2023.03.23 15:13 ladderup08 Weekend trip ideas
Im in Jackson for work and want to spend this weekend exploring MS, and want some suggestions on how to do it alone (30M for context).
I really want to chill in a beautiful bookstore/cafe/outdoor spot and get some reading done, do some hiking/swimming if possible, and meet people - this last one is hard bc I dont drink. Would love any literary events, open mics, etc. I will do a couple of historic site visits but lower on my list.
Right now I'm considering driving up to Oxford for 1-2 days, maybe Tupelo, and then Tishomongo Park. Any suggestions or ideas on what to do, where to visit and where to stay?

2023.03.23 13:54 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: D.A.-Break by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (03/22/23)
"Our students deserve better than these fraudulent products and we cannot allow almonds or soy to be passed off as dairy." - Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) describing America’s most-pressing FRAUD!!! One McGrift, Over Easy
There’s still no movement on the multiple-indictment front facing disgraced former president Donald Trump, and in the words of Carrie Bradshaw, I couldn’t help but wonder…did ole’ Donny wriggle his way out of legal accountability again?
- Communications dating back five years between adult film actress Stormy Daniels and one of Trump’s current attorneys, Joe Tacopina, have been turned over to the Manhattan district attorney’s office. In 2018, Daniels was seeking representation and spoke with Tacopina and others at his firm, including about details related to her allegations against Trump, according to her current attorney. If Daniels disclosed confidential information pertaining to her case to Tacopina while vetting him to be her prospective lawyer, that could prohibit him from representing Trump in this case altogether.
- Tacopina denies that there is a conflict of interest, and further says he never met with or spoke to Daniels, but the fact that she has already turned their communications over to the DA suggests that there is, in fact, something there. Trump hasn’t even been indicted, and already his legal team looks unprepared and disorganized.
- The grand jury presiding over the hush-money case was told by prosecutors not to come in on Wednesday, dashing our collective anticipation that Trump may be indicted today. But the district attorney reportedly plans to convene the grand jury again on Thursday, at least according to some reports. A longer pause in the grand jury’s activity would likely delay the vote and possible indictment into next week at the earliest.
Moving on to a different case and a different lawyer (hard to keep track of all of the crimes sometimes!)... - A federal appeals court ruled that one of Trump’s other lawyers in the “allegedly” (wink) stolen documents case, Evan Corcoran, must provide evidence to prosecutors in the form of notes, transcripts, etc. related to the case that would ordinarily be protected by attorney-client privilege, because Trump may have used Corcoran’s legal services to facilitate obstruction of justice. Wow! Always one to diversify his grift portfolio, Trump raised $1.5 million in contributions after he announced on Truth Social that he expected to be indicted on Tuesday.
- One thing Trump doesn’t seem to have going for him this time around, however, is his usual hordes of frothing supporters ready to commit violence on his behalf. Even the far-right chuds who showed up in droves on January 6 have been reluctant to meet the former president’s calls for mass protests. (Strange what happens when you tell people to riot, they riot, they all go to jail, and you walk away.) The alt-right message boards have been buzzing with theories that protests might be “traps” set by federal law enforcement, and even apart from that, there seems to be little appetite for organized pro-Trump action. A demonstration on Monday organized by the New York Young Repubican Club outside of the Manhattan court where Trump’s arraignment would take place if indicted drew less than 50 people, and anti-Trump counter-protesters far outnumbered them.
Trump and his multi-pronged legal team, spanning multiple unrelated cases, are in total disarray, and yet Trump still seems to be squeezing a dollar out of a bad situation and has not yet found himself on the wrong end of an indictment. In his flop era and still scheming! If he weren’t such an irredeemable piece of shit we would almost be impressed.
Under The Radar
Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) unveiled a new unit of election police to harass voters and election workers in the name of “election integrity.” But the first string of cases brought by prosecutors related to supposed election fraud disproportionately flopped, because, well, election fraud is mostly nonexistent according to countless studies and all available data, no matter how many times Republicans try to fearmonger with it, and so the charges were ginned up. (Perhaps Donald Trump can add this to his
rolling, scathing critique of DeSantis’s record?) Now, a new law in the Sunshine State allows prosecutors to pursue more election-related cases, an overt attempt to sidestep judicial scrutiny of sham voter prosecutions. What’s more, other red states are following in DeSantis’s footsteps at an alarming rate. Lawmakers in 20 states have introduced at least 57 bills targeting elections, and
four Republican-led states are working to add new police agencies with the specific purpose of targeting “voter fraud.” Making the same false claim over and over again doesn’t make it true, you freaks!
What Else?
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates one-quarter of a percentage point today, and Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that increases should be nearing an end. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and his administration are moving to expand Florida’s infuriating “Don’t Say Gay” law to all school grades, in what is no doubt a sick bid for attention as he continues his shadow presidential campaign.
Speaking of which, a former Florida Republican lawmaker named Joseph Harding, who sponsored the “Don’t Say Gay” law, pleaded guilty to committing $150,000 in wire fraud intended for COVID-19 relief. Eight prominent celebrities including Lindsay Lohan, Jake Paul, Ne-Yo and Lil Yachty, were charged by the SEC as part of a cryptocurrency fraud scheme for not disclosing that they were paid to promote certain brands of cryptocurrency. Democrats are out-fundraising Republicans by…a lot, so Republicans are trying to recruit candidates who are already super rich. If this means more Dr. Oz lookalikes who will humiliate themselves on the campaign trail, we’re in!
What In The World?
Lawmakers in Uganda passed some of the world’s most punitive anti-gay legislation on Tuesday. The new laws, which make some crimes punishable by death and others subject to up to life imprisonment, is evidence of a further crackdown on LGBTQ+ people in the country, where same-sex relations were already illegal. Merely identifying as LGBTQ+ would subject Ugandans to up to 20 years in prison. The laws target other activities as well, including a ban on “promoting and abetting homosexuality” and “conspiracy to engage in homosexuality.” The bill also defines a charge of “aggravated homosexuality” as a confusingly broad term encompassing non-consensual sex acts against children, blood relatives, or people with disabilities. (Pretty sure the term they were looking for is just…“rape”?) LGBT advocates say that the law could lead to mass arrests of queer people and mob violence against them, which could also lead to an epidemic of suicides. Human-rights groups have roundly condemned the legislation and
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the laws, “would undermine fundamental human rights of all Ugandans and could reverse gains in the fight against HIV/AIDS.”

2023.03.22 20:10 librarycircclerk Help me decide what book to read by an author whose last name starts with F.
I'm participating in a Read Across the Alphabet challenge and I've narrowed down my choices for "F" to three books I've long had on my radar but never gotten to.
My choices are Faulkner- As I Lay Dying, Ferrante- My Brilliant Friend and Follet- The Pillars of the Earth. I have read some Faulkner short stories, but other than that I've no history with any of the authors involved.
For insight into my tastes: my all-time favorite books include Carroll's Alice Books, Le Guin's The Dispossessed, Butler's Parable of the SoweTalents, Garnett's Lady Into Fox, Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, short stories by Borges, Calvino and Kafka, Nabokov's Pale Fire, Sachar's Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and Austen's Persuasion. My favorite book I've read so far this year has been Babel by RF Kuang.

2023.03.22 17:32 Samowarrior SPC NOAA Day 3 convective outlook. Spring has sprung. Also note on Thursday a high risk of hail for Oklahoma.
| Day 3 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0234 AM CDT Wed Mar 22 2023 Valid 241200Z - 251200Z ...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS EASTERN LOUISIANA...SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS...AND WESTERN MISSISSIPPI... ...SUMMARY... Supercell thunderstorms capable of all severe hazards, including strong tornadoes, are possible across the Lower Mississippi Valley on Friday. ...Synopsis... The upper pattern early Friday morning will likely be characterized by broad troughing across the western CONUS and subtropical ridging centered over the Straits of Florida. Enhanced mid-level flow will extend throughout western and southern periphery of the upper trough and then throughout the northwestern periphery of the subtropical ridge. A low-amplitude shortwave trough is forecast to move from the base of the upper trough quickly eastward across the southern Plains throughout the day, and then more northeastward across the Mid-South overnight. Strong mid-level flow (i.e. 100 kt at 500-mb) will accompany this shortwave, spreading across TX into the Mid-South. The surface pattern preceding this shortwave trough is expected to feature a low over north TX early Friday, with a cold front extending southward from this low into the TX Hill Country and a stationary front extending northeastward into the Middle OH Valley. This low is forecast to move northeastward throughout the day, while deepening significantly. ...Lower MS Valley... Expectation is for a broad area of upper 60s dewpoints to be in place from east TX across the Lower MS Valley, ahead of the surface low and associated front. Cloud cover may temper daytime heating, but afternoon temperatures will likely still reach the 80s, contributing to moderate buoyancy across much of the region. In addition to this buoyancy, moderate mid-level flow atop strengthening low-level flow (supported by the maturing cyclone ahead of the approaching shortwave trough) will contribute to long hodographs with substantial low-level magnitude and veering. As a result, the environment will be very favorable for supercells. Current expectation is for storms to develop during the afternoon over southwest AR and western LA (perhaps as far west as east TX). This development should occur ahead of the cold front within the open warm sector, maturing as it moves eastward across the Lower MS Valley. A discrete supercell mode is anticipated initially, with all severe hazards possible, including strong tornadoes. Upscale growth into a convective line is anticipated after this initially discrete mode, with the line pushing eastward across MS and AL overnight. ...Mid MS Valley... Despite less buoyancy that areas farther south, augmented forcing for ascent close to the surface low could result in bowing line segments capable of damaging wind gusts and embedded tornadoes Friday afternoon through Friday evening. ..Mosier.. 03/22/2023 CLICK TO GET WUUS03 PTSDY3 PRODUCT NOTE: THE NEXT DAY 3 OUTLOOK IS SCHEDULED BY 0730Z CURRENT UTC TIME: 1629Z (11:29AM), RELOAD THIS PAGE TO UPDATE THE TIME submitted by Samowarrior to tornado [link] [comments] |

Anyway, this is a bit of a weird review for me because I actually have experience playing against a few of these guys (Krawi, Cjay, and Lyar) in official Collegiate matches, so that's cool. So let's take a look at the Valiant (spoiler: they suck!)
I've seen a lot of Krawi apologists around here lately and I'm not really sure why that's the case. I've never been all that impressed by him in Contenders; while he obviously doesn't stack up against top NA off-tanks like Coluge or Hawk, I also don't think he's all that high up in the second tier with players like False and even Vulcan. I was confused when Paris picked him up last season and I'm a bit let down that Valiant decided to go with him for 2023. Despite his decent run with Wisp in Pro-Am qualifiers he just feels unimpressive, not to mention that he is completely unproved on Main Tank characters. Weird and uninspiring pickup.
For the Valiant supports, they've decided to go with Cjay and Lyar. I'm not going to include Paintbrush in this section since it seems like he'll be filling the "John from Accounting" role on this team as a sixth player in name only. Cjay... well we know what he's done. He's a decent player but not one that stacks up with most other Flex Supports in the West Region, but that may not even be the issue. Cjay jumped ship on Odyssey just hours before Pro-Am roster lock to join Saints, and now he's abandoned Saints just a few days before Pro-Am group stage to play for Valiant. Team dynamics aren't something I talk about that much in these threads but it's a legitimate question here: as a teammate, how much trust do you put in a player who literally sabotaged a former team just around a month ago. It's something to consider. Additionally, the Valiant have Lyar. I have a personal vendetta against this guy because he was toxic in collegiate match chat once, but I also can't deny that he's a fairly underrated player. I do think this guy has flown a bit under the radar in contenders, however, I've historically been impressed by his Flex Support play. It'll be bit disappointing if he's in Main Support jail for the whole season but at least he does have experience on the role.
Finally there's the DPS, and this is probably the most redeeming part of the team. NOS is a very solid journeyman DPS player who's been in the contenders scene for a while. I'd say he's probably a step above some of the other bottom-tier Flex DPS in the league right now such as Malthel and Seicoe. A solid player who can make some plays when needed, but maybe not quite OWL level. Rounding out the roster, the Valiant's crowning jewel is Seeker. I was kind of shocked to see he didn't get picked up earlier in the offseason, especially when teams like New York, Washington, and London were looking at the hitscan market. Seeker came out swinging after being signed midseason by the Boston Uprising, easily outperforming Victoria. Seeker has a ton of potential and I'm honestly a bit sad to see him on a team like this that will very likely underperform. I do hope he can do well enough to get a starting spot somewhere better next season.
As far as last-minute rosters go, it's not too shabby, but also nothing special. This team will be competitive with the other bottom-tier rosters and that's about it. I'd also err on the side of caution when predicting in favor of this team due to rumors that they were pressured to throw by their management last year. LGE is no longer running things but given the history of the org I really don't trust them all that much.

"Paying people not to talk about things, hush money, is ordinary in modern America." - Tucker Carlson, #1 anchor on the official Hush Money Network Chairmen Of The Deplored
Looks like there’s no indictment today. Aw, drat. But that hasn’t stopped the GOP from unleashing a firestorm of lies and invective to protect their golden goose.
- Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lindsey Graham warned that arresting disgraced former president Donald Trump would “blow up our country,” and “is a bunch of B.S.” Without having the foggiest idea what the first Trump indictment might include, Graham also claimed that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is a “George Soros-backed prosecutor,” because his 2021 election campaign was partially funded by Color of Change PAC. They love to pull out George Soros—sorry, (((George))) (((Soros)))—when the going gets tough!
- House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also downplayed the allegations against Trump and called the D.A.’s investigation “just political.” Following comments like the ones from McCarthy and Graham, on top of yesterday’s conspiracy theory-ridden, threatening letter to Bragg from three House GOP chairmen, demanding Bragg sit for sworn testimony, Bragg issued a statement today insisting that he and his office “will not be intimidated by attempts to undermine the justice process, nor will we let baseless accusations deter us from fairly applying the law.”
- By sheer coincidence, definitely having nothing to do with the GOP becoming an overtly violent party, someone called a bomb threat into a New York City courthouse just as a lower Manhattan judge was about to start proceedings in New York Attorney General Letitia James’s unrelated financial-fraud lawsuit against Donald Trump. The courthouse was temporarily closed and searched, after which it was determined that the threat was unfounded. NYPD announced it had increased uniformed presence throughout the city but stressed that there were “no credible threats,” at this time, though they remained prepared for protests and counterprotests.
No amount of weak protests from Trump’s gang of allies will help him outrun the law, but the mainstream media and even powerful elected politicians also seem to have learned nothing from the past seven years. - As Trump nears criminal indictment, the political hand wringing about whether or not this will be the moment the GOP finally breaks with the former president is in full effect. Are we really doing this again? For the one-thousandth time? If the past seven years have taught us anything it’s that there’s no “breaking point” when the Republican Party will say enough is enough, and expel him from the party, especially if it would require caving to the libs. (If Trump ever proposed increasing taxes, though…)
- In fact, much of the discourse surrounding Trump’s looming indictment(s) feels like deja vu. The Democratic Party’s resident lump of coal, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), said he thought an indictment would “just embolden” Trump and could have “the reverse effect of what people might be thinking.” Wow, we’ve never heard that one before, Joe! Truly groundbreaking stuff. As with all of his myriad crimes, the fact that Trump could invariably use justified legal consequences as a fundraising tool is not a good reason not to prosecute him! This isn’t difficult!
When it comes to Trump, how he handles accountability, and how the Republican Party then handles him, we’ve seen all of this before. Sarah Longwell, a vocal GOP critic of Trump and Founder of the Republican Accountability Project
said that if Republicans fail to break with the malignant Trump at a time like this, “they’ll have no one to blame but themselves when Trump is the nominee again.”
Sound’s a lot like Lindsey Graham’s famous May 2016 tweet “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…and we will deserve it,” doesn’t it? And we all know what happened next.

Fox News producer Abby Grossberg alleged in a new lawsuit that Fox lawyers tried to get her to take the fall for the network’s repeated airing of conspiracy theories about Dominion Voting Systems by coercing her into giving misleading testimony in the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit. Grossberg alleges that Fox News lawyers coached her and she felt “pressured not to name names or implicate others, in particular prominent male on-air personalities and Fox News executives.” Both Fox and Dominion presented their arguments before Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis.
The Judge appeared to be skeptical of Fox’s arguments that they were reporting on Dominion neutrally and do not meet the criteria for “actual malice”, for good fucking reason! Davis said, “To me, it doesn’t seem intellectually honest that you apply actual malice and say there’s neutral reporting privilege…How can you be neutral if you’re knowingly doing false things?” Dominion’s lawyers now have presented ample internal Fox communications that prove the network repeatedly spread slanderous falsehoods and hosted guests who did the same out of fear of losing viewers to its far-right competitors like Newsmax.
What Else?
DOJ prosecutors in the special counsel’s office have procured “compelling” preliminary evidence that disgraced former president Trump knowingly, intentionally misled his own attorneys about his personal retention of classified White House materials. A new United Nations report estimates that 43,000 Somalians died last year in the country’s longest drought on record, half of whom are estimated to have been children. A federal judge ruled against Donald Trump on Monday in his efforts to keep key evidence out of his civil rape trial brought by former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll. The city of Torrance, CA, has paid a man in Redondo Beach $750,000 after two police officers allegedly spray-painted a swastika inside his car in 2020. An investigation of the incident led to the discovery of rampant racism and homophobia among Torrance police officers, resulting in prosecutors dismissing dozens of felony cases.
The Georgia state senate passed SB 140 today, which denies transgender youth gender-affirming care and imposes harsh penalties on doctors who attempt to provide such care. The bill now heads to Gov. Brian Kemp for a hateful signature.
Republican Chairman of the House Oversight Committee James Comer has gone two-feet-in on his self-appointed role to investigate every unhinged claim about president Biden and his family, even going so far as to lament that the president’s late son Beau was never investigated. Just a uniquely horrible guy!
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in court today (NOT for the jade eggs you put in your vagina, this time) in response to a lawsuit filed by a 76-year-old retired optometrist who claims Paltrow violently crashed into him while skiing in 2016. Three former employees of a Virginia mental hospital in Virginia were arrested and charged with second-degree murder last Thursday over the death of a Black man who was transported to the facility from jail earlier this month, and the videotape of the incident was released today. European Union antitrust regulators raided the Austrian energy company Red Bull on the suspicion that the company is abusing its dominant market share. What In The World?
Bonner General Health hospital in Sandpoint, ID, announced on Friday that it will no longer provide labor, delivery, and a host of other obstetrician services, citing increasing criminalization of physicians and the inability to retain pediatricians as major contributing factors. Bonner General is the only hospital in a 50-mile radius, and the residents of Sandpoint will now be forced to travel for hours to receive this basic and essential care. The hospital’s leadership made a statement saying that the decision to eliminate the obstetrics unit came from the “political climate” in Idaho, which has caused “highly respected, talented physicians” to leave the state entirely. They continued, “The Idaho legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care.” The
Dobbs decision legalized a state ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, and Idaho is one of six states that prosecutes doctors for providing the procedure. The Idaho legislature is also terminating its maternal mortality review committee.

Millions of Americans stood up to say no to this climate bomb, putting tremendous pressure on the White House, but Biden approved this project and derailed his own climate goals.
This fight is not in vain and not over. Earthjustice is now taking this fight to the courts.
