The Eagles took care of business two weeks ago in the NFCCG when they cruised to a 31-7 win against the 49ers in a game that did not live up to its hype after 49ers QB Brock Purdy tore his UCL on the 49ers first drive when he was sacked by Hassan Reddick who also forced a fumble on the play. Regardless of the injury, the Eagles still dominated the 49ers in the trenches and won the lopsided affair in dominating fashion. They will take on the number one seed from the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs had a much tougher challenge when they faced off against the Bengals and won on a last second FG by Harrison Buckner. This game will showcase the two best teams in the NFL this season which finished with identical records and identical points scored. It will also be the first Super Bowl played between two brothers as C Jason Kelce for the Eagles will take on his younger brother Chiefs TE Travis Kelce. Perhaps something more monumental, it will be the first time that both Super Bowl teams are led by African American QBs which were the MVP(Mahomes) and the MVP runner up (Hurts). These two teams are pretty evenly matched, both have talented QBs, strong offensive and defensive lines, good coaches and talented TEs, but Eagles have the advantage on the outside on both sides of the ball with their talented WR and CB duos. The Eagles need to be disciplined on defense to keep Mahomes contained and limit future HOF TE Travis Kelce. The Eagles will also have to be aware of the screen game. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is one of the best in the league at designing screens and I expect a fair number to be called to try to negate the Eagles potent pass rush. The Eagles need to stay in their lanes and not get up field to break up these screens for a loss. On the other side, the Eagles need to be worried about Chris Jones, who is a game wrecker as he proved in the AFCCG game with 4 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. The Eagles OL is significantly better than the Bengals’ OL, and they will need to continue what they have done in their first two playoff games where they protected Hurts and gave him time to throw and established the run game early to create a balanced attack. If the Eagles can do that they should be able to put up some points against this Chiefs defense. Let’s get another ring. Go Birds!

The Eagles shot themselves in the football multiple times in a shootout with the chiefs, on the first drive Hurts completed his first three passes for 56 yards, but overthrew Zach Ertz in the endzone forcing the Eagles to settle for a FG. In the 2nd quarter Hurts missed an open Greg Ward in the endzone after a TD pass to Goedert was called back after Hurts held the ball too long on a RPO and an ineligible downfield was called. The Chiefs pulled away in the second after Mahomes threw a pass overhand, underhand and shoveled another to give the Chiefs a 21-10 lead going into half. The Eagles missed more opportunities in the 3rd when a Zach Ertz TD was negated by an offensive pass interference call on JJAW and the Eagles settled for a FG. KC added three more TDs in the second half for the 42-30 win over the Eagles to give Andy Reid his 100 career coaching win with the Chiefs.

A game that was hyped up all week turned into quite the dud as the Eagles welcomed the 49ers to town for the NFCCG. The Eagles scored on the opening drive after the refs missed the ball coming loose on a Devonta Smith catch and the Eagles hurried to the line and ran a play as Shanahan kept the challenge flag in his pocket. The Eagles ran the ball in two plays later to Miles Sanders to take a 7-0 lead. On the following possession, the 49ers learned why the Eagles led the league in sacks when they tried to block Hassan Reddick with a TE leading to a sack fumble which took QB Brock Purdy out of the game with a UCL injury. From there the 49ers could do little on offense, though the 49ers did tie it up with a Christian McCaffrey TD run, however the Eagles took the lead right back on the next possession to give them a 14-7 lead. The Eagles extended the lead further after a fumbled snap by the 49ers and the Eagles made it 21-7 going into half time. On the first possession after the half it went from bad to worse for the 49ers as they lost their second QB Josh Johnson to a concussion. With the 49ers already losing the battle in the trenches on both sides of the football and now down 14 points and no way to pass the Eagles ran out the clock with long time consuming drives on 2 out of their next 3 possessions which ate up 13+ minutes of clock and added another 11 points for the Eagles as they finished off the 49ers 31-7.
Chiefs
The Chiefs took on the Bengals in a game where the Chiefs were looking to knock the Bengals down a notch after the Bengals won three straight against them dating back to last season. Patrick Mahomes was hobbled with a high ankle sprain and the Chiefs were missing multiple WRs with injuries as well, but this year's MVP was determined to make sure it would not be four straight losses to the Bengals. Mahomes threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns, even though he was missing three of his wide receivers to injuries by the end. Marquez Valdes-Scantling led with 116 yards and a touchdown, while Travis Kelce had seven catches for 78 yards and a score. The Chiefs defense chipped in as well, sacking Bengals QB Joe Burrow 5 times including 2 by Chris Jones who was a terror all day for the Bengals OL. The game did have some controversy. With just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Kansas City ran a play on third-and-9 that fell short of the first-down marker. As the Chiefs' offense went to the sideline for an apparent punt, officials convened to discuss the clock. Referee Ron Torbert ruled that the play should be nullified because of a timekeeping mistake on the preceding second-down play, an incomplete pass. The Chiefs were awarded another third-down play, baffling NFL fans watching. On the second third-and-9 play, a defensive holding penalty by Bengals cornerback Eli Apple negated a sack of Patrick Mahomes and gave the Chiefs a first down. However, the Chiefs picked up just 1 more yard on the series. This made do-over a loss of 1 minute, 10 seconds off the clock which in the interest of fairness, was incredibly important at that stage of such a big game. But it didn't result in any extra points for the Chiefs. The game ended up coming down to the wire tied 20-20 on the final drive where it was 3rd and 4 for the Chiefs from the Cincinnati 47 where Mahomes took off bad ankle and all got the first down before running out of bounds where he was pushed from behind by Bengals LB Joseph Ossai giving the Chiefs another 15 yards. This put the Chiefs in FG range at the Bengals 27 with just 3 seconds left on the clock. The Chiefs kicker hit the 45 yards FG with no time on the clock to give the Chiefs the 23-20 win.

Philadelphia, which joined Kansas City as the only 14-win teams in the NFL this season, is set to appear in its fourth ever Super Bowl, having previously done so in 1980, 2004 and 2017 (Eagles defeated New England, 41-33, in Super Bowl LII). Overall, Super Bowl LVII marks the franchise’s eighth NFL title game (also 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1960).
Since 2004, only five NFL teams have reached the Super Bowl three times – New England (seven), Philadelphia (three), Kansas City (three), Pittsburgh (three) and Seattle (three). The Eagles are also one of four franchises to appear in multiple Super Bowls since 2017, along with Kansas City (three), L.A. Rams (two) and New England (two).
Jeffrey Lurie is the fourth individual owner to have three different head coaches reach the Super Bowl (Andy Reid, Doug Pederson and Nick Sirianni), joining Pat Bowlen (Broncos – Dan Reeves, Mike Shanahan, John Fox, Gary Kubiak), Al Davis (Raiders – John Madden, Tom Flores, Bill Callahan) and Georgia Frontiere (Rams – Ray Malavasi, Dick Vermeil, Mike Martz). Hurts (14-1, .933) and Mahomes (14-3, .824) tied for the most QB wins in the NFL this year. They also finished 1st and 2nd in passer rating (Mahomes, 105.2; Hurts, 101.5) and yards per attempt (Mahomes, 8.10; Hurts, 8.05), while ranking among the top in TD/INT ratio (Hurts, 2nd, 3.67; Mahomes, 3rd, 3.42), total yards per game (Mahomes, 1st, 329.9; Hurts, 3rd, 297.4) and total TDs (Mahomes, 1st, 45; Hurts, 4th, 35).

He also tied the single-season team record with 35 total TDs (also Randall Cunningham in 1990), including 13 rushing TDs (2nd-most ever by an NFL QB, behind Cam Newton’s 14 in 2011).

Following its victories over New York (W, 38-7) and San Francisco (W, 31-7) in the Wild Card Round and NFC Championship Game, Philadelphia became the first team in NFL history to score 31+ points while allowing 7-or-fewer points multiple times in the same postseason.
The Eagles are the first NFL team to allow 7-or-fewer points multiple times in a playoff run since the 2000 Ravens (three). Furthermore, the last time Philadelphia gave up 7-or-fewer points in consecutive playoff games was during the 1948 and 1949 NFL Championships.
The Eagles became the seventh team in NFL history to win multiple games by 24+ points in a postseason, joining the 2002 Buccaneers, 1992 Cowboys, 1989 49ers (three), 1988 49ers, 1985 Bears and 1983 Raiders. Each of those teams went on to win the Super Bowl.
Notably, Philadelphia is the first NFL team to rank among the Top 3 in the NFL in total offense (389.1 ypg, 3rd) and total defense (301.5 ypg, 2nd) in the same season since the 2010 San Diego Chargers.
In the NFC Championship Game vs. San Francisco, the Eagles rushed for 148 yards and a franchise-playoff-record 4 TDs (by three different players). It was the first time the 49ers had allowed 4 rushing TDs in a single game in more than six years (4 on 10/16/16 at Buffalo).

A.J. Brown (career-high 1,496) and DeVonta Smith (career-high 1,196) are the first 1,000+ yard receiving duo in franchise history.
Brown’s career-high 1,496 receiving yards finished 4th in the league behind Justin Jefferson (1,809), Tyreek Hill (1,710) and Davante Adams (1,516). In his first season with the Eagles, Brown set a single-season franchise record with 1,496 receiving yards, surpassing the previous mark owned by Mike Quick in 1983 (1,409).
Brown also tied for 3rd in the NFL with a career-high-tying 11 receiving TDs (also 2020), behind Davante Adams (14) and Travis Kelce (12). He also averaged 17.0 yards per catch, a figure that ranked 2nd in the league, trailing only Jaylen Waddle (18.1) (min. 50 catches).
DeVonta Smith finished his second NFL season with 95 receptions, which are the most by a WR in Eagles history, eclipsing the previous mark owned by Irving Fryar in 1996 (88).
The Eagles set a single-season franchise record with an NFL-leading 70 sacks. Since 1982, when sacks became an official statistic, only the 1984 Bears (72) and 1989 Vikings (71) have totaled more.
Philadelphia is the only NFL team since 1982 to have four different players record 10.0+ sacks in the same season – Haason Reddick (16.0), Brandon Graham (11.0), Javon Hargrave (11.0) and Josh Sweat (11.0).
Haason Reddick tied for the 2nd-most sacks (career-high 16.0) in the NFL, trailing only Nick Bosa (18.5). His 16.0 sacks are tied for the 3rd most by any NFL player in their first season with a team, trailing only Shaquil Barrett with Tampa Bay in 2019 (19.5) and Bryce Paup with Buffalo in 1995 (17.5). Reddick, who also led the league with 5 strip sacks and 5 FFs (tied), became the first NFL player to produce 10.0+ sacks in three consecutive seasons with three different teams.
Including playoffs, Reddick has 19.5 sacks in 19 games. His 3.5 sacks this postseason are the most by an Eagle in a single playoff run.
At age 34, Brandon Graham registered double-digit sacks (11.0) for the first time in his career. He is the oldest NFL player with 11.0+ sacks since Julius Peppers (age 37) and Terrell Suggs (age 35) in 2017.
Javon Hargrave recorded a career-high 11.0 sacks, which ranks 4th among NFL DTs this season, trailing Chris Jones (15.5), Quinnen Williams (12) and Daron Payne (11.5). Hargrave’s 11.0 sacks are the most by an Eagles DT since Andy Harmon in 1993 (11.5).
Miles Sanders finished the regular season as one of three NFL RBs to produce 1,200+ rushing yards (career-high 1,269, 5th in NFL), 11+ rushing TDs (career-high 11) and a 4.5+ rushing average (4.9) this season, joining Josh Jacobs and Nick Chubb. He also became the third Eagles RB to record 1,200+ rushing yards and 10+ rushing TDs in a season, joining Ricky Watters (1995, 1996) and LeSean McCoy (2011).
Since 1970, only three NFL centers have been selected first-team AllPro five times: Dermontti Dawson (six), Mike Webster and Jason Kelce. Dawson and Webster are both Pro Football Hall of Famers.
According to Pro Football Focus, Lane Johnson has not allowed a sack since Week 11 of 2020 or a QB hit since Week 7 of 2021.
Despite missing five games due to injury, Dallas Goedert ranked 2nd among all league TEs in yards per reception (12.8), trailing only Jordan Akins (13.4). Goedert also finished 3rd in yards after the catch (420), behind Travis Kelce (648) and Evan Engram (465), as well as 3rd in 20+ yard receptions (11), behind Kelce (19) and George Kittle (12).
T.J. Edwards registered a career-high 159 total tackles, which finished 7th overall in the league. His 159 tackles are the 2nd-most by an Eagle in the last 31 seasons, trailing Byron Evans in 1992 (175).
James Bradberry finished with the 3rd-lowest passer rating allowed in the NFL (55.9) (min. 50 targets) and posted the 3rd-most PDs (17).
Bradberry and Darius Slay finished as the only CB tandem in the NFL to both produce 14+ PDs and 3+ INTs this season.

By now, you’ve probably read all about this game’s storyline, inhaling every new article published with anticipation only building. You come to Reddit and refresh your team sub’s feed with a sort of giddiness. You put in your earphones at work a bit more so you can listen to some football podcasts. Every time you see another fan wearing your team’s gear, there’s that knowing glance of camaraderie like you’re the ones that will be going to battle in just a few days. Because you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Chiefs fans don’t get it. This means something else to us. Our fervor and pride is what makes Philly Philly. It’s a city that’s always been written off, often been considered “second chair”. Today, let’s talk about another time a team wearing red thought they could outlast us (and failed). Today, let’s go back 245 years to 1777. Revolutionary War: Philadelphia, home of the Continental Congress. The same Continental Congress that had left Philly already once before was set to abandon the city once again, retreating westward to Lancaster and York. George Washington’s army hadn’t managed to hold off the Redcoats as they approached Philadelphia from the southwest. Outnumbered, the rebels fought tooth and nail at the Battle of Brandywine, but ultimately lost double the soldiers the Redcoats had. With the opposition’s retreat, the Reds came to Philly thinking the Congress’s retreat meant the city’s easy subjugation. That confidence was short-lived. The Red officer in charge of the occupation resigned. His replacement was ordered to retreat. The occupation had lasted from September to June. As the Red general pulled northward, Washington’s army pursued. No f&>ing way were those assholes getting away with it. With reinforcements powered by air (French ships, deep passing game…shh…just roll with it), that Red general crumbled. By 1778, he sent a messenger to ask to be recalled home. You can’t outlast us. You don’t understand what it means to bide your time, what it does to you, what it has done to us over the years and what it meant to us to win in 2018. We’re Eagles fans. That rabid and informed yearning, that burning deep inside has become ingrained in us from an early age. It’s not going anywhere after winning one. Because we’re still getting written off. Our team “lucked” into this position. Noone likes us, we don’t care. It’s a Philly thing.
 
Matchups to Watch
Skinny and Swole Batman vs the young corners of the Chiefs
The Eagles talented WR duo combined for 2692 and 18 TDs this season and have jokingly been called the Batmans on the team which other players have joined in on. They will face off against a very young secondary of the Chiefs which includes rookies Trent McDuffie and Jaylon Brown along with third year CB L'Jarius Sneed. None of the three have been overwhelmingly impressive this season, but nickel CB Watson has been picked on the most, giving up 51 receptions and 5 TDs with an opposing QB rating of 93.4 when targeted according to PFF. Look for the Eagles to go to 11 personnel quite a bit to get Watson on the field to take advantage of the mismatch Smith and Brown have against him. Watson in particular may have issues with Smith who is quick and is a great route runner which has been a weakness for Watson this season for him this year as he thrives on being a physical CB. If Smith is able to get off the line, he should be able to get open on Watson down field. AJ Brown on the other side may be a mismatch for any of the Chiefs corners though, he has roughly 30lbs on all three of them and should have no issue getting off the ball against them. As you can see in the PFF WCB Matchups above, PFF really likes this matchup as well. Brown is due for a big day, after being relatively quiet in the first two playoff games, mainly due to the Eagles going up big early and focusing on the run. Brown is going to be eager to get the ball in his hands and find the endzone, something he has not done since the Saints game back in week 17.The Eagles will need to get these two going against a Chiefs team that is going to put up points.
Eagles OL vs Chris Jones
Chris Jones is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and he is a DPOY finalist for a reason. Jones lines up all across the line with DC, Steve Spagnulo, always looking for mismatches for his defense’s best player. That will not be as for Spagnulo this time around though as it was last season where the Eagles were starting backups at both tackle positions and right guard, with Lane Johnson being a last minute scratch due to anxiety and Mailata and Seumalo both missing the game with injuries. The Eagles will have all their starters in for this one though, even though Lane Johnson is battling a torn adductor in his groin and Dickerson will be sporting a brace on his elbow. The entire line will have to be ready for Jones though and know where it is lining up, especially after Jones wreaked havoc in the AFCCG blowing up the run and sacking Joe Burrow 2 times. That said, the Eagles OL is significantly better than the OL of Cincinnati. PFF ranked the Eagles as the top OL in the league this season while the Bengals ranked 28th. The Eagles OL also took care of business last week against the 49ers, virtually shutting down probable DPOY Nick Bosa and getting more pancakes than a fat kid at iHOP. The Eagles will need to do the same to Jones and the rest of the Chiefs DL this week as well. If the Eagles are able to establish the run and give Hurts time this offense should be able to put up some points.

I am planning on moving out to PA in the next few months. I have family in central NJ (near Princeton) so I'm trying to move to a part of PA that is a reasonable distance from there. I was looking at something like Levittown or Bristol but all I can go off for now is Google Maps and general online research. Are these ok places? I'm just trying to avoid living in any rough areas and I think I can afford not to. I'll be renting (either 1 or 2 bedroom), its only me no significant other and I make 68K a year. Any other areas that would be good? I don't care how boring a town is I just want it to be relatively safe.

The Eagles reminded people why they had the best record in football this weekend playing their most complete game in weeks as they dismantled the division rival Giants 38-7. This week they will have a much tougher task though when they take on the 49ers who went 13-4 this season and have one of the best defenses in the NFL. The 49ers took care of the Eagles other rival who made the playoffs when they dispatched the Cowboys 19-12. This is a matchup that many people considered the best two teams in the league this past season. On offense the biggest thing for the Eagles is going to be to protect the football and take what San Francisco gives them to limit turnovers. If the Eagles OL can win against the San Francisco DL, the Eagles offense should be able to put up points, but they will need to protect Hurts and get AJ Brown and Devonta Smith going to do so. If the Eagles get the outside passing game going it will open up Goedert in the middle and the run game to allow the Eagles to open the playbook. On defense the biggest thing will be limiting McCaffrey and Mitchell in the run game and forcing the 49ers in 3rd and longs to get the Eagles pass rush going. The Eagles need to use the same game plan against the Giants and force Purdy to beat them with his arm. If the Eagles can get ahead and make the 49ers chase them with the passing game it will be a recipe for success, but that will be no easy task against this squad. It should be a hard fought game that will be won or lost in the trenches. Go Birds!

The Eagles would start the game being able to march down the field throughout the first half, including a 91 yard bomb from Jalen Hurts to Quez Watkins. However, after a failed "Philly Special" attempt, Garoppolo drove the 49ers 97 yards on 12 plays, capping it with an 11-yard TD pass to Jauan Jennings. The 49ers also blocked a field goal in the first half and held the Birds could only muster 3 points in the first half. The 49ers would tack on 10 points in the 4th quarter before surrendering a late QB sneak TD from Hurts. As the 49ers won 17-11. The loss was their first loss to the 49ers since 2014.

The Eagles took on their division rival as they welcomed the Giants to town for the Linc’s first playoff game since losing in the Wild Card round in 2019. The Linc was bumping and the Eagles took it to the Giants early. The Eagles dominated both sides of the ball and on offense, the star-studded line allowed the Eagles to rush 44 times for an astounding 268 yards (6.1 YPC). Meanwhile, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts was hit just one time despite the Giants blitzing on more than 42% of his dropbacks. On defense the Eagles sacked Daniel Jones five times, hit him six times and pressured him on more than 31% of his dropbacks. Jones was under duress all night, even to the point of missing open receivers when he had the time to make throws. The Eagles ended up winning 38-7 in the rout.

The 49ers took on one of the Eagles other rivals as they welcomed the Cowboys to Levi Stadium. In what was a largely defensive matchup most of the evening, but the key difference was that the 49ers did a better job of taking what the Cowboys gave them and didn’t turn over the football and two key scoring drives in the 4th quarter which broke a 9-9 tie. Purdy hit Kittle up the middle on a big throw and great catch by Kittle before McCaffrey capped the drive with a 2 yard TD run on the 49ers only TD drive of the game. The 49ers were able to hold on to the lead and win 19-12 to advance to the NFCCG.

With a 38-7 home win over New York in the NFC Divisional Round, Philadelphia earned its seventh conference title game under Jeffrey Lurie’s ownership (eighth overall since the 1970 merger). The Eagles have played in the 2nd-most conference championships (seven) in the NFL since 2001, trailing only New England (13) in that span.

Philadelphia rushed for 268 yards, marking the 2nd-most in franchise postseason history, trailing only a 274-yard performance in the 1949 NFL Championship Game (12/18/49 at L.A. Rams). The Eagles also tied a team playoff record with a 71.4% (10-of-14) third-down conversion rate (also 71.4% vs. Minnesota in 2017 NFC Championship).
The Eagles have the most Pro Bowl selections (eight) in the NFL this year – A.J. Brown, Landon Dickerson, Jalen Hurts, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Haason Reddick, Miles Sanders and Darius Slay. Philadelphia also has six All-Pro honorees (the Eagles’ most All-Pro picks since the 2004 season) – Johnson and Kelce on the first team along with James Bradberry, Brown, Hurts and Reddick on the second team.
Philadelphia scored a franchise-record 477 points in 2022, including team records in total TDs (59), scrimmage TDs (57) and rushing TDs (32). The Eagles’ 32 rushing TDs tied for the 3rd-most in league history, trailing the 1962 Packers (36) as well as the 1976 Steelers (33).
Philadelphia became just the fifth NFL team since 1970 to rush for 25+ TDs in consecutive seasons, joining the 2002-05 Chiefs (four), 1994- 95 Cowboys, 1975-76 Baltimore Colts and 1974-75 Dolphins.
The Eagles also finished the regular season with franchise records in third-down conversion rate (45.9%, previously 45.7% in 2021) and red zone TD efficiency (67.8%, previously 66.7% in 2019).
Philadelphia finished the 2022 regular season with the No. 2 defense (301.5 ypg) in the NFL. The Eagles ranked 1st in sacks (70), opponent yards per play (4.78) and passing yards allowed per game (179.8). The defense also produced the 3rd-lowest opponent passer rating (81.6) and tied for 4th in both takeaways (27) and INTs (17).
The Eagles set a single-season franchise record with an NFL-leading 70 sacks. Since 1982, when sacks became an official statistic, only the 1984 Bears (72) and 1989 Vikings (71) have totaled more.
Philadelphia is the only NFL team since 1982 to have four different players record 10.0+ sacks in the same season – Haason Reddick (16.0), Brandon Graham (11.0), Javon Hargrave (11.0) and Josh Sweat (11.0).
Haason Reddick tied for the 2nd-most sacks (career-high 16.0) in the NFL, trailing only Nick Bosa (18.5). His 16.0 sacks are tied for the 3rdmost by any NFL player in their first season with a team, trailing only Shaquil Barrett with Tampa Bay in 2019 (19.5) and Bryce Paup with Buffalo in 1995 (17.5). Reddick, who also led the league with 5 strip sacks and 5 FFs (tied), became the first NFL player to produce 1.0+ sacks in three consecutive seasons with three different teams.
At age 34, Brandon Graham registered double-digit sacks (11.0) for the first time in his career. He is the oldest NFL player with 11.0+ sacks since Julius Peppers (age 37) and Terrell Suggs (age 35) in 2017.
Javon Hargrave recorded a career-high 11.0 sacks, which ranks 4th among NFL DTs this season, trailing Chris Jones (15.5), Quinnen Williams (12) and Daron Payne (11.5). Hargrave’s 11.0 sacks are the most by an Eagles DT since Andy Harmon in 1993 (11.5).
During the regular season, Jalen Hurts led the Eagles to a 14-1 record (.933 winning percentage) as a starter, completing 306-of-460 (66.5%) attempts for 3,701 yards (8.0 avg.), 22 TDs, 6 INTs and a 101.6 passer rating. He also rushed for 760 yards and 13 TDs. In total, Hurts combined for 4,461 yards and 35 TDs in his third NFL campaign.
Hurts became the fourth NFL QB since 2000 to lead his team to 14+ wins while registering 35+ total TDs and 8-or-fewer giveaways, joining Patrick Mahomes (2020), Aaron Rodgers (2011) and Tom Brady (2010). At 24 years old, he became the second youngest QB in NFL history to win 14+ games, trailing only Dan Marino with Miami in 1984 (23).
Hurts tied the Eagles’ single-season record with 35 total TDs (also Randall Cunningham in 1990), which ranked 4th in the NFL, behind Mahomes (45), Josh Allen (42) and Joe Burrow (40). He also led the NFL in 20+ yard TDs (15). His 13 rushing TDs are the 2nd-most by a QB in league history, trailing only Cam Newton in 2011 (14).
Among NFL QBs with at least 500 pass attempts, Hurts finished 2nd in passer rating (101.5), yards per pass attempt (8.1) and TD/INT ratio (3.7). He also averaged the 3rd-most total yards per game (297.4), trailing only Mahomes (329.9) and Allen (315.3) in that category.
A.J. Brown (career-high 1,496 receiving yards) and DeVonta Smith (career-high 1,196 receiving yards) are the first 1,000+ yard receiving duo in franchise history. Brown and Smith joined Miami’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as the only receiving duo in the NFL to record 1,100+ receiving yards and 7+ TDs each this season.
Brown’s career-high 1,496 receiving yards finished 4th in the league behind Justin Jefferson (1,809), Tyreek Hill (1,710) and Davante Adams (1,516). In his first season with the Eagles, Brown set a single-season franchise record with 1,496 receiving yards, surpassing the previous mark owned by Mike Quick in 1983 (1,409).
Brown also tied for 3rd in the NFL with a career-high-tying 11 receiving TDs (also 2020), behind Davante Adams (14) and Travis Kelce (12). He also averaged 17.0 yards per catch, a figure that ranked 2nd in the league, trailing only Jaylen Waddle (18.1) (min. 50 catches).
DeVonta Smith finished his second NFL season with 95 receptions, which are the most by a WR in Eagles history, eclipsing the previous mark owned by Irving Fryar in 1996 (88).
Miles Sanders finished the regular season as one of three NFL RBs to produce 1,200+ rushing yards (career-high 1,269, 5th in NFL), 11+ rushing TDs (career-high 11) and a 4.5+ rushing average (4.9) this season, joining Josh Jacobs and Nick Chubb. He also became the third Eagles RB to record 1,200+ rushing yards and 10+ rushing TDs in a season, joining Ricky Watters (1995, 1996) and LeSean McCoy (2011).
Jason Kelce, who has started 139 consecutive regular-season games (longest active streak among NFL centers and the 2nd-longest streak ever in Eagles history), was named first-team All-Pro for the fifth time in his career. Since 1970, only three NFL centers have been first-team All-Pro five times: Dermontti Dawson (six), Mike Webster and Kelce. Dawson and Webster are both Pro Football Hall of Famers.
According to Pro Football Focus, Lane Johnson has not allowed a sack since Week 11 of 2020 or a QB hit since Week 7 of 2021.
Despite missing five games due to injury, Dallas Goedert ranked 2nd among all league TEs in yards per reception (12.8), trailing only Jordan Akins (13.4). Goedert also finished 3rd in yards after the catch (420), behind Travis Kelce (648) and Evan Engram (465), as well as 3rd in 20+ yard receptions (11), behind Kelce (19) and George Kittle (12).
T.J. Edwards registered a career-high 159 total tackles, which finished 7th overall in the league. His 159 tackles are the 2nd-most by an Eagle in the last 31 seasons, trailing Byron Evans in 1992 (175).
James Bradberry finished with the 3rd-lowest passer rating allowed in the NFL (55.9) (min. 50 targets) and posted the 3rd-most PDs (17). Bradberry and Darius Slay are the only CB tandem in the league to both produce 14+ PDs and 3+ INTs.
 
Fun Fact
Although they are called the San Francisco 49ers, they don't play in San Francisco. Levi Stadium, home of the 49ers, is located in Santa Clara, California. Santa Clara is approximately 45 miles from San Francisco, whereas San Jose is only five miles away. San Jose is also the larger city, with over one million people living there.
 
A Trip through Time
For this week’s Trip through Time, let's go to one of the more memorable games I watched between these two teams, mainly due to an injury which occurred in the game which we will get to later. Donovan McNabb broke his ankle the previous week against the Cardinals. Eagles coach Andy Reid initially called former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman to ask him to come out of retirement and become the Eagles' starter with Donovan McNabb injured, but Aikman declined. So it was up to Koy Detmer, making his first start in 3 years to keep the season going on Monday Night Football against the 49ers. The game did not start on a high note for Detmer, who on the Eagles' first play from scrimmage, stumbled to one knee untouched on a routine dropback, then got sacked by Andre Carter at the 1. Jim Johnson's defense held San Francisco in check and the game was a stalemate until Detmer got his bearings and led a 90-yard scoring drive. Reid's plan included plenty of reverses, play-action and misdirection -- anything to keep the Niners' defense off balance and take the pressure off the backup QB. It worked: Detmer found Pinkston with a 25-yard TD pass early in the second quarter, and Detmer celebrated with a chest bump that knocked him flat on his ass. Brian Mitchell followed it up with a 76-yard punt return touchdown (his NFL-record 13th) to make it 14–0 Philadelphia. After the 49ers scored on a Terrell Owens touchdown reception, Detmer made it 21–7 with a touchdown strike to Antonio Freeman. Detmer dove the ball in himself in the third quarter to open up a 28–10 lead for the Eagles and Detmer did his patented slapping of the towel celebration. Detmer was in the zone until he landed with all of his weight on his left arm as Chike Okeafor knocked him to the ground following a 24 yards pass to Jeff Thompson. The hit dislocated Detmer’s elbow in one of the grosser injuries I can recall in an Eagles game. Detmer was carted off after being wished well by both teams. AJ Feely, the Eagles 3rd string QB came into the game and threw a TD pass to Chad Lewis to put the Eagles up 35-10. The 49ers would cut the lead down to 18 at the end of the third with a Terrell Owen TD reception from Jeff Garcia, but the Eagles defense held on in the 4th and the eagles added FG for good measure to put them up 3 possessions to close out the game.

The More You Know
Finding Some Middle Ground
According to Football Outsiders’ database, the Eagles defense ranks 23rd in DVOA on passes directed to the short middle range of the field. Meanwhile, Kyle Shanahan’s offense stresses the middle of the field with RBs and TEs with an overwhelming majority of Brock Dick Purdy’s passes going to the short middle (24.9% - PFF). Short middle is also where Purdy has suffered the clear highest number of drops (5). The Eagles D is also 24th in DVOA covering RBs and have struggled against 21 personnel this season, with a DVOA of 13.1%. This would have ranked near the bottom of the league over a full season. The few good plays the Giants managed last week before the game became a blowout also came with two backs in the backfield. How will Eagles DC Gannon, with assistance from 2 of Purdy’s former college defensive coaches D.K. McDonald (assistant DBs coach) and Tyler Scudder (defensive assistant), defend against this? For what it’s worth, Eagles MLB TJ Edwards is PFF’s 9th best coverage LB, while Kyzir White ranks 31st. On the flip side, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw are playing at a high level in coverage, the 4th and 7th best PFF-graded LBs, but are also 13th and 16th in YAC allowed. Warner is also 2nd for LBs in Forced Incompletion % (16). What could this mean for the Eagles Offense? According to Football Outsiders, the 49ers' 36.6% DVOA against deep shots ranks 24th in the league, and is a ticking time bomb. I think this could be a huge AJ Brown game. Use that to open up other elements. I mean, he does have a 99.9 PFF grade on deep throws…
 
Matchups to Watch
Eagles Pass Defense vs Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy, this years “Mr. Irrelevant has done a great job filling in for the injured Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo in the second half of the season. He is 7-0 as a starter, but has not faced a defense or a pass rush like the Eagles yet in his young career. The Eagles have 75 sacks this season including the playoffs with 4 different players having over 10 sacks (Reddick[17.5], Sweat[12.5], Graham[12], Hargrave[11]) and Cox isn’t far behind with 8. Purdy also has only played two road games, both in the regular season with neither being as hostile an environment as the Linc, which will be bumping on Sunday. Last time the Eagles were in the NFCCG, the environment played a big role in changing the game, when Case Keenum threw a pick and the crowd erupted and were in Keenum’s head the remainder of the game. The Eagles will need to do the same with Purdy and make him uncomfortable early and force some mistakes. The 49ers have a very good OL, but the Cowboys were able to get to Purdy last week and were able to limit the 49ers offense. If the Eagles can get home and rattle Purdy it could absolutely change the game. Purdy struggled on the road in college going 21-3 at home, but just 5-9 on the road. The Eagles will need to get in his face and get their arms up to disrupt throwing lanes. The Eagles will also need to force him into throws he isn’t comfortable in making and get him moving. Purdy is at his best throwing to the middle of the field. The Eagles should look to take that away and force him to the outside against the Eagles talented corners.
AJ Brown and Devonta Smith vs Charvarius Ward and Decommodore Lenoir
The 49ers have a great defense, but their corners are definitely a weak spot on the outside. Ward has a passer rating of 93.2 when targeted and Lenoir is slightly better at 85.7. If there is a place to attack the 49ers it is definitely outside, where when the 49ers have faced speedy WRs they have struggled. These are the WRs who had big games vs this secondary: Sutton - 8 receptions 97 yards, Kupp 8 receptions,79 yards and TD, Lockett 9 receptions 107 yards, Kupp 14 receptions 122 yards, Smith-Schuster 7 receptions 127s TD, Valdes-Scantling 3 receptions 111 yards, Dortch 9 receptions 103 yards, Hopkins 9 receptions for 91 yards, Hill 9 receptions 146 yards and 1 TD, Devante Adams 7 receptions 153 yards and 2 TDs, Metcalf 10 receptions 136s 2 TDs, CD Lamb 10 receptions 117 yards. That's a pretty lot of big games against opposing WRs, the key was the 49ers were usually able to limit those to a single player hurting them outside of the two Chiefs WRs where Kelce also had a big game and they were able to run the ball. The Eagles do have two very talented WRs in Brown and Smith who combined for 2692 and 18 TDs this season. Brown is due for a game and after some frustration last game, don’t be surprised to see him get involved early on this one. Smith may be the scarier option for the 49ers though, who have struggled against speed on the outside and have given up a number of big deep catches this year. If the Eagles are able to protect Hurts and start attacking the outside and forcing the 49ers to focus on stopping it, it will open up the middle of the field for Goedert and allow the run game to get going which will open up the entire playbook for the Eagles.
Jalen Hurts against Demeco Ryans
Demeco Ryans got the best of Jalen Hurts in their first meeting last season in week 2, but Hurts is a different QB and he has a different supporting cast behind him. Since that game Hurts has quite a few more starts under his belts after two seasons as a starter, same with WR Devonta Smith and the Eagles also added Pro Bowl WR AJ Brown in the offseason who has clicked with Hurts immediately. Ryans will undoubtedly try to confuse Hurts with coverages and make him question what he is seeing by moving Fred Warner up and back on the line. Hurts has been great this year especially improving on the mental side and as a passer and that will need to continue on Sunday. Hurts needs to take what this defense gives him and be smart with the football, the 49ers defense can wreak havoc and was great at causing turnovers this year and turnovers are one thing in common across the Eagles 3 losses. The Eagles need to protect the ball in this game and can’t beat themselves against this team. Hurts also needs to keep this defense honest and use his legs against them. In the 49ers 4 losses this season, they all came against mobile QBs, not necessarily running QBs, but ones that can buy time which Hurts can do well. If Hurts can buy time or there are broken plays, the Eagles have the talent at WR to get open against these corners. Hurts just needs to recognize the defense and make the smart decisions
49ers Rushing Attack vs the Eagles Run Defense
Much has been made about the Eagles and their rush defense throughout the season, though the run defense has been much improved since the Eagles added veterans Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh to the rotation and got rookie Jordan Davis back from injury. People keep citing their low run stats such as their 21st ranked run DVOA and 22nd ranked EPA/run, yet many of these people are failing to notice adding two veterans like Suh and Joseph and getting a big first round pick back into the fold really helps your run defense. The Eagles EPA/run was ranked 8th in the games following the additions of those players to the interior line. The Eagles were largely able to shutdown the Giants rush offense last week and many of the yards they did get were late in the game where Gannon was content to allow the Giants to help run out the clock. That said, the 49ers have two talented RBs in McCaffrey and Mitchell to go along with a great OL and can also run it to Deebo Samuel as well. The Eagles need to take the same approach this week as they did against the Giants and stop the run and force Purdy to beat them with his arm. The Eagles will need to be quick to the ball, gang tackle and take away cutback lanes to ensure they are limiting big runs and are able to force the 49ers into obvious passing situations on third down to let their pass rush do their thing. They can’t let the 49ers get into easy 3rd and short situations or it could be a long day.
Eagles OL vs the 49ers DL
The Eagles OL has been one of their strengths all year and they looked good against the Giants dominating the line of scrimmage all day. The Eagles ran all over them, with little the Giants could do to stop them. The Eagles will have a much bigger test this week though when they take on the 49ers DL which is much more talented highlighted by DPOY favorite Nick Bosa, who led the league in sacks this season. Bosa is the star, but they have talent across the line with former first round picks Javon Kinlaw and Arik Armstead manning the middle of the line. The Eagles need to be most aware of Bosa though who will be lining up against Mailata and Lane Johnson, who is still dealing with an injury. Even with the injury, Lane looked like himself last week where according to PFF, Johnson had 26 reps in pass protection against the Giants and didn’t give up a single pressure. Nick Bosa is on a whole nother level than Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari though and Johnson needs to be on his game again this week. If the OL can move the 49ers DL and get to the next level to get the run game going early it will go a long way in tipping the odds in the Eagles favor as the Eagles are best when they are able to run the football. Of course that will be no easy task against the league's best run defense. In the pass blocking area, if the Eagles are able to give Hurts time, he should be able to find Brown and Smith on the outside where the 49ers corners have struggled against the deep ball this season. This game will be won in the trenches though and this is a key matchup.

The Eagles will face a familiar foe as they take on their oldest rival in the Divisional Round of the Playoffs this week when the Giants make the trip down I95 to the Linc. Saturday marks the third meeting of the 2022 season between the Giants and the Eagles, with Philadelphia winning the first two games. The Giants and Eagles have met three times in a single season on four occasions - 2008, 2006, 2000 and 1981. The playoff series is currently tied 2-2 with The Eagles winning in 2008 and 2006 and the Giants winning in 2000 and 1981. The Eagles recent success against the Giants is well documented, the Eagles are 11-2 in the last 13 meetings with the Eagles winning the last 3 games, though the last one is rather pointless to mention with the Giants resting a majority of their starters. The Eagles are also 9-0 against the Giants at the Linc dating back to the 2014 season. The Eagles will hope that streak will go to 10-0 Saturday Night. When teams play each other three times in the same season, teams are 14-7 in attempts to beat a team three times in the same season all-time. The Giants are sure to put up a fight thought, they are a team no one expected to be here when the season started, but head coach Brian Daboll has done a tremendous job in getting his team prepared each week and has gotten the most out of his roster. The Giants upset the Vikings last week in Minnesota and will look to play spoiler again this week. On paper the Eagles have the better roster, but this is a divisional matchup in the playoffs, so the Eagles need to be on their toes. On offense they need to stay with a balanced attack and do it early. Sirianni and Stichen can’t do what they have done in recent weeks where they don’t even give Sanders the ball until the 2nd quarter. They need to get him and Giant Killer, Boston Scott, involved early to keep the Giants guessing and keep the pass rush off Hurts who is still recovering from his shoulder injury which forced him to miss two of the final three games. On defense the Eagles need to stay disciplined and stay in their rush lanes to prevent Jones from sneaking out of the pocket for big runs. In the secondary, the Eagles will be without Maddox who will miss the game with a toe injury so expect CJ Gardner Johnson to line up in the slot in key passing situations now that he is back from a ruptured kidney he sustained in week 12. The Eagles secondary should have the advantage over the Giants receivers and they will not be running wide open like they were against the Vikings where the WRs were perfectly covered on just 20% of the plays which is 14% below the league average this year. In this game they will be facing two corners who have been great all season in Darius Slay and former Giant James Bradberry. If the Eagles can lock down the receivers and force Jones to hold the ball the Eagles pass rush should be able to get home against the Giants OL which PFF ranked 30th on the season. The Eagles need to get back to forcing turnovers and this could be the game to kickstart it back up and jump start the playoff run. Should be a good game. Go Birds!

The Eagles clinched home-field advantage and a first-round bye with a 22-16 win over the New York Giants, who played mostly backups due to already clinching the No. 6 seed last week. The Eagles played an extremely vanilla offense most of the game with Hurts mainly just running and ducking out of bounds whenever he was chased from the pocket in order to protect his shoulder which was still sore in the game. Jake Elloitt was 5/5 for FGs in the game and added an extra point in the conservative play-calling by Sirianni in the 22-16 win for the Eagles. Philadelphia finishes the season 14-3

The Eagles took a trip up I95 to take on their division rival the NY Football Giants in a matchup of two teams going in different directions. The Eagles were on a 3 games win streak going into the Game where the Giants hadn’t put up a W in a few weeks. That trend continued Sunday as the Eagles came out and dominated both sides of the football. Hurts improved his MVP credentials by throwing for 217 yards and hitting DaVonta Smith on a 41-yard fourth-down TD strike and A.J. Brown on a 33-yarder as the Eagles (12-1) scored on their first three possessions. The third-year quarterback also ran for 77 yards, highlighted by a 10-yard TD scamper late in the third quarter. Miles Sanders also ran for 144 yards, scored on runs of 3 and 40 yards and hit the 1,000-yard mark for the season (1,068) as the Eagles handed the Giants their worst loss under first-year coach Brian Daboll. Jake Elliott kicked two field goals and the defense finished with seven sacks, including three by Brandon Graham as the Eagles clinched a playoff berth in their second consecutive seasons.

Eagles were on bye during the wild card due to being the number 1 seed.

The Giants took on the Minnesota Vikings with their 13-4 record, however 11 of those wins were by a score of less including one earlier this season against the Giants. The Giants must have taken notes during their first matchup with the Vikings and took them to town in the Wild Card round. The Giants dominated the Vikings defense with Daniel Jones passing for 301 yards and two touchdowns while running for 78 yards in his first career playoff game. Saquan Barkley also had a nice game for the Giants rushing for 2 scores including the tiebreaker midway through the 4th quarter. The Vikings did have a chance to tie the game late, but Kirk Cousins was his typical self and choked on the big stage. The Vikings had the ball on their 46 yard line when it was 4th and 8 and Cousins inexplicably checked it down to his TE who was tackled short of the yard to gain and turned it over on downs allowing the Giants to run out the clock. The Giants handed the Vikings their first one possession loss of the season winning 31-24.

Philadelphia is the No. 1 seed in the NFC Playoffs for the fifth time in franchise history, having previously done so in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2017. The Eagles’ five No. 1 seeds since 2000 are the 2nd-most by any NFL team in that span, trailing only New England (seven).
Philadelphia is the first team in NFL history to secure two No. 1 seeds over a five-year span with different head coach/QB combos.
The Eagles captured their 10th NFC East crown under Jeffrey Lurie’s ownership (most in the division since 2001) and established a single-season franchise mark with 14 wins this season. Philadelphia finished tied with Kansas City for the NFL’s best record (14-3).

The Eagles also finished the regular season with franchise records in third-down conversion rate (45.9%, previously 45.7% in 2021) and red zone TD efficiency (67.8%, previously 66.7% in 2019).
During the regular season, Jalen Hurts led the Eagles to a 14-1 record (.933 winning percentage) as a starter, completing 306-of-460 (66.5%) attempts for 3,701 yards (8.0 avg.), 22 TDs, 6 INTs and a 101.6 passer rating. He also rushed for 760 yards and 13 TDs. In total, Hurts combined for 4,461 yards and 35 TDs in his third NFL campaign.
Hurts became the fourth NFL QB since 2000 to lead his team to 14+ wins while registering 35+ total TDs and 8-or-fewer giveaways, joining Patrick Mahomes (2020), Aaron Rodgers (2011) and Tom Brady (2010). At 24 years old, he became the second youngest QB in NFL history to win 14+ games, trailing only Dan Marino with Miami in 1984 (23).
Hurts tied the Eagles’ single-season record with 35 total TDs (also Randall Cunningham in 1990), which ranked 4th in the NFL, behind Mahomes (45), Josh Allen (42) and Joe Burrow (40). He also led the NFL in 20+ yard TDs (15). His 13 rushing TDs are the 2nd-most by a QB in league history, trailing only Cam Newton in 2011 (14).
Among NFL QBs with at least 500 pass attempts, Hurts finished 2nd in passer rating (101.5), yards per pass attempt (8.1) and TD/INT ratio (3.7). He also averaged the 3rd-most total yards per game (297.4), trailing only Mahomes (329.9) and Allen (315.3) in that category.
A.J. Brown (career-high 1,496 receiving yards) and DeVonta Smith (career-high 1,196 receiving yards) are the first 1,000+ yard receiving duo in franchise history. Brown and Smith joined Miami’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as the only receiving duo in the NFL to record 1,100+ receiving yards and 7+ TDs each this season.
Brown’s career-high 1,496 receiving yards finished 4th in the league behind Justin Jefferson (1,809), Tyreek Hill (1,710) and Davante Adams (1,516). In his first season with the Eagles, Brown set a single-season franchise record with 1,496 receiving yards, surpassing the previous mark owned by Mike Quick in 1983 (1,409).
Brown also tied for 3rd in the NFL with a career-high-tying 11 receiving TDs (also 2020), behind Davante Adams (14) and Travis Kelce (12). He also averaged 17.0 yards per catch, a figure that ranked 2nd in the league, trailing only Jaylen Waddle (18.1) (min. 50 catches).
DeVonta Smith finished his second NFL season with 95 receptions, which are the most by a WR in Eagles history, eclipsing the previous mark owned by Irving Fryar in 1996 (88).
Miles Sanders finished the regular season as one of three NFL RBs to produce 1,200+ rushing yards (career-high 1,269, 5th in NFL), 11+ rushing TDs (career-high 11) and a 4.5+ rushing average (4.9) this season, joining Josh Jacobs and Nick Chubb. He also became the third Eagles RB to record 1,200+ rushing yards and 10+ rushing TDs in a season, joining Ricky Watters (1995, 1996) and LeSean McCoy (2011).
Jason Kelce, who has started 139 consecutive regular-season games (longest active streak among NFL centers and the 2nd-longest streak ever in Eagles history), was named first-team All-Pro for the fifth time in his career. Since 1970, only three NFL centers have been first-team All-Pro five times: Dermontti Dawson (six), Mike Webster and Kelce. Dawson and Webster are both Pro Football Hall of Famers.
According to Pro Football Focus, Lane Johnson has not allowed a sack since Week 11 of 2020 or a QB hit since Week 7 of 2021.
Despite missing five games due to injury, Dallas Goedert ranked 2nd among all league TEs in yards per reception (12.8), trailing only Jordan Akins (13.4). Goedert also finished 3rd in yards after the catch (420), behind Travis Kelce (648) and Evan Engram (465), as well as 3rd in 20+ yard receptions (11), behind Kelce (19) and George Kittle (12).
Philadelphia finished the 2022 regular season with the No. 2 defense (301.5 ypg) in the NFL. The Eagles ranked 1st in sacks (70), opponent yards per play (4.78) and passing yards allowed per game (179.8). The defense also produced the 3rd-lowest opponent passer rating (81.6) and tied for 4th in both takeaways (27) and INTs (17).
The Eagles set a single-season franchise record with an NFL-leading 70 sacks. Since 1982, when sacks became an official statistic, only the 1984 Bears (72) and 1989 Vikings (71) have totaled more.
Philadelphia is the only NFL team since 1982 to have four different players record 10.0+ sacks in the same season – Haason Reddick (16.0), Brandon Graham (11.0), Javon Hargrave (11.0) and Josh Sweat (11.0).
Haason Reddick tied for the 2nd-most sacks (career-high 16.0) in the NFL, trailing only Nick Bosa (18.5). His 16.0 sacks are tied for the 3rdmost by any NFL player in their first season with a team, trailing only Shaquil Barrett with Tampa Bay in 2019 (19.5) and Bryce Paup with Buffalo in 1995 (17.5). Reddick, who also led the league with 5 strip sacks and 5 FFs (tied), became the first NFL player to produce 1.0+ sacks in three consecutive seasons with three different teams.
At age 34, Brandon Graham registered double-digit sacks (11.0) for the first time in his career. He is the oldest NFL player with 11.0+ sacks since Julius Peppers (age 37) and Terrell Suggs (age 35) in 2017.
Javon Hargrave recorded a career-high 11.0 sacks, which ranks 4th among NFL DTs this season, trailing Chris Jones (15.5), Quinnen Williams (12) and Daron Payne (11.5). Hargrave’s 11.0 sacks are the most by an Eagles DT since Andy Harmon in 1993 (11.5).
T.J. Edwards registered a career-high 159 total tackles, which finished 7th overall in the league. His 159 tackles are the 2nd-most by an Eagle in the last 31 seasons, trailing Byron Evans in 1992 (175).
James Bradberry finished with the 3rd-lowest passer rating allowed in the NFL (55.9) (min. 50 targets) and posted the 3rd-most PDs (17). Bradberry and Darius Slay are the only CB tandem in the league to both produce 14+ PDs and 3+ INTs.
Jake Elliott converted 5-of-5 FGs from 22, 32, 39, 52 and 54 in Week 18 vs. the Giants, setting a new career-high in FGs and recording a career-high-tying 16 points. He became the second player in team history to make two 50+ yard FGs in a game, joining Paul McFadden in 1984.

A Trip through Time
For this week’s Trip through Time, let’s go back and look at the last time these two franchises faced off in the playoffs, which also happened to be a Divisional Round Game in 2008. Coming into the game the Giants were the top seed in the NFC and the defending Super Bowl champions. However, they had stumbled across the finish line of the regular season, losing three of their final four games including one at home to the Eagles. The Eagles finished 9-6-1 and were coming off (coincidentally) a wild card win against the Minnesota Vikings. Ahmad Bradshaw returned the opening kickoff to the Eagle 35-yard line and the Giants finished the drive with a 22-yard John Carney field goal. On the first play of New York's next drive, Asante Samuel came up with another big playoff interception for the Eagles, returning the ball inside the New York 5-yard line. Donovan McNabb stretched the ball over the plane for a touchdown on a quarterback sneak as Philadelphia took a 7–3 lead. New York punter Jeff Feagles pinned the Eagles deep in their own territory early in the second quarter, and the Giants defense forced McNabb into committing an intentional grounding penalty from his own endzone, giving the Giants a safety. Carney missed from 46 yards on the ensuing New York possession, but he was good from 34 yard on the next possession as New York went ahead 8–7. The Eagles' offense finally got on track on their last possession of the half, driving down the field and getting a 25-yard field goal by David Akers to take a 10–8 lead to the locker room. New York defensive lineman Fred Robbins came up with an interception of McNabb early in the third quarter, and New York retook the lead on a field goal. Philadelphia responded with an impressive drive highlighted by McNabb finding slot receiver Jason Avant for a 21-yard gain on 3rd-and-20 and running back Correll Buckhalter for 19 yards on 3rd-and-10. The drive ended in a short field goal and the Eagles led 13–11. Carney missed a 47-yarder on the next drive, and the Eagles capitalized with a 10-play drive capped with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brent Celek. Early in the fourth quarter, on 4th-and-1 from the Giant 44-yard line, Eli Manning was stuffed on a quarterback sneak. On the next drive, the Eagles defensive line stopped Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs on third and fourth down. After the ball turned over on downs, McNabb placed a 48-yard bomb to DeSean Jackson. A field goal followed and the Eagles took a 23–11 lead. Quintin Mikell's interception of Manning essentially ended the game allowing the Eagles to run the clock down to 2:19 and force the Giants to use their final timeout with a comfortable two possession lead. Steve Smith fumbled on the following possession allowing the Eagles to kneel it the rest of the way and advance to the NFC Championship game where they fell to the Cardinals.

Hooboy. Ok, Evan Neal. We’re going to talk about Evan Neal today. Eventually. If I can stop audibly chuckling at the absolute world of hurt Evan’s in for going up against Brandon Graham and Haason Reddick this Saturday evening. Anyone here watch the Week 14 matchup between these teams? How about last week’s Giants game against the Vikings? *Note from management to Giants fans:this is the point where you just cross your eyes like you’re deeply looking into an autostereogram. Go ahead. Call it a mental health timeout as you pre-empt a recurring nightmare between now and the end of the game. Ok, back to it. Let’s dig into the juicy stuff. In the regular season, he was PFF’s 3rd-worst Right Tackle on a pass blocking efficiency basis (per snap basis, weighted toward sacks). Of 45 RTs that had an appreciable number of snaps (20% of the snap count of the player with the most RT snaps this season, or 237 minimum), Evan Neal had a 94.6 pass block efficiency, having allowed 39 total pressures over 453 pass block snaps, 10 QB hits (last), 7 sacks (2nd-worst), and had the 5th lowest pass block grade at the position (47.5). Last week, he allowed the most pressures of the playing RTs (8), 1 sack and 7 hurries, and received the worst pass block grade by far (19.4). Week 14 against us? 20.2 pass block grade, 1 sack, 2 hits, 5 hurries. BG and Reddick combined for 5 sacks and 10 hurries. Reddick did amass the 2nd-most number of pressures on the defensive left side (62), while Graham had the 4th-highest Win Rate % of *all DEs, and PFF gave them the 4th and 5th highest Pass Rush grades for DEs (91.2 for Reddick and 90.5 for BG). They were 1st and 4th in the regular season for sacks (16 and 11). Tune in, it’s going to be good.
 
Matchups to Watch
Eagles Pass Rush vs the Giants OL
The Eagles pass rush led the league with 70 sacks, 7 of which came against the Giants in the week 14 matchup between the teams where the Eagles sacked Jones 4 times and backup Taylor 3 times in a 48-22 rout. The Eagles can create pressure all across the line, evident by the fact the Eagles became the first team to ever have 4 different linemen with 10+ sacks, they also broke the Eagles record for most sacks in a season. Getting pressure on Jones while keeping him contained will be a big key to this game. The Eagles were able to do that pretty well in the week 14 matchup where they got to him 4 times and limited him to just 26 yards on the ground on 4 rushes. A big part of this was the Eagles staying in their rush lanes and not getting too far upfield to give Jones an opportunity to run. If the Eagles can make Jones uncomfortable in the pocket and force him into mistakes it will go a long way in tilting the game in favor of the Eagles
Nick Sirianni and Shane Stiechen vs Themselves
Stiechen and Sirianni and their refusal to run the football the last few weeks of the season were a big reason the Eagles had to play their starters week 18 even if it was a very vanilla game plan against the Giants backups. The Eagles offense is at its best when it is a balanced attack as the running game opens up play-action and makes the RPO more dangerous. In week 15 vs the Bears and their 29th ranked run defense according to DVOA the Eagles refused to run the football to the running backs. Instead opting for Hurts to drop back 40 times and run the football 17 times compared to the 11 times by their Pro Bowl RB and 5 more by the other two running backs, all of this on a freezing cold and windy day in Chicago. The Eagles came away with a win, but lost Hurts to injury for the next two games. Then against the Saints last week and their 23rd ranked run defense, the two thought it was a brilliant idea to not run the ball until the second half and have the backup QB drop back 40 times instead of running the football with Sanders who was averaging 5.1 yards per carry in the game. The last time the offense was called in a balanced manner was week 14 against the Giants where Miles Sanders rushed for 144 yards, Hurts for 77 and Scott for 31 and the 3 combined for 4 rushing TDs. The Eagles also passed 31 times for 217 yards and 2 TDs in the game which the Eagles dominated from start to finish. This is the approach that Sirianni and Stichen need to remember works. They need to keep the offense balanced if they want to advance in the playoffs.
Eagles Passing Attack vs the Giants Pass Defense
Now that I have harped on the importance of running the ball and having a good game plan and balanced attack, the Eagles should certainly still throw the football. The Eagles have one of the best WRs duos in the league in Brown and Smith who both went over 1000 yards this season and the two 2692 yards and 18 TDs. The two both have big play ability to take it to the house on every possession and if you look at the WCB matchups in the earlier section, the Eagles have a big advantage over the Giants CBs. The two combined for 134 yards and 2 TDs in that game on the road to the Eagles most lopsided victory this season. The Eagles will also have Dallas Goedert this game who was missing in the week 14 matchup with a shoulder injury. If the Eagles can get the passing game humming with the rushing attack it could lead to some quick scoring drives that get the Eagles out ahead and force the Giants to play from behind. Playing from behind is not what the Giants want to do because their offense functions best when they are balanced and get Barkley going on the ground, but that offense is hard to run when you are down multiple scores. Look for the Eagles to look for some chunk plays early to get out in front.
Giants Rushing Attack vs the Eagles Run Defense
Much has been made about the Eagles and their rush defense throughout the season, though the run defense has been much improved since the Eagles added veterans Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh to the rotation and got rookie Jordan Davis back from injury. The Eagles will need to replicate what they did in the first matchup between these teams where they held Barkley to 28 yards on 9 carries and Jones to 26 yards on 4. The Eagles run defense needs to limit the Giants running attack on first and second down and force them into third and long which is somewhere they do not want to be with their 26th ranked pass defense. This is something the Eagles did quite well in week 14 where they forced the Giants into 3rd and 6+ yards on their first 4 possessions all of which ended in punts. If the Eagles can do the same and make the Giants one dimensional, it will be a key to the game as the Giants WRs will have a tough time getting open against the Eagles secondary especially with the pass rush the Eagles can generate with just 4 rushers.

The Eagles failed to clinch the NFC East the last two weeks against the Cowboys and Saints with Gardner Minshew at the helm. The game was winnable last week, however the coaching staff failed to account for having a backup QB starting and must have forgotten they had a Pro Bowl running back on the roster. In the game Steichen and Sirianni had Minshew drop back 40 times while just handing it off to Miles Sanders 12 times in the game including giving him zero touches in the first quarter. The Eagles were completely unprepared for the Saints game and it showed. The coaching staff needs to do a better job this weekend against the Giants and in the playoffs by utilizing the run game especially when it is working (Sanders was averaging 5.1 YPC against the Saints). Not only to keep the offense balanced, but to help protect Hurts from being injured again. Speaking of Hurts he looks to return this week against the rival Giants in hopes of clinching the NFCE and the number one seed in the playoffs to give the Eagles a first round bye. Hurts won’t be the only player who could potentially return to action, the Eagles also activated the practice windows of Robert Quinn and CJ Garnder Johnson who could provide a boost to the defense. This is especially true for CGJ who since he has gone out the secondary has not looked the same and the turnover numbers for the defense have dropped. Quinn would also like to make an impact and get in on the sack attack for the Eagles since they traded for him from the Bears. The Eagles will most likely face off against a Giants team that will be missing some key players since the Giants clinched the 6th seed in the playoffs and are locked in to that spot. Daboll has been silent on the topic, but reports out of the Giants practice tell us we most likely will not see guys like Saquan Barkley, Daniel Jones, Dexter Lawrence and more. This is great news for the Eagles, but they still need to win against the football team, the Giants have an experienced back up in Tyrod Taylor who will still be looking to win and the Giants staff will have their team prepared. For that reason the Eagles can not overlook this game as getting the bye week will be a big help for guys like Lane Johnson who plan to play in the playoffs and for Josh Sweat who is recovering from neck/shoulder injury suffered in last week's game. With Hurts back at least he will fit into the offense which was never changed to fit Minshew’s skill set. The coaching staff needs to learn on the run and keep the offense balanced this week and minimize hits on Hurts. Let’s hope the team is more prepared with a better game plan this week and get a W and a first round bye. Go Birds!

The Eagles took a trip up I95 to take on their division rival the NY Football Giants in a matchup of two teams going in different directions. The Eagles were on a 3 games win streak going into the Game where the Giants hadn’t put up a W in a few weeks. That trend continued Sunday as the Eagles came out and dominated both sides of the football. Hurts improved his MVP credentials by throwing for 217 yards and hitting DaVonta Smith on a 41-yard fourth-down TD strike and A.J. Brown on a 33-yarder as the Eagles (12-1) scored on their first three possessions. The third-year quarterback also ran for 77 yards, highlighted by a 10-yard TD scamper late in the third quarter. Miles Sanders also ran for 144 yards, scored on runs of 3 and 40 yards and hit the 1,000-yard mark for the season (1,068) as the Eagles handed the Giants their worst loss under first-year coach Brian Daboll. Jake Elliott kicked two field goals and the defense finished with seven sacks, including three by Brandon Graham as the Eagles clinched a playoff berth in their second consecutive seasons.

Jake Fromm made his first career NFL start as the Giants visited the Eagles seeking to even their all-time series and complete their first season sweep of Philadelphia since the 2007 season. Both teams got off to a slow start in what was making out to be a defensive stalemate.. However, miscues on both sides of the ball by Giants in the second half would lead to the Eagles blowing the game wide open. Fromm completed 6 of 17 passes for 25 yards and an interception before being benched in the third quarter for Mike Glennon. Glennon was an upgrade and would finish 17 of 27 for 93 yards with a garbage-time touchdown to Evan Engram. However, prior to that garbage time TD he had one to the other team when he threw a pick-six to Alex Singleton with 10 minutes left to put the Eagles up 31-3. Lane Johnson had his first career touchdown for the Eagles late in the game on a 5 yard pass from Jalen Hurts in the 4th quarter.

Recap from Last Week’s Games
Eagles
The Eagles were again without QB Jalen Hurts, though apparently the coaching staff was unaware he was missing from the offense and decided to have backup Gardner Minshew drop back 40 times against the number 4 ranked passing defense. The Eagles didn’t hand the ball off to pro bowl RB Miles Sanders til the middle of the second quarter and and refused to stick with him despite him averaging 5.1 yards per carry on his 12 attempts for 61 yards. The Eagles coaching staff came into this game with the worst possible game plan possible and it showed. The Saints rank 23rd against the run, yet the Eagles ran the ball less than 30% of the time against them despite the run game being effective. Additionally, the coaching staff tried to run the sneak play with the much smaller Minshew only to see it fail on 4th down. The only reason the game was even close was due to great play by the defense. After giving up a long TD drive on the opening drive they clamped down and played well sacking the Saints QBs multiple times. However poor play by the backup QB and an even worse offensive game plan by Sirianni and Stiechen led to an ugly loss by the Eagles when a win could have clinched them the number 1 seed.
Giants
The Giants took on the struggling Colts in week 17 with the playoffs on the line. The Giants dominated the game from start to finish on both sides of the ball. The Giants broke the game open with 24 points in the second quarter; Daniel Jones had two passing touchdowns then Landon Collins returned an interception for a touchdown. Jones added two more touchdowns with his legs in the second half, and it was the first game since his NFL debut that he finished with two passing and two rushing touchdowns. The Giants routed the Indianapolis Colts 38-10 Sunday to return to the postseason for the first time since 2016 clinching the 6th seed in the playoffs.

Fun Fact
The Giants were the first team to ever retire a jersey number. The number 1 was worn by end and assistant coach Ray Flaherty from 1928 to 1935. The jersey number was taken out of circulation when Flaherty left in 1935. After his years with the Giants, Flaherty went on to become the head coach for the Boston/Washington Redskins, where he never had a losing season. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976, he is credited with inventing the behind-the-line screen pass in 1937.
 
A Trip through Time
The Eagles and Giants faced off in a crucial divisional game that would pretty much crown the division winner in week 15 of the 2010 season. With just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Giants went up 21 points with an Eli Manning Touchdown to TE Kevin Boss in what should have put the game out of reach. The Eagles scored quickly on their next possession as Mike Vick hit Brent Celek on a 65 yard TD catch. On the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles caught the Giants off-guard with an onside kick which they recovered. A couple Vick runs and the Eagles were within a touchdown with over 5 minutes left the play. The Eagles defense came up with a big stop before Vick ran down the field multiple times on broken plays before hitting Maclin in the end zone on a TD pass. The Eagles defense was able to stand strong again forcing a Giants punt with 14 seconds left on the clock. I will pass it off to Mr. Reese again. “14 seconds to go. 31-31 Matt Dodge to punt. It's a high snap. He gets it away, it's a knuckler. Desean Jackson takes it at 35. He drops it! Picks it up. Looks for running room, he’s at the 40. He’s at the 45. Ohhh 40! Ohhh! He's gonna go. Desean Jackson, I don't care if he jumps, dives. He's running around. He is in the end zone and there's no time. The Eagles Win! The Eagles Win! He ran around til all the zeros were on the clock and the Giants fans can’t believe it. Eagles Pass Rush vs the Giants OL
The Eagles pass rush has been on fire the last few weeks amassing 6 or more sacks in each of the last 4 games, with the first in the streak being against the Giants where the Eagles sacked Daniel Jones 7 times in a 48-22 rout. With Graham passing 10 sacks last week the Eagles became the first team to ever have 4 different linemen with 10+ sacks, they also broke the Eagles record for most sacks in a season. The Eagles are now in striking distance of another sack record as they are just 5 sacks away from breaking the 1984 Bears record for most sacks in a season (granted they will be doing it in one additional game). The Eagles will most likely see Tyrod Taylor at QB, along with some other backups giving them the opportunity to feast and continue their streak of 6+sacks.
Eagles Offense vs themselves
The Eagles offense shooting themselves in the foot seems to be a common occurrence the last two weeks. Hopefully the return of Hurts can stop that trend. Turnovers have been a problem for the Eagles the last two weeks with Minshew at the helm, that should stop with Hurts who has done a good job of protecting the football this season. Hurts' more familiar cadence should also help curb some of the false start penalties that we saw stalling drives. The Eagles are the better football team and had their way with the Giants defense last time these two teams faced off, with the Giants most likely resting a number of starters the Eagles just need to play smart and protect the football and they should be able to pull out a win as long as they are not beating themselves.
Miles Sanders vs the Giants Run Defense
Sanders has been held in check the last three weeks, once by the Cowboys and the other two games by the coaching staff who refused to use him against the Bears and Saints which cost Jalen Hurts getting injured vs the Bears and a loss vs the Saints. Had the coaching staff used Sanders last week, we may be talking about resting our starters this week instead of it being a must win game. Sanders has had a great year which has led to a Pro Bowl nod for the RB after he has amassed 1236 yards and 11 TDs this season. Sanders had a huge game in week 14 running for 144 yards and 2 TDs in the Eagles win. The Eagles would be smart to lean on Sanders and the running backs again in this game to help keep Jalen Hurts upright and healthy for the playoffs. If the Eagles get the run game going and can get a nice lead against the Giants backups they may be able to put Hurts and some of the starters late in the game and run out the clock.
Nick Sirianni and Shane Stiechen vs Themselves
Stiechen and Sirianni and their refusal to run the football the last few weeks are a big reason the Eagles are not resting their starters with the number one seed locked up this week. In week 15 vs the Bears and their 29th ranked run defense according to DVOA the Eagles refused to run the football to the running backs. Instead opting for Hurts to drop back 40 times and run the football 17 times compared to the 11 times by their Pro Bowl RB and 5 more by the other two running backs, all of this on a freezing cold and windy day in Chicago. The Eagles came away with a win, but lost Hurts to injury for the next two games. Then against the Saints last week and their 23rd ranked run defense, the two thought it was a brilliant idea to not run the ball until the second half and have the backup QB drop back 40 times instead of running the football with Sanders who was averaging 5.1 yards per carry in the game. These two need to remember they have a great run blocking OL and a Pro Bowl running back on the roster this week and in the playoffs. The Eagles lose games when they lose the TOP battle and that occurs when we do not run the football. Add it to help limit hits on Hurts; it would be smart to run the ball. Lets see if these two can come up with a winning game plan that keeps our QB healthy this week. Hopefully it has a healthy dose of Sanders early and often and maybe a little bit of Scott and Gainwell mixed in as well.

Philadelphia Eagles (13-2) at the New Orleans Saints (6-9)
It looks like the Eagles will once again be without starting QB Jalen Hurts who is listed as doubtful for the game against the Saints as the Eagles look to clinch the number one seed in the playoffs with a win. That will be easier said than done though, the Saints still have a top defense which allows them to hang in games and play people tight. Additionally, the Saints have a lot to play for as they are still in the playoff hunt in the terrible NFC South where no team has a winning record. The Eagles are the better team on paper, but can’t shoot themselves in the football like they did last week which cost them the football game and their chance to clinch the division against their rival. Still the Eagles control their own destiny and only need to win one of their remaining two games to take the division and the first round bye in the playoffs. The Eagles need to stop the Saints rushing attack and force them to pass, they are depleted at WR with Landry and Thomas on the IR and Olave banged up and Questionable. If the Eagles can stop the run they should have a definitive advantage both with their pass rush and their secondary vs the Saints. On offense the Eagles should look to run against the Saints 23rd ranked rush defense as opposed to passing against the Saints secondary. That said Brown and Smith are coming off back to back 100 yard games and have been amazing against whoever they have gone up against including the Cowboys Pro Bowl corner Trevon Diggs. The biggest thing for the Eagles offense will be protecting the football, they had multiple opportunities to win against Dallas last week and shot themselves in the foot with bad and costly turnovers. If the Eagles can stop the run and protect the football they should be able to clinch the division and rest up for a playoff run next week and in the first round with a bye. The Philadelphia Eagles stuck to their run-first approach and dominated the NFL's top-ranked rushing defense. Jalen Hurts ran for three touchdowns, Darius Slay returned an interception for a score and the Eagles beat the New Orleans Saints 40-29 on Sunday. Miles Sanders ran for 94 yards, Hurts had 69, Jordan Howard added 63 and the Eagles racked up 242 yards on the ground against a team that allowed 72.9 yards rushing per game. The Eagles have surpassed 175 yards rushing in four straight games, including 200-plus in three victories in that span. The Eagles were able to survive a late push by the Saints, but the Eagles offense was too much.

The Eagles traveled to Dallas to take on the Cowboys without their starting QB Jalen Hurts who was missing the game with a strained shoulder suffered the previous week. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew started the Eagles' road finale against the arch-rival Cowboys in place of Hurts. Despite a solid performance by Minshew, Philadelphia was doomed by a season-high four turnovers, all of which led to scoring drives for Dallas who came away with a close win.
Saints
Playing in the coldest game in franchise history with the wind-chill temperature in negative digits and with their faint playoff hopes on the line, the New Orleans Saints rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland Browns 17-10 on Saturday at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. Eliminating the Browns and their rapist QB from playoff contention. The Saints (6-9), who have their first winning streak of the season, are tied with Carolina (6-9) for second place in the NFC South, a half- game behind Tampa (6-8). The Buccaneers play at Arizona (4-10) on Sunday. The Saints need to win their final two games and get some help to win the division.

A.J. Brown (career-high 1,304) and DeVonta Smith (career-high 1,014) are the first 1,000+ yard receiving duo in franchise history. The only other NFL tandem with 1,000+ receiving yards each so far this season is Miami’s Tyreek Hill (1,632) and Jaylen Waddle (1,260).
Brown and Smith have both posted 100+ receiving yards in the same game in 3 of the last 4 contests, including back-to-back weeks. They are the first Eagles duo to accomplish that feat in consecutive games since Brent Celek and DeSean Jackson during the 2009 campaign.

Philadelphia leads the NFL with 61 sacks, which is 1 QB takedown shy of the Eagles’ single-season record (62 in 1989). The Eagles, who also rank 1st in the league in sacks per pass attempt (12.4%), are the only NFL team since 1982 to have 6+ sacks in 4 consecutive games.
Philadelphia is the third NFL team since 1982 to have three players – Haason Reddick (14.0), Josh Sweat (11.0) and Javon Hargrave (10.0) – each record 10.0+ sacks in a season, joining the 1985 Raiders and 1989 Vikings. If Brandon Graham (9.0) records a sack on Sunday, the Eagles would become the first defense to have four such players.

Miles Sanders is tied for the 4th-most rushing TDs (career-high 11) among NFL RBs, trailing only Jamaal Williams (14), Derrick Henry (13) and Nick Chubb (12). T.J. Edwards ranks 8th in the NFL (3rd in NFC) with a career-high 138 tackles, which are the 3rd-most by an Eagle since 1991, trailing only Byron Evans in 1992 (175) and Andre Waters in 1991 (156).

Fun Fact
The Eagles have three interception return TDs in franchise history against the Saints and all three were by Eric Allen. In the 1992 playoff game, Allen picked off Hebert in that 26-point fourth quarter and returned it 18 yards for a TD. And in a 37-26 Eagles win late in the 1993 season Allen picked off Walsh twice, returning the INTs 33 yards in the third quarter and 25 yards in the fourth quarter for touchdowns. Allen is the only player ever with three INT return TDs vs. the Saint.
 
A Trip through Time
In 1993, the Eagles finished second in the division at 11-5 behind the Dallas Cowboy and faced off against the Saints in the wild card round of the playoffs. The Saints struck first with a 1 yard run by Craig Heyward, but the Eagles answered with a 57 yard TD pass by Randall Cunningham in the first quarter. After that though the Eagles offense went silent and it was all Saints for the next two quarters. Going up 20-7 in the third. The Eagles were able to cut the lead to 10 to close out the 3rd quarter, but trailed 20-10 as it headed into the 4th quarter and the final 15 minutes of the game. The 4th quarter began with the Saints facing a 3rd-and-1 on their own 29-yard line. Hebert tried to hit Kelvin Martin over the middle, but the pass fell incomplete and after Tommy Barnhardt’s punt and Vai Sikahema’s 12-yard return, the Eagles started at their own 36. And this is where the most dominating 4th quarter playoff performance in history begins. Randall went 5-6 on the drive converting 3 first downs and connected with Fred Barnett for the second time in the game, this time for 35 yards to bring the game within 3 after the extra point. On the ensuing possession’s first play, Seth Joyner picked off Bobby Hebert and returned it 14 yards to the 26 yard line. The Eagles marched in and took the lead with a Heath Sherman 6 yard run to make 24-20. Following the TD, the Saints had a penalty and a loss of three on a screen pass to Vaughn Dunbar left the Saints with a 3rd-and-23 on their own 7 when Reggie White beat Richard Cooper and sacked Hebert in the end zone for a safety with 5:36 left. After the kick, the Eagles ran the ball on 4 straight plays netting 33 yards before kicking a field goal with 5:36 left giving them a 2 possession lead. On the Saints’ second play of their next drive, Eric Allen stepped in front of Saints receiver Wesley Carroll and picked off Hebert and ran untouched into the end zone for a 36-20 lead with 2:17 left. In the span of just 18 offensive plays by the Eagles and Saints, the Eagles had scored 26 points. 26 points in a 4th quarter remain the most scored by a team in the 4th quarter. The Eagles’ 26 points at the time were a franchise record for any game. They’ve since scored 28 twice in a fourth quarter against the Giants in 2010, in the Miracle in the Meadowlands 2 and against the Lions 2013. It was the greatest postseason collapse in Saints history and the greatest comeback in Eagles postseason history. Even though it wasn’t the greatest comeback in the NFL that day (earlier, Frank Reich rallied the Bills from a 35-3 deficit to a 41-38 win over the Oilers). It was the only playoff win in an Eagles uniform for Reggie White, Eric Allen, Seth Joyner, Clyde Simmons and several other all-time great Eagles. Their exodus sparked by Norman Braman’s refusal to offer Reggie White a competitive contract in the early days of free agency would begin soon, but for that 4th quarter, the nucleus Buddy Ryan built before being fired two years earlier finally lived up to its potential.

Saints OL took a hit in the offseason when they lost LT Terron Armstead to FA and it took another hit last week when LG Andrus Peat was carted off and has been ruled out for this week’s game. The Eagles currently have 3 players with at least 10 sacks (Reddick, Sweat and Hargrave) and lead the league in sacks with 61. They are one shy of the single-season team record of 62, set in 1989 under Buddy Ryan. They are 11 shy of the single-season NFL record of 72, set in 1984 by the Bears, also under Buddy Ryan. The Eagles can create pressure from all across the line which could spell trouble for Andy Dalton who is much more comfortable in the pocket. Former Eagle Josh Andrews will be filling in for Peat which could spell trouble for the Saints as he will have his handles full with Cox and Hargrave. On the outside the Saints tackles have surrendered a combined 7 sacks and 44 pressures and those two will have to deal with Sweat and Reddick who have both been on a tear in recent weeks and will look to continue that Sunday vs the Saints.
Eagles Offense vs themselves
The Eagles offense shot themselves in the foot repeatedly last week. Twice the Eagles jumped out to 10 point leads against the Cowboys only to turn it over on the following possession and give the Cowboys points. Two INTs and two costly fumbles cost the Eagles the game and their change at clinching the number 1 seed this week. The Eagles were great protecting the football all season with Hurts under center, but with Minshew they had two fumbles and two INTs, none of these you can put squarely on Minshew; both INTs were ripped out of the hands of Watkins, one fumble was squarely on Sanders and the other Scott never closed his arms around the ball on the handoff. The Eagles are clearly the better team on paper, but the Saints have a talented defense and will stick in the game if the Eagles make mistakes again and turnover the football. If the Eagles want to clinch the first round seed they need to be smart and protect the football or it will come down to week 18 vs the Giants next week.
Eagles rush defense vs the Saints two headed rushing attack
After being gashed by the Redskins 7 weeks ago the Eagles rushing defense looks in much better shape and did a decent job last week holding Zeke and Pollard in check. This week they will have to face off against another two headed running attack though this one is a little bit different as it will be against Kamara and the swiss army knife known as Taysom Hill who lines up at QB, RB, WR and TE. The two have combined for 1222 and 8 TDs this season and the Saints offense is at its best when it can get these two going. Last week in the Saints’ win over the Browns, Kamara accounted for 110 of their 244 offensive yards. He had 20 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown and caught 2 passes for 34 yards. The Eagles need to continue to be stout against the run again this week to force the Saints to try to throw the football and make them one dimensional to allow the pass rush to do its thing and create turnovers. The Saints want to run and rely on the defense, the Eagles need to make them beat them with the pass this week and the first step will be stopping the run and forcing them into 3rd and longs.
Jonathan Gannon vs himself
Gannon’s defense has been good this year, but it has also been painful to watch at times when he tries to get too cute. There isn’t a better example of this than last week against the Cowboys after getting them in 3rd and 30. Rather than having his defense drop into Cover-2 and line up deep to play the stick and keep everything in front he decided to have Josiah Scott play up to make the coverage look like Cover-1 presnap and he never had a chance to get into the deep half before Hilton blew by him to catch the first down. This Eagles defense is more talented than the Saints offense at this point in time due to injuries and the Saints still figuring out the QB position, the Eagles just need to stick to the game plan and not get cute especially with backups in the game. Stop the run and put pressure on Dalton and this should lead to an Eagles win.
