In the 1990s I was a college student studying Botany. A local botanical garden sponsored a plant sale every year, which brought in dozens of vendors of rare and native plants and probably upwards of a thousand plant fanatics. People would drop thousands of dollars on plants at this sale.
The botanic garden had a volunteer policy that was basically “work for two hours helping at the sale and you get in a half hour before the general public.” I seldom bought anything, but I knew and chatted with several of the vendors, and it was nice to peruse without the insane crush of people.
The mostly elderly volunteers did various tasks like man the cash registers and information booth, and the younger ones like me would set up tables or help people carry out their purchases.
One year I discovered that I was really fast at assembling boxes. The botanic garden had boxes printed just for the sale, they were basically cardboard flats for carrying plants. At some point I started coming two hours early just to put together boxes. I would do 20 while others were struggling to make one. By the end of two hours, I would have a huge stack of boxes that would last through most of the sale.
The last year I volunteered, there was a new person in charge of the volunteers. When I showed up and started putting together boxes, she came up to me and said “what are you doing?”
“I’m putting together boxes.”
“You’re not on the list.”
“There’s a list? I’m just a volunteer.”
“Volunteers are required to work 8 hours in the garden every year, and I’ve never seen you before.”
This was news to me, having been doing the same thing for several years with no issues. Seemed suspicious considering most of the volunteers were in their 70s or 80s.
I had encountered this type of person before, so I knew better than to try to debate policy.
“Well, okay,” I said, dropping the box I was putting together and walking to the back of the line of people waiting to get in. I had only been there long enough to put about a dozen boxes together. The stacks of unassembled boxes sat there and no one came to put them together. After the tiny stack of boxes was gone, people had to put together their own boxes and they were pissed. The line went really slow as every person had to stop and make their own box. A minor inconvenience multiplied by a thousand people becomes a real problem.
I’m just sorry that the public had to bear the brunt of it.

I am honestly frustrated writing this. So we offered her a flat of $280. We were going to be gone from May 26th-June 3rd. Later she gave me dates of 28th-3rd she would be there. Then, after we had left and the packet was made, she changed it and came 29th. Then she left early on 2nd. In the packet, I had her sign, I was extremely specific. My cat is super easy due to automatic everything. She just had to look at the litter light, if there was an issue, to follow the printed guide in packet and next to litter box taped on the wall for convenience due to being upstairs. Did not have to worry aboht giving her food unless she gave her "dinner" under the optional section. And fill her water fountain as described. The only other thing was to go upstairs 2-3 times a day at different times to see if she regurgitated due to carpet upstairs. When i returned out of the 8 halves left for "dinner" there was 1. So in not even 4 days she used 7 when it explicitly says to give her 1 between 5:30-7 or 8:30pm. Her water fountain was my biggest concern. I was super specific, included photos, water bottles next to it, everything. I even sharpied it for the fill line to make it easier to see. When I checked there was condensation and not filled to the line which the camera showed she did not fill it as described which was every other day. I could look away. But literally in the leaving procedure section and in text i explicitly say to fill it as described and she didnt. Her fountain is finicky and if it gets too low it like bubbles/foams due to too much air and needs cleaned, new filter, and more when that happens. She was my roommate last year in the dorm and shes nice but im extremely frustrated. So would i be unreasonable to lower it like $20? I think $280 is a lot for 3.5 days granted her only responsibilities were listed but that was the offer bc we were desperate and we honor our word, which is why i feel weird about reducing it some.
Edit: we also paid for the small list of food she asked for and left $100 cash for food that she could keep regardless. So say she never touched it then she could net $380
Edit 2: My cat liked her and was familiar and that is what mattered most, hence why we wanted to offer something enticing. Otherwise my cat would get even more stressed by a stranger.

I run a multi site central production unit in which we cater for events and corporate hospitalily. We naturally have a legal framework of due diligence behind this operation that protects both customer from getting hurt and staff from being prosecuted should someone get hurt.
This business was falling when I took over and over the course of the last few months I've turned it around by making structureal changes and properly tracking where the money goes.
Today I have my yearly audit at one of the remotely managed sites and went in to check up on how they are feeling about it. The site is shared with another user (same company) and has many visitors from the company go through. I'm usually in once a week sometimes twice.
I looked around and noticed the shelf where the records are kept had been moved and all of the records were gone.. I asked the team and both members claimed they can confirm seing them a couple weeks ago but don't remember seeing them since. Everything else that was on the shelf previously had moved with the shelf which was moved over the weekend, whilst the site was in use by another team within the company for a weekend event.
When they realised the gravity of the situation all three of us searched for 2 hours but they are gone.
I had to re make review and adopt everything again so it looks like my paper work was started yesterday this took me 9 hours and I had to do my normal days work on top of this.
I have informed the head of health and safety for the company and she asked if I had pissed anyone off which has me thinking..
How should I proceed with this is a way that isn't a flat out accusation (as I have no idea who has done this) but will protect me

Sometimes I feel like the most self accepting thing to do is accept that you are you and they are them.
So what you don’t respect me. I respect me and that’s worth more than your words will ever mean.
So what you don’t see a man when you look at me. People deal with mental illness everyday and we mis identify them as being okay because…………they look okay. So it’s alright if you didn’t catch my good side😂
If I told you to call a cat a dog and you were use to calling a a cat a cat you would fuck up some times too. So why do some people make it personal when they know that’s not the intent of the person.I think people who know me before I announced the real me to the world deserve a past because truth is there is something that human on this earth is not able to change. As long as they are respectful and greet me with a smile and treat me like I want to be treated. I don’t give a shit what you call me. PEOPLE WHO I MEET NOW WOULDNT KNOW WHAT MY BIRTH NAME WAS IF YOU ASKED.
Literally my mom came up to my school asking for me and nobody knew who the hell she was talking about😉🤣🤣(yes she knows my name but refuses to call me by it) if that wasn’t the slap in the face of the universe 😂😂😂
Why do we appropriate men with nice chest?
It’s like the ultimate goal of most ftm chest surgery outcomes. And if they don’t get those results many claim to have body dysphoria. Big men exist and they pull just as many females or males as smaller men. They are likely to have a more lowered chest. So why is the goal a completely flat chest. I would like to see more bigger people opting for a more realistic chest size.
I guess what I’m saying is just work on accepting you take others opinions of how you should look to be called trans and how a man should look and be your trans 🏳️⚧️ self. I really just want to see the amount of us taking our life decrease and I’ve really been thinking about this and why.
But maybe society will never accept us. But also maybe we can just never give af about them in the first place. I feel like take what you want the hormones the right to pronoun. You can still never take the man I see when I look at me in the mirror or the way I carry myself in public. Or the amount of chicks I’m pulling without my chest surgery and without that thang hanging in between my thoughts ( definitely gonna wear it though)

Hey guys, looking for some advice from some fellow riders, as im a new(ish) to MTB. First, a little about me and my wants. First and foremost, I want freedom to explore trails, do some single trails and work up to some jumps. I wanted a EMTB just for range/ exploration options. Im carrying a bit of extra weight and not the fittest - I have spent a lot of my time on my ass in front of a screen working around the clock for too many years - time for a lifestyle change. Im new to MTB although used to ride when I was a kid a bit/ bmx. I used to race motocross/ enduro a lot and do my own maintainance, and plan on doing a fair chunk of my own maintainance.
I picked up a CUBE Reaction Pro hard tail eMTB, and its great, but I have some growing concerns. I am yet to take it on a serious offroad trip, but have already noticed a few things im not sure about. 1. It is huge. it has 29 inch wheels, and at my height, im borderline too small for it, ie, feet can only be flat on one side when sitting on cross bar. I definitely need to get a dropper post regardless. Also, its nearly impossible for me to get the front wheel up at any decent speed, I have to be walkping pace to be able to pop up the front. im guessing this is because of the 29 tires and the long wheelbase? Its super stable ride, but doesnt have that 2). The front forks, X-Fusion, seem a bit off to me. They feel way too soft (bottoming out on small drop offs, or turning up by 1 click, then want to snap your wrists off). I didnt know if I should just invest in better forks? 3) The brakes are good, but i feel they could be better (2 piston I think) If I grab a handfull of front brake, im struggling to lock the front wheel on concrete, or do a stoppie. It stops quick, but feels almost like ABS - and im smashing the lever. It might be from my MX days, but I feel I should have a great feel over the front brake with 1/2 fingers? Would 4 piston be the way to go. 4) I always felt I was going to go hard tail for a while before making the jump to full suspension - but im already itching to send it down rough tracks/ jumps, and I know its not going to be the same experience as a full suspension setup.
I spent roughly $3.5k AUD on this bike. I can take it back to the bike shop within 30 days and swap it out (pay the difference) as there is no damage to the bike. I have until the 23rd of this month to do so.
So my question is: Should I swap this bike and put more money into getting a FS bike, with better forks and better brakes? I dont really want to go much higher than $5kAUD as im just starting out, there are a few options in my price range. I do intend to ride some days throughout the week and most weekeneds. Im not competing, but I still want to have fun and not feel huge restrictions on the trails.
OR - I quite like the bike I have minus the few shortcomings - should maybe just invest in better forks, a dropper seat, maybe swap the wheels to 27.5inch and make the most of it - just get out and ride - and upgrade in future if I feel the need? Or should I spend more and go full suspension while I can do a free swap but just pay the difference?

Well, from those interacting me, you know that I'm a relatively staunch constitutional monarchist (with some patcon(?) leanings), a minority on this sub to say the least. I'm not gonna ignite that debate today. But the debate and differences DID give me interest on other hypothetical models of governance, seeing as this sub seems to have become more democratic (some might say, populist) over technocratic or meritocratic ideals in recent years. What are YOUR favourite alternate forms of governance?
Here's 2 of mine that gave me reason to think about democracy, one based on education and another on public service. Feel free to tear them apart as well, as these might be considered ontologically illiberal.

"The Curious Republic of Gondour" by Mark Twain presents a unique governmental structure. Initially, the nation tried universal suffrage, but it was discarded due to unsatisfactory results, as it seemed to deliver all power into the hands of the ignorant and non-tax-paying classes. The solution was not to limit suffrage but to expand it. The constitution gave every man a vote, which was a vested right and could not be taken away. However, it did not specify that certain individuals might not be given two votes, or ten.
An amendment was inserted that authorized the enlargement of suffrage in certain cases specified by statute. This led to a new law under which every citizen, regardless of their wealth or education, possessed one vote. However, a good common-school education gave a man two votes, a high-school education gave him four, and a university education entitled a man to nine votes. Property also played a role in the number of votes a person could have. For every fifty thousand 'sacos' a man added to his property, he was entitled to another vote.
This system created a sort of emulation, where a man was honored according to the number of votes he possessed. Votes based on capital were called "mortal" votes because they could be lost, while those based on learning were called "immortal" because they were permanent. This system almost eliminated gambling and speculation in the republic, as a man with great voting power could not afford to risk losing it.

We all know that Heinlein's Terran Federation of Starship Troopers is a shorthand for, if not directly fascism, it's inbred brother, nationalistic militarism. But let's discuss it anyway, which I found is rather close to the Pre-Caracalla Roman concepts of citizenship. It might be some personal spin, but I refer to it as a "qualified democracy" rather than a limited one.
In the Federation of Heinlein, there is a difference between the civilian (who I'll refer to as a national) and the citizen. However, a national is still able to participate in society, if not in governance - case in point, Juan Rico's family had a history of decades without Federal Service, but still ran a business. For national to be franchised into a citizen, they must participate in two years of Federal Service of their own free will.
In Heinlein's idea, when he rebutted the idea that when only veterans of military service have franchise in his hypothetical Federation: “Veteran” does not mean in English dictionaries or in this novel solely a person who has served in military forces. I concede that in commonest usage today it means a war veteran…but no one hesitates to speak of a veteran fireman or a veteran school teacher. In STARSHIP TROOPERS it is stated flatly and more than once that nineteen out of twenty veterans are not military veterans. Instead, 95% of voters are what we call today “former members of federal civil service.”

"The Curious Republic of Gondour" by Mark Twain presents a unique governmental structure. Initially, the nation tried universal suffrage, but it was discarded due to unsatisfactory results, as it seemed to deliver all power into the hands of the ignorant and non-tax-paying classes. The solution was not to limit suffrage but to expand it. The constitution gave every man a vote, which was a vested right and could not be taken away. However, it did not specify that certain individuals might not be given two votes, or ten.
An amendment was inserted that authorized the enlargement of suffrage in certain cases specified by statute. This led to a new law under which every citizen, regardless of their wealth or education, possessed one vote. However, a good common-school education gave a man two votes, a high-school education gave him four, and a university education entitled a man to nine votes. Property also played a role in the number of votes a person could have. For every fifty thousand 'sacos' a man added to his property, he was entitled to another vote.
This system created a sort of emulation, where a man was honored according to the number of votes he possessed. I've been working on a specific project that I think with enough time and effort can prosper into a solid well cited publication in a high impact journal. My lab are part of an research interest network within a large R1 institute with members of several labs taking turns presenting their individual projects on a monthly basis.
Since this is a network of labs working on similar research interests, I initially thought that it was meant to be a collaborative environment with open sharing of ideas and comments. In fact, some of the labs were even part of each other's R01 funding.
There was this one postdoc's work was similar to my(also a postdoc) current research project. They worked on Gene A , while I work on Gene B. Both A and B contribute towards X phenotype as they share a lot of similar genetic and physical interactors. I've been taking a rather collaborative approach in understanding what this postdoc was working on and tried my best to share my ideas and results whenever they present.
Recently, I was horrified to know that due to the postdoc having some personal commitments that they decided to leave academia and want to publish whatever results they might have into a smaller scale journal. I was even more horrified and agitated that our results shared almost 80% similarity despite working on different genes (think of it as the experiments were the same, the conclusions were the same just the cell lines were different). I was further annoyed by the fact that they had a new piece of key data that was never there throughout the years they've been presenting and it took me almost a year to establish the same data. A month after I presented my results, the other lab miraculously also generated the same observations using the caveats I listed.
I'm currently filled with so much rage and anxiety when my PI approach to tell me that I have to also try aiming to cut parts of my data to fit into a smaller paper so that we can at least publish back to back with the other lab. It annoys me because I find it unfair that I left to do damage control and was thrown under the bus. It annoys the heck out of me that the other PI kept acting apologetic for wanting to publish earlier because the postdoc is leaving soon. Moreover, I'm not considered to be a collaborator on the project even though the other PI hinted that he will be putting my PI as an author in the manuscript.
To me , the apologies are cheap and insincere since I recalled how much gaslighting I had to deal with the other PI whenever I present my results. Looking back, it might just a tactic to stall my work while giving their postdoc ample time to reproduced mine. My PI , who still wants to maintain a cordial relationship, flatly told me to stop complaining and get working on re-assembling my results and writing a brand new manuscript. It annoys the heck out of me that my intended story is being butchered into incohesive parts that I now need to put in even more extra effort into making them whole. My PI tried to say that I can cut up my materials into different, smaller manuscripts which was undoubtedly unfair for me since it placed unwarranted stress for me to get everything ready in a short amount of time and will also reduce the value of the research when they're taken apart.
Because I left a paper trail of every correspondences i have with the other lab including whenever i shared my results with them, my friends were suggesting :
a) I should just report to the research ombudsman which will inevitably just not be fruitful since technically we're not working on the same genes and so it can easily be swept under the table as being pure coincidence.
b) I should just bite the bullet and do as much damage control as necessary.
I learned my lesson that ideas are cheap and you're not even safe from people from your own institute when you share unpublished data. Yes, I'm venting and ranting and yes I'm very bitter about it.

39, F, 5ft 5in, 123 pounds, white/Japanese.
Primary complaint: I recently started seeing what I thought were bug bites, first on my left hand and later on my arms, now on my legs. The ones on my hand were raised bumps that itched like bug bites, but others have since appeared, on my hand and elsewhere, that are flat and look like a hive or rash. Some itch a lot and others don't itch at all.
Duration: Approx 1 week Medical Issues: none Current Medications: birth control (for decades), Allegra for whatever-this-is Drinking: Occasional 1-2 per month Smoke/Drugs: No
Other Factors/Info:
- They seem to appear in groups of two together. - There are none on my torso, chest, back, upper legs, scalp, or feet so far. - They are not scaly, no blister or pus, and the week-old ones are fading away. - I don't feel any more sick than usual and don't seem to have a fever. - They are not any more itchy than bug bites/do not keep me awake at night or anything and I do not scratch them. - Taking Allegra does not seem to do much and doesn't prevent new ones from appearing. - They are NOT mosquito bites, which present as raised "plateau" welts on me. - Unfortunately I am on tour with a musical, so am in a different hotel/city/state every week, which I understand can make diagnosis very difficult. - I was in Thousand Oaks CA this week. I have gotten hives or skin rashes while visiting CA before that did not look like this, but wonder if it might be some irritant in that part of the country. - Locations are five on left hand; three on left upper arm; six on right arm in groups of two; two together on back of left lower leg; one on front of left ankle and one on side of left ankle; two on face/right cheek; and one very large bright red itchy one on back of right lower leg (perhaps it's two combined)

Primary complaint: I recently started seeing what I thought were bug bites, first on my left hand and later on my arms, now on my legs. The ones on my hand were raised bumps that itched like bug bites, but others have since appeared, on my hand and elsewhere, that are flat and look like a hive or rash. Some itch a lot and others don't itch at all.
Duration: Approx 1 week Medical Issues: none Current Medications: birth control (for decades), Allegra for whatever-this-is Drinking: Occasional 1-2 per month Smoke/Drugs: No
Other Factors/Info:
- They seem to appear in groups of two together. - There are none on my torso, chest, back, upper legs, scalp, or feet so far. - They are not scaly, no blister or pus, and the week-old ones are fading away. - I don't feel any more sick than usual and don't seem to have a fever. - They are not any more itchy than bug bites/do not keep me awake at night or anything and I do not scratch them. - Taking Allegra does not seem to do much and doesn't prevent new ones from appearing. - They are NOT mosquito bites, which present as raised "plateau" welts on me. - Unfortunately I am on tour with a musical, so am in a different hotel/city/state every week, which I understand can make diagnosis very difficult. - I was in Thousand Oaks CA this week. I have gotten hives or skin rashes while visiting CA before that did not look like this, but wonder if it might be some irritant in that part of the country. - Locations are five on left hand; three on left upper arm; six on right arm in groups of two; two together on back of left lower leg; one on front of left ankle and one on side of left ankle; two on face/right cheek; and one very large bright red itchy one on back of right lower leg (perhaps it's two combined)

I know this is mostly a repost, but got some stuff to add
Working on a big Season 7 concept with a lot of episodes in the works, but throughout the feedback I'm getting, 1 specific part of an episode is giving me trouble in figuring out how it should be executed, so I might as well share it here for hopes of extra feedback
This episode called "The Pair", which would be intended to air earlier in S7 but not SUPER early (Roughly EP9 or 10), would be the episode where Tobias & Masami become an official couple. More specifically, in the 1st half, Gumball's helping Masami find a suitable boyfriend & Darwin's helping Tobias find a suitable girlfriend (But neither groups cross paths), while Anais is spying on both groups from home. By the end of the school day due to events that happen, Tobias & Masami feel guilty & think they don't deserve love in their life, leaving Gumball & Darwin also depressed when they get home, until Anais flat out admits that she was spying on them & has a plan to get Tobias & Masami together. Specifically, Gumball & Darwin take Masami & Tobias (respectively) to some abandoned construction site to get those 2 to know each other more, then if/when things go south, Anais appears & acts as if her body's possessed by some evil force (Even speaking in a scary voice) & tries to attack the groups, but the only thing she actually does is inflict sleeping attacks that make it look like the victim is dead before they wake up shortly after, & Gumball, Darwin, Tobias, & Masami all defeat the seemingly possessed Anais. Their idea is to make Tobias & Masami think they're in danger without actually putting them in danger (Barring any accidents such as most of the time when parts of the site collapse) to give the 2 emotional close-call moments together. Basically think the ideas of "The Storm" & "The Romantic", but IMO, actually done right (Yeah not a fan of either episode)
As for the specific part I'm having trouble with, I want the idea of everyone beating up Anais to be her idea. After she admits to spying on them, she embraces whatever punishment they'd give her (But they don't give any, cuz well, they're already used to being stalked by Sarah XD), then when saying she has a plan, she tries to entice them with "Cuz you'll all get to beat me up!" What I'm trying to go for is Anais is absolutely ready for, & to some extent actively wants, to get beat up by her brothers as comeuppance for spying on them & not spending more time with them in the past, & having it happen on the plan to get Tobias & Masami together seems like the perfect time in her opinion. But I'm not quite sure how to handle that scene where Anais admits she wants it, without making it feel...dirty? uncomfortable? I do want the scene to be at least somewhat emotional, & have Gumball & Darwin be really weirded out by Anais's behavior but still eventually comfort her & agree to her plan. Here's what I currently have planned for that transcript
Anais: [Gumball & Darwin enter the room, looking depressed, causing Anais to act/look concerned] You guys ok?
Gumball: [Sighs] Sorta.....just...disappointed is all
Darwin: Same. You wanna talk about it, Gumball?
Gumball: Not really. Still in a bit of a downer mood
Darwin: Yeah...I get it...
Anais: [Confident Smile] It's ok. I already know everything. You both were trying to help a classmate find the true love of their life, Gumball helping Masami, & Darwin helping Tobias, & (TBF). Now they're both depressed & think they don't deserve love in their life which is why both of you feel guilty right now, but because both Tobias & Masami went through the exact same thing, the obvious move is to get them together, right?

 | Ordered this guy from AliExpress after seeing a review here for another Enlan model. Prior to that I wasn’t really aware of the brand. Anyway I waited the amount of time you wait when you order direct from China and pay $2 for S&H to the States. And then I had it in hand submitted by TopRealz to BudgetBlades [link] [comments] It is a small, but I’d say very reasonable sized EDC, with a 2 13/16” (72mm) blade and a 3 13/16” (97mm) closed length. It’s very close to the dimensions of most of the ‘3/4/7’ pocketknives I carry for daily use. It sports a very grippy G10 handle with full steel liners (not nested) and additional texturing milled into the scales —plus chamfering all the way round. The 8Cr13MoV blade is something of a cross between a sheepsfoot and a drop point, with a swedge and a fairly high flat grind. The stock is right about .10” thick so despite the geometry not being ‘super slicey’ the blade still slices well. It also pierces effectively even though the point is below the centerline of the handle. Both edge and point seem to walk a good balance between being fine and robust enough for harder use It has a single-position clip, oriented for tip down carry (meh) but it is a sturdy one that functioned well right out of the box. It’s got a nice finish as well and doesn’t feel flimsy or look ‘chintzy’. And most importantly it will last, not scratch off like a painted black or bead blast finish Similarly both the action and sharpness were very good out of the box. It was shaving sharp, though I did keen it up a little as I find many factory edges to be over-polished even when razor sharp. They seem to have done a good job with the heat treat as it easily takes and holds a keen edge that bites into material at the slightest touch. The pivot uses a combination of phosphor bronze and nylon washers (looks like PB on one side and nylon on the other). It has a very smooth and easy action using the nicely machined, and reversible, thumbstud. Detent is light but you can flick it out nicely, though I found myself preferring a fast slow-roll given how light and small the blade is. It locks up very solidly. Like, this is one of the more robust liner locks I’ve ever handled. The (fairly thick) liner springs into full contact with the tang but stays ‘early’ giving plenty of room for wear. There is no play whatsoever in any direction. Oh,, and the blade is perfectly centered when closed Really the whole thing is put together like the folks who made it knew what they were doing, and cared. It isn’t a flashy knife at all and does look “budget” especially in its simplicity. But it also looks and feels like it will last a long time and put up with some pretty rough use. I was impressed to see where their priorities lie here. It’s kind of the opposite of the infamous “gas station knife”. Or rather, this is the kind of knife I’d like to see them selling at gas stations instead. Not sure what retail price I’d put on it as it’s value in a western market. But is it worth $13? Hell yes it is |
