2023.06.06 07:48 throwawayforariel Review of The Little Mermaid, Society, and Culture (part 1)

  1. Compared to the original, this is an unwatchable travesty on every level.
  2. Compared to the live-action remakes of this generation, it is pretty good, and the '89 songs are obviously still great...
  3. . . . But, the nuances in change and inflection, as well as the dramatic high notes added to change what were already perfect songs into what are now try-hard ballads, can be jarring and/or feel dense in your ears.
  4. The three new songs are shockingly, offensively bad. Terribly written cheap cliches, horribly sung, and unnecessarily character-bending; low-hangy-fruity metaphors about "uncharted water" vs "gravity" like wtf bitches, I know this was a kid's film but it wasn't some like "goo-goo-ga-ga teletubbies dumb-dumb spoonfeed me and beat me over the head" level infant show you assholes, what is this: a. Ariel's new song is so awful it's actually hurtful and degrading to viewers everywhere- fans and nonfans alike. And referring to herself using the third person is not an Ariel thing, it's a loser thing; b. Eric's strangely effeminate, emasculating, and desperate plea to be rescued by his fantasy girl in the form of his song is just unbelievable. Unbelievable what they did to that man, what a pansy they reduced him to. c. Scuttle's song ironically seems the most appropriate, at least in that it's short and funny enough without altering the character or tone much at all.
  5. Eric is emasculated on various levels (and he is wearing Aladdin's vest, why). He doesn't ever get to prove himself, he doesn't get to annihilate Ursula and save Ariel, and they've even given him a mother who basically keeps his balls in her purse: why?
  6. That's not Ariel. Not physically, not energetically. If this girl is confused/offended to find that people don't think she looks like Ariel, then she obviously needs mental help. And, she often sounds like JLo, as in weirdly nasal and shrill. And, she has the stout upper body of a gymnast, not the delicate feminine ribbon form of Ariel-- and don't fucking tell me garbage like, "body shaming!" because the actress is obviously a gorgeous super model and I'm not saying shit, but her brand of gorgeous happens to not be the fucking brand of the character's gorgeous, and yes it fucking matters you idiots, otherwise it is not a fucking remake. And don't tell me "well it's more realistic that swimmers have stronger upper bodies," because she uses her gigantic FIN and CORE for movement, not her arms much at all. AND she's a mermaid in a film with talking fish so stop acting like "realism" is a tool or a base for your arguments anyway. She doesn't fit the bill, stop trying to pretend she does. We have fucking eyes lol the jig is up wtf are you doing. be embarrassed already and go delete this movie from history right now. The dinglehopper, the iconic hair flip breaking the surface? This shit wasn't written for dreadlocks, neither could be practically accomplished in dreadlocks. Singing longingly at him from the rock, hair flowing wildly and brightly in the wind? Now we have some heavy head of a mop struggling humiliatingly and painfully to prop itself on a rock in some grim display despite it being broad fucking daylight somehow? wtf you clowns. You would have at least made the sea surface fucking sparkle and stuff if it didn't only overemphasize how drab your mermaid inherently is.
Those aren't her sisters, what with their random new names. That's not Ursula, and Ursula is not Ariel's auntie. That's not Triton, mainly because Triton was never before alluded to as a total zeus-gigolo king-bigelow collecting daughters from every culture the way Ariel collects endless thingamabobs from the surface.
  1. Those are not Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder, but they are endearing enough for this film, and they're a likable trio.
  2. The girl who plays Vanessa is the best part of this film and the best actor here: her screen time is like a total of 60-90 seconds in all, and yet she has the most intense and fulfilling resemblance to the energy of the cartoon character she is portraying. She for me made this remake worth it over anything else here.
  3. The graphics are not superb if you care about that stuff. I don't really so it didn't bug me, but nobody looks like they're underwater during dialogues and there are no bubbles ever. The distant shots of her swimming through the water are gorgeous for me personally because I've been preoccupied with mermaids since childhood.
  4. The dresses. The world's most iconic dresses: the blue town dress with the blue bouncy bow, the pink dining gown, the shimmering purple gown, even the white shipwreck thingy with ropes that Scuttle designed. Not a single one of them anywhere to be found in the remake, how dare they...? Instead, we get this cheap, dull frump of a frilly tulle nightmare from some hell dimension where tears are the only currency, paired with some dirty rag of a headband...? wtf man. They didn't even try. They literally kidnapped a Knott's Berry Farm employee in the midst of her jam-making shift, beat her up, stole her smock, and threw it at this random black kid, and then rolled cameras like "here- you be ariel i guess. we have no time, this much so far has already cost $17 billion, hurry, the goal was to launder money not actually spend any, quiCK!"
And what is that weird tube top she wears as a mermaid? WTF is that? A piece of her own fin that she skinned off and plastered across her chest...? Why does it have scales dude it still looks alive and what the fuck is wrong with ALL of you sisters and your skin looking like your fins in the form of fancy tops? Is this how your skin just grows, like those are your tits? Because if not, then you found fish that look exactly like yourselves and harvested them for fashion, if not self-mutilated.
  1. Two-hour run time = too long.
  2. It'll make you nostalgic over the original so you'll likely rewatch the '89 classic to wash this one out of your mouth.
I ended it there.
And then a new wave started forming so I continued lol.
  1. There is a painful recurring issue in this movie: some moments and lines are nearly identical to a point that is almost so fulfilling to relive ... and then there's this slight yet awkward change in the delivery or the word inflection or something that creates this huge THUD in energy, like it just FALLS so LIMP on your head. They invite the comparison and use it to hook your engagement for a second, manipulating you through a nostalgia-mimic-tease, then they immediately drop the ball and make it SUCK and force you to just bo0m DISSOCIATE so hard. I can't explain what a gross, violating feeling it is. It's like, do something way different, OR keep everything the exact same, DON'T meander about somewhere in the middle where there is zero meaning, and DON'T embark upon recreating a scene or a line only to deviate from it mid-sequence or mid-sentence.
  2. It's creepy any time she pops her head above water lurking to secretly observe Eric. It's like horrifying. Why is it always dark, why is she always wriggling her fingers like an excited witch over the rocks, and why does her hair look like the girl's from the Ring.
  3. In Aladdin, they do this weird thing where "the help" gets involved in the background like in a Shakespearean play, to aid in the young lovers' love, which I thought was annoying. Then they photocopied that general subplot into this remake too, shamelessly, carelessly, as not-Grimsby and some random new lady nobody asked for are to be some unsung heroes now.
  4. Also, they morphed Eric into Princess Jasmine in this remake, what with his "but i don't wanna be a prince, i wanna go beyond the palace walls, oppressive parent-figure!" just to complete his character transformation into a woman, I guess?
  5. Ariel is the valiant knight who kills Ursula, and she doesn't wed Erica in the end, just to complete her character transformation into a man, I guess?
  6. Ariel suddenly chiming in passionately during "Under the Sea" is a humiliating misunderstanding of the whole plot.
  7. Scuttle was honestly okay. Of all the horrible things of this movie, she's not among them. Obnoxious, eccentric, slapsticky, raspy, blunt ass energy: she's not Scuttle, but she's a good enough rendition of his general energy. Most importantly, kids will likely enjoy Scuttle and Sebastian more than anything else over the grueling two hours.
  8. There's nothing to say about Triton, because there was nothing there. Just the low monotone echoes of some hispanic dude in the distance? He was like a ghost, played by a ghost.
There's nothing to say about Ursula, because there was nothing there. She was almost exactly like the cartoon one for the most part, only like the general skeleton form or outline of her with nothing inside. Or like a cardboard cutout of her that somebody apathetically toted about the scenery as if just to get a reference the way they do in pre-shoots and rehearsals and shit. The parts where she should be intensely belting or spitting shit out, she is muted; the parts where she should be calm, she is belting shit out and making a spectacle out of her confused, talentless self.
  1. There's no grand orchestral opening scene introducing the sisters- huge letdown from the film's onset. But at least it plummets your expectations to a safe below ground haven from whence you might endure the rest of the, like I said, grueling hours.
  2. The glittery sparkling ocean surface and dreamy land/seascapes: nowhere to be found. The gorgeous glistening seaside castle: fucking gone man. There are just zero shimmers, sparkles, bubbles, or color pops in this bleak abysmal damp cave of a fucking movie, people, when that was like 94% of the freaking aesthetic, vibe, energy, spirit, function, lullaby, and purpose of the goddamn original. I'll kill you all for this shit.
  3. In the end, all the wealthy black fisherman in broken down boats (?) within a blink of an eye suddenly find themselves surrounded by terrifying sci-fi fish-people-aliens, some just chilling there in their own personal boats like this is their uncle's lagoon, nonchalantly flapping their gigantic slimy fins all over the place with such a sense of belonging somehow like this is their comfort zone, rubbing their titty-scales on everybody's personal property, making out with the locals and shit- like holy smokes they came together pretty quick, no shock, no nothing, fucking none of these humans are scared, confused, or even like squeamish? BUT the only other time you saw this shit was when that gigantic octopus almost ate all of your babies at the last wedding: why are you so calm that being your only other association to these creatures...?! And if you're this calm and unfazed by sea-people, then what the fuck was even the main conflict of this entire film? Ariel could have been flapping her way through the city streets emasculating Eric in public instead of just in private this whole time, obviously nobody here cares, fish, human, pegasus, black queen, what have you, they're all within the realm of possibility- nay, probability. In the cartoon, the mermaids respect fucking boundaries in the end, they're just waving goodbye from their ocean border, they're not crawling into the people's fucking houses at high tide wagging their fish genitals at humanity looking to breed a new species in the name of a wedding nobody invited them to wtf is this.
  4. The original's a father-daughter story before it's a boy-girl-love story. Anybody who gives a shit about that movie knows that. Doing things like giving Erica extra songs/story pieces as if he's co-star of the narrative is such a mortifyingly dense misconception of such an otherwise uniquely gorgeous, deep story singing a whole other tune entirely. Legitimately shameful.
. . . AND THEN rewriting the "love story" so that Ariel's "a more empowered female" as if to admit you mislabeled the original Ariel "unempowered," as in, you obviously oppressed her by overlooking everything beautiful and true about her, projecting all of this shit "to fix" that didn't even exist, and by "fixing it" as you have, you only stripped the girl of her voice. Your movie makes it clear you have no idea what the film you're "recreating" is even about, and your capacity to grasp the basic symbolism, themes, and meanings of even children's films is below a third-grade level.

2023.06.06 07:00 Safe-Chard-6286 Nonexistent Map WTF

So basically my map decided to stop existing overnight. By that I mean extacly this. When I press M game will freeze for split second then UI elements that are present with open map (Menu, zoom etc) start overlapping HUD but the map itself doesn't show. All I get is extacly same thing that camera see's before opening map. I can open menu (and use it fully no problem) and press ESC to close map nothing more, it doesn't show anything that should be shown, not players nor camp's nothing. I'll try to add screenshots but later when I launch PC
Things I tried to fix problem 1:Removing all mods (duh) - removed them from game dir not only disabling them 2:Deleting config files 3:Verifying game files - did 3 times 2 normally and 3rd with deleting few small files from game dir to make sure it's verified correctly by forcing MS store to redownload some files (didn't work downloaded only files I removed so I guess no corruption or anything) 4:Checked if there wasn't update to game/windows/drivers overnight which could justify such problem but nope 0 updates 5:Tried praying to Todd Howard for blessing me with fix 6:Didn't tried sacrificing goats because I live in city, it's not exactly stuff you can get at corner store 7:looked for help at discord (one from this community links) 8:Writed to Bethesda support (tho I don't expect them to be helpful)
While game is still playable, lack of map is quite detrimental to overall experience and ability to do so. I would rather avoid reinstalling the game as I have metered connection (100GB/month after that I need to pay 15 euro for another 100GB which is bit of strain on my budget [around 100euro/month for everything] as I'm unemployed due to fighting with depression. Which is another reason I would like to fix this problem ASAP)

2023.06.06 05:15 Plenty_Ad_7401 Aggressive homeless encampment - what can be done?

I hope this doesn't come across as insensitive but I am at my wits end. I play beach volleyball a couple nights a week at Overlander Park and for the last two months, we've been getting yelled at by a man in a blue tent living on the bank. It's not all the time, so it's been whatever, we've ignored him. The encampment has grown in the last few weeks to several tents, and the people living there have gotten more aggressive and more destructive. Several trees along the bank are being hacked at, they've tied their bikes and things to the stairs that lead to the beach and the garbage bins so no one can access them and they've threatened two players who went near the area to retrieve a ball. I've spoken to some of the people who live in the townhouse nearby and they've said the same things: when they're in the park, they're yelled at, threatened and even if the camp is silent, they're unnerved as those people know where they live.

Today I was talking to a man who lives there and he said he caught someone breaking into the shed of one of the houses in broad daylight. Police were called but the guy doing it obviously left when caught and the police could only take the homeowner's retelling of events. Any time I have been yelled at or unable to walk the River's Trail, I've reported it in the MyCity app. Each time it gets moved to "in progress" but obviously nothing is done. Other people in my league have phoned the city to make a complaint, and police have been called by someone who lives in the houses near there, and again, nothing. I don't know what the bylaw is here, where I'm from people are allowed to tent in a public park overnight but it must be decamped by morning. Bylaw officers are obviously not getting involved in the encampment and the people living in it are making it so awful to use the park (and in some instances impossible). I have compassion, I know many of us are one paycheck away or bad decision away from being homeless, but it's not fair that this specific group of people are making things hard for people just wanting to enjoy the park or walk the River's Trail. What else can I do? How can I get the city to do something? Is there someone other than bylaw to call?

2023.06.06 05:07 ObviousBig315 [TOMT][TV/ADULT SWIM][2004-2005] Adult Swim bumper showing people with food that has insects in it.

I vividly remember seeing this bumper as a child on Adult Swim around 2004-05. It showed various people going about their days carrying food unknowingly(or maybe they didn’t care) full of insects feasting on the food. Once scene that really stood out to me was a White Male outside on a sunny day in some city carrying a black tray walking past a garbage can. The tray had a hotdog like the kind you would get from a street cart in NYC then they zoom in on the hotdog and it’s either some Beatles or maybe a Praying Mantis feasting on it. I didn’t eat hot dogs for awhile after that. An online search brings zero results so maybe it could be lost media?
Any help would be great as this bumper has been on my mind for the last 15 years !

2023.06.06 05:00 PuzzleheadedList3630 More and more people starting to dislike dogs/owners

So I was scrolling local posts on nextdoor and came across a few ppl who are starting to see how annoying dog culture is becoming. A lady posted that someone walked up her driveway to throw their dog’s little poo bag in her trash can. Of course, the nutters were all “well at least the picked it up” as if dog owners deserve praise for doing what they’re supposed to do!? How do you walk onto someone’s property to throw your dog’s mess away?? Around here, garbage men grab bags out of the can rather than dumping it in. so when the garbage man leaves the poop bag, it’s now the homeowner’s responsibility to dispose of someoneelse’s dog’s poo!
Another on next door was a woman complaining about a guy who only ever walks around with his pit or bully off leash. He lives above a business, aka lives in a city. He will let his dog outside off leash by itself to poo on the sidewalk and he doesn’t come out to clean it up. Others commented saying he does it everyday.
Just now on twitter, there’s a video of a woman getting dressed and her dog is licking her legs and feet nonstop. A decent amount of people commented saying how gross it is and even on about how disgusting and unsanitary dogs are. We’re making fun of how delusional nutters are lol there is no logical reason to have or want a dog. I’m glad more people are being vocal about their dislike for these pests!!

2023.06.06 04:51 fulfillthecute Refining u/jchutney's First Map to 6 Lines (with My Own Addition)

Refining u/jchutney's First Map to 6 Lines (with My Own Addition)
I have some great ideas for u/jchutney's first map. Six lines provide excellent connection throughout the city with possible extensions. I added a few new lines to improve the flow in the city, with the 5 train being mostly my own idea. All stations are preserved from the original map.
I can't draw digitally except on MS Paint (although I'm trying to learn using vector drawing software) so I draw on paper. I have some nice paper with grids that help me with the task.
I put five pairs of cross-platform transfer stations like the ones in Hong Kong MTR, denoted with these symbols next to the station: X, /, (, ). X and / mean trains travel in the same direction on both sides of the platform, while ( and ) is the opposite direction. Two more pairs can be placed on the loops.
There are also single cross-platform transfer stations across the network. Some lines share tracks, such as 1 and 3 longitudinally on the "Main St" (as u/jchutney mentioned in the original map) and 2 and 3 in the top right corner. The interlining can also work like cross platform transfer in some sense. I intensionally decreased the interlining to two lines so that the schedule can be kept simple, especially if thr budget is cut to share tracks with multiple lines on both loops (currently I have quadruple tracks on shared routing).
Some possible variations of service are:
A. Occasionally 3 terminates at Miller Crossing, which is why 3 merges into 1 on the map.
B. 2 runs shuttle services (either through-running on 4 for one loop or to Huckleberry) to fill up the southern part of the line that doesn't interline with 3.
C. 5 sometimes runs to the Airport on the 6 to provide airport connections during weekends (when the track capacity opens up).
D. Have 3 run express on Main St. This can be done with quadruple tracks all the way or bypass loops at certain stations. I prefer quadruple tracks of course, although I designed many networks without.
Extensions can be made on all termini of the lines, including 3 at Airport to the east. A prospective 7 can run parallel to 1/3 and extend north and southeast of the city.
Also this is my first post on this sub. If I have time I would like to share more about my previously designed networks. All on paper and these include both maps and diagrams.

2023.06.06 04:19 Inside_Skin3252 Considering Moving to the MS Coast, but Have Only Lived in Big Cities

Hi Everyone! My wife's family lives on the coast of Mississippi just west of Gulport and with our second kid on the way she has a strong desire to move there. We live in Denver and I've only lived in large cities like Dallas and Minneapolis throughout my life. I'm wondering what your take would be on someone with my past living experiences moving down there? Can a "city boy" enjoy life on on the MS coast? Are there guys in their 30s down there that would enjoy someone like me who prefers life at a faster speed?

2023.06.06 04:09 kmtwb I was tormented by a spirit during my first 2 years at University

In 2020, I moved over 6 hours away from my hometown in Southern Ontario to attend University up north. I moved into my down with my best friend from high school whom I had known for years. In this building, it is important to note that it has been around since the school was first built however it is frequently renovated and worked on because it more often than normal, catches fire (more details later).
So, to set the scene: it's 2020, mid-pandemic and I had just been discharged from the army. My best friend and I had applied for the same university major and had decided that if we got in that we would live together. Well, sure enough, we got in and the only dorm that could accommodate our room request (i.e. moving into the same apartment with separate bedrooms) was situated directly across from a hospice. and for those that don't know a hospice is a medical facility where people go when they are close to death to live out the end of their lives in as much comfort as possible. This hospice was the only view out of our small windows and was the only one in our area.
Now, as I mentioned earlier, the building frequently caught fire, but what was odd and worth mentioning about it, was that it only caught fire in apartment #5 on any given floor. My best friend and I lived on the 5th floor in the 5th apartment for 2 years even throughout the summer and fortunately, we never had a fire, but frequently found ourselves having to accommodate firefighters and other workers entering our rooms due to the smoke and water damage from various different fires from random floors directly above us. Along with my BFF, I had two other roommates who were very vocal about when they were home or not (we had a group chat), and for all these experiences they were never home. or even in the city for that matter. My BFF and I both got jobs working at a Lvl 1 Trauma Center as nightshift security and thus paranormal stuff didn't scare us as we frequently were forced to work in the morgue and even witness people die on a daily basis, with whole bunch of other things happening (maybe stories for another time).
The main experience that happened early on was when my BFF and I both awoke to hear someone going through our cupboards and garbage in the kitchen, which was right against my bedroom wall, thus making it super loud. it was about 1pm and because we were on night shift, it was our version of 1am. So, thinking my best friend had gotten up oddly early I went to talk to her, but when I opened my door there was no one. I woke her up quietly and we searched the entire apartment and hallways with whatever we could use as weapons. There was no one but everything was open, our fridge, the oven, drawers, and cabinets. As well, our garbage had been thrown across the room. All the breakers in our apartment had been switched off as well, which we didn't discover at first. It is important to mention that the only entry into our apartment, that being the front door, automatically locked when closed so it was most definitely locked 24/7. I called building security and no one had been seen on camera entering our dorm except for my BFF and me around 8am after we had gotten off work at the hospital. there was no explanation for who had done this but still, they took our statements and said they'd do patrols, they never found more information.
Over 3 months later, it was summer and my BFF and I had been 2 of 11 people left in the building over the summer, with the rest being mostly just international students who could afford to do quarantine protocols again in September as it took 2 weeks. We were the only ones on our floor but regularly heard stomping outside in the hall but neither of us never saw anyone through our peephole or even when we often heard knocks on the front door, however when we checked, no one every time. So aside from the knocking and stomping, super quiet summer except for one morning. I'll never forget it it shook us to the bone.
It was 10am and my roommate and I were asleep after work. I never locked my bedroom door as my bff loved to come in and hang all the time but for some reason, I locked it that entire week. and good thing too because I awoke to frantic and I mean FRANTIC knocking- no pounding on my bedroom door. I was obviously super disoriented as I had just finished a 12 hour shift a few hours earlier, but I saw two dark shadows under the door resembling feet. I figured my bff needed something and woke up but I called out before getting up because I was annoyed to be awake this early. The feet stayed unmoving but the knocking stopped. with a heavy sigh, I got up threw on a sweater and checked the time (it was around 10am), and went to open the door, with the shadows still there I assumed it was my bff. When I put my hand on the handle to unlock it, I heard a thud, and then, worried if my bff had fallen, I threw the door open to see my front door closing as if someone was just leaving. I ran over and saw a completely black figure turn the corner. I followed (my security guard instincts kicking in) but when I turned the corner, nothing. I went back and my roommate asked why I was knocking on the walls like that, she heard it from inside my room on an adjoining shared wall to both our bedrooms. we again called security but only I was seen chasing after nothing on the cameras. After my boyfriend, a firefighter started sleeping over frequently because were both spooked, the fires stopped, and most other things did too. We never had another incident on this level. We moved out after 2 years there and beyond hearing the usual bang, no other issues.
edit: also important detail I forgot to add is that we had an anti-break-in security stick against our front door while we slept, and they were conveniently moved into the living room or against the wall after these events. we also tested the stick to see if it actually worked and trust me even my firefighter boyfriend and his bff couldn't force their way in

2023.06.06 03:52 kmtwb I was tormented by a spirit(?) my first 2 years of univerisity

Burlington Odd fellows Lodge, Queen City Lodge#1 featured on podcast
"Take one seventy-year Odd Fellow, his great grandson, a twenty-year Odd Fellow from Indiana, a guy from the neighborhood looking for a "thirty-year project" and a few other new folks and put them together and you have the recipe for reviving a lodge that had become profoundly inactive as they retreated from the community and membership had shrunk. They had become a "kitchen-table lodge," content to meet casually around the kitchen table. With the involvement of the new members and the guidance of the older ones, the lodge has successfully moved from being complacent to vibrant. Now a hive of activity, Queen City Lodge #1 of Burlington, Vermont is the place to be for all kinds of activities, from collecting food for the food bank to tabletop gaming. We talk with Ryon, Alex, Everett, Brandin, and Dylan about how they remade the lodge culture and took what was otherwise a nondescript lodge and made it a hub for community participation. Along the way they brought back the ritual and regalia (and are still looking for Third-Degree collars for all their new members) and are now functioning as a traditional Odd Fellows lodge. There's no Shoutout for this episode but we did want to share the fundraiser by Osage Lodge #712 in Pennsylvania. They are selling bicentennial pins for the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. They can be ordered be emailing [email protected]. This episode's Odd Podge has Alex telling a classic fraternal joke, Ryon complimenting Alex on being appointed District Deputy Grand Master, Toby talking about presenting a scholarship on behalf of the Grand Lodge and Rebekah Assembly of Washington, Ainslie previewing his lodge's garbage pickup and movie night, and Mike talking about an upcoming wedding with a lot of Odd Fellows involvement. PS—in case anyone has collars to donate to Queen City Lodge #1, email Alex at [email protected]. "

2023.06.06 03:46 amoeba953 Rating cities in my general region

New Orleans, LA: 6/10
My birthplace. The city is teeming with culture and history that spans over 300 years. Most of the touristy parts of the city are pretty walkable, with added street cars. The French Quarter is full of tourists, but fun, and Uptown, and the Marigny is more laid back, truly something for everyone. The food is amazing and having Mardi Gras off is always a bonus. On the flip side, the crime. It’s never been good but since 2020 it’s been really fucking bad. Carjackings and homicide make the nightly news every day. The streets are also always buckled or full of potholes on account of the city being below sea level. Also the city sits in one of the most hurricane vulnerable areas in existence. Katrina displaced us for a year, and every time we’re in the cone for a storm, everyone that remembers Katrina has PTSD flashbacks.
Gulfport/Biloxi, MS: 7.5/10
This is the closest metro area to New Orleans on the gulf. A lot of people from NOLA have beach houses here, especially in Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian. It’s much more laid back than NOLA and everything here revolves around the water: Fishing, boating, sailing, seafood, etc. Biloxi also has the most casinos between Vegas and Atlantic City. Mardi Gras is a thing here too. The beaches on the mainland are alright, (free, parking everywhere). The water is kinda murky, but there are undeveloped barrier islands 10-ish miles offshore that you can get to by ferry or private boat (which most people here have) and the water there rivals Florida’s. Hurricanes are a problem here too. Katrina absolutely fucked this area up, like worse than New Orleans.
Mobile, AL: 4.5/10
Where I go to college. The city is a big port destination. The downtown area is reminiscent of New Orleans but not nearly as cool. They claim to be home to the oldest Mardi Gras Parade, but it’s much more low budget and less fun than NOLA’s. Local cuisine is good. Crime is pretty bad but could be worse. Outside of the downtown core is basic American suburban hell. Terrible traffic, 6 lane roads lined with strip malls, fast food, and storage facilities. The city is not walkable whatsoever. I got hit on my bike here. Pretty good beaches are an hour away in Gulf Shores with a shit ton of touristy things to do.
Jackson, MS 2/10
This city is basically the Detroit of the South. It’s basically New Orleans if you took everything away except crime and rap music. There’s nothing to do here. The city is economically crippled bc all the white flight gravitated investment to the suburbs, which are a world difference from the city itself. You always play Russian roulette when showering, washing dishes, or drinking tap water bc you never know if it’s contaminated. From 2010 to 2020 the city shrunk more than anywhere else in America with a population over 100k. Nothing redeemable about Jackson.
Atlanta, GA: 5/10
I don’t personally like Atlanta as a sports city that much being a Saints fan an everything, but there’s a shit ton of things to do here. Six flags, aquarium, coke world, Stone Mountain, sports games, you name it. The city does not deserve to be called southern though. Nothing about this city is southern. It’s full of northern liberals that know nothing about Georgia outside of their little bubble. There’s also some pretty rough ghettos on the south side of town too. Traffic is abysmal at best, and stuck for days in the snow on the interstate at the worst. It takes 2 hours to cross the city. Atlanta is close to the mountains though, which is pretty nice.
Nashville, TN: 7/10
I haven’t been to Nashville in a while but I can’t remember a bad trip any time I’ve visited. The downtown is pretty hip. If you like country music, this is Mecca for you. The Cumberland River runs right through the heart of the city, which I’ve rowed with my crew team. Nissan Stadium, where the Titans play, is right across the river from Broadway and is connected by a pedestrian bridge. Outside of the city there’s a lot of lakes and low mountains to explore, but it’s being ever encroached by suburban sprawl.
Baton Rouge, LA: 4/10
I lived in BTR for a year after Katrina. The only things to do here revolve around LSU. No disrespect to LSU tho, games in Tiger Stadium are electric. Joe Burrow is basically Jesus here. There’s a crime problem here but not the same level as NOLA. There’s also a lot of chemical plants around, being on the Mississippi River and all. Traffic is really fucking bad since there’s only one bridge crossing the river so it all gets bottlenecked at rush hour. The city is 90 minutes from NOLA if you get too bored, which you will eventually.
I might do more cities outside of the south, idk yet.

On 3rd thought in regards to the Endurance's low EPA rating, maybe the reason is more simple than we all think...like Tesla, the Endurance's brake pedal is 100% for friction braking and requires one pedal driving to regenerate power
I'm starting to think Lordstown Motors may not have any issues with their regen braking. In all 3 drive modes that the Lightning offers - one pedal, normal, and sport - regen is always on. That's called "blended braking". That's not the case with the Endurance and like Tesla, regenerative braking is limited to the one-pedal drive mode so it effectively acts like a toggle of sorts. During the EPA city tests, I wonder if the brake pedal was being engaged to stop more than letting one-pedal do it's thing to regen or that one-pedal was completely turned off for the tests.
Here are 2 links to forums I found insightful:
Aptera forum - Regen options and drive modes
Tesla forum - Does the brake pedal activate regenerative braking before the brake pads apply friction?

Back in October, regen was already reported working well:
Oct 28, 2022 - Car and Driver - 2023 Lordstown Endurance Electric Pickup Is Up and Running
The four motors' horsepower and torque outputs are not yet finalized, but the company is estimating 440 horses from those motors, one at each wheel. In its Normal mode, the truck accelerates swiftly but without the kidney punch of a GMC Hummer EV or a Tesla. Speed is capped at 75 mph—a challenge when you're trying to navigate fast, aggressive Detroit-area freeway traffic. One-pedal driving is the default mode, though it can be switched off, and Lordstown has tuned its regenerative braking well. Drivers can select a Sport mode too, which gives more abrupt accelerator response and aggressive regen with transitions that felt much jerkier. We doubt Sport mode will be important to companies who want their drivers to get the most miles out of fleet trucks using the least electricity.
And the regen was clearly demonstrated during the NACTOY review videos with regen modes of "normal" and "light". This guy was clearly in one pedal drive mode:
https://youtu.be/qqbCfJ17TKg?t=258
https://preview.redd.it/dw1el7o9ga4b1.png?width=962&format=png&auto=webp&s=64f79457ff9ee34cee5611a9976425dd01dd7580
But without blended braking, I don't think the Lightning Pro gets over 200 miles either. Wonder why Tesla never decided to support their friction brakes with regen braking by the motors? They do use friction braking and ABS to help support stopping for one pedal mode tho - which is a form of "blended braking" - but it doesn't help with regen and they're under investigation for "phantom braking" because of it.
https://electrek.co/2023/01/11/footage-tesla-phantom-braking-causing-8-car-crash-pile-up/
For safety reasons, I think it was smart of LMC to keep their friction braking separate from their regenerative braking.
Anyone remember the Lightning's braking issues coming to a stop at high speeds? I wonder if it has anything to do with their blended brakes. If you need to stop abruptly, wouldn't it be safer knowing that the brake pedal is 100% frictional and at most using ABS instead of considering regenerative braking at all?
https://www.carscoops.com/2022/06/fords-f-150-lightning-is-so-fast-that-it-can-smoke-the-raptor-and-its-own-brakes/
“After the third one a warning light came on to indicate the brakes were overheating, along with significant fade and smoke, to the point that the truck couldn’t keep ABS engaged on the later stops.”
Wasn't the corrective action a software patch for that? Could ABS have been getting hung up when trying to regen before stopping?

Anyways, I still think LMC decided to lower their adjustment factor to .63 to get ahead of upcoming regulatory changes - which is what really finalized the 174 mile rating IMO. What's everyone's thoughts here?
Car and Driver says EVs perform over 20% worse than their EPA rating and that the EPA regulations were last revised during the last automotive crash of 2008. I think it's time to update those requirements again now that we have better data to support changes to regulation:
https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a33824052/adjustment-factor-tesla-uses-for-big-epa-range-numbers/
We were especially curious because our own 75-mph highway testing shows Teslas, on average, miss their label range by 27 percent, while all other EVs have missed the mark by 22 percent.
What if the Endurance doesn't miss their EPA mark. I think fleet managers would respect that more than seeing a bigger number on a label sticker...

2023.06.06 03:09 sullycantwell Augie Maniaci cooperating notes

August Maniaci Link: https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=95092#relPageId=11&search=caminiti_rockford)
History of the Milwaukee Outfit
-Al Capone was a camorrista and an associate of Masseria and Capone had a large scale gambling and bootlegging operation
-Joe Aiello would gamble at Capone's places, but when he would lose, he would have the gambling operation raided and Aiello's men would take much more money than was lost
-Capone was paying protection to Masseria
-A dispute arose between Masseria and Aiello and Masseria than brought Capone in and made him a capodecina and told Capone to kill Aiello
-In 1926 or 1927, there was a "Appalachian type meeting" (Generale assemblea?) in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The meetings purpose was to make peace in Chicago, but other families attended
-Tough Tony Capesio was one of the shooters in the St. Valentine's day massacre
-Jack Zutta, a Jewish Aiello associate, was murdered by Capone's gang
-The Milwaukee mafia banned people from helping Aiello.
-Sam Aiello, Joe Caminiti, and Migele Mineo were former Aiello members who fled Chicago to join the Milwaukee family
-Sam Aiello wasn't sympathetic about his brother. Sam returned to Chicago later and was in Jim DiGeorge's crew
-Carl Caputa left Chicago and went to Madison where he became boss. Joe "Joe Pizza Pie" Aiello (unspecified relation to the Joe Capone wared with) went with Caputa to Madison
-Milwaukee didn't try to extort any gamblers until Sam Ferrara
-Al Capone was Neopolitan, the next boss was Tony Accardo who was "Thelast Sicilian to be an important boss," Accardo was succeeded by a Neopolotan Sam Giancana (Pretty sure this info is wrong)
-Chicago outfit was a "Money grabbing operation" where only a few leaders profit "at the expense of the general membership" this had an effect on Milwaukee
-Chicago took over Milwaukee in 1952
-Sam Ferrara wanted to have a piece of the Ogden social club which was a gambling place that Frank Balistrieri had a piece on and Balistieri was Son-In-Law to John Alioto. Balistrieri said no to Ferrara and then Ferrara shelved Balistrieri. Milwaukee then asked Chicago to help them with all the trouble.
-A general meeting was held in 1952; Tony Accardo, Rocco Fischetti, and Sam Giancana attended. Sam Ferrara was taken down as boss and replaced by John Alioto
-Alioto reinstated Balistrieri and made him a capodecina
-While Alioto was boss, no gamblers or businessmen were extorted
-John DiTrapani was a capodecina who didn't like Alioto, so he said he would spend $90,000 and even was willing to finance some murders
-One of DiTrapani's friends "Pasternak" lost a lot of money gambling with the outfit and DiTrapani made it known he was very upset
-Furthermore, Alioto heard about Ditrapani's plans to become boss and this sealed DiTrapani's fate
-Chicago were the ones who ordered DiTrapani's murder, not Alioto
-DiTrapani and Frank LaGalbo (a member and DiTrapani associate) were called to a meeting by the Chicago outfit. The meeting was going to be in Milwaukee though.
-LaGalbo warned DiTrapani not to go. LaGabo himself wasn't going to go.
-DiTrapani went anyway and on March 16, 1954 he was murdered. the following day he was found shot in his car
-LaGalbo was very well connected to Chicago and he set up a transfer where he would be in the Chicago family in the decina of Frank LaPorte
-LaPorte was centered in Chicago Heights
-Jack Enea was also apart of the faction that wanted Alioto taken down as boss. he wasn't killed until November, 1954 (Chicago authorized it)
-In January of 1962, Joe Alioto retired and Frank P. Balistrieri took over, Alioto was upset about this. Alioto apparently felt it should've gone to an older man
-furthermore, Alioto was upset that Balistrieri had an affair with his wife's cousin
-Balistrieri began shaking down gamblers and businessmen
-Balistrieri was collecting $500-$600 from Bruno Ramazini and John Volpe who ran the Holiday House
-Despite not collecting from Frank and Jimmy Fazio who ran restaurants, there was an incident where a bomb went off. After this, Balistrieri went to Florida and when he came back he said that they had a piece of Jimmy Fazio's place in Fort Lauderdale
-Balistrieri was not liked by older members because he never consulted with anyone before making decisions and Maniaci even said it would not surprise him if Balistrieri was murdered. Maniaci said if anyone were to kill Balistrieri, it would be the outfit
II. Organization and Leadership -The 1957 Apalachin meeting was due to Albert Anastasia taking forcible action which affected other bosses without telling them.
-Anastasia was killed due to the disappearance of two unnamed men
-John Alioto and Frank Balistrieri were going to go to Apalachin but didnt at the last moment. Also, attendance was not mandatory at Apalachin
-Maniaci didn't know too much about the commission or its structure, but he said it had around 7 members and though he doesn't know if there is a "boss of bosses," if anyone was it would be Giancana (clearly shows his midwest bias)
-Giancana had control over Madison, Rockford, and Springfield
-Balistrieri went to Chicago periodically for meetings with Giancana, Battaglia, or capodecina Felix "Milwaukee Phil" Alderisio. These meeting were at the underboss Sam Battaglia's farm
-occassionally, Balistrieri would meet with Alderisio, Battaglia, and Marshal Caifano in a Milwaukee hotel
-Ralph Capone of Mercer, Wisconsin isn't connected with Milwaukee or Chicago
-At one point, the Pfister hotel manager Marvin Billet made a deal and Kansas City member Sebastian "Buster" Balestrere (who was "imported" to Milwaukee along with Joseph Gurera for the purpose of shaking bookmakers and businessmen down) found out and this led to Balestrere having leverage over Billet. Eventually, the Fox Head Brewery bought a hotel in Jamiaca and Buster made Billet manager. Balistrieri asked Giancana if he wanted to "take over a large gambling casino in the hotel." Billet lost the managorial position and their plan didn't work.
-Balistrieri is involved in the Continental Music Company.
-The chicago outfit may have 500 members (this is wrong as they may not have had 100 at their peak, though it shows how the smaller families saw them)
-Sam Giancana is the boss, Sam "Teets" Battaglia is the underboss, and the following are capodecina: Felix Alderisio, Marshal Caifano, Frank LaPorte, Tony Maccalucci (ph), and Ross Prio
-Ross Prio is a north side leader who was originally in Jim DiGeorge's crew
-Maniaci heard complaints that people are upset in Chicago that only a few are making money. Also, they are upset that Sam Giancana "is too much of a playboy." CI also advised that John Cerone may be Giancana's successor. Cerone is very close to Tony Accardo
-Frank Balistrieri is related to former Kansas City boss James "Big Jim" Balistrieri (It appears his real last name was Balestrere, though his fathers last name was Balistrieri)
-Joseph Cusimano and Joe Jellosa (or Jealouso) are two Kansas City members who have visited Milwaukee in the past
-The Kansas City import Joseph Gurera was said to have killed two politicians (clearly referring to the infamous hit that left Charles Binaggio and Charles Gargotta dead)
-Balistrieri made Gurera a capodecina and Buster Balestrere worked under him. Both members went back to Kansas City in 1963 after pressure was put on Milwaukee for Anthony Biernat's murder
-On April 18, 1964 Peter Balistrieri's (Frank's brother) daughter married Leonard Drewek, a non-Italian. John Molle, Buster Balestrere, and Jim Balestrere (Not made) all went to the wedding
-Peter Balistrieri is a capodecina
-Rockford's boss is Joseph Zummutto, the underboss is Frank Bucemi, and the consigliere is Joseph Zitto. (FNU) Caltegerone is a member who's old and used to be close to Milwaukee capodecina Pasquale Migliaccio. Caltergerone may be a reference to Carl "Charlie Vince" Caltegerone
-Madison, Wisconsin has 10-15 members. The boss is Carl Caputo and Joseph "Joe Pizza Pie" Aiello is a member. Both are wealthy with real estate investments.
-Benny DeSalvo was a capodecina in Madison, but died in February of 1964 at 84 years old. He was buried in Chicago
-The following is the boss succession of Milwaukee: Vito Guardalabene (Nicola Gentile reported Joseph Vallone was the underboss in 1915) Peter Guardalabene (Son of Vito) Joseph "Big Joe" Amato Joseph Vallone (Boss from mid 1920's-mid 1930's) Joseph Gumina was the underboss to Vallone (also says Gumina was capodecina, maybe he controlled a crew along with being consigliere) Charles Zarcone was the consigliere Pasquale Migliaccio was a capodecina Migele Mineo was a capodecina Tom Lucua (ph) was a capodecina Sam Ferrara (Mid 1930's-1952) Joe Gumina was the underboss (again lists him as capo too) Charles Zarcone is listed as consigliere Pasquale Migliaccio was a capodecina Migele Mineo was a capodecina Joseph Caminiti is also a captain (may have been captain under Vallone as well) John Alioto (1952-1962) Joe Gumina was the underboss (again lists him as capo too) Migele Mineo was a capodecina John DiTrapani was a capodecina until his murder in 1954 Pasquale Migliaccio was a capodecina Frank Balistrieri was a capodecina as well Frank Balistrieri (1962-time document was typed) appears he had no underboss Charles Zarcone would be consigliere if Balistrieri had one, Maniaci doesn't know if he actually was though John Alioto was a capodecina and had the older members in his crew Peter Balistrieri was a capodecina "who has active members under his direction" -Older members are displeased with Balistrieri for not consulting any members and making Joseph Gurera (Kansas City) a capodecina instead of a local member
-Older members blame Balistrieri for the publicity LCN is getting due to Anthony Biernat's murder also there's resentment because no one is making money
-Maniaci said he wouldn't be surprised if they killed Balistrieri one day
-On January 4th, 14th, and the 31st Balistrieri held parties at Gallagher's restaurant in an attempt to get the opposite faction to like him. He planned to have another similar meeting a month later. He also assured the members that jobs would soon open up and he gave Vito Aiello, John Aiello, and Maniaci himself jobs at gambling places.
-Balistrieri is very cautious in regards to his personal movements
-Another CI reported the meeting at Gallagher's was to fix the bad feelings between Myron Jennaro and Paul Bogosian who are both associates of the Milwaukee family
-the following is the structure according to Maniaci: capo: boss sottocapo: Italian not Sicilian term for underboss "consuleri": (see previous comment about spelling) the consigliere is the counselor who is usually an older member capodecina: heads a crew, means "head of ten", but members sometimes have 50 members in their crew (or in some cases zero members) No mention of soldiers
-the following are popular terms used by members: Amico Nostro: friend of ours; used by fellow members to indicate someones a member avugad: means lawyer, Maniaci said there's no significance as a term in Milwaukee, but it probably was just not for low level members. Normally the avugad is a representative on the commission. for example, Milwaukee's avugad would've been Chicago's boss cumpare: means godfather; used to show closeness to someone don: Italian term of respect, not a mafia term onorata: means honor, Maniaci said he's never heard the mafia called onorata society which many sources have reported omerta: Maniaci said it's to express any qualities in the word "manly" sagia: "chair, committee of boss, underboss, consuleri [sic], and capodecina [sic] Tourna: general meeting where all members attend; for an important reason
-the following are members of Milwaukee identified by Maniaci: John Aiello: made under Ferrara Vito Aiello: Made under Ferrara John Alioto: Made under Guardalabene, was boss then capodecina Albert Albana: Suspect in Biernat's murder and was made a month after in January 1963 Mike Albano: Runs Angelo's Pizzaria, long time member
III. Membership -John Alioto did not make any members, but Vallone, Ferrara, and Balistrieri did. (which must've happened when the books were closed either suggesting the midwest didn't follow this or he did it on the sly)
-To be made originally, you had to be Sicilian, but they switched it to just be full Italian
-Members don't have to kill, but this has been a rule in the past, to be made
-Associates are proposed by a made member who knows the associates potential. In the past, the name would go around to all members and if they objected, he couldn't be made
-the associate could cooperate with law enforcement to be made
-in the past, all members had to be present at the initiation ceremonies (Maniaci calls them "tourna" meaning a general membership meeting). They no longer do that though
-The Biernat murderers were alleged to be Steve DeSalvo, Dominic Principe, and Albert Albana. DeSalvo contacted Biernat before the killing
-during the making ceremony, both the proposed member and his sponser's fingers are pricked and their blood is mixed. Then everyone present joins hands and a picture of a saint is burned (presumably in the proposed members hand) and the proposed member takes an oath in Italian to put the organization over everything including family and religion
-Members must obey all orders under threat of death
-No members can deal drugs or they will be killed
-Members need permission before engaging in something that may affect another member
-In the past disputes between members were taken before the "Sagia" (This is also called the Seggia, consiglio, or the Sicilian term consignu)
-The "Sagia'' was composed of a boss, underboss, "consuleri", and the capodecina (the term "consuleri" suggests multiple consigliere, but the document has used the singular and plural terms interchangeably. traditionally, the consiglio had multiple consigliere though. Also "capodecina" suggests one captain, which wouldn't really make sense in the context so it can be assumed they mean all capidecina in the family)
-Balistrieri no longer consults anyone except Chicago and only for big issues
-Maniaci named the following as members of the LCN family in Milwaukee (these are just from memory): John Aiello: Made under Ferrara Vito Aiello: Made under Ferrara; John Aiello's brother John Alioto: Made under Vito Guardalabene; capodecina Albert Albana: Made in early 1964, after the murder of Anthony Biernat Mike Albano: Runs Angelo's Pizzaria; long time member Tony Albano: Mike's uncle; retired Frank Balistrieri: boss; made with John DiTrapani; in Joe Ferrara's crew?; Made capodecina under John Alioto Joseph Balistrieri: Frank's dad; longtime member Peter Balistrieri: Frank's brother; capodecina Joseph Caminiti: Secretary treasurer of Local 257; made in Chicago under Joe Aiello; came to Milwaukee during Aiello-Capone war; bootlegger during prohibition; capodeinca under Vallone and Ferrara; Balistrieri's closest confidant even closer to Frank than Peter; Married to John Alioto's daughter Harry DeAngelo: Ferrara didn't like him; made in 1963; works sanitation or garbage department; 55 years old Carl Di Maggio: long time soldier Salvatore DiMaggio: Carlo's son; burglar eith extesnive record; made under Ferrara Benny DeSalvo: Made in 1963; nephew of old Madison boss Benny DeSalvo who died in 1964; lived in New York for a while but moved back to Milwaukee and went into construction Steve DeSalvo: Close to Balistrieri; primary suspect in Biernat murder; made one month after the murder Sam Ferrara: former boss; operates liquor store; inactive Joseph Gumina; underboss and capodecina under Vallone, Ferrara, and Alioto; he was a boxer after coming to America; bootlegger and then worked at A.O. Smith corp.; capable of murder; his son married Ferrara's daughter August Maniaci: Long time soldier Santo Marino: Brother-in-law to Ferrara; not active; operates tevern Migele "Mike" Mineo: Made in chicago; came to Milwaukee during Aiello-Capone war; capodecina under Vallone, Ferrara, and Alioto; employed by Schlitz Brewery John Pernice: former bootlegger; unemployed; not known to hold leadership position Dominic Principe: Another Biernat murder suspect; made following murder; lives in Illinois Joe Rizzo: inactive; worked as bartender in multiple places Vito Seidita: inactive; 55 years old; works for city of Milwaukee, maybe in street department Joseph Spero: inactive; works for city of Milwaukee, maybe in garbage department Charles Zarcone: consigliere during Vallone, Ferrara, and Alioto; may be consigliere under Balistrieri, but Maniaci doesnt know
Maniaci also listed the following as members affiliated with other families that live in Milwaukee: Frank LaGalbo: runs Chico's restaurant; was supposed to be killed along with DiTrapani; transfered to Chicago under Frank LaPorte John DiBella: member from Italy; close to Joe Bonanno; head of Grande Cheese Company Ralph "bottles" Capone: Chicago member; no importance in the underworld James DiGeorge: operates stock farm; owns land in Adams county, Wisconsin; former capodecina of North Chicago; years ago he was supposed to be killed, but got a pass; lives in exile in Wisconsin (likely shelved)
-Maniaci said that even your immidiate family may not know your made and it's typical for people to keep their sons out of the mafia
Maniaci named the following as people not members of Milwaukee, but closely associated with Milwaukee: Walter "Walter Blackie" Brocca: worked forvarious businesses on behalf of Frank Balistrieri Tony Bruno: No member of Bruno's family has ever been a member Sam Cefalu: gambler; lives at 1606 North Jackson; employed by Balistrieri Sam Cefalu: lives at 3461 North Cramer; not related to the other Sam Cefalu; worked for Balistrieri in a gambling office Anthony "Sheriff Cefalu" Cefalu: Brother of Sam (doesnt say which one); employed as gambler Gus Chiaverotti: Working for Frank Balistrieri in Continental Music Co.; closely associates with Balistrieri Sam DaQuista: No other DaQuista family member has been connected Joe Dentice: No Dentice has been a member Dominic Frinzi: Lawyer for Milwaukee mafia Nick Fugarino: closely associates with LCN Ted Gagliano: Gambler Nick Gentile (Doesnt specify if its Nicola Gentile, the one who wrote a book): not a member, but associates with LCN Joseph Guarniere: not a member Dr. Vito Guardalabene: Son of former boss Pete; no living Guardalabene is a member of mafia Danny Lampone: No Lampones are made Tony LaRosa: associated with LCN, not member Sam Librizzi: Gambling LCN associate Tony and Tom Machi: gamblers John Mandella: not a member Vincent Mercurio: not a member John Percurio: creditor to Frank Balistrieri who he's related to Tom Piscitello: not a member John and Joe Piscuine: Gamblers; no Piscuine's have been members Bruno Ramazini: former operator of Holiday House Frank "Big foot Hogan" Sansone: gambler; runs a restaurant Joe Sardino: no other Sardino's are connected with LCN Tom Sorce: Gambler Frank Stelloh: Close to Frank Balistrieri and Steve DeSalvo; non Italian, so couldn't be made Nick Tarantino: "very close" and trusted by Frank Balistrieri; couldn't be made because he helped police in a burglary investigation, this was well known to LCN John Triliegi: LCN associate Sam Vermiglio: former head of a counterfeit cigarette stamp ring; deals drugs; murdered John Volpe: runs the Holiday house
-An informant, possibly Maniaci, advised in 1964 tht Frank Balistrieri has a share in William Covelli's gambling operation (CI doesnt say, but Covelli may have been made)
-Aforementioned informant said Balistrieri also has a share in John Rizzo's bookmaking operation. Al Albana is the one who brings the money from Rizzo and Covelli to Balistrieri
-Both Maniaci and another CI reported that Balistrieri, Rizzo, and Covelli thought about buting a Key Club in Park City, Illinois. Maniaci said that if Balistrieri was serious, he would have to talk to Chicago first since its their terretory
-On April 5, 1964 CI (aforementioned informant, probably not Maniaci) advised that he expected Buster Balestrere and Joe Gurera were expected to come back to Milwaukee before June of 1964. They are coming back to act as hosts in a big crap game. Nick Tarantino would be a treasurer in the game. Frank Balistrieri will own the game and Buster Balestrere will be pit boss and host. The reasoning for starting the game was it would make a lot of money and wouldn't violate a federal law.
-Sam Cefalu and Sam Librizzi run a gambling office recieving a line from out of state, this is the only out of state line. Sam Dentice is a runner for the operation. Anthony "Sheriff Cefalu" Cefalu used to be involved, but is inactive
-a CI advised that 70% of gamblers are represented by Dominic Frinzi. Frinzi has represented Anthony Cefalu, Charles Piscuine, Robert Pick, William Cole, Steve Halmo, and Harvey Wach
-A CI advised on March 7, 1964 members of "Chicago and Miami outfits" (maybe meaning Tampa) were trying to build a motel in the bahamas. Balistrieri was going to have a 5% interest in it
-A different CI advised that Giancana was interested in a casino at Cat Cay in the Bahamas.
-Ben Novac owned the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami and was a close associate of Chicago and New York LCN. He applied for a license to operate a casino in the Bahamas in April of 1964 and was denied due to his financial ties to gangsters
-a CI (probably Maniaci) reported on April 3, 1964 that Balistrieri and former capodecina, but current soldier Joe Caminiti had a meeting where they discussed the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD). Balistrieri said he helped get cheif of police Harold Breter into office. Blaistrieri said he felt the MPD was trying to put heat on him by arresting young people who frequented Gallagher's restaurant and they surveilled LCN members. Balistrieri met with inspector Kremsreiter who was the number 3 man in the MPD. Kremsreiter and Balistrieri met at Fazio's and had lunch. At lunch, Balistrieri suggested that the MPD should stay away from his kind and that there are not enough police to be just focusing on him. Balistrieri told Caminiti that he was happy with how it went.
-Frank Ranney is a secretary-treasurer of Teamsters local 200 and is very close to Balistrieri even working together at Atomic Industries, a bubble gum company
-An informant advised on March 24, 1964 that Balistrieri, Frank Ranney, and Joe Caminiti met at Fazio's. The informant said Balistrieri had "some form of domination over Ranney"
-One CI stated that Balistrieri is connected to Jimmy Hoffa and could get a multi-million dollar loan to build a motel in Milwaukee.
-Tony Volpe is connected with Chicago and has access to the money from the welfare and pension fund of the teamster union in Chicago and that many Las Vegas casinos have been financed with the money.
-On April 3, 1964, a CI (or wiretap) reported that Joe Caminiti and Frank Balistrieri had a meeting where they discussed "the disposition of money supplied by the Teamsters to Frank Balistrieri for distribution to some of the candidates for Alderman in the City of Milwaukee." Caminiti told Balistrieri he'll advise the candidates that they are backed by the teamsters.
-During the same meeting Caminiti insuled Robert Kennedy saying he operated a gestapo. They also talked about a speech Congressman Alvin O'Konski gave talking good about Jimmy Hoffa. The Teamsters gave money to O'Konski and Senator Morse (ph) for political purposes
-Caminiti said Robert Kennedy infringes on civil liberties, this was after O'Konski told him about an investigation coming by the DOJ
-Caminiti also said that the Teamsters had trouble getting the poney to pay for Jimmy Hoffa's legal expenses. Out of 35 locals in Wisconsin, 20 wouldn't pass anything in support of paying. Because of this, they decided they would take the money out of the joint counsil, meaning every member will pay .05-.10 cents
-Joe Caminiti told Frank Balistrieri that Frank Ranney said to be careful giving money to Alderman Allen L. Calhoun. This was due to when Calhoun once moved districts, he came into conflict with Al Hass who was close to the Milwaukee LCN. Balistrieri already knew and met with Calhoun and told him that Hass is who they're most loyal too, but they will support whoever won. Balistrieri gave cash to Calhoun as an unreported donation
-Balistrieri gave a donation to Art Else, who's opponent was Henry Maier. Balistrieri gave Else the donation at Gallagher's restaurant.
-Angelo Provinzano was a member of the city service commission who was mobbed up. Balistrieri gave money to Provinzano who then donated money to mob backed candidates. Provinzano donated $995 to mayor Henry Maier. Provinzano also was used in the past to get Italians in positions in the city government and police department. Informant said Provinzano wasn't made
-On April 17, 1964, Dominic Frinzi (mob attorney) was going to run for governor and the mafia backed him. Frinzi himself wasn't confident he could win, but it would give him publicity which he could later use to become a judge
-Anthony Biernat was found buried in a cellar of an abandoned farm sprinkled with lime, but it wasn't the right kind which would disintegrate a body
-Frank Balistrieri partly owns The Pitch Specialty Co. Balistrieri's relative Peter Picciuro operated the business. His father John Picciuro also has a piece or co-owns it.
-Carl Dentice has a jukebox operation in his name for Frank Balistrieri
-Sam Dentice got a jukebox license under his name for Balistrieri
-Peter Sciotino's bakery was targeted in a bombing because of Balistrieri's shakedown campaign. Sciortino was personally connected to Joe Bonanno in some way and ended up not having to pay. Sciortino himself wasn't a LCN member
-Balistrieri's shakedown campaign began in the summer of 1962 with Joseph Gurera and Buster Balestrere shaking businessmen and gamblers down. Some people did resist so Balistrieri wanted to send a message. They were going to kill either Bill Cole or Bobby Pick, but when LE found out they stopped trying.
-An informant though Tony LaRosa might be killed because it was said the Milwaukee family heard he gave information to LE
-In may of 1964, an informant said that Steve DeSalvo and Frank Stelloh now operated as musclemen for Balistrieri. They even planned to murder someone who the informant didn't know.
-The informant thought the murder target may have been Izzy Tocco who was a booker for Sam Cefalu and got in trouble, but the informant thought that this would be too little a reason to murder someone
-A different informant supplied information suggesting the murder target may be Joe Beck. Beck was making complaints against the Continental Sales Co. Balistrieri made comments to the acting manager Gus Chiaverotti where he expressed his anger against Beck.
-An informant advised on April 10, 1964 that he heard a story about a Milwaukee gangster being offered $5,000 by the Chicago LCN "to make a hit" on a prominent businessman who was made. The reasoning was because the man owed the Chicago family between $18,000-$20,000. The man either stole the money or bet and lost the outfit's money

2023.06.06 03:08 mablej Practical advice desperately needed about schizophrenic violent ex-partner.

This is a long background story, but I think that context is necessary. Thank you so much if you take the time to read.
It has been over for several months, and I've been staying at my parents' house. I am mostly moved out from our previously shared house, aside from my beloved huge book collection and record collection.
He almost killed me (strangulation) many times, lots of ER visits, lots of police asking me to tell the truth. Why did I lie? I don't know.
I'm a teacher, and got covid in March 2020. I met him the night my school had closed, a friend of a friend. We hooked up, stayed at my friend's that night, and the next day he had to go feed his cat. I went with him, and then lock down happened. Around the same time, I showed symptoms of covid. Badly. School had no masks, you couldnt buy hand sanitizer, 33 first graders. My dad is a doctor and came over a few times in a hazmat suit to take my vitals. I slept about 20 hours a day for 3 months. My parents thought I was dying. My o2 was 87-89, and my heart was damaged (160 hr, sleeping). I couldn't go home bc my dad was a first responder, and my partner actually took very nice care of me. We moved into an apartment together in August 2020.
Gradual signs of abuse, Spyware on my phone, cameras everywhere, and he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2021. Of course, it just got worse, really just in the stereotypical ways. I was still quite weak and thankful and dependent and increasing emotionally attached.
After he threw me through a glass window door, I left. April 2023. I don't know if I can revisit all of the torture and abuse I endured leading up to this.. Peeing on my graded student final essays, contacting everyone I have ever known and harassing them, dumping bags of moldy garbage on my head while I was leaving for work, missing work because of black eyes and overnight ER visits, the constant pit in my stomach when my classroom phone rang because he'd harass me there, hiding my car keys when i was going to work. I lost 2 jobs because of him, but only had brief periods of unemployment. I barely spend any money, and I'm terrible at personal finance. I just always had enough because I almost always have a job and have 10k or more in savings (in my checking account, which becomes important further down).
The reason I included the covid bit is I guess to say that my brain really wasn't working. I wish more than anything that I told the hospital staff. The police were all men and I don't know, I didn't want to go to a trial or something, I don't even know, maybe I didn't want to uproot my life or start over or maybe I was scared of retaliation if nothing ended up happening or maybe I loved him and didn't want to ruin his life.
I just have a few questions.
  1. He managed my finances, and said he had set up a savings account for me. I didn't look much into it because I, for some reason, trusted him. He had been sending almost all my money to himself with cashapp and buying himself doordash while I was working. About 20k over 3 years. He also paid the rent, but he insisted, and I was under the impression he was making 3x as much as a remote worker as a lead software developer. Is that money just gone? I don't know what information he has stored. How do I start over financially? What do I need to shut down or close? He is way more tech-savvy and collects bits of information and memorizes numbers and information easily.
  2. He is not taking his anti-psychotic meds and messages me a lot late at night, or calls hundreds of times, saying that he's going to burn my books and then hang himself if I don't bring him food or water (our city water has lead). He always says he is broke and going into DKA (T1 diabetic). And it would all be my fault. Could I be somehow held legally responsible for this, if he did die?
  3. Near the end, he began to show serious violent tendencies towards others. He has "blackouts" (not substance-induced). His eyes change. A friend was over, and the friend made a dumb sexual joke about me, as we were all just just goofing around. My partner got up, went to the kitchen, in a daze, got this huge sledgehammer, and began walking, like sleepwalking, towards our friend. I got him snapped out. Similar things on 2 other occasions. I truly truly truly think he is going to kill someone. Is there ANYTHING I can do? Like I'm watching him unravel and get worse over 3 years. I think it's too late to pursue charges from my injuries, at least that's the impression I was left with. I did eventually start gathering photographic and video evidence towards the end of the relationship.
  4. Least importantly, I really want my books and records back. Is there any way to force him to leave the house for 2 hours so my family and friends and I can grab the rest of my things?
Thank you so much if you made it through this.

2023.06.06 02:57 IncomeJumpy6504 2nd BS in computer science?

I am a 22f who graduated from a state university with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Political Science a little over a year ago. I am facing difficulties in finding a job in my field and currently hold a 40k/year job. Living in a highly expensive city, I have been struggling to save money. I wonder if it is too early to consider changing my career path by returning to school. There is a state university nearby that offers a joint BS/MS program in Computer Science, which seems like an opportunity to obtain two degrees for the price of one. It is important to note that I do not have any financial support from my parents, and I already have 20k in student loans. Ideally, I would like to cover half of the expenses for this new academic venture from my own funds and the remaining portion through a student loan. What are your thoughts and advice on this matter?
edit: I ended up pursing Sociology because I wanted to do research. I’ve considered Masters in Sociology or Data Science as well. I’m just extremely indecisive and at a job that I do not like.

2023.06.06 02:47 s317sv17vnv A personal victory today!

While I was taking a walk around my neighborhood today for some exercise, I decided to pop into the public library. I picked up one of the local newspapers and sat down for a moment to read it, and immediately an article caught my eye that a new branch of my favorite supermarket chain would be opening for business nearby (the current closest one is maybe 20 minutes away driving without traffic) It talked about how it would help the community as the previous supermarket in the area had closed back in 2021 leaving residents to have to trek farther out (aka driving) to do their grocery shopping.
The new supermarket won't be the closest one to me (I can walk to one from a different chain that I don't like as much), but it will be way more convenient as it's location is right along my bike route home from work, and it's also going to be in the same shopping center as my favorite takeout spot (for their excellent customer service in making curbside pickup by bike the easiest thing ever). The shopping center itself is actually quite pleasant as there are a lot of dedicated pedestrian plaza areas with outdoor seating and tables, bike racks, a nearby bus hub, and plenty of green space to make it easy to ignore that it's right next to a highway service road. Sure the parking lot gets full, but at least this shopping center is equitably accessible to pretty much every other common mode of transport.
My mom and my aunt also really like this supermarket chain, so I immediately told them the news too. They both drive for errands (I don't blame older folks for being too scared to ride bikes in the streets here), so I did warn them that the traffic around that shopping center would probably become a nightmare with the new addition (the lot entrance/exit is right on the aforementioned service road), especially since they'd have to remove some parking spaces to place cart corrals. Since it's two miles away for us, my mom said she would be fine with just having me swing by on my way home from work whenever she needs something, which I already do with most of our local errands anyway.
My aunt lives even closer to the supermarket, only half a mile, and her response surprised me. She said "In that case, I can just walk there." My aunt - who is notorious in our family for circling around parking lots that aren't even full because she needs to find a closer spot - recognized that walking would be the most efficient option for her! Or, on days she doesn't feel like walking, her husband commutes to and from the city by bus, so he's also conveniently passing by the shopping center just like I do.
It makes me so happy to know that people I know are listening when I point out all the infrastructure issues around us and are consciously choosing options that don't require getting into a car.

Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card?varies

Hi all,
basically looking to get another travel card. I have the Venture X which has been great since it's basically free after the travle credit + annual reward of 10k points which I have taken advantage of.
I think I want something with a bit more tangible perks for travel ( i like the idea of lounges, taking advantage of stuff at the airport / staying accomadations, etc)
I travel domestically for vacation / leisure would say 3-4 times a year or so, maybe one international trip per year
So I'm juggling between the CSR / trifecta and the Amex. in my mind here's the pros and cons:
Chase Pros:
Cons:
Amex plat Pros * has centurion lounges at airports I frequent (California / LAS)
Cons * point accumulation seems bad unless you get the gold but would only help me in my dining category
any recommendations would be great. Thanks!
