2023.06.05 22:44 bagelstripes Moving from Portland OR to Western MA this summer
Hello!
Looking for moving company recommendations! My family is moving from Portland, OR to western MA in mid-July; just accepted a job offer and had a house offer accepted, so now things are happening for real.
We’re planning to hire movers as we have a toddler and pets to deal with and would like to move some furniture (likely one couch, possibly two) and mattresses/bed frames, in addition to a medium grand piano (which has a lot of sentimental value). We have a lot of books and a good amount of stuff, and while obviously we’ll be leaving behind the things we don’t want, this is a forever move to be close to family so I’m comfortable with bringing everything we want to keep. (Also we’re moving to a much more rural place so it’s not as easy to find things quickly on Craigslist!)
Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated. After my grandma died we had the piano moved out here by a specific piano moving company, but ideally I would prefer to move it with the rest of our things this time if possible. However, it’s just occurred to me that maybe we’re good candidates for pods if we move the piano separately?
Thank you!

2023.06.05 15:31 toothepastehombre Where can I sell my broke down vehicle?
Does anyone here have experience with a reputable Cash for Car service here in Portland? I have a 90s vehicle with clean title but I don't have the bandwidth to take care of the repairs needed to get it back up and running for resale.
I thought about posting a as-is add on craigslist, but the vehicle needs to be towed... I also feel conflicted donating it, but maybe my hesitations are off based.
Any info is greatly appreciated

2023.06.03 01:53 hatsnak Basic questions for first stereo setup
Howdy! I've got a few basic questions as I look into buying my first stereo setup. (Previously, my roommates have owned all the receivers and speakers, etc.)
If I would like to use the same speakers for TV/movies, games, and music, do I of necessity need to shop for an AVR? Or is there stereo-centric gear that I could hook my TV up to?
How would I go about trying to find a subwoofer that matches well with speakers I already have? I have a pair of small speakers that aren't a typical brand: Joey Roth's ceramic speakers. I like the sound on the high- to midrange, but they're really lacking on the low end. I'm not sure how to shop for a sub that would sound good with them. I'd buy the sub sold by Joey Roth, but I can't find it on sale without having to buy another set of speakers.
And generally, are there brands that make receivers/amps/preamps that are smaller and/or cooler-looking than the standard black/silver box stereo gear? I'm moving into a fairly small apartment and won't have a ton for room for big stereo components. And (inconveniently) I care a fair bit about the aesthetics of stuff in my space.
Boilerplate: Budget and location - Ideally, I'd like to spend $1000 or less for a receiveamp, sub, and speakers (if I end up buying new ones). I'm moving from Seattle, WA, USA area to Portland, OR, USA area. A really neat audio gear shop near me is Turntables & Trails.
How the gear will be used - I'd like to listen to vinyl records and CDs, as well as for watching TV/movies and playing games.
New or used - I sorta prefer to buy used in general, but I worry about getting ripped off for something as expensive and fragile as audio gear. I usually check craigslist, OfferUp, Mercari, eBay, and Goodwill, as well as local shops.
Past gear experience - My roommate has an Onkyo AVR with Onkyo 7.1 satellite speakers. The AVR is very big and runs hot, and it's a bit complicated to use, but I guess I'd buy another one. His speakers are only ok - they never wow me, and I rarely feel like I appreciate the surround sound.
I currently have Joey Roth Audio ceramic speakers, Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks II stereo desktop speakers+sub, and IKEA FREKVENS mono bluetooth speaker + sub. The Joey Roth speakers sound really clear and crisp in high and mids, but really do not impress in the lows. I actually like the Soundsticks a lot, they sound great to me, but they don't really work too well unless I'm sitting at the desk in the sweet spot. And the FREKVENS speaker is fine for a portable-ish bluetooth speaker, but it doesn't wow me.

2023.06.02 18:34 Afoolfortheeons Hopeful the day before the plunge
It's the day before the move to Portland. Still feeling strong. I've got a game plan. First thing I'm doing is going to Davis Street to the Street Root office and picking up a very thorough resource booklet. Next thing is heading to a gym and getting a membership so I can safely store my second bag of clothes. After that, I'm going to find a backup battery for when it's late at night and I'm deep in some SSS and need to write endless lines of text. And after that, it's up in the air. I could juggle to earn a few bucks for the shit of it or try to find some cardboard to make funny signs, but ultimately, I know that a lot of downtime will be spent walking around aimlessly. Why? I'll elaborate on that.
When I was in Portland for a five hour layover, I had one person offer me some clear and another asked if I was holding the same, wanting to buy some. The last time I was in Portland, I met several people who were just carrying some psychedelics. Weed's sold for five dollars an eighth if you find the right store on the right day. Drug decriminalization has radically transformed life on the street. Instead of suppressing people's freedoms via the police state, there's a lot of resources for people who want to live their life on their own terms or quit bad habits. So, for those who want to get the most out of exploring their consciousness, it's a fucking paradise.
That said, I want to be smart. I'm budgeting so I won't suddenly run out of money. I'm also going to attend a dual diagnosis anonymous group. There was a small group that met every week that offered science-based assistance and feedback that really kept me grounded. And, as adamant as I am that homelessness is a good thing for me at this point in time, I am going to be working on getting housed for at least the winter.
That's really my primary mission. Getting out of the situation that I'm putting myself in. My brain is strange sometimes. But, I'm confident that it won't be too hard. When I was in the women's shelter during the start of covid, I was able to find a room for five hundred a month with no security deposit by making a single craigslist post. Likewise, I'm going to try networking as much as possible. A friend might let me crash on their couch if I throw them some money. And then there's all these resources to help people in way worse situations than mine get out of the elements.
With that out of the way, you know something I'm really looking forward to being back in Portland? The Sunday drum circle. For like six hours every Sunday, a group of radically awesome free spirits gather up under a bridge in the park just east of the Willamette and knock out some vibrant beats while weed is freely shared and you never know who's going to turn up. It's a shame I don't have LED juggling balls at this time, but I'll be able to do a little bit with my normal balls at the start of the festivities while it's still light out.
All said, I'm really excited! I had come out here with the hopes of getting in the groove of a normal life, but having seen what that offers, I see a much juicier choice that stretches off the beaten path. This summer is going to be magnificent. Perfect reality for me to synthesize for myself. Oh yea, that reminds me, although I volunteered for this, this is something the CIA wants me to do. I've been trained to be a messiah, so let's be a fucking messiah!

2023.05.03 19:30 lascheratlarge What’s the best way to find available office space?
I’m looking for a private office space to use as a writer and researcher. Are there any ideal tools for searching besides loopnet and craigslist, or are these the best? I’m aware of most of the coworking spaces that have private offices. I’ve found a few leads using the above tools. I’ve seen some signs on buildings. Anything else people recommend? Any commercial property management companies people recommend? Any to avoid?
Also, feel free to DM me if you have an available space. I think I can manage with at least 150 square feet, but would prefer more like 2-300, ideally in N or inner NE Portland, or perhaps NW and a bit of SE (like only as far south as Belmont and as far east as 28th), and only for an excellent place. I don’t need a furnished space though I wouldn’t reject one. I do need a place that has pretty stable climate conditions (i.e. AC and not too much humidity) as some of the stuff I’m looking through is very old and needs to be kept in stable, dry conditions. I don’t want a shared office/communal space/hot desk. Ideally I’d move in immediately but I can probably wait until June 1 for the right place.
Thanks for any tips or leads you have to share.

2023.05.02 05:10 foxheath 2023 Portland property management companies (updated)
Hello,
So in 2022, I posted the compiled list of property management companies in my search for an apartment. I am (sorrowfully) looking for an apartment to rent again. No surprise it's as terrible as last year. I wanted to update the original posts, but my general lack of knowledge about updating a post that old has led to this new post. Again, vaguely alphabetical, but this one includes URLs, and suggestions from commenters on the previous post. Tidbits from last post: Many places that were called said to keep their page up and aggressively refresh. I have seen listings go up and disappear within an hour. And, many spots are privately owned, Im personally checking Facebook, craigslist, and telling everyone who will listen that I'm looking. Enjoy.
