 years later, because he sported 5 o’ clock shadow and has a baritone voice, he’s automatically hot.
Oh, and there are token bi, POC, and elderly people, but they’re only mentioned for a few pages, so don’t expect that much diversity. You think Archer, Maas, and Lobb could actually be friends with each other given how they write their books. A secret society. cough

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman :
Read if Percy Jackson wasn’t edgy and dark enough for you and need something similar. Uniorinically, this is actually not satire but an actual (sorta) rec. Structure is similar to Jackson but with none of the jovial themes and tropes. Think “Lightning Thief”, only dark and edgy with grotesque monsters and, not urbanite Greek deities, but evil people from the Crusades era.
You keep thinking you’ll meet the 4th character in the Sanderson reunion tour, but there’s actually only 3 characters that are on this journey, not 4. So that Italian will actually not join us even though you liked his character a ton and curse at yourself at a potential LGBT partner dude. One day.
You will also find yourself crying, not because of how the story ended, but how the epilogue ended and boot up AO3 to fix everything.
You probably should(n’t) give this book to your aunt for reasons you know in the back of your mind but your evil AF. Maybe offer this to at Christmas and explain that it’s a book about a pilgrimage...(which isn’t totally wrong) but you’re a little bastard that is gonna get an ass whopping next Christmas, but it’ll be worth it.

Time of Contempt (Volume (???)) by Andrzej Sapkowski (Witcher)
Read if you want to see Geralt turn into a woke ally Boomer, Yennefer going to relationship counseling, and Ciri gets her wish in more ways than one. If you’re comparing Witcher books with each other, quality has gone up since Blood of Elves if that’s what you’re concerned about. We also see the Abyss Watchers making an appearance and then you think of Jerma’s Rat song in your head for inexplicable reasons.
This book is mostly about Yennefer trying to employ questionable (albeit understandable) parenting tactics on Ciri and being caught up in the after math.
As usual, book is dated towards rape, but the only saving grace is it’s “off screen” and not in your face, “Eleventh Cycle”, knock that shit off
Let’s be real, you can’t treat this series as a separate unique book to it’s own, it’s more of a long ass story that Sapkowski decided for marketing reasons to space it out in 300+ page books.
If you ask me what makes this more interesting than the previous books, it will be like asking me which regional orange looks different and bitch, I don’t got energy for that shit.
Ö Theme: Rats Birthday Mixtape

The Curse of the Spectre Queen / The Rise of the Snake Goddess by Jenny Moke
Read if you like to imagine Indiana Jones as a teenage girl, but loves books. Instead of meeting hot girls, we meet hot 1920s men, which you get to decide how good or bad that is.
The BAMF slays and you wish we had her as our Jones instead of our shy book loving MC, but hey, at least this MC has at least one quality to her that has way more personality that anything Shannon can hope to write in her stories. (Yes I know she writes her books as if they were history books, that’s not the point, Meredith)
Spectre Queen’s plot is literally about another book that will make you hug trees and will lead our characters across to Ireland. The next book is about a girdle, that you literally had to Google wtf a girdle was. You first thought it was a grill.
You wonder if the publishing agency struck a deal with the Irish and Crete travel agencies.
You also make a startling discovery that these characters are your OC from high school and middle school and your love interest OC from college mashed up into an adventure book that is oddly less erotic than anything Maas could create. You get to decide how good or bad that is.

Mordew by Alex Pheby
Read if you want to read an MC bland as hard tack inherit powers that don’t make sense till past the 70% mark. You want to read a dark YOUTH ADULT novel. Can’t find anything that’s edgy and dark enough for you? Well, here it is!
Dark mansion with Igor from the Velvet Room with an obvious villain being obvious, befriending a young boy that supposedly wants the best for him.
What can go wrong?
There are Souls-like elements weaved in, but you’re not going to see much of it. It’s mostly a vibe/fart than a plot or atmosphere.
What this book is pretty much: boy wants to help dad, there are weird monsters living in the mud, and a mansion that totally wants to abduct/help kids. Totally. Oh, and be aware, animals die in this book. A lot. An entire species is pretty much annihilated for teenage hormonal reasons that won’t make sense even if you’re still a teen. (Yes, I was one too and I also didn’t go on genocides. Thanks, Dad, you are a gem.). Oh, and someone fucked an anthropomorphized hedgehog along the way. Yeah. That happened.
If you go into this book, DO NOT READ THE BLURB! It ruins the whole plot of the entire book. If you buy/rent it, don’t you dare flip to the back side. Just open to the first chapter and start reading. You’re welcome, Matt.
Ö Theme: La Zarra – Evidemment Unironically, I think this song fits rather well with Mordew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWfbEFH9NvQ

She Who Rides the Storm by Catelin Sangster
Read if you like Sanderson and wished he focused more on the characters rather than the world building. You also like the ooey gooey feeling of finding a red/blue ship that you wished was the main pairing, but you’ll have to settle them being the side ship. Oh god, why, every single time?!
While it does have a romance tilt to it, this book focuses more on finding a cure for a mysterious illness and two of the characters are refugees from a religious cult that loves sunshine and that one weird horse mount from the Empire Strikes Back that you couldn’t take the auroshees seriously because of that.
Imagine that desert bar scene in A New Hope, but make it a whole book. But make it about a heist as a side plot that is barely touched on until the last 20% of the novel.
You also love doing puzzles in your spare time as you’ll be doing a lot of piecing together of the plot and world building from chapter to chapter. Unlike my problems, this one is pieceable and the last remaining piece is dangled over your head until the next book.
...Sangster is probably going to make you pay $20 for this singular piece, ain’t she?

Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain
Read if you want to have a blunt conversation with Bourdain about food, the faults of the kitchens, what not to do if you want to be a chef, and to be transported to the deepest, darkest alley where you might be knifed, but goddamn, the best chicken heart can be found here.
If you’re a bitch that’s easily spooked by curse words, then this probably isn’t for you. Though...you can sneak this to your cook boyfriend if you want to break up, because he already read the fucking book, Berta, I thought you knew him better by now!...Now you can finally segway to break up. Congratulations!
You’ll see the workings of a mind that was suffering. That was the reflection of this entire autobiography. Suffering and food. That’s life in reality, ain’t it?
Don’t expect cohesion or a semblance of logical flow of pacing. This book, like Mr. Bourdain’s mind, was a cluster fuck of erotically describing food, the dark corners and reality of the cooking world, and shitting on people because they were dicks.
He is sorely missed, and this isn’t a bit, but I still mourn his loss to the world. The world needs him again.
RIP to the GOAT.

Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
Read if you got tired of everything happy and sunshine in Percy Jackson and wanted blood, death, knives, SKELETONS, AND 12 year olds that are surprisingly self aware of the fact that they’re a teenager. You want less consumerism and capitalism than what Percy Jackson pushed down your throat. Finally, no mentions of those fucking gold arches, Riordan.
Oddly, no parents are dead in this book. In every YA book you read, there is at least one parent dead, gone to get milk, or playing Tears of the Kingdom. Pleasant surprise for this narrator.
You are also a person that hates world building that lastS for pages and pages. There’s none of that in this book. Expect pages of dialogue like it’s a transcript of my parent’s arguments.
Mom, I don’t agree with you. No, I don’t agree with you either, Dad. You fucking little….Just plant the damn fig tree, for fuck’s sake.
From other sources, apparently the book series gets darker as books go on, so take that as you will. Listening to Eminem and Linken Park between books may increase levels of angst in the subsequent books.
Side effects include: angst, a potentially bi-found family that lasts 10 seconds, fear of skeletons, mourning for fictional characters, and teenagers being oddly logical.
Post script: This would actually make an excellent autumnal book cause of spoopy skeletons.
Ö Theme: Lose Yourself – Eminem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YuAzR2XVAM (I was yesterday old when I realized “Mom’s spaghetti” lyrics was this song)
Ö Runner up clip: Spooky scary skeletons

The White Rose (Volume 3 of the Black Company) by Glen Cook
Read if you liked having Charm flashbacks of Volume 1, but want a great dopamine rush in Volume 3.
Night Circus got nothing on this book for reasons you’ll figure out later. Expect a lot of weird crack shenanigans such as talking rocks just to name an example. The Lady’s character is fleshed out a lot more than previous volumes. Twists and turns are aplenty and Croacker complaining he’s too old like an old grandpa shopping 10 AM at a Walmart.
Funny enough, Morgenstern is a lot related to this book in more ways than one. Move over, lady, Cook was the original writer of Night Circus, caramel popcorn and candy apples be damned! We’re eating crusty bread and thickened stew, bitch!
You’re not going to be at the edge of your seat until the last percentage of the book, but it’s worth the dopamine rush and emotions that are given in the end, long after you put the book down. You will find yourself wandering around the library wondering how you returned from a reality of flying manta rays and talking rocks...to old ass Swedes loitering in the lobby, discussing where to fika next.
You’ll need a lot of Monsters to process your emotions tonight.
You also finally figure out where Miyazaki got the inspiration for the Storm King in Demon Souls. All this time, you got mad at Miyazaki for inserting a giant manta ray for disappointing climax reasons. No. He may have understood Black Company more than we thought.
Coleydoesthings is also screaming at the top of her lungs by the end of the book, crying into her body pillow.
Ö Theme: MSR – Lord of the Wolves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izFwwGx-wmo (Someone help me on the EX Stages omfg)

I’ll be traveling soon, so the books might be on the short side, but my dumbass quality will remain. Just sprinkled with a lot of curry, chapati, and a big helping of obesity.
God, my thighs can’t take anymore of America.
I think I’ll have fun reading Elantris cause it’s literally a love letter to Soulsbourne and I might learn a bit from it! Can’t wait for it!
I know it’s not book related too much, but what were y’alls favorite in Eurovision?
(Did anyone feel like Armenia just spent money to send that girl an expensive Tinder profile?)

2023.05.31 18:22 Concrete_halls The brain doesn't finish development at the age of 25.

Hello, I just stumbled upon yesterday's post about the legal age of use if psychedelics are to become legal someday. I noticed the majority of comments target the age of 25 for some reason, which would probably be a myth that the brain develops until the age of 25. Here is an article explaining it in more depth for those interested; it's about 10 minutes long read.
https://slate.com/technology/2022/11/brain-development-25-year-old-mature-myth.html
TL:DR, last paragraph from the article
Perhaps the whole enterprise needs a reframe. It’s unrealistic to expect people to appreciate all the nuances of neuroscience, and naive to believe that scientific evidence won’t be weaponized for political purposes. It feels inevitable that people will gravitate toward a neat, simple story that feels intuitively true: We’re adults at 25. But rather than using that factoid to defend bad decisions, why not use its lessons to reframe youth as an opportunity? As the brain develops in adolescence and early adulthood, it stays open to change; that’s what allows us to learn. “Children and adolescents are not broken adults, but rather, they’re functioning perfectly well for their developmental period,” Mills said. They’re exactly where they need to be; the extra malleability in youth prepares us to figure out our surroundings. “This is the time we’re learning about our identity, other people, how we fit into the world—we need the brain to be malleable,” she said. And while adolescence is typically a time of big changes, reaching adulthood doesn’t mean the end of that growth. You can make good or bad decisions at any age; you’ll mature and regress throughout your life. You, like your brain, are endlessly complex, and we’re so much more than brain scans will ever reveal.
