A Modest Proposal To Solve The Kashmir Problem

2023.03.24 06:44 Meaning-Plenty A Modest Proposal To Solve The Kashmir Problem

I am not Bal Gangadhar Tilak, that savant of plate tectonics who formulated a Unified Field Theory of India when he reconciled the … oh let’s call it … fact of India being the birthplace of humanity with the equally muscular fact of only cold places producing intelligence by his earth-shattering (literally) discovery that India as a whole moved up to the North Pole where Manu was placed on it, and then made a return journey to the tropics and thus was born the greatest civilization the world will ever know.
I am not one of the great thinkers this land seems to be producing at an ever-accelerating pace, who have been able to decipher that Christianity is basically Krishna-neeti (Krishna’s policy) and Kaaba (Mecca) is a Hindu temple, and how India invented nuclear weapons (and called them Brahmastra) and diplomacy (krisna-neeting it Chanakya neeti). With these twain weapons shall India destroy and isolate Pakistan!
Hell, I am not even Narendra Damodar Das Modi, who cut through the fog of Chinese herbal teas and PM2.5 to ascertain that genetic science and plastic surgery was born in Ancient India as well, proof being the in vitro birth of Karan in Mahabharat and the replacement of the human head of Lord Ganesh with an elephant head, respectively.
No, sadly, I am a mere mleccha from a cold place and while that might give the Gangadhar a headache (Can I be intelligent?), it means I can only aspire to the lofty high these visionaries have attained.
So I dare not present grand facts about huge things. I will only make a tiny proposal about a small place.
Kashmir has been an eyesore on India’s body politic for the last 72 years. The average life expectancy in India is only 68.5 years, so there is a danger the eyesore might become congenital. The latest attack on Indian armed forces at Lithpur in District Pulwoam, where a Kashmiri suicide bomber killed more than forty Indian soldiers, can become India’s “enough is enough” moment. While randomly beating and harassing Kashmiris working or studying in various parts of Bharat is a good beginning, it won’t be enough. After all, if killing more than 80,000 Kashmiris and making about 10,000 of them disappear has not taught them a lesson, what will a few beatings achieve? No, India needs to do more.
This is my cue. Hear me out.
What are the various dimensions of the Kashmir problem?
Well, first of all, there is Pakistan, that bloody old Mamlikat-e-Khudadaad (I don’t even know what that means). They have been brainwashing Kashmiris from across the border while India, which holds the territory through its 700,000 soldiers and an iron-clad administration, has failed to convince Kashmiris about the merits of living in the World’s Largest Democracy. Unfortunately, brainwashing was not invented in Ancient India. Pakistan needs to be made to understand that its wishy-washy attempts to wash away India from Kashmir by brainwashing Kashmiris are mere pipe dreams.
Then there are these ungrateful Kashmiris themselves. I mean how many free and fair elections does India need to conduct in the state for Kashmiris to understand how much it loves them? Do the Kashmiris even realize what a logistic nightmare it is to muzzle every independent voice and put a soldier on every inch of the troubled land before every election so that its freeness and fairness is not called into question? Granted that India has made mistakes in Kashmir in the past; but if Kashmiris can’t forgive India, maybe India needs to find a new way to make its point.
Finally, what about Kashmiri Pandits? Kashmir was their land. It was a Hindu land. According to a Hindu myth, it was satisar, a great lake extending from Vearnag in the southeast to Varmul in the northwest, populated only by Jaludbhav, a rakshas (demon) who had been given the boon of immortality by Brahma himself, as long as he stayed in the water. Then the Pandits came from the banks of Saraswati in Haryana to settle on the banks of the lake (they loved their fish, still do). But Jaludbhav would gobble anyone who went near the lake. So they pleaded with Vishnu to rid them of the demon, and he sent Kashyap Rishi to drain the lake, leaving Jaludbhav vulnerable to Vishnu’s Sudharshan Chakra. Later, the mleccha came and polluted this holy land with their azaans and beef-eating. The holy land needs to be purified and restored to its formal liquid glory.
What if I tell you that my solution will take care of all these dimensions? Talk about single-window clearance! Am I a Modi Bhakt or what?
Ok, so here it goes. India needs to detonate a single thermonuclear device near Uri. Call it Surgical Strike 3.0. Since Uri means “the udder of a cow”, the strike can also be called Gau Raksha 1.0. Whatever the name, it will seal the narrow passage the Jhelum uses to sneak out of Indian-controlled Kashmir into Azad Kashmir. The result: Infiltration of water across the Line of Control will stop. Kashmir’s water will stay in the valley, slowly submerging towns and villages starting from Varmul, Sopore and Bandepur, then Srinagar and Ganderbal, then Pulwoam, Kopwoar, Badgoam, Koalgoam, Shopian, and Islambad, right upto Vearnag. Kashmir will become satisar, in the great Indian tradition of first inventing a legend and then creating it in reality. Kashmiris who are able to swim to safety can then be relocated to various manageable-sized colonies across India or given the option of going to Pakistan.
Varmul is at a height of 1,600 m above the sea level; Vearnag, at 1,850 m; the Baanhaal pass, at 2,832 m; Peer ki Galli, at 3,485 m; Zojila, at 3,485; and Sinthan, at 3,792. So, even after the blast, the blocked passageway, at about 2,600 m, will continue to be the lowest point of exit for the accumulating water. The volume of water that the bowl-shaped vale will be able to retain can be calculated from the formula for shallow domes, as follows:
Surface area of the Kashmir valley = 16,000 km2
Highest point = 2.6 km above sea level (Uri post-Gau Raksha 1.0)
Lowest point = 1.6 km above sea level (Varmul)
Therefore, height (h) of the spherical section = 1 km
Area of a spherical cap = 2 π r h. Here, area = 16,000 km2 and h = 1 km.
Therefore, r = 2,548 km
Volume will be π h2 (3 r – h) / 3; in our case, h = 1 km and r = 2,548 km.
Therefore, the volume of water in satisar will be = 8,000 km3 (approximately) or about 512 billion m3.
The ballpark figure of the flow of Jhelum’s water at Uri is around 4,000 m3 per second, so it will take about 128,000,000 seconds to fill up the satisar. This amounts to about 1,480 days. while that might be enough time to make Pakistan forget Karbala, india does not need to take any chances. So the strategic nuclear blast will have to be combined with the construction of a giant water wheel at the Baanhaal pass to ferry the water, once the satisar fills up, across the Pir Panjal Range and into the River Chenab, from where it can be sent to East Punjab through a network of canals starting at Reasi. It will ensure that Pakistan does not receive a drop of the water flowing in Jhelum and Chenab.
A similar Patisar (“pati” in Kashmir means “backyard” or “behind”) can be created in Ladakh, and its water ferried over the Zojila pass into satisar, from where it can then be transported to the Chenab by the aforementioned channels, or sold to China at a discounted price. In this manner, Pakistan will lose the water of Indus as well.
Thus, all the three goals will be achieved. Kashmir will become India’s forever and ever. Tourism will bloom as more space becomes available for houseboats and shikara rides. There will be an abundant supply of fish as well. The two giant water wheels at Zojila and Baanhal will be among the chief tourist attractions and can also be repurposed or diversified as Ferris wheels. Two, all of Pakistan’s rivers will run dry, its people will die of thirst, and it will have no water with which to brainwash Kashmiris. The icing on the cake will be the fact of Kashmir becoming satisar, the wet dream of so many visionaries.
The writer claims to be a direct descendant of Jaludbhav

2023.03.24 05:37 craftynudesquirrel Build Plate Adhesion Issue Fixed

I have been using an Ender 3 S1 for a little over a year now. The one thing I struggled with was good bed adhesion.
TL;DR - Tempered Glass Composite surface build plate + Adhesive backed magnetic sheet + Glue Stick from the Dollar Store = Excellent part adhesion and ease of removal. Also, what I thought was critical wasn't.
The spring steel build plate they sent with the printer was fine until it wasn't. Basically after a month of constant use, and miss use (I am new at this) part adhesion became an issue. And to quantify constant use I love this hobby and basically keep my printer busy 24/7 (no joke).
Next I bought an off brand spring steel build plate. Again it worked until it didn't. After a month parts wouldn't stick to it. To extend the life I lightly took sand paper to it which worked for a couple more weeks. But soon enough the inevitable occurred.
After some reading I decided to give a tempered glass plate a try. I purchased a Comgrow composite coated tempered glass bed cover. It worked amazingly for about a week. Then once more the parts wouldn't adhere. I tried cleaning like the interwebs said and still no joy. They were also bulky and having two did me little good because of having to use clips to hold them down. So I moved on, the proud owner of two worthless tempered glass beds (or I thought).
After that I decided to try the flexible bed plates made by Ender. They were great and cheap (11 dollars each on Amazon). I could get one to last for a decent time (1 week to 4 weeks) depending on the mistakes I made. Each came with a sheet magnet that I didn't need and after 6 months I had quite a few. The build plates worst quality was that they would actually stick too much if my z-offset was too close to the bed, leading to the covers premature failure but, they were very forgiving when the gap was too much.
I decided to try adhesive on the glass plates. Couldn't hurt right. Searched the interwebs once more looking for the right adhesive. Everyone has an opinion and I seriously doubt they have tried anything but the adhesive they first tried. I say this because of my experience. I got the cheapest glue sticks I could find at General Dollar.
Here is my might as well try it formula.
Comgrow Composite Covered Tempered Glass Bed - twenty dollars.
Generic Stick Glue - 3 dollars for eight sticks
One magnet sheet with adheasive on the back
One bed clamp tightened hand tight (and I only did this just incase after about 10 prints. I probably don't need it.
Directions:
  1. Remove the adhesive backing from the magnetic plate and install it on the back of the tempered glass plate. Try to minimize air bubbles. But if you get some it doesn't affect it at all. BTW the interwebs told me that this wouldn't work. Sometimes the interwebs are wrong.
  2. Put the plate on the printer and add one bed clamp, hand tightened, for good measure.
  3. Coat the bed plate with the glue stick. You can do this cold or hot. Not critical either way.
  4. Print-win.
You won't need to reapply after every print. As a matter of fact when you start having bed adhesion issues you can, touch up the areas with the glue stick. I haven't had to clean the plate yet, using soap and water (the glue is water soluble) but there is a bit of maintenance that I do.
As you reapply a few times you will find that the glue builds up and can actually slightly affect the levelness of the surface. It is minor and I only saw it because of a octoprint bed visualizer plug-in. But this has a simple fix that is actually pretty cool. I use my scraper on the bed to take off the excess glue. After scraping you will notice that the composite surface, which which is made up of a tiny grid pattern, will have held on to the glue in its spaces. Amazingly you can get a few prints after that with no issues and start the whole process over again.
I haven't seen any difference in the adhesion surface on my print either. They have actually improved if anything. With the flexible plates I was getting discoloring on the part even if my z-offset was right.
I have been doing this for a few days now without any major issues. I am still on my first glue stick after many parts (well over 25) and I have only used a quarter of the glue stick.
At first I didn't use a bed clip and the magnet held it in place perfectly. Then I added one to the front. Not to secure the bed during printing, but to secure it when I use the scraper to remove the harder parts.
The parts mostly come off with your hands. The larger ones I have printed needed a little convincing with a scraper to get a corner up. But after that they came right off with just hand pressure. I actually am peeling off the skirt around my print easily with my fingers. In other words, no more scraper battels resulting in plate failure.
https://www.amazon.com/Creality-Upgraded-3D-Platform-235x235x3mm/dp/B07DS2LZF1 - I use the 220mm version but couldn't find it.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Elmer-s-Disappearing-Purple-School-Glue-Sticks-Washable-7g-0-24-oz-4-Count/25862849 - Not exactly what I use but the point is that it isn't really that critical. I went for cheap and water washable.

2023.03.24 04:16 kareylicious Nest Migration Summary - #185

The 185th nest migration happened Wednesday!
[Calgary Nest Map] Direct link (http://bit.ly/YYCNestMap)
Nest Migration start: Mar 15, 5 pm
Next Nest Migration: Mar 29, 5 pm
Nests are as accurate at time of reporting. Please keep in mind that sometimes nests change when certain events begin/end.
The majority of the nest list has been provided by https://www.theraidmap.com/ If you want more pokemon, please consider subscribing.
In order to keep the nest list updated as timely as possible I would kindly request that nest only be reported in top level comments and avoid editing previous posts to include new nests. The easiest way for me to see when the list needs to be updated is to see when I have a notification from reddit and I only receive those on new top level comments. Thank you very much!
Thank you to all our nest reporters! Without you, this wouldn't be possible!
Please keep the following in mind when reporting nests:
Spawn points in nests have a 25% chance to spawn the nest Pokemon. If a nest only has a handful of spawn points it is common to not see any of the nesting Pokemon if you are only at the nest for a short period of time. Due to this please ensure you have spent enough time in a nest before reporting your findings.
Happy hunting!!

2023.03.24 02:17 NorthStarProject Gary William Fisk Case Update

Hi. My name is Friendly Alien, and this was a case covered by a Field Analyst and friend of the North Star Project. I have no idea why AKST or any officials have not updated the information, as this was discovered in August last year... But here's an overview of what we've found and what our unnamed Field Analyst wrote while he was out there:

Crow Pass, Missing Person: Case Report

-FA, "Maketa". N.S.P. (North Star Project)
Background:
A 74-year-old Gary Fisk, Departed on the Crows' pass hike from Girdwood to Eagle river on September 21st, 2021. After a bout of Adverse weather, including snow and high winds, Fisk was never heard from again. Aircraft and mountain rescue crews were unable to locate Fisk or recover a Cadaver. This area is known for avalanches and Blizzards, as are most of the mountains surrounding the Mat-Su Valley during the winter and spring months.
Running theory:
AKST and Rescue crews were unable to locate Mr. Fisk, finding no signs and publishing minimum circumstances regarding his disappearance. However, heavy snowfall likely played a significant role. It was likely causing him to become lost or seek shelter in one of the many Abandoned mines in the area. Trained rescue crews often do not enter Dilapidated mines due to the risk of Poisonous gas, Cave-ins, and/or improperly disposed of ordinances. I and a local guide have Formed the hypothesis that Fisk departed Girdwood, and traveled an Undetermined distance. (will be estimated through interview with AKST) Mr. Fisk was unable to travel further or backtrack due to increasing weather severity, seeking shelter inside the lowest point near his position. Some period of time had passed and an avalanche/or snow had buried the trail or if sheltering in a mine entrance bracing may have failed to cause a cave-in. It is estimated Fisk is likely Deceased due to Exposure and/or starvation
Planned Field Investigation:
Beginning in August 2022, the Investigation will be conducted by Bridger Maketa, Assisted in the field by Nathaniel Caole. Time of departure/ weather conditions and Geological activity will be determined through interview With AKST, NOAA and or Family Members, then be cross-referenced to determine distance traveled. All Underground cavities in the area will be searched, for signs of Fisk, snow coverage, and/or Recent collapse within the past 2 years. If Mr Fisk is Located and ID’d, measurements will be taken of Radiation, gas levels, signs of injury and location. Outcome to be forwarded to family, And AKST.
Screenshot Of Location Of Discovery And Paths.
Investigation outcome:
Aug 18th 2022: our party Departed Girdwood at 12pm, traveling up the lower and upper trails. Multiple slide locations into thick unsearchable foliage were spotted, as well as one of two accessible mine entrances due to time constraints. There were many places to fall including a large canyon on the southern incline towards the summit, which all locations prior to the summit would make recovery unlikely/implausible. We also encountered record rainfall combined with 60mph+ as we crossed by Beaver Glacier. After the descent time had degraded the trail causing us to lose it temporarily. We decided to make camp at the bottom of the valley behind the bluff for wind protection.
Aug 19th 2022: upon departure, we were unable to progress on the lower valley, upon backtracking to enter the trail, we spotted an aluminum rod deep in the brush, No other items seen. We Completed the first river crossing with ease, with the water just above ankles. And continued down trail, checking low areas where a lost person would be attracted towards. A footbridge over a canyon had damaged railing, if someone fell they would be likely non-recoverable, another location shorty after involved a slippery ledge over the canyon. Upon entering the bushwhacking section of the trail we were hindered by a cow and calf (female Moose with calf), refusing to exit the trail in front of us while traveling through tall grass and thick foliage. In 14 miles with an additional 4 in detours we arrived upon the bank of Eagle River. We had immediately noticed water levels were far higher than typical. Much of the trail to the fjord sight was immersed in ice cold glacial water causing us to detour along the higher sections of floodplain. Upon arrival to the fjord sight, we concluded Eagle River was in-cross able. Our choice was either 15 miles of steep muddy slopes followed by a treacherous mountain climb, or to attempt to travel south to cross the headwaters of the lake. Upon choosing to travel the shorter path, the trail dissapeared replaced by rough terrain and thick foliage. We continued for two miles until we were half way around the lake. Upon then we found a piece of Grey pants on the ground, we were surprised someone had been here before us, however 50 feet the terrain was completely impassible, down to the left in an indent, our search took a eventful and solemn turn, as we spotted a bright yellow backpack. A floral water bottle was attached outside, while a lighter lay upon the ground 3 feet away. We searched the bag for ID, eventually identifying it as belonging to Gary Fisk. Being careful to not disturb evidence we left the bag and all other items in position. Noticeably the backpack had a foam pad yet no sleeping bag, a bear canister (food storage canister) had teeth marks upon it, however the yellow bag had not been opened upon discovery. We determined to visually search for a few more minutes, finding a turned over tree with a can of bear spray, which had a bite taken out of it. 20 ft left from the pant leg.
Upon departure we spotted tattered red fabric 50 feet above us on the canyon to our western side.

Photograph Of The Discover Of Fisks' ID
Departure:
The weather quickly declined, resulting in many slips and falls upon our return. Water began flooding the valley, turning most trail sections into flowing streams and deep mud pits. We were determined to return to the summit cabin before dark, due to the danger of climbing at night, and our camping gea fire starting kits becoming waterlogged. We kept moving taking minimum breaks to stave off hypothermia making it 10 miles uphill before the first river crossing. Upon a short discussing we knew our only way was across, as the record flood would continue for weeks. The river had risen to waist height, moving fast enough to send boulders crashing downstream. We found a fjord sight and barely crossed, due to a single trekking pole I became completely wet, and hypothermia quickly set in causing my legs to tense and losing my ability to move.
Aug 20th 2022: We made an emergency camp, utilizing a bivy bag and wet gear. Mr Caole completed the last 2 miles to the cabin to call for help. I was inside the bivy bag unable to move for 12 hours until ANG Hilo arrived, being airlifted to Providence Anchorage with severe hypothermia.
August 21st 2022: AKST and S&R crews traveled to the sight but were unable to find any remains or the clothing we found. Only recovering the backpack and bearspray
Deduction:
The location of Gary Fisk’s campsite being Miles ahead of where S&R crews suspected. From the evidence found the story is assumed to be, Gary departed on September 21st 2021, traveled down to the rear of the summit as weather degraded, continuing downhill to avoid deep snow.
Upon reaching the river crossing a day behind in progress, and wet from slush and snow, Gary traveled quicker and lost the trail to the fjord sight and continued to travel south. The terrain was more and more difficult to pass before finally reaching the dead end beside the lake. Garry was fully hypothermic and had no choice but to make camp and attempt to start a fire, however, as evident from the lighter and attempted fire, he was unsuccessful due to either the loss of dexterity, or the wetness of the area. It is unknown what happened after this, though it is possible that after hypothermia led to the removal of his clothes. Upon hearing the snowmachines used by S&R crews on the eastern lake side. Gary either A: climbed up the Cliff to signal for help, Following death by exposure. Or B: gary attempted to swim across the lake, the 38 degree water immediately causing Cardiac arrest.
Second theory of the nature of presumed death is, Gary, being stalked by a bear and mauled/Buried. This theory is supported by the numerous black and brown bear population in the area, His Bear mace being located 50 feet away from the campsite, with multiple punctures to the can, indicative of large teeth. As well as the torn clothes. (as opposed to neatly removed which is more typical to hypothermia)
However It is more likely a bear was attracted to the Capsacin and removed it from the bag to chew on, and there would have been one or more cadaver remnants from a bear mauling leaving the lack of a body improbable.

NOTE: Please know that we take this seriously and do not mean any of this information to be satire.

2023.03.23 23:01 CALIIDOTO23 Directions to the general area of the first clue

The first paragraph of the poem and additional clues provides the path to the general area of the first clue here. Details Follow.
------------------------------------
Forrest said start at the beginning and 'Begin it' is the first line of the second paragraph. Begin it where warm waters halt sounds like a specific location so you need to know the general area first. You use the first paragraph of the poem along with other available clues to identify the general area where 'warm waters halt' is located. Hints are available in other parts of the poem but use the first paragraph as the primary directional content.
Let's start with the initial well-known clues Forrest provided: In the mountains north of Santa Fe NM, treasure is above 5,000 feet above sea level and below 10,200 feet, at least 8.25 miles north of Santa Fe, 66,000 links north of Santa Fe. Note that 66,000 links is 8.25 miles.
When solving the poem there are a few tricks:
Another trick when using numbers that are found as clues is to use the outer numbers together then the inner number(s) and that was the first thing I noticed with Forrest's clues. 8.25 = 285 and Hwy 285 runs north out of Santa Fe. Head north on 285.
The first paragraph of the poem:
As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.
The first line clearly shows north and east since the last 4 words end with NE,N&E. This fits head north on 285 and the last word 'there'=285. I also noticed that 3 of the 4 lines starts with an 'A'. That could indicate go up and down and the first pass on 285 north out of Santa Fe is Poncha Pass. The A's also hint to the largest town heading to Poncha Pass on 285 (Alamosa). The town once you go over Poncha Pass is Poncha Springs which fits warm waters halt. The word 'hint' is followed by word #21 'of'=5/6 = 215/6 and it is 216 miles from Santa Fe to Poncha Springs CO (check it on google maps). We are now at Poncha Springs.
The 2 rhyming words (bold & old) end 24 (ld=24) each preceded by a o which looks like a 0 (zero) = 240 miles. The first paragraph also contains 25 words and the 24th word is 'and' which is the first word in two of the lines. 240 miles north on 285 from Santa Fe is Buena Vista Colorado exactly (check on Google maps). The poem contains 'marvel gaze' which can mean good views (Buena Vista). The predominant distance line in the poem (Not far,..walk) sums 24 and contains 24's.
Buena Vista is a hint, as you enter Buena Vista, but before getting to the town area you turn right on Hwy 24 (24 again) which fits the overall north east hint. Also, there is an airport is at the intersection of 285 & 24. Turn right on 24, cross the Arkansas river, for a total of 240 miles and you are close to warm waters halt.
240 miles from Santa Fe north on 285 then east on 24 ends here.

-------------------------
Note that there are additional clues which help with this path.. This is the abridged version for Reddit. I will eventually type up the full version as this is the most important clue. Get this wrong and your warm waters halt is wrong therefore every spot following is wrong.

2023.03.23 19:52 Briarche Collecting Sauna Rocks in the Wild

I plan to go hunting for sauna rocks this spring.
Any advice? Any links to rock identification info?
It looks like the standard advice is:
I have seen mixed opinions- Trumpkins notes seems to indicate if they're not quarried from underground they could be contaminated with organic material- although I would expect any organics to burn off in the fire.
I see many people in the community seem happy collecting granite river stones and have had success with them
I understand the best sauna stones are peridotite and olivine, but I believe they are only found underground and need to be mined.

I have a Huum drop, and don't trust the Huum stones to hold up over time after what I've seen on here. I'd like to collect rocks over time and gradually change out the Huum ones.

I know its easier to buy them, but the shipping makes them insanely expensive here.

I have a few places in mind to look. I live on the Canadian shield, which is primarily igneous. This area is covered in rocks leftover from the last glacier. Everything from stones to boulders were deposited across Ontario in the last ice age, and alot of these stones were collected and piled by the first farmers to clear the land.
The landscape centers here also sell colored river rock in the 2-4" range, they are rounded, not sure where they come from but they look like granite.

2023.03.23 19:38 waverlycat Route suggestions for first time backcountry camping, late August?

I'm looking for recommendations for a route that would be appropriate for a beginner backcountry paddler in late August, ideally 2 nights, but could do 3. There will be 2 of us + our dog, and we have a lot of front-country camping experience as well as paddling day-trip experience, but we're new to backcountry. Originally we were hoping to use the Tim Lake Access point, spend 2 nights on Rosebary Lake, and come back, just to keep things simple, but I've heard water levels can make things very difficult in August along Tim River. We'll be coming from North Bay, but we're willing to go pretty much anywhere in the park. Thanks in advance!

2023.03.23 18:34 W0lfpack89 Thorough advice and questions answered for growers.

Hello all.
I was inspired to make this post as I see a lot of people asking the same or similar questions. I have a post in the top 10 of all time on this sub (Thanks for that microgreens community btw) and I've been growing as a business for almost 5 years now, so I get people reaching out to me several times a year to ask questions or pick my brain about things. I love when you do, so please keep reaching out. I'd love to talk with you and help you grow better. That being said, between common issues I see in the posts, and the questions I get from being contacted, I thought I'd compile a list of the biggest things to consider and know when growing microgreens. So let's begin.
  1. Mold or root hairs?
- This is a REALLY common question. The answer lies (mostly) in WHERE you see the little "hairs" coming from. Root hairs are at the base of the stem and go into the soil from the bottom of the plant. Mold will tend to spread from the base of one plant to another, to another, to another. If it is spread out between plants and on the soil: likely mold. If it's coming FROM the plans and going to the soil without spreading, probably root hairs. This picture is a GREAT example. Use google to find more and you'll eventually learn the difference.
  1. What substrate to use?
- This is a REALLY personal decision and the truth is the only answer is: The substrate that works for you is the best substrate. We all have reasons for why we use or don't use what goes into our grow systems. Personally I use soil because my philosophy is simple. Give plants they conditions that they need and get outta the way. Plants grow naturally in soil, so I use soil. It also has a larger margin for error on watering compared to things like coco coir, plus I don't have to hydrate it or break up the blocks that it comes in sometimes. Coco coir however can be cheaper, it's renewable (as opposed to peat moss), is soil free so it's sterile/can be made sterile, and doesn't introduce mold or other pathogens, and MANY growers have fantastic luck with it. Experiment a bit, find what works for you and roll with it. If you run into challenges, change it up. Other common substrates are hemp mats, rock wool, or even hydroponics.
  1. How long should by plants be in blackout?
- Let's first DEFINE blackout. In MOST circumstances, blackout is the period of time after you place seed onto soil and then either stack them, or put another tray or some other kind of opaque surface over them to keep them in the dark. In the case of stacking this is done to create a good seed/soil contact, and helps to give the plants stronger stems, and also helps to remove seed hulls. In the case of putting a dark dome on top to cut out light, this is done to keep the plants in the dark so that they grow higher, it also keeps in moisture to keep plants moist. Some growers even put paper towels over their seeds and mist daily to assist in germination. That all depends on exactly what kind of system you have, but by and large isn't necessary.
- Now to the question at hand, I typically seed my plants every Wednesday afternoon and by Saturday morning if they aren't coming out of blackout I have a problem. This isn't universal though, and every plant is different. Don't adhere to a schedule but respond to how the plants LOOK. This schedule works well for the most popular Micros, but more artisan style micros (I'm lookin you Basil, cilantro, shiso, beets, etc.) may need longer blackout/stacking periods.
  1. How much X to use to help with mold?
- I haven't once used hydrogen peroxide, neem oil, or any other spray or assistant to help with mold and I grow in bagged soil which is one of the most mold prone substrates out there. That being said, every few weeks I will lose 1-5 trays to mold out of the 100+ trays that I grow. So let's say 5/500 trays are mold loss. That's 1% and not worth introducing a solution for in my world. Some loss is inevitable and will happen eventually if you do this long enough. Sometimes it was you, and sometimes you just have bad seed. That being said if you absolutely MUST do something to help with mold, either because it's a massive problem for you, or just for your peace of mind, use about 500 ml of water and about a teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide. ALL THAT BEING SAID, make sure you wash the bigger more mold prone seeds very thoroughly, specifically sunflower, pea, cilantro. I'm sure there's others but those are the ones I grow.
  1. How often to water?
- This one really gets me going. I often see people who have watering "schedules" and if that's the case for you and you make it work awesome. But in my 5 years of growing microgreens, I haven't had a consistent water schedule yet. If you give them X amount of water every day at Y time and it works, then great. But in the winter when it gets dryer, or in the summer when it gets warmer, or the spring when everything is wetter, all of that is probably going to change. Plants don't live by human cycles. So the biggest suggestion I can give on micros is to water when the plants need water. If the soil is wet, but it's time to water on your "schedule" you're setting yourself up for mold and seed rot problems.
  1. How much light should I give them? What kind of lights?
- First, the kinds of lights don't matter that much. I use plain old LED, used to use fluorescent. You don't need fancy grow lights. As for how much light, that, like watering, is a hard question to answer. I've had "lights out time" and I've left lights on 24/7. In my 10-14 day grow cycle, I don't notice much of a difference that's worth worrying about in terms of yield. However, to save on money I do shut off my lights on a timer in the afternoon for about 6 hours a day. I shut them off late afternoon/into the evening as that's when our utility company charges the most. This won't be a make or break decision in your world though.
  1. What kinds of fans should I use?
- This is gonna be a bit controversial maybe but: I don't use fans. I used some for a bit, then turned them off, and didn't have any issues, so I stopped. It was one less thing to have to manage. THAT BEING SAID, if you're having mold issues, or if the room is too hot in the summer AND you're seeing those issues cause you problems, try adding in a fan. What you shouldn't do is, add fans, and add hydrogen peroxide, and soak seeds in peroxide, and...and...and... because likely only one of those things will solve the problem. Try a fan, if that doesn't work try spray, if that doesn't work try a fan AND spray, troubleshoot. But seriously don't over complicate this.
  1. What to do with my leftover trays?
- This is a tricky question. The simple answer is: compost. But that depends on what you're gonna do with that compost and how much you grow. If you don't get that compost above 165 F for about 3 days straight and kill those seeds that didn't germinate, be prepared for volunteer 'whatever you grew for microgreens' everywhere. Ask me how I know.... Recently I've been considering vermicomposting mine. However then comes the problem of scale. I have 100 trays worth of soil every week. That is a couple cubic feed by the time it's over, especially once you add root mass. So on some level you gotta be practical. Also chickens is a great idea if you or your neighbor has any.
  1. How do I clean my trays in between uses?
- I highly recommend sterilizing your trays in between each grow. The way I do this is I take a low PSI pressure washer, spray all the dirt and root material off of them, then dip them into a tank of water with some bleach in it. The ratio is about 1/3 cup per gallon of water.I let them stay in there for about 5 minutes and then they air dry. Sometimes some root matter is left there, or a little dirt. I used to be REALLY picky about that, and I wouldn't use a tray that had ANYTHING left in it, but I tried it once and didn't have any issues, so perfection not an issue.
  1. Business questions.
- There are so many questions that go into whether microgreens is a good business for you. There is almost no way to answer it without knowing SO much more about your life than most people are willing to share on the internet but I'll try and give a few basics.
Q. What licenses do I need to start my business?
A. So there's the right answer and then there's the function answer. The functional answer is that no one is gonna come after you for growing a few trays and selling them to your neighbors. Probably. That being said (and nothing in this post is to be taken as legal advice, I am not a lawyer) every state, city, county, and/or country is going to have different rules. In California I had to get certified by the local ag department, have a sign behind my booth that listed my address, phone number, and the slogan "We grow what we sell", and anything sold had to have that somewhere on the packaging as well. Now that I'm in Idaho, there are literally no rules on the ag side. That being said I have to collect sales tax here where I didn't in California (no tax on self grown ag items, kinda nice) so that adds a level of complexity. But be careful, because then I tried growing wheat grass and sell wheat grass shots as a natural side growth and because it was now considered processed I had to have a full 3 bay sink in my booth per health department. So just call someone and ask before you get yourself in trouble.
Q. Can you actually make money doing microgreens full time?
A. Probably not. I don't say that to discourage you but think about it. There are already years of momentum behind some growers. Customer bases are already established and have people they like to go to. This isn't to say don't try, it's to say that it's not as easy as grow a tray and build a website. It's work. It takes time. Once your systems are dialed in it gets easier, and once you're confident in your customer base you'll flow into it, but that can take years. I can do about $1,000-$1,500 a week in microgreens at my farmers market with about 150 other vendors and ZERO other micros growers. I'm lucky though, and you may not be given your area and saturation. So can you make money? Yes are you likely to make money? Not unless you're willing to grind it out and put in the WORK.
Q. What's a good price point for X, Y, Z micro?
A. There is no way to answer that for you. You have to do the math, figure out the market in your area, not to mention determining what your costs are and how much your time is worth. You can do the market research by calling micros growers and asking for a price sheet, browse their websites, call chefs and flat out ask what they're paying for a given microgreen. Visit farmers markets and see what they're charging for them etc. Generally speaking though $5/8oz volume is a decent starting point. Go up or down by a bit based on your market and have bulk incentives (Mine is 1 for $5 3 for $12). For your input costs figure out how much seed you use per tray, then how much that much seed would cost, figure out how much substrate you use, and then what your time is worth. If you want to get REAL nitty gritty calculate electric and water too. I don't though.
Q. What microgreens should I grow to make money?
A. As per the question before this, it depends on what your chefs and customers want. I've had chefs that ONLY want Radish. I've had others that ONLY want Amaranth. Some want a salad mix, some want a little of everything. Some want something that I don't even grow so now I have to figure out if I can even grow it in my system. That being said: there are a few microgreens that I've found to be fairly standard. Those are: PEA SUNFLOWER SALAD MIX. What salad mix? Doesn't seem to matter. Make some kind of salad mix with somethin and it usually does well, just be prepared to sell it at volume for cheap. But it's my single best selling item
OTHER TIPS AND TRICKS
I see SO SO SO SO many people with such complex systems, they measure out specific weights of seed, then they seed, then add a paper towel, and then mist every day, then they blackout, then they put it on a shelf with fans for each level, then they measure out specific amounts of water, then they...then they...then they....and that spells one thing to me: burn out. If that's you and you enjoy it: AWESOME I'm taking nothing away from your success, I'm glad it works. All I'm saying is 7/10 things that I used to do when I was starting out, excited, and watching 100 microgreen YouTube videos a day, I eventually realized had little to no effect. I lose a tray here and there due to a few issues. But in my world I'd rather have a little bit of tray loss than have to manage 7 other systems to prevent that little bit of loss. Time is an important factor in this from a business perspective, and an enjoyment one too.
Phew, that was longer than I thought it would be.
I sincerely hope you found this helpful and know that I thoroughly enjoyed writing it. Let me know if I missed anything and I'll add it in as I find time. See you in the comments.
Way to grow everyone.
-Josh

2023.03.23 18:26 wowsuchketo Successful maintenance of goal weight for 3 months with MacroFactor

Since starting losing weight I always found maintenance phases really difficult.
I was apprehensive about longer term maintenance after reaching my goal weight at Christmas (3 months ago), and made a plan to do a very controlled diet break until Spring, with regular re-assessments of how it was going.
Anyone like me who has found longer term maintenance a challenge, I want to give you some encouragement from the future and tell you how helpful MacroFactor has been for giving me the confidence to move from the beginning of maintenance three months ago, to a point now where I have stopped tracking (as of this week, so it’s still new) and feel ready to progress to other non weight-based goals.
By the way when I say ‘stop tracking’ I don’t mean go crazy and eat all the ice cream, quite the opposite. I feel like I’ve been able to relearn portion sizes and which foods suit my metabolism, without needing to run it through the app. This feels like a miracle.
I still have MacroFactor as a safety net, knowing that I could restart tracking, but I am feeling like I might not even renew my annual subscription. I see this a huge endorsement, that it has been so successful that I no longer need it! I had planned to progress off the app and into the wild by October this year (which would be 2 years of weight management), but - touch wood - I think I can do it sooner.
I’m female 5’7 moderately active, don’t lift.
Sometimes I confess I feel my voice counts for a little less in the weight loss space as I had not yet reached overweight when I decided to do something about my creeping weight gain. But I managed to lose approx 15-16% of my body weight getting down to very lean. I possibly reached a weight below my natural set point range, but I wanted wiggle room to allow some natural regain from water weight, muscle glycogen and intestinal volume.
The first two months after reaching my goal weight I took a controlled diet break and set my target to maintain, adhering to the targets as faithfully as I did during weight loss (which is to say imperfectly, but trying!).
I ran into a problem approaching two months in, which was that my TDEE was sinking lower and lower, and I was starting to feel restricted and getting those familiar symptoms of metabolic adaptation: shivering, lethargic, and miserable.
I had been eating to the same diet plan / macros as when I was losing weight, just with more calories and targeting slightly higher protein (1g/lb) in an attempt to increase satiety.
However, I realised that, although this way of eating had served me well losing weight for the past year, something was going wrong and it was not sustainable.
In response, one month ago I made two radical changes at the same time.
The first change was to set the program to Manual, and to set the calorie target for the day to zero. This meant that there was no target I was meeting or falling short of, the calories for the day were simply as they were. This gave me a mental break from seeing that number.
The second thing I did was to change my daily menus and macro assignment, reducing protein to Low (in Manual, I set it manually to the equivalent of what low would be in coached mode, if that makes sense), which allowed more flexibility in the energy macros.
I then continued recording the calories and daily weight (for the data), but without trying to meet a particular calorie goal.
My calories were unnervingly high, but my TDEE rose to meet them, and miraculously I maintained the same weight across a month of eating at avg 2400, at a weight which I was struggling to maintain previously at a TDEE of around 1800.
Same body, same weight, same activity levels on the face of it, but hugely different TDEE. Isn’t that fascinating! I think so. 😆
Everyone’s body is different so I don’t think my particular exact dietary choices are relevant to this post, but the point is that among all the posts of weight loss and bulking, longer term maintenance can get overlooked.
For me it is just as tricky, particularly as my goal has been to become less reliant on measuring and weighing. (I know that is not realistic for everyone and not a goal for everyone, but I’m sharing this experience in case it is interesting for anyone else out there!).
Thank you to the devs for such a well designed app, and for your excellent moderation and modelling to shape this community into what it is, and thank you everyone here for all the information and support.

2023.03.23 17:16 mitchmatch26 2023 32 Teams/32 Days: Pittsburgh Steelers--Replacement Refs Style

Pittsburgh Steelers

Division: AFC North Record: 9-8 (3-3 Division), 3rd place AFC North Playoffs: Never rely on Joe Flacco to get you in.
First, thanks to u/ehhhhhhhhhhmacarena for letting me sub in on this for the 2nd time in three years. Maybe next year we'll get it right the first time. 😘 LINK TO HUB
General Season Review
The 2022 Steelers season was seen largely as a rebuilding year. No Ben. TJ missing a lot of time. OL not really a work of art. Offensively there are only 3 starters on their 2nd contracts, so the team is very young there. The Front seven on defense was/is severely lacking depth behind TJ, Cam, and Highsmith. The DBs outside of Minkah and Edmunds were largely unknowns, gambles, or value signings. Nothing about this team screamed “playoff chances until the last second of the season”. But that’s exactly how it went. They were alive until the clock struck zero on Jets-Dolphins in Week 18.
Mitchell Trubisky won the starting QB job out of camp, and as the veteran with the most starting experience on the roster, that makes sense. He was the safe choice. The staff has seen what they get with Mason. KP was a rook and you don’t want to shellshock him too soon. But you know what you get with a QB like Mitch. An uninspired offense that doesn’t move the ball quickly at all. Once KP arrived at half in Week 4 vs the Jets, the team was his. Sure the box score doesn’t look all that different. But if you have a choice between a vet who doesn’t do much, and a rookie who at least looks the same and improving? Take the upside.
KP improved every week and limited his mistakes. He ended up taking more control of the offense and had 4 fourth quarter comebacks/game winning drives, in weeks 9, 11, 15, and 16. Talk about improvement.
But the team still started 2-6. Finished 7-3 to go 9-8. Missed the playoffs. Nobody is “happy” with missing the playoffs or a barely .500 season, but given the situation, it wasn’t a bad season. Lots to love about this year. Some nice role players stuck out, the stars did what they do, and the franchise’s future showed lots of good things.

Weekly Game Review:
Week 1, @ Bengos: WHAT A WIN. WHAT A WIN. Okay, so I was at this game (6-0 all time baybayyyy) and felt gross after. An injured long snapper being the difference maker is crazy. Oh and Minkah going completely fucking super saiyan on the kitties from Eastern Kentucky Ohio. 14 tackles. 10 solo. 1 INT/TD. AND A BLOCKED XP TO SEND IT TO OVERTIME. Boy went crazy. Mike T started the game by stuffing everyones lockers with blacked out Air Force 1s, and Minkah brought that energy. Ja’Marr Chase felt it too when he gave Mink the bird and got 15 yards for it hahahahahahahahahaha.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Side note: Cincy fans, your city is known for its god awful chili/meat sauce/who cares what it's called. But PBS serves the fucking Walmart brand of it in stadium?? What up w that??
Week 2, vs. Patriots: First week of seven without TJ 🥲. Bill Belichick activated sleeper agent Gunner O to fumble that punt in the third quarter and then the Patriots scored.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Week 3, @ Brownies: Jacoby “Brisket” Brissett sliced and diced the defense to hand the Steelers this L. Best Browns QB on the roster, hands down.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Week 4, vs. Jets: Distractions from WRs who weren’t getting the ball and QBs fucking moms should distract the Jets and allow the Steelers defense to take over and win this one pretty handily right? Nope. Wanna know why?
Because:
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Subbed at half. ITS TIME FOR THE PICKLER TO SHINE. No? Maybe next week in Buffalo.
Week 5, @ Bills: Ron Howard: “He did not shine in Buffalo the next week.”
Week 6, vs. Bucs: Kenny got slapped in the head and left the game in the 3rd. But guess what?? MITCH TRUBISKY DOESN’T SUCK AT FOOTBALL AND HE BEAT TOM BRADY AND THE BUCS.
Week 7, @ Fins: This SNF game was honestly not bad despite the box score. Despite the L there was a lot of positive to take from Kenny and his growth, which is what mattered most this year.
Week 8, @ Eagles: I don’t wanna talk about it.
Week 9, @ UPMC Rooney Sports Complex: This is around the time the reports that KP8 had an “office” at the team facility to grind extra tape. Turns out it’s just a desk in the team room. Sorry Russ haters, not today.
LIVE IMAGE OF KENNY WORKING IN HIS OFFICE
Week 10, vs. Saints: Ho hum. Steelers beating Andy Dalton. What’s new? TJ back after missing weeks 2-8 and healthy-ish. Najee finally gets kickin and the offense with it. Not a world beater, but better all around.
Week 11, vs. Bengals: 🚨🚨 30 POINT OFFENSIVE EFFORT ALERT 🚨🚨 Buuuuuuuut the Bengos transformed to the Dark Bengos over their bye and Dark Bengo must have his sacrifice. Top 5 Uni matchup on the year too hands down. Maybebe ever.
Whiteinbred Bengo vs Blacked Out Block Letters. Chefs Kiss.
Week 12, @ Colts: Steelers love beating the Colts. I don’t know what it is about them, but there’s blood in the water. My logic is Indiana is next to Ohio. Steelers hate and historically own Ohio teams. Indy by nature of being near Ohio is basically Ohio. So, the team just treats them like they do any other Ohio team.
Week 13, @ Falcons: The coolest part of this game was the similarities of Connor Heywards first NFL touchdown and his father’s first NFL receiving TD.
Week 14, vs. Ravens: KP got hurt on like the 8th play of the game bc he came down with whatever disability Tua has that doesn’t allow them to properly go down when being tackled. I don’t know if it’s the body weight sack rules, QBs not knowing how to fall, or the spinning twist tackles, something’s gotta change.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Week 15, @ Panthers: This was a win but it certainly wasn’t because Mitch Trubisky is *good* at football. The Panthers had 21 rushing yards. Even for pass heavy teams that’s bad. So when The Darnold is your QB, you’re gonna suffer.
I mean uhhh the RIGGED NFL STOLE this game from the GEQBUS.
Week 16, vs. Raiders: A lot of us Steelers fans were nervous for this game. The Raiders have been a thorn in Coach Ts side for years. He was 2-5 entering this game against them. But we weren’t gonna let that ruin the Immaculate Reception 50th anniversary game, especially after Franco passed. And in 1972 football fashion, the Steelers won a 13-10 barn burner on a TD pass from KP to GP with :46 on the clock. And then Cam Sutton made that diving INT to seal the deal. Merry Christmas Yinz.
Week 17, @ Ravens: Naj delivers his first 100 yard performance of the year. TJ Watt says this is the first time all year he’s been injury free. Mitch Trubisky is not allowed to suck at football. Life is good.
Week 18, vs. Browns: All the team had to do is win against a division opponent, and pray to god the Bills don’t phone it in against the Patriots. Oh and rely on Joe Flacco to beat the Fins. Never rely on flacco for anything.

Position Group Reviews:

QB: This is why everyone is here. To read about Mitchell Trubisky. Who sucks at football. He is the definition of a “he can change for me” signing. Uninspiring, not the reason those Bears teams won, and definitely the reason some of these games were lost this year.
But the real real reason we all are here. Kenny Fucking Pickett. The box score is not favorable here. But look a little deeper. 2nd best deep ball passer this year!! Crazy. Watch the games. Watch him progress each game. Not making the same mistake twice. 11 turnovers in his first 5 games. 2 in his last 8 games, which came after the bye. Boy was IN THE LAB. Three 4th quarter comebacks and 4 game winning drives. He may not be on the same trajectory of that young class of elite game changing QBs like Mahomes, Burrow, or Allen. But he good. Oh he goooood. And that flow?? Nothing can stop THE PICKLER.
RB: Naj started the year slow and never really kicked off in a major way. He had a Lisfranc injury from camp that had him wearing a metal plate in his foot until Week 6. But he was still solid on a relatively mediocre offense.
The real story of this group is Jaylen Warren. UDFA from Ok. St. Had to compete with 3 other RBs in camp who all had been on the roster the previous year. Coach T likes to say “2 dogs, 1 bone.” Well Jaylen is the dog with that bone in his mou--- actually not gonna finish that one.
WR: Yinzers will focus on the fact that Diontae Johnson had 86 catches and no TDs. Which is objectively bad. But let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater on DJ. Pretty much every route he ran was a sideline route, comeback, curl, or something else that yields little to no YAC. He yet again had a great year separating from DBs better than anyone in the NFL. He also continues to show that he never really earned the name Diontae Dropson with his 4.8% drop rate which ranks 75th highest among pass catchers in the nfl.
Pickens just made highlight after highlight this year. He’s a freak. But he suffered from a somewhat limited route tree this year same as Diontae.
Steven Sims was a nice surprise out of camp this year too. Reliable returner mostly, solid in the slot. Carved out a nice role in the offense for himself.
Everyone else here was a body (Boykin, Cody White, Gunner) or injured (Calvin Austin III).
TE: Muth is about as reliable as it gets. Best YAC on the team at the moment. Fights for yards. Had a solid year and looks to continue his growth in year 3.
Zach Gentry was just a body in his first two years in Pittsburgh. Albeit he’s just a 6’8” 270 lb body. But the last two years he’s been a reliable and improved blocker, as well as a solid 15-20 catch type of target. Not gonna light it up, but definitely worth a roster spot.
Connor Heyward was not drafted because he’s Cam’s brother! He’s a solid H-Back type that was used in a lot of different ways this year. Really big fan. He may never be a top end player, but has long time beloved role player written all over him.
OT: Chuks Okorafor continues to be underrated. He plays the less glorified OT spot and isn’t a top 5 in the league, so he must be trash right? Nope. Dude is solid. Worth the extension last spring/summer.
Dan Moore Jr. (DMJ) in year two was about the same as year 1. A big bodied, athletic, raw, and not great LT. He’s gonna get a third year to start, maybe with a camp competition body. Yinzers are sick of him and want a high profile turnstile like Orlando Brown Jr. to replace him. I say wait for year 3.
The Orlando Brown joke was written before the Bengos signed him and I think that it's even funnier now hahaha
iOL: James Daniels was the big signing of the year for the Steelers, and despite a rough start he was really solid. Definitely the best OL of the year for the team, but nobody was exceptional.
Mason Cole's signing inspired none but he played a little better than expected. Tomlin really seems to like him and his communication skills. I think the value he brings may just be stuff us fans don’t see or know since we don’t know the calls.
Kevin Dotson, a fan favorite in the past, lost a lot of fans this year. The left side of the OL was pretty bad overall but there are some who think DMJ may improve with a better running mate at LG. KDot had a good to great rookie year. Oft injured in year 2 and down year 3. He’s probably on his last legs here if something doesn’t change in 2023.
DL: Cam is great and aging like a fine wine, I don’t need to really expand on that.
The rest of the group was interesting to watch. Ogunjobi was nice, especially as a late June add to the roster. I hope he can re-sign in Pittsburgh.
DeMarvin Leal was a tweener coming out of the draft and it showed in his usage. Only ticked up after TJs injury and shuffling of the DL. He was IR’ed for a bit and never really topped 25% snaps in a game but once maybe. He’ll be an interesting developmental piece to watch in 2023.
The rest of the guys did their jobs. Alualu was benched in favor of Montravius Adams. Chris Wormley has been a good rotational guy. Isaiahh Loudermilk made little to no noise this year after a decent rookie year in 2021.
OLB: Everyone likely wants to hear about TJ, but Alex Highsmith gets the first mention here. TJ being out for like half the season called for Highsmith to step up. And he did. 14.5 sacks. A true breakout year and silencing the yinzers who say “just plug anyone opposite TJ and they’ll eat”. He’s in a contract year in 2023 and deserves to be paid. Alex Highsmith was an absolute baller in 2022 and deserves his respect.
TJ was banged up and made didn’t make too much noise this year.
God dammit they need a third EDGE guy to spell TJ/Alex. It’s a bunch of JAGs in that room behind them.
ILB: Speaking of JAGs. Nobody here impressed. People will tell you Mark Robinson made a splash in the Ravens game, to which I respond that he played 26 snaps that game. The ILB group was so mediocre this year I’m not going to expand on any individual past that bit above. Big draft/FA need. Maybe 2x.
CB: Cam Sutton 🥲 was given the outside CB job full time this year basically. And he thriiiived. After being a role player for most of his career thus far, he bet on himself, and is now paid in Detroit. He got to watch Joe Haden play outside for a few seasons and I really think that Steelers era Joe is a good comp for Sutton. Smart, tackles well, versatile. Enjoy him Lions fans.
The rest of the group did well enough I guess. Levi was a solid inside outside guy and took the bulk of the CB2 snaps. A bargain at $4m/year. Thanks Commies for really screwing up Buffalo’s plans there. Ahkello Witherspoon greatly cooled down from his 3 INTs in the last 5 games of 2021. He got some time outside and wasn’t great. Not the worst CB in Tomlin’s tenure, definitely not the best.
I also want to take a side note on Arthur Maulet. He’s not a great NCB. But he brings a lot of energy and fire to this team. He apparently got in some peoples faces in the locker room after a 2022 loss that I refuse to talk about. He really seems to value that accountability and brings a level of leadership that is good on an otherwise young team. He’dnever get a mention otherwise, but I think he deserves some love for what he brings.
S: Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Terrell Edmunds continues to show he is Mr. Consistent. He wears a lot of hats for the defense, is always available, and largely a mistake free player. Yinzers still hate him because he’s a first rounder that isn’t an all-pro, but if every first rounder was at least an available, consistent, career starter, most teams would be fucking loaded.
Damontae Kazee is that third safety Mike Tomlin has been searching for the last few years. Tre Norwood looked like he may be it last year, but Kazee beat him out for the job. He’s a human missile. A violent player. And a full, healthy season ahead should do him well amongst the fans.
2023 Draft Picks:

Free Agency/Draft Needs:

Key Free Agents:

Preface: I’m not making predictions on contracts because that’s a useless practice. I know fuck all about what’s going on behind closed doors of NFL offices, so who cares about contract predictions.

Offense:

Oddly, None? I guess Mason Rudolph but HE GONE.

Defense:

Potential Cap Casualties, Retirements

Offense:

Defense:

Coaching Staff/Front Office review
\ * Tomlin *: “Haha fuck it we ball.”

Final Thoughts

Draft and free agency are looming. It’s exciting. New GM/AGM, new QB. Tomlin does what he does. There’s a lot of things to be excited about as a Steeler’s fan for the foreseeable future.
Kenny is the focus of the team now. Everything done should be done in furtherance of his development as the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise QB. Better Defense to support him on his bad days. Better OL to keep him upright. Better skill guys to make his life easier. It’s all for him. As it should be. If he’s right, the teams right.
HERE WE GO STEELERS

2023.03.23 17:04 DiscoFlip3000 FIRST 46 Hour fast of 2023

Hello hello. It’s my first prolonged fast of the year and was unplanned but came with listening to my body, Spring Equinox, the new moon, my period (started on day 5 of cycle) and UNDERSTANDING MORE ABOUT IF and cycles after learning more from Dr. Mindy from YouTube!
I realized I had been fasting NOT with my cycle but was so used to it due to my fitness teaching schedule and natural times of hunger and eating what I want when I want…. Which is good right?
What I didn’t realize is that it was putting more stress on my body, killing my metabolism and raising my cortisol levels even higher (which as a blood type A+ : higher cortisol) I don’t need to do!
My cholesterol came in normal, but in the high normal range. My doctor asked if I was stressed and I said YES! Lol 😂 Life changes/ fam changes/ moving /grieving etc for what seems like 3 years but actively spinning wheel for a year without a break… so yeah…
Anyway, bloodwork was in January 2023 and I decided to stop fasting to reset my gut, metabolism and try to lower my stress…. The easiest thing to do was to stop fasting. Which I wanted to do anyway based off my body and listening to it. As said, it was usually easy, but I woke up wanting breakfast, fruit specifically, protein oatmeal bake and even creamer in my coffee! I listened and did this and then my body said, fast.
I looked at my schedule and I could, I was in day 5 of my period so it’s a great time to start as per dr Mindy and well, so far so good.
My overall thoughts on this is to really learn how your body talks to you. I didn’t use my mind so much to “get to a goal or try a new schedule), but slowly my body just told me.
Plus, I always love alignment of fresh starts with say, the new moon. Yup, I’m that girl! Lol
On hour 36 of a 46 hour fast. Going to break it with Dr Mindy’s suggestion of bone broth, sauerkraut, steamed veggies and then a vegan protein shake. While I could have an impossible burger , I’d rather have a less processed protein!
Also, instead of saying “I could go further to 80 or 90 hours,” which I know I could, bc it gets much easier after 36 hours , there is nothing to prove or do. The only thing I’m planning is how to break it and give Dr Mindy’s knowledge to my body fully.
I write this as a learning curve, as a petite woman with lots of hormones (cortisol and premenopausal) and just starting adhd meds and still finding the time to just LISTEN TO MY BODY.
As a fitness, yoga, meditation teacher, all body’s are different and all hormones and variables are different. I feel like after this fast, I won’t “CRAVE AS MUCH,” as I did after breaking a fast before. Sometimes I felt great and other times by day 4 of not fasting I could eat 5k calories! Lol
Soooooo, going a bit more science based mixed with inner being feelings!
I know this is long, so thanks for reading but I wanted to get my thoughts out there bc I think so many women have been fasting as men and I was one of them!
Cheers to knowledge and learning and not being afraid to grow!
Ps bc people will ask, scale is down 4 pounds but it’s water weight, I feel less bloated and look less bloated, but really I wanted to help my gut and try to eat per my cycle! I nice to have a blueprint!

2023.03.23 15:57 YezenIRL (Spoilers Extended) Kingfisher and Bridge of Dream AKA time to solve the scene where Tyrion actually teleports

As a peace offering, here's what the reality bending sequence at the Bridge of Dream was really about.

The Inconceivable!

Perhaps the most mysterious scene of the entire series occurs as Tyrion sails through the Sorrows down the Rhoyne. As the Shy Maid passes the ruins of Chroyane, it crosses paths with a light (assumed to be a pole boat) which identifies itself as Kingfisher, and soon after fades into the fog.
As the Shy Maid follows the river through the cursed fog, Griff spots a light up ahead, and Tyrion thinks it must be the Kingfisher (or some poleboat like it). Two more lights appear, and Young Griff recognizes the Bridge of Dream up ahead.
"The Bridge of Dream," Griff named it.
"There will be stone men on the span. Some may start to wail at our approach, but they are not like to molest us." - Tyrion V, ADWD
As the ship passes beneath the broken bridge, the crew makes note of Stone Men lurking in the fog. The crew is cautious, but the Stone Men do not attack, and instead there is a scene where Tyrion unravels the identities of Aegon Targaryen and Jon Connington, then reveals his own and speaks of having killed his family.
Then Tyrion realizes something impossible.
As the Shy Maid follows the river through the cursed fog, Lemore spots a light up ahead, and Griff remarks it must be the Kingfisher (or some poleboat like it). Two more lights appear, and then Tyrion recognizes the Bridge of Dream up ahead again.
"The Bridge of Dream," said Tyrion.
"Inconceivable," said Haldon Halfmaester. "We've left the bridge behind. Rivers only run one way." - Tyrion V, ADWD
As the ship passes beneath the broken bridge, this time the crew are immediately attacked by three Stone Men and so they fight the monsters back with fire and steel. In the ensuing struggle Tyrion is knocked overboard into the icy cold water and sinks into the darkness, imagining that his ghost will haunt the Seven Kingdoms.
Basically the Shy Maid sails down the river and crosses under the Bridge of Dream, a scene unraveling the Aegon plot plays out, then the crew is shocked to find they have been transported back up the river. They cross under the Bridge of Dream again, and a different scene plays out.
This sequence at the Bridge of Dream is supernatural. and like any other supernatural dream or vision should be interpreted symbolically.

Up or down the river... of time

You can discount the Bridge of Dream as random world building or a remnant of the deleted chapter where Tyrion meets the Shrouded Lord, but neither explanation works. GRRM never throws in random magic for no reason, and the space-time anomaly could have easily been cut along with the removed chapter. It changes nothing and never comes up again. And yet it's kept.
The key to this scene isn't really the Shrouded Lord, it's the Kingfisher. It's about time travel. The river Rhoyne is being used to symbolize the river of time.
Bloodraven uses this metaphor later in the book:
For men, time is a river. We are trapped in its flow, hurtling from past to present, always in the same direction. The lives of trees are different. - Bloodraven (Bran III, ADWD)
In the scene where Bran communicates with the past and Brynden Rivers tells him that it's impossible, he also compares time to a river. A river that only runs one way. Sound familiar?
"The Bridge of Dream," said Tyrion.
"Inconceivable," said Haldon Halfmaester. "We've left the bridge behind. Rivers only run one way." - Tyrion V, ADWD
Brynden Rivers' sentiment about the river of time echoes Haldon's sentiment about the flow of rivers. Both claim "the river" only flows one way, immediately after a scene where the world shows their claim to not necessarily be true.
Just as the Shy Maid is transported back up the river Rhoyne, Bran's mind is transported back up the river of time.
"The explanation of Bran’s powers, the whole question of time and causality—can we affect the past? Is time a river you can only sail one way or an ocean that can be affected wherever you drop into it?" - GRRM
Notice how GRRM uses this exact language when talking about time travel and Bran's ability to effect the past. For most, time is a river that only flows one way. But not for the mysterious little light in the fog known as the Kingfisher.
And not for Bran the Broken, AKA The Fisher King.
For those unaware, the Fisher King is a broken king from Arthurian legend derived from the Celtic myth of Bran the Blessed. Because of his wound, the Fisher King cannot produce heirs or lead his men into war. Which according to the legend is a bad thing.
Most significantly, the Shy Maid crosses the same stretch of river twice and events play out differently each time. The giant stone hand, broken spire, headless hero, and tree with giant roots are spotted both times in that same order, but the spiral staircase changes position and the stone hand appears on different sides of the boat.
The real divergence however comes after they pass the Bridge of Dream. The first time the ship passes the crew discusses identity and politics. The second time the crew fights for their lives against three supernatural foes and Tyrion just about dies. The river of time plays out twice, and the outcome changes.
Those who know my thoughts on the ending might see where this is headed.
The Shy Maid passing the Bridge of Dream symbolizes the story moving down the river of time, and the Kingfisher symbolizes the Fisher King Bran the Broken. In A Dream of Spring, not only will Bran transport his consciousness back up the river of time, but the story will play out differently the second time around. Just as it did for Tyrion and the Shy Maid.
Brynden Rivers was wrong. Bran can and will change the past.
But. . . that's. . .
"The Bridge of Dream," said Tyrion.
"Inconceivable," said Haldon Halfmaester. "We've left the bridge behind. Rivers only run one way." - Tyrion V, ADWD
Yup
