Shine Of Silver Swordsman

2023.06.06 08:39 dlschindler Shine Of Silver Swordsman

"Happiness comes from a perception of life. Life is a pursuit of singular moments, experiences and sacrifices. It is the limitations of this perception that make those moments possible. For such a limitation a sacrifice must be made, a sacrifice towards a perception of death."
Raanu was the boy who read these words out-loud to his mom and dad. He was in the hospital bed when he read aloud the last speech bubble in his comic book stack. He had read the entire series of Silver Swordsman, knew every adventure as though they were his own. His parents had denied him comic books, especially violent and strange ones like Silver Swordsman. They didn't understand the giant robots and mutants and suicidal immortals of the future. It was all very frightening and disturbing content and they had not let him have such stories.
That had changed when they discovered he had a rare malignancy in his heart that would result in his death within months. Raanu was not afraid. He told his parents that since he was going to die it would make sense to let him read comic books, even Silver Swordsman. In fact, it was the Silver Swordsman comics he was most interested in.
The stories began with the boy Raanu sitting by the water with his friend: a giant robot named Unit Three-Sixteen. Raanu was the youngest human on the planet, or one of the youngest. In the future everyone lived forever and it was rare for new people to be born. New people, children, were especially interesting and cared for by the other immortals. Thus, in a world attended by some mere hundreds of giant robots with super powers, Raanu was accompanied by his very own, personal giant robot.
He asked the robot about things like war and death, things that had become obsolete before the advent of the giant robots. In all of its wisdom it could do no more than define such things. Then people came to where Raanu and the giant robot were sitting. Across the water was a temple that controlled the flow of energy in their world. Energy generated by human emotions. As long as the world had existed in tranquility and harmony there was no pain or suffering of any kind.
Raanu and his giant robot watched as the people went into the temple and used its power to obliterate themselves. The lethean energies flowed outward and corrupted the giant robots. Only Unit Three-Sixteen was unaffected, because of its exact proximity when it all started. Unit Three-Sixteen was hit the hardest with the blast of awful energy and was knocked out by it and left with its emotitronics intact, more-or-less. The others of its race did not fare so well. The other empathicals rampaged and the horror escalated as they fed on the new and horrible energy from the humans.
It was Raanu who stood up to the machines and he died a hero. His sacrifice and courage activated Unit Three-Sixteen. The surviving humans made a weapon for the last of their defenders. Thus it became Silver Swordsman, as it did what had to be done. Of the entire giant race, only one remained, for that one had killed all of its own kind in defense of the humans. And for its efforts it became a symbol of oppression and destruction, as it now stood in place of all of its kind.
That was just the first issue of Silver Swordsman. His parents had originally confiscated it and forbade him to read any more. He was an obedient child and did not defy his mother or father. Even when his thoughts made him daydream of the story, he wished away his imaginings, and focused on schoolwork.
At night when his parents left the hospital he would lay awake and thank God he was dying. He no longer had to eat his vegetables, he no longer had to do any schoolwork and he got to read all of the Silver Swordsman comics. His parents hated the books he was reading but he loved them and so they allowed it.
As he dreamed: he went to the places he had seen in the stories. So vivid and full of color and detail. The amount of adventure and action was almost overwhelming. There were many passages with strange ideas in them, the thoughts and musings of the characters, so that he often had to ask his father what was meant.
At first, his father was very guarded about speculating on the meaning of the aggregate of concepts that the books frequently struggled with. Characters had very strange ideas about death, gratitude, love, time, regret, courage, justice, perseverance, immortality, healing, warfare and truth. In short, the heroes rejected the common understanding of all of these things and replaced them with strange new definitions.
Raanu's father, Mukherjee, was a philosophical man. On one hand he put his business first so that he could provide for his family. Otherwise, Mukherjee valued wisdom and understanding and was willing to ruminate to discover the truth about something.
He paid attention to his son's understanding of the characters and their world. In the context of the stories, everything they believed made perfect sense. To his son the characters appealed for a more careful perception of one's own life. To enter the world of Silver Swordsman was to realize that life is so precious and that the struggle to survive is what appraises the value of one's life.
After one hundred and thirty one issues the series ended. It ended with the last humans standing on the precipice of the universe in the path of an implacable force. Death was certain for the characters and Silver Swordsman. They had battled all throughout the stories against increasingly impossible adversaries. Then, as the quest neared completion, it was certain that all would be obliterated anyway, in the end.
It was confusing and scary and disturbing. The entire comic book series was, in fact, quite depressing. One by one the heroes all fell against enemies that could not be defeated. Even Silver Swordsman could barely stand against the villains and was usually beaten down rather than victorious.
Mukherjee asked the man at the comic book store about Silver Swordsman comics. What he was told made it all the more frightening. The reason the comics had ended was because the lead writer was now deceased. He was diagnosed with a rare malignancy in his heart and he had walked out into a cold Christmas night and sat down in the frost to die. This was all known to the guy at the comic book store, yet the comics themselves held a unique status among fans.
Silver Swordsman comics were already rare at the time they were published. Mukherjee had to pay a small fortune for the whole series. The comic book guy had asked him why he was so interested. He explained that these comics were an oddity. They were extremely violent and creepy and filled with strange ideas about how people should perceive their lives. Mukherjee looked at him and asked:
"Is all of that different from other comic books?" He asked.
"The opposite of other comic books. Of fiction, in-general, sir." The comic book guy explained carefully. "Comic books should make you happy, laugh, thrilled and make you want more. Silver Swordsman, isn't it just this guy's weird ideas? It deals heavily with suicide and he actually killed himself. I wouldn't let my kids read this stuff, I don't even want to read this stuff."
"My son is reading these books." Mukherjee said soberly. "They make him happy."
To this the man decided to respond professionally and to make no further comments. Another man in the comic book store walked over with Wonder Woman Volume Three. He knew Mukherjee's family and said:
"That man's son is Raanu and he is dying." The friend of Mukherjee said.
"Everyone who reads Silver Swordsman finds some personal connection to it." The comic book guy recalled.
The snow was falling outside his hospital window. Raanu sighed and opened issue seventy-one. There was something he wanted to check on. He had noticed that the darkness, named Umbraeon, was already creeping across the sky in the background before Svetlana waded into the Pool Of Time. This meant that there was more to Umbraeon's arrival. Raanu had suspected that Umbraeon was always growing before anyone had noticed. He had thought that in some silent and hidden corner of the story: the most terrifying and formidable opponent of-all was growing all-along.
Encouraged to search for more clues he did so. He discovered that in some panels the characters seemed to be speaking directly to him. He read those ones with greater care. They were instructing him to do as they did, to seek the places where the silence had taken form, to find and annihilate the shadows where they were growing like a cancer. His eyes widened as he realized and said out-loud:
"It's real."
And he grinned. In these stories, death was no more powerful than lies or pain, had no more authority than gratitude or justice. In the world of Silver Swordsman, death was an idea, an illusion. If the stories were all true then that meant that they were right about death. Which meant he need not die in vain.
Mukherjee saw that his son had not slept. While his wife had gone to get lunch he asked his son:
"Have the comics kept you awake?" He asked patiently.
"Yes, father!" Raanu said excitedly. "The comics are real! The stories are all true!"
"No." Mukherjee said. "They were written by a man who was sick. The truth of those stories is all sickness."
"Who is he father? Is he sick like me?" Raanu asked.
"He got sick just like you. He chose to let himself die. I am afraid of what his words are doing to you." Mukherjee was honest with his son.
"His words have taught me that death is not worth fearing. That it is more important to embrace the moment of life. He has taught me that when it ends, all that matters is what we left behind, what we did to make the world better while we were here. That it is evil to live a life of self-indulgence. That it was such an evil that will destroy the world if we do not change our ways. When I read these stories, father, it is like a mirror. It is like it is with you, talking to my own father about life and death, about stories and truth." Raanu explained without hesitation. He had learned much from the books. Mukherjee's fears were slaughtered by the shining sword of his son's beautiful words. The father began to cry in front of his son and then he apologized.
Of all the monsters and villains in the stories only one could be held responsible like a father. Svetlana's long lost father Arvil. He was a very important villain because he had promoted ignorance of both his family and his people. He was not a singular villain but rather the sum of his society. He was a famous poet and it was he that had started the group of people that had killed themselves and sparked the end of their world.
Raanu told his own father just how much he loved and appreciated him. He knew that his own father was the opposite of the character he had in mind. Mukherjee was the enemy of ignorance and he would do anything to protect his family or save his people. The boy wished that somehow his own father's face would appear in the stories to somehow guide the last surviving heroes and Silver Swordsman to a happier destiny. Maybe in the end they could save the universe from ultimate destruction. Raanu knew that is not how the story was supposed to end, but looking at his own father it felt possible.
A month later it was Christmas and a sort of darkness stood like a black hole in the sky. The street lights flickered and the trees twisted off the snow and wandered in search of robots to devour. Marauders shed their humanity to steal immortality and feathered dragons tore the snow filled skies. In a fever he could only recall his favorite moments, grinning and laughing. He would turn and tighten only to see his mom and dad watching and he would relax and smile for them.
It was snowing on Christmas night after his parents left. Raanu had grown very weak, but his unfading smile bore his parents to their rest. Silver Swordsman stood in terrible vigil over the boy like an angel.
"When it is time...to the Temple take me." Raanu told Silver Swordsman. "I must set things right in your world. I have a job to do there."
"I know, my boy. It is almost time." Silver Swordsman towered over him in the hospital room: time and space becoming less relevant with each passing moment. The whole place seemed to stretch to fit the giant robot and the snow was swirling everywhere, inside and out.
Then a kind of silence, a sort of stillness seemed to be holding it all as a snowglobe. There in his hospital bed lay his remains. He looked at them, at the stack of comics next to his body. Then he turned and saw that the wall was as though he were looking up out of water at a blue sky. He went into this, and the light left the room behind, and went with him, and it was him, he was the light.
He sat looking at his reflection in the still waters he had gone through to be here. The ground was level in all directions and the great Temple Of Humanity stood across from him where he sat at the Pool Of Time. Beside him was the giant robot Unit Three-Sixteen.
"I knew that this would happen. As soon as I died I came here. This is where I am supposed to be. I was just there to know why." Raanu stood up and proclaimed.
"Died?" Unit Three-Sixteen asked.
"That's right, you don't know anything about death yet." Raanu puzzled out-loud. He suddenly realized he was in issue number one of Silver Swordsman, the absolute beginning of everything. With a worried look he glanced over and saw that the Cyclists were coming. It wasn't too late to put a stop to everything bad that was going to happen.
"Those people plan to die inside the Temple Of Humanity. They will release a lot of negative anima at once. It will be the end of GAIA. The world will know nothing more than hunger and suffering and you will be the last of your kind." Raanu told Unit Three-Sixteen frantically.
"I can feel your fear, Raanu. What do I do?" Unit Three-Sixteen worried. It knew something was dreadfully wrong with the scene.
"Get me to them, quickly!" Raanu commanded. The giant robot obeyed him and lifted him to its shoulder and strode to the Temple Of Humanity. Raanu was placed on the path of the Cyclists to confront them.
"You should not be here, Raanu. You are just a child, you cannot understand." Arvil told the boy. He and the rest of the first wave of Cyclists stood in robes of patterns in black and white and many wore comedy or tragedy masks of opposing shades.
"I understand exactly what you are about to do. I've seen what happens, the world ends because of you. People hate you after this." Raanu pointed at them each.
"You don't know what it is like to live the way we have, for so long. It becomes meaningless. We need this, we need a final experience." Shatia spoke up in her high voice. She took off her mask and beheld her descendant. Like a little prince, she mused.
"What you are doing will destroy the world. I have had this final experience already. It only taught me that we are all meant for more, meant to do more, say more and feel more than we do. We live in ignorance, forging our own darkness and our own silence. You have made a death for yourselves in your minds and now you intend to inflict it on everyone." Raanu, like his father, could say the truth to someone without cowardice.
"How? How can you stand there and stop us?" Arvil felt his ancient resolve weakening. As a poet, it broke his heart to hear the plain truth. It was like a gleaming sword, cutting through the nonsense that he and his followers had invented.
"I will die over and over again, it seems, until this moment is dragged out into the light of day. There is a darkness behind every panel, a silence behind every period and a shadow over everyone's head. I know, I went back and read it all again to be sure. It was here all-along. It started at the very beginning with the very shadows you are casting now. By the end, only enough light is left in all the universe for one of the last people to say one last thing. Then it all goes to darkness and death, forever." Raanu recalled vividly.
"You would have us turn back. Go back to unending misery?" Shatia asked her great-nephew. She was one of the youngest among the Cyclists.
"Both are choices. One of these choices, I have explained, is a path that will start with your deaths and never end until the whole universe is dead." Raanu nodded.
"We have a right to die." Arvil protested.
"Svetlana meets you in the future, in the past before this happens, but she never finds out why you wrote Argosy, your most famous poem." Raanu was not afraid of Arvil's cowardice. He knew the man better than he knew himself.
Arvil willingly recited his poem to avoid the explanation:
"See now this plain of spoil,
Where cowed all Mans' toil,
To sit bemused without,
Thoughts belabored in drought,
So forth she clings to East,
Or North she turns to least,
But never strays her heart,
Not fallen since the start,
And plants her seed of truth,
The sun rises as proof,
Sacred words she has kept,
How the mighty have wept."
"So what does it mean? This?" Raanu tried not to smile when he saw he had broken the character Arvil. Arvil fell to his knees as he realized he had become the enemy of his own truth. It had not occurred to him until he was confronted with the truth laid bare and obvious. There was no shadow to hide his feelings within. Death would never be an escape from his self loathing, it would only be the proof of it. He himself became the mighty one weeping at the end.
"What have I done?" He tore off his robes and flung them away. He turned on his followers and screamed a damnation upon them for standing behind him. He walked through them and left them there. Without him, many of them did the same. Some left with their masks still on, unwilling to reveal who they were.
Raanu stood there alone with his giant robot. The Temple Of Humanity was operating at low power and the surge of excitement from the boy made the empathicals all around the world stand up and chuckle happily. The giant robots were genius artisans and sculptors and architects that had sat in boredom and decline for too long. Renewal lit them up with vitality and inspiration.
Overcome with a sense of purpose and triumph: he laughed.

2023.06.06 08:27 Struggling_donut Little white shoes in front of Escondido Planet Fitness??

I might just be paranoid, but I saw two pairs of small white shoes at the entrance of the planet fitness off E. Valley Parkway tonight.
I’ve seen some shady figures in that parking lot from time to time that definitely do not look like the gym-going type, so that’s why I try to stay away from that planet fitness, but I don’t know …seeing small white shoes in front of a gym at night. It’s a little unsettling unless someone’s kids were just careless?

2023.06.06 07:03 MelasD Amelia: The Level Zero Hero Chapter 135 (End of Amelia Book 2)

Kallistus Kal had been patient.
He had bided his time— he had learned, and he had grown. He did everything right. But in return, he had only been tormented even further. He was never rewarded for his actions.
So now, he set out to seize his dreams. To take hold of his destiny. He was no longer going to remain idle. His plan had been set in motion, and now he waited. But he didn’t wait for everything to fall into place by chance.
Instead, he was going to ensure all the cascading pieces fell into place by force. If they weren’t going to fit together, he was going to make them fit together. He waited. And he plotted.
The [Hero King] raised his head as a smile spread across his lips.
“Soon, I shall see them again…” he whispered as he heard the clamoring coming from before him.
He swept his gaze over the bustling hall, and he saw the twisted figures moving. Creatures of the dark. Shadowed beings conjured from his will.
Voidlings.
And there were hundreds of them— no, thousands.
They waited with Kallistus Kal as he settled back into his seat.
“Soon, I shall return home.”
—--
But even as the [Hero King] made his plans, the world continued to move.
The Archmage King of Scholus called for a secret conference, and the Merfolk Empress began her final siege of Drazyl. A cowardly dragon hid beneath the earth, while the successor of the Grand Sage of Imbel Forest was forced to flee her home.
In the Frozar Mountains, an angel and a dragon sat down in a cold cavern and spoke for the first time in ten thousand years. They discussed things which had transpired since they had last seen each other— they talked grimly of the problems plaguing the planet, and they agreed that action had to be taken.
In Wolfwater, a blonde girl and a burly man sparred with each other on a farm as a chicken looked on. But unbeknownst to them, the blonde girl was being hunted down due to a case of mistaken identity.
And at the edge of Briar Glenn, a prisoner of war was freed from his captivity. After surviving weeks and weeks of torture, he could finally see the light of day again. All thanks to the help of a brown-haired woman. A… hero.
But, of course, she wasn’t actually a hero despite her heroics. Her name was Amelia, and she was just an ordinary restaurant owner.
Or at least, that was what she told herself.
End of Book 2
Author's Notes: End of Book 2 of Amelia the Level Zero Hero! This book focused more on the slice of life aspect of the story which I feel like was lacking in Book 1. But... in retrospect, I think I leaned too hard into the slice of life this time around. I'll try to find a better balance in the next book which I am really looking forward to. Oh also, there will be about a ten day break until the next chapter drops for public. However, Patreon will continue to be updating chapters. And since it is the start of the month, it means now is currently the best time to subscribe to catch up to the start of Book 3 :) Check it out here I don't really have much else to say other than that. I'll have another popularity poll for the end of book 2 soon. As always, thank you all for reading <3

Also, Tremere1974 who wrote the cool Bucky fanfic snippets in my comments here on HFY has been posting a pretty cool fanfiction in my subreddit. I think it's awesome and y'all should check it out. It's even got three chapters so far.
We knew the [Hero King] was coming, and others may say the Island Fortress of Last Anchorage was unprepared for his arrival, but against the [Hero King] what can anyone do? When our nation joined the coalition against him, we sent our patreon, the great Sea Dragoness Carana, not expecting to lose her within moments of the start of the battle. We also sent the majority of our military strength to fight on the mainland, who were slaughtered to the last soldier. So, to say we were unprepared is to say we failed to act. When the [Hero King] decided to take our island, the outcome was preordained, and our position at the end of a Island Archipelago meant evacuation was largely impossible, even if the [Hero King] was not using our own ships we had used to move our Army to the mainland to invade us. I found out though, that when hope seems lost, sometimes a final roll of the dice can alter the fate of the world. I Am Talia, and this is my story.

2023.06.06 06:38 Fool_growth Creating reciprocity

Many magic systems have a facially transactional model of upfront costs: in order to achieve X output (magic), I need to give up Y input (blood, etc.). Essentially the mechanisms behind it all aren't a magic-making machine but instead a debt grantor, and the mage is a grantee.
For my magic system, I wanted to use a different model, flipping it from an upfront cost to a delayed cost: I can achieve X output now, but I will need to give up Y later. To be more accurate and explain, in my universe, the planet is a sentient consciousness, and everything in and on it is a different aspect or expression of its existence. This includes humans too, and other races as well, putting that aside. Magic is going into debt with spirits, but what the spirits want is not concrete like what people want; they have wants, needs, and personalities. What one fire spirit wants is not necessarily what another fire spirit wants, and due to this very nature, studying magic becomes more about understanding the other party so you can both come to an agreement that's mutually beneficial. Spirits are broken into different classifications based on their power and amicability. Some types of spirits are attuned to certain types of magic or are inclined to make deals for certain requests more than others.
A lot of magic is reaching out and getting them to take stock and pay attention, with rituals and spells being akin to pitches or terms of a contract with reciprocity on both sides. Spirits breaking Deals come with just as much consequence as a person breaking a deal, and the punishment is equal to that of what was agreed upon. However, if for some reason you figure out how to keep delaying what you owe, eventually it will come if the deal isn't fulfilled to the letter, hence why being specific is important as well. Spirits are sometimes ephemeral; they know just as much as people do about someone that they know, or, to be more accurate, they only know what you say.and do on the very surface level and will not be able to read your heart, your soul, your intentions, and all that. With this said, it is also important to note that while spirits are not holy omniscient, they do talk to one and are careful about who they make deals with.
Essentially, karma exists in this universe, but it's more centered around keeping your word, not in a you can't lie sort of way, but more in a are you someone who makes good on their deals specifically, not always pertaining tomagic, more so what sort of person you are in this universe." A good rule of thumb is that your deals are best kept, with anyone can learn magic if they have the right knowledge, more specifically access to certain types of spirits and spirits of different calibers, so you'll have access to your local spirits of darkness, With there being many different approaches to doing magic and calling spirits, you might not necessarily have access to a greater power that embodies a different or stronger aspect of the dark with spirits not giving or allowing access to magic they deem worthy or not fit as magic can and will just not work or backfire ironically if the spirits think they're being tricked, swindled, or conned, however this generally depends on the spirits and Spirits in one area might let you do magic where others might not, but as I've said, spirits are humans, to use the broadest meaning of that word, and are capable of making mistakes and bad judgment calls.
All of this being said, I've hit a snag in that I don't know how to create reciprocity between humans and spirits, more specifically how deals are enforced and who enforces them. My original idea was that it was enough that spirits were empowered to hold their end of the bargain and that not doing so would come at a net loss, but now I'm coming to reconsider this.
There are probably a lot of things I missed, but this is it. What do you guys think? Any suggestions I know not many people are going to read this, but I wanted to give it a good old college try.

2023.06.06 06:19 Ok-Communication6045 What kind of outfits did the qaurians have before having to wear the suits

Before the qaurians had to wear the suits all the time because of there immune system. They lived on there home planet . What did they wear on there home planet . I think they had a particular outfit because all aliens in the game have a type of outfit/style that's specific to there species. The humans wear human clothes. the turian wear either business clothes if there there in politics or just not in the military. If they are in the military they seem to always wear there uniform/aormer. The asari wear tight form fitting clothes. And the salarians wear sterile almost scientist like clothing . But what did the qaurians were my personal opinion is that there pre suit clothing was kind of arabac or Indian styled clothing there style such as the head wrap which only female qaurians wore . And the elaborate patterns on there outfits they wear over there suits . Just scream Arabic/Indian to me . But that's only my opinion. What do you guys think they wore before they were stuck In there suits

2023.06.06 05:49 ChickenLordCV Disco Elysium Skills, part 3/4: Physique

Disco Elysium is a roleplaying game in which players take on the role of an amnesiac detective who has been tasked with solving a murder in the midst of a heated labour dispute. Events are resolved through skill checks and dialogue trees via a system of 24 skills that represent different aspects of the protagonist.
I'm interested in seeing which skills people who peruse this subreddit gravitate towards and in what capacity ideology plays a part, though it's hard to discern the latter with only six options, so feel free to say which skill you chose and why in the comments.

Endurance

Take the blows. Don’t let the world kill you.
Cool for: Fighters who can take a hit. Lookouts who don’t sleep. Human Batteries.
Endurance is your metabolism and circulatory system. It improves your Health – one of the two health pools in the game. It enables to survive being a cop. Who cares if you can’t aim a gun, if you can take a few bullets? Why be afraid of drugs that hurt your health if you’re a very, very healthy man?
At high levels, Endurance enables you to take a few knocks to the head, enjoy a greater quantity of drugs, and shake off a few cardiac arrests – it makes you a powerful man, who looks down on the weaklings who can’t keep up. However, cops with low Endurance are likely to struggle. The body is frail already, and the flesh of a cop will often be tested. And if it doesn’t pass, it dies.

Pain Threshold

Shrug off the pain. They’ll have to hurt you more.
Cool for: Unstoppable Fighters. Guys who don’t die. Masochists.
Pain Threshold ignores damage so you can push on, bloodied and crawling, to the bitterest end. It enables you to negate damage you would otherwise take. Even mental pain – heartache and loneliness. In fact, these things can become a thrill you seek out and perversely revel in.
At high levels, Pain Threshold turns in on itself in seriously unhealthy way, with full-on self-destructive behavior. With a low Pain Threshold, however, you will suffer too easily. Even a slap from a teenager will make you whine and complain.

Physical Instrument

Flex powerful muscles. Enjoy healthy organs.
Cool for: Muscle Men. Bare-Knuckle Brawlers. Gym Teachers.
Physical Instrument is not only your muscles and your skeleton – it is your ability to use them effectively. It enables you to do push-ups, sit-ups, knock-out punches, and 360-degree spin-kicks. It’s a one size fits all solution to thriving and surviving in a physical world.
At high levels, Physical Instrument breaks doors, chains, and bones, and it makes you laugh at the namby-pansies who can’t. You’ll be manned-up, encouraging others to curl iron until they’re manned-up too. At low levels, however, you’ll have a hard time arresting anyone who isn’t infirm or already dead. Indeed, engaging in physical confrontations could leave you in either state.

Electrochemistry

Go to party planet. Love and be loved by drugs.
Cool for: High-Fliers. Party Enthusiasts. Cops who need Lightning.
Electrochemistry is the animal within you, the beast longing to be unleashed to indulge and enjoy. It enables you to take drugs with fewer negative side-effects. It also enables you to better investigate lurid matters – if you need to understand a chemical breakdown, or talk to someone blasted out of their mind, or understand sexual dynamics, Electrochemistry is there to guide you.
At high levels, Electrochemistry makes you a man of unrestrained pleasure – an unrepentant lothario who leers at people with a bottle of speed and a plastic bendy straw in either hand. But with a low Electrochemistry, you’ll be too innocent to be effective. Without a working knowledge of drugs and sex, the city will be difficult to understand.

Shivers

Raise the hair on your neck. Tune in to the city.
Cool for: City Lovers. The Wisest of the Street Wise. The Genuinely Supra-Natural.
Shivers come when the temperature drops and you become more keenly aware of your surroundings. It enables you to hear the city itself, to truly belong to the streets. It is a supra-natural ability; old wrongs play out in present time, scenes across the city happen in front of you. But who is speaking to you?
At high levels, Shivers may make you seem mad to the outside world – as you listen to the city, you don’t listen to others. Your superiors may begin to worry. With a low Shivers, though you will seldom hear the city speaking to you – and if you cannot hear it, how can you ever save it?

Half Light

Let the body take control. Threaten people.
Cool for: High-Strung Investigators. Shoot-Now-Ask-Questions-Later Cops. Surprise Haters.
Half Light is your fight-or-flight response. It enables you to sense the way situations are about to turn. It injects palpable fear into your heart – fear that urges you act before it’s too late to act ever again; fear that makes you frighten others. It is the aggression that lets you squeeze every last drop of information out of a witness.
At high levels, Half Light makes you ultra-attuned to the world. It is perpetual fear – of your own shadow, of someone else’s name or scent. You’ll be ready, always, to pounce and physically interrogate passers-by. At low levels, however, you’ll find your survival instinct is lacking. And your methods limp-wristed. Those who respect violence will not respect you.

2023.06.06 05:27 hotasanicecube Met my first fellow traveller

After my stay at a fish camp for a couple days I crashed at Walmart to restock and hit planet fitness in the morn.
While walking into PF a guy in a caddy said “Was that you parking at Walmart last night?” Turns out I parked two spots from him. Cool dude, bought him a beer and chips and traded numbers.
Miami Traveler, can’t wait until I got 30 people named Traveler in my phone.

2023.06.06 05:25 falserings Can planet fitness send me to into collections because my credit card expired?

(Ontario)
So I have a membership with planet fitness but I always forget to cancel it.
Anyways, I recently noticed that they haven’t been taking money out of my account. I didn’t think much of it but I just realized it’s because my credit card expired in February so now I have a new card and I never updated it on my file. Can they send me into collections?
They’ve never called or emailed me telling me to pay. Last year, my credit card had declined and they sent me a text saying “there was a problem with your payment” but I haven’t heard from them this time.

Need advice from working moms! When did you return to after the birth of your first child?
Im expecting a child on November. I have been battling my finances since last year since i graduated from a new career Nursing and started my big girl job (worked as a cashier at a gas station for 7 years). worked for 1 year at a small hospital ($27.40/hr as a nurse), and luckily I have been paying for Short term disability (pays 60% of pay).
Side note: never thought i would get pregnant but i had covid in feb, took plaxovid. But the antiviral medication decreased the effectiveness of birth control and bam! April comes with all the symptoms and a positive test.
Anyways, i paid off 2 credit cards and have been on a budget plan (Thank you TheBudgetMom Miko on Insta and YT). Now my student loans is way up in the ceiling and will be resuming in September 2023. NelNet bought MyGreatLakes Student Loans and the monthly payments are over $550! This hurts my head and heart. I have been making $208 for the last year as it fits my budget. If i wasnt expecting a new life to come into my world, i would not worry as i can work more hours. I have $1200 emergency savings and $1000 saving for downpaymen toward my goal to move to the east coast. Two working adults joined income of $6150. Our current monthly fix expenses are $5224. Starring September it would be $556 with the new student loan amount. Have been trying to stick with variable of $800 (two adults and 3dogs). But now i am debating if i should birth this child, stay home for 2-4weeks and then return to work because the increase leaves me negative. So is going back to work after 2-4 weeks too early? Because i am 1000% positive diapers, clothing, medical copays, laundry detergent and stuff will increase. And 12-week maternity leave does not seem realistic to me. And i have considered day care once a week, one weeks where i have to work weekDay rather than nights.
**I dont have any family in the area, they are all in the Philippines. My fíance's family are all in the east coast. So its just me, him and our three furbabies.

2023.06.06 05:08 LuckofCaymo So my friend asked chat gpt to make a 3 player co-op scenario.

I'll just post what was said.
Absolutely! Let's dive into an exciting cooperative scenario, set within the universe of BattleTech.
Scenario: The Falling Star
The year is 3025. Your team is a band of mercenary MechWarriors, contracted by the government of the planet Aldebaran IV, located within the Periphery. An unknown force has taken control of an old Star League-era orbital defense satellite, named the "Falling Star", and has begun bombarding the planet's major population centers.
Your team's objective is to infiltrate the enemy's ground-based control facility for the Falling Star, neutralize the defense systems, and override the control of the satellite. The facility is located within a fortified mountainous region, and it is swarming with enemy Mechs and armored units.
Automated Enemies:
  1. Patrolling Mechs: These Mechs patrol predefined paths around the facility. If a player's Mech is spotted (enters their line of sight), they break their patrol pattern and pursue the player, attacking on sight. After losing sight of a player for three consecutive turns, they return to their patrol.
  2. Turret Defense Systems: Turrets are scattered throughout the facility. They have a fixed firing arc and will shoot any player's Mech entering their field of fire. Turrets are immobile but heavily armored, making them a substantial threat.
  3. Reinforcements: Each turn after the alarm is triggered (either by entering a turret's line of sight or attacking a patrolling Mech), roll a dice. On a roll of 4 or higher, a new enemy Mech is deployed from the facility's hangar and starts moving toward the players' last known position.
Victory Conditions:
Your team is victorious if they can infiltrate the control center and override the satellite controls. This requires a player to reach a specific point within the control center and spend two uninterrupted turns overriding the system (without being attacked).
Loss Conditions
The mission fails if all player Mechs are destroyed or disabled.
Remember, cooperation is key. Players should share information about enemy movements and plan their approach strategically to avoid the alarm triggering too early. Making use of the mountainous terrain for cover, coordinating attacks, and prioritizing targets based on threat level can all contribute to a successful mission.
This should give you a high-stakes, cooperative scenario with a variety of challenges for your team to overcome. Adjust the number and strength of enemy units as needed to maintain balance and keep the game enjoyable.
He then asked to expand on the fallen star campaign. There were several options created from prompts but he chose to do that scenario. Here is the expanded information.
⭐ Falling star scenario details.. The enemy loadout and total Battle Value (BV) of your team will greatly depend on the skill level of your players, how challenging you want the game to be, and the specific Mechs you have available for play. However, I can provide you with a balanced starting point that you can then adjust to fit your needs.
Let's set up the enemy forces:
  1. Patrolling Mechs:
  • Locust LCT-1V: Light Mech, known for its speed and agility. It's armed with a medium laser and two machine guns. BV around 400.
  • Hunchback HBK-4G: Medium Mech, heavily armored and armed with an AC/20 and two medium lasers. This Mech is slower but can deal significant damage. BV around 1,000.
  1. Reinforcements:
  • Centurion CN9-A: Medium Mech, balanced in speed, armor, and firepower, armed with an AC/10, two medium lasers, and an LRM-10. BV around 900.
  • Thunderbolt TDR-5S: Heavy Mech, sturdy and well-armed with a large laser, LRM-10, SRM-2, and three medium lasers. BV around 1,300.
To keep the game balanced, I suggest giving your team a total Battle Value of about 4,000-4,500. This should provide enough firepower to deal with the threats while still making the scenario challenging. For example, your team could include:
  1. Raven RVN-3L: Light Mech, well-equipped for scouting and evasion, and armed with an SRM-6 and two medium lasers. BV around 1,000.
  2. Griffin GRF-1N: Medium Mech, a good all-rounder, equipped with an LRM-10 and a PPC. BV around 1,200.
  3. Warhammer WHM-6R: Heavy Mech, packing a serious punch with two PPCs, two SRM-6s, and four medium lasers. BV around 1,700.
Remember, these are just guidelines. Feel free to adjust the enemy composition, your team's total BV, and the specific Mechs used to fit your group's preferences and the miniatures you have available. The goal is to have an enjoyable and challenging game, so tweak the parameters as needed to achieve that.
Turrets in BattleTech can come in various forms and can be armed with a variety of weapons. For the "Falling Star" scenario, it might be best to include two different types of turrets: Laser Turrets for direct damage, and LRM Turrets for long-range bombardment. Here are their suggested stats:
  1. Laser Turret
  • Armor: 30
  • Structure: 10
  • Weapons: 2 Medium Lasers, 1 Large Laser
  • Heat Sinks: 10
  • Battle Value: Approximately 150
These turrets are stationary but pose a significant threat if not taken care of. They have a good range and firepower but can't track targets that are too close.
  1. LRM Turret
  • Armor: 30
  • Structure: 10
  • Weapons: 2 LRM 10 Launchers
  • Ammo: 24 rounds each
  • Heat Sinks: 2
  • Battle Value: Approximately 200
LRM Turrets can be a threat to even the farthest targets on the battlefield. However, they're less effective at short ranges due to the minimum effective range of LRM launchers.
Turrets can't move or evade, but they're typically heavily armored, making them hard to destroy. They have a 360-degree firing arc, but remember that weapons in BattleTech have minimum as well as maximum ranges. Players will need to consider this as they move around the battlefield.
Feel free to adjust these stats as you see fit to maintain the balance and fun of your game.
The number of turrets in the "Falling Star" scenario would depend on the balance you want to maintain and how challenging you'd like the scenario to be for the players. A mix of both Laser and LRM Turrets can keep the players on their toes and make them strategize their moves more cautiously.
For the scenario, you could consider having:
  • 2-3 Laser Turrets: Positioned strategically around the facility or guarding crucial access points.
  • 2-3 LRM Turrets: Spread across the map to provide a wider coverage and to dissuade players from staying too far from the facility.
Having around 4-6 turrets in total should provide a challenge without overwhelming the players, especially when combined with the patrolling Mechs. The Laser Turrets will prevent players from rushing directly into the facility, while the LRM Turrets will deter them from staying at long range and picking off enemies without any danger.
Remember, the goal is to create an engaging and challenging scenario, not to overwhelm the players to the point of frustration. If the players find the game too challenging or too easy, adjust the number of turrets or their placement as necessary.
Edit: I thought that the idea of ai generating something like this to be really cool. I especially liked how much detail it put into the scenarios. I only posted one scenario but there were several other options.

2023.06.06 04:51 LivemoreEB New LGBT run Gender Affirming Care Electrolysis centres in Perth.

Hi Everyone, First I just want to say really sorry if this breaches any of the terms and conditions of the subreddit regarding advertising but I wanted to spread the word about our new electrolysis hair removal service that caters specifically to the gender diverse community.
Our business is owned and operated by transgender women and aims to provide the highest quality of treatment and aftercare services in an industry that is heavily profit driven and often predatory. We wanted to create a service that treats permanent hair removal as an important medical procedure and valid gender affirming care that should be held to the same standard as any other medical procedure.
To this effect, Live More: Ethical Beauty has rooms in medical centres in 3 Locations, NoR, SoR and Centrally. Across these locations we take bookings 7 days a week, 8am til 6pm.
What we Offer;
Comprehensive patient education on the procedures and open communication to reduce undertreatment. Our service is customizable to your preference, we aim to work with you to ensure you are satisfied. We carry specialised equipment and are able to treat all hair types and skin tones as we offer all three treatment techniques, Galvanic Diathermy/Thermoflash and Blend. We believe it is important you understand what treatment you are receiving and why, as well as having your say.
Treatment of all areas including GAS. We are happy to treat all areas including those seeking hair removal from the genital region in anticipation of Gender Affirming Surgery / Sexual Reassignment Surgery. Please be aware this service can only be offered to those over the age of 18. We also offer brow and beard sculpting and treatment for areas often missed in laser therapy, such as toes!
Discounts for Gender Affirming Care. We are of course happy to treat all patients but offer specific discounts for those seeking gender affirming care. Transition is hard enough without being taken advantage of by greedy franchises.
Discounts and special deals for low-income. For those on a Healthcare card, we offer a number of payment options in the form of payment plans or treat now - pay later, at heavily discounted rates. We believe issues with self image can often be a barrier to confidence and financial success and we would like to do our part to help with that. We want you treated and happy, so please email us at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) to discuss your specific needs.
Online Bookings and Cancellations. Making an appointment with us is done easily through our website booking system. This is intended to provide a convenient service that minimises human interaction as we see this as a potential barrier to patients seeking care. Bookings can be cancelled anytime from the online platform also and are fully refundable. There are no fees and no hard feelings for cancelling a session even minutes before it is due to start, as we understand life happens and sometimes appointments can’t be made. Just remember to cancel the booking before it starts to qualify for the refund!
Package Deals. We offer Discounted package deals in sets of 3, 5 and 10 and increasing discounts. We understand that hair grows in cycles and therefore so do your needs. As such these packages do not expire and can be redeemed at any time indefinitely. We also do not want you to feel locked in. If you feel you no longer feel you require treatment, or are unsatisfied with the service, or an emergency comes up and you need the money back fast. You can be refunded at any time for the full value of the remaining sessions, No questions asked!
We don’t upsell. Being owned and operated by transwomen, we have had countless unpleasant experiences with salons and laser clinics attempting to upsell essential creams and oils and $100 ‘must have special sunscreens’ that have not been shown empirically to be any better than standard products. Or pressured into treating more areas, or into signing up for non-refundable package deals that keep you locked in to a service you're no longer happy with. Or intentionally undertreated to prolong the number of sessions. We do not want this! The bookings made through our booking portal and the price quoted is the price you will pay, no surprises! We want you feeling safe and comfortable.
3 Locations,
Our SoR rooms can be found at Ellen Health Medical Centre in Fremantle. This is a well known Hub for transgender medicine. The rooms are quiet, private and wheelchair accessible. The facility offers 2 hours free parking.
Our NoR service is temporarily displaced to East Perth Medical Centre due to recent weather damage to the practice. This is a busy, fully staffed multipurpose comprehensive health centre. It offers 1 hour free parking. The new location will be updated in the coming weeks.
We also offer private booking for treatment sessions in Como. This is intended as a fully discrete service from a private residence as we appreciate some patients are uncomfortable or anxious seeking treatment in public places. This location offers one to one treatment with the electrologist and has no limit to parking. Bookings cannot be found on the online portal but can be quickly arranged by contacting us through email.
Free additional services include
Video Streaming entertainment in the chair - Electrolysis is a long, often uncomfortable and sometimes boring process. Our treatment beds are fitted to provide access to common streaming services such to provide entertainment during the procedure. After all they do say distraction is the best analgesia!
After-care service - Although always provide detailed advice regarding caring for the treated areas, we appreciate many may worry about the progress of their wound healing. It is not uncommon for people to be concerned with what is otherwise a normal healing progress - or worse fail to recognise an infection that needs treatment. For this reason we offer a service that reviews your treated area, either in clinic or submitting a picture via email so that it may be reviewed by our medically trained staff.
Transition photos - We appreciate some patients enjoy documenting their progress through transition. It is after all a very exciting time. But few of us have the good habits and discipline to keep a regular record. For this reason we offer a photo taking service. As Electrolysis requires regular treatments over an extended period of time, it is a great way to keep track of not only the efficacy of your treatments, but your transition as well!
A service by transfolk, for transfolk - We want you feeling safe and comfortable and among friends, we are on a journey similar to yourself and appreciate transition for the practical and emotionally complex journey that it is. Our staff are comfortable talking about all things transgender. If you want to seek new information or resources in the community, or vent your frustrations or even practice your vocal training in a little sing along, please don’t be afraid to ask! We are all in this together and we need to look after each other <3.
Thankyou for your time, if you have any questions or concerns please either shoot us a DM here or send an Email to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
We look forward to seeing you in clinic!
Warmest regards in this terrible terrible weather!

2023.06.06 04:45 Ecstacyismeth Guesses for each of the gorosei given their newly revealed names and positions (1086)

If you recall, each of the main planets are given elemental designations in Japanese
Mercury-litrally called the Water Star
Venus-literally called the Gold Star
Mars-literally called the Fire Star
Jupiter-literally called the Wood star
Saturn-literally called the Earth star
And so, here are some guesses as to what the powers of the gorosei will be based on what their silhouettes were.
Saturn-Some sort of Bull that can manipulate the earth and mud, or maybe time as well. Since he is in charge of science, it might be the latter.
Ju Peter-controversial, but either the algae logia or valonia ventricosa for the plant manipulation powers. Minister of agriculture, so this plant manipulation power would make sense.
V. Nasujuro-Hito Hito no mi: model Midas and he can turn people and objects into gold. Fits with his minister of finance position.
Topman Valkyrie-Since he's the bird, and he's supposed to be water, it might have some sort of elemental water bird. I have been able to find something called a boobrie that fits with this. He might be able to manipulate water and seastone or actually cause stuff like devil fruit weaknesses.
Marcus mars-A boar that can breathe fire. He can cause immense environmental damage though a conflagration.
These are my best guesses.

2023.06.06 04:10 Dadchin Anyone want to join a collaborative worldbuilding project?

Anyone want to join a collaborative worldbuilding project?

Map of current world powers (current year 2100, last updated 2060). The greyed-out nations still exist, they just aren't extremely influential.
TLDR: This is a world me and a couple others have been working on for a while. It's a setting taking place in and after 2100, when a couple of scientists successfully create a device capable of generating portals to other universes.
Too long, but read anyways:
Essentially, throughout the 21st century, things have been going a lot better for the world. Since the end of the Second Chinese Civil War in 2038 and the creation of the Unified Republic of China under the revolutionaries, creating the first successful *truly* communist state, and the reunification of Korea, the majority of wars throughout the world start to simmer down. Large Criminal organizations like the Cartels in Mexico, The Mafias in the US and Italy, as well as the PCC and Comando Vermelho in Brazil, society as a whole becomes much safer, and the UN, mostly through the US and the URC, is able to devote more effort into helping overthrow the theocratic societies in the Middle East as well as negotiating peace between warring countries in Africa. After Putin's presidency comes to an end, the Russian Federation also becomes more and more democratic and establishes much better relations with the rest of Europe and the West in general.
Corporations also begin to lose power, starting with the invention of Nuclear Fusion reactors by Chinese scientists and the US beginning to crack down on corruption and corporate influence on the government. Eventually, companies are reduced to researching inventing, and manufacturing new technologies, such as Mass-producible carbon nanotubes, single-stage spacecraft, and simulated brain stimulus for true virtual reality. Other technologies, such as atmospheric filters, are able to aid in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions(along with the new clean energy produced by fusion reactors) as well as being used to help with the gradual terraforming of Mars. The EU has already began to send construction materials to Mars in order to construct an airtight city-like colony, with many other powers having similar projects in the works.
Various regions incorporate further into unified groups, such as the EU becoming a federal state, and Brazil creates the South American Alliance, which eventually transforms into the South-Central American League, which also eventually federates. Seeing this success, the NAFTA countries in North America decide to try something similar, creating the North American Union, which is also on it's way to becoming a truly federal state.
Using newly engineered materials as well as funding from all the major world powers, the United Nations funds a project to construct a Space Elevator in Western Kenya on internationally owned land, where the elevation is suitable. They also build up a city at the base, which they name Anga, and the city quickly booms in population and becomes the UN headquarters, colloquially known as "The World Capital." This also brings a lot of political weight to Kenya and elevates its status globally.
This is the state of the world when, in 2098, a pair of scientists manage to create a device that can create gateways between worlds. The UN has prepared an expedition, after many tests with unmanned probes have been conducted, to make sure a particular calibration for the device leads to a breathable, earth-like planet.
Essentially, we want to gather a group of worldbuilders to create the worlds that they visit, as well as the characters that visit them, and the politics and wars and everything else that comes with such a project
P.S., sorry if the grammar or structure of the text is hard to read or makes no sense sense, I tried to condense the world at large into a a single post. If you need me to clarify anything about the world, just ask.

2023.06.06 04:03 Nomyad777 [PI] The Monster Kingdom (1/2)

Part 2
If you travel far enough North on the map, well above where the Civilized Nations stop because no crops grow, you'll find a mountain range. Crossing this range leads to the Monster Kingdom, though for some reason they prefer the name 'TFSU.' Yes, they prefer. The literal forces of anarchy and chaos in the universe have a government. However, ignoring that whole thing, the Monster Kingdom is fine. No armies march on them, mostly because of supply and logistical issues. The Monsters never say how they grow their own food, but given that they don't trade and millions of kobolds worth of food don't go missing every day, it's safe to say they make their own. Now, that doesn't stop the Civilized Nations to send one hero a decade to 'keep them in check.' Four decades ago, the hero closed off a mountain pass, which was supposed to cause a massive flood. Four days later, it was cleared, and the only thing to show for it were the cities that glow like the sun at night. However, yesterday, the Hero returned having burnt one of the bigger cities down. It was empty of all monsters, but the act was the first real damage they had taken in seven hundred years, since their founding. For seven hundred years, the TFSU have taken the beating of seventy heroes and simply moved on. But now. Now, millions of kobolds make up heavy 'machinery' units that march in armored, self-moving caridges that spit fire and metal. Thousands of beastpeople make up scouting and light infantry ranks. The TFSU use hellish 'guns' that hit harder than a catapult from kilometers away, all in a single 'bullet' not the size of a human's thumb. Metal birds and dragonflies join dragons as they assault cities. We poke the very literal sleeping dragon in the eye. Yet the armies don't do much. They march for our capitals and leaders, but on the way our civilians live. Surendees live. People go about their daily lives without too much change. Of course, that fact didn't stop the front line from finally crashing over my small village, located so close to the pass for a while we thought they the monsters had bypassed us entirely. The Civilized Nations had decided to send an entire legion to prevent the Monsters from getting across a nearby canyon pass. We were hit with an air-based assault with only dragons and metal dragonflies, our balista uselessly demolished by pillars of metal and flame thrown out of the metal dragonflies. I blacked out when the legion managed to shoot enough arrows to take down one of the dragonflies. I remember it crashing down onto my house... and then nothing.
-----
The elf stirred as they woke up. I'd been raised in the Terra Firma Sapience Union, so I was... less than familiar with the clothing and lifestyle the Southerners used. The elf groaned again, before their eyes shot open and they looked around, quickly settling on my frame. "A-Are you going to kill me now?" They asked, their voice shaken with fear. I let out a laugh. "If I wanted you dead, you'd already be dead." I decided to transmorph into my secondary form - a cat - to help the conversation go better. In a land where humans lived to forty, elves only lived to a hundred, and that meant that even I was older than this elf, and they were no older than thirty. The elf, to their credit, quickly figured out I wasn't pulling any mindgames. I'd heard tales from my relatives before the Kobolds founded the TFSU. People, especially when panicked, usual acted with more than enough stupidity to make the situation worse. "Where am I?" The elf asked. Their tone told me that they were still suspicious, but it wasn't outright denial of the situation. "My home," I answered bluntly. "Your village tried to fight our ground forces when they moved in, so most of them are currently under house arrest." Still in my cat form, I created a portal into my storage cavern and reached my arm through, while summoning a lab coat around my shoulders and glasses. It was a trick I had only learned to do recently. "Let's see..." I found the clipboard and brought it out, flipping to the elft's page and taping the pen against the paper. "You suffered a collapsed lung, severe burns on the right side of your body, three broken ribs and two fractured ones, shattered three wrist bones, three breaks in your right upper arm and another two in your lower arm, and on the left side you have another fractured rib and three broken fingers. Your left leg was shattered and your left foot was completely torn up. Healing magic stabilized you and surgery did the rest. You've been comatose for the past three days, and was brought to my home yesterday due to a surge in hospital patients from the seige of Trembolorne. "In terms of organ damage, that was also severe. A busted kidney, I already mentioned a collapsed lung, and your entire digestive system was... well, pulverized would be putting it lightly. Also, unrelated to the incident with the helicopter, you had cancer in your liver and kidney. "In terms of medical treatment, you've been given an IV line for the past couple days and several painkillers, and you underwent four separate surgeries. We reconstructed your organs, welded your bones to metal plates, and used a genetic printer to replace your skin. You're lucky to have gotten time with the genetic printer in the first place, you know; those things are expensive, and I mean expensive to run. Though it's all billed on the government anyway, but that just means that they'll only run it if they have to." The elf sat up in bed looking at me as I just stood on two paws on the cave floor. "Right, sorry, you wouldn't understand most of that." I sheepishly scratched the back of my head with my right paw. "Um... put this way, you were crushed by debris and we basically reconstructed your body before you died. So not necromancy, though you did get close to needing more advanced magical treatment." "Oh," The elf replied. The cat thing seemed to have helped, because they were no longer stuttering with their single word response. "Um... do you want anything to drink?" I tried to kickstart a conversation. "Where am I?" The elf asked again. I was silent for a second. "My home? It's right on the edge of TFSU territory, one of the southernmost places you can be while still being with the recognized borders. I chose this place because I like to fly out in the summer over the flowers in the forest at the foot of the mountains. Your village is a couple hour dragon-flight time away." "Mmmhm." The elf commented halfheartedly. "OK, um... who are you?" "My dragonic name isn't something most can pronounce, so my public name is just Vixie Remminie." I answered. "What's yours?"
The elf's eyes narrowed. "Why do you want to know my name." I blinked. "Because... It's a name? I'm not a Fey, you know, it's not like I can tie ancient demons to your soul and call it a prank or something ridiculous like that. Besides, you asked for mine; now I get to ask for yours." "And who says you won't just burn my village to the ground and eat me right now!?!" The elf suddenly burst out. "You monsters ruin everything! You trespass on our land, take our resources, and kill our people! All we did was try to defend ourselv-" I cut him off, and poured just a bit of attention in giving myself an aura. Blue fire licked the bottom of my vision as I rebuttaled his point. "Don't forget, you stole the land from us. We were the ones living in the wild when you razed our forests and grew crops. We couldn't even purchase land to live on! So yes, we stole what we could to survive and those who didn't starved and died! And when all was said and done, you tried to kill us and turned it into a war, one where we had no choice but to kill you back. And when we found someplace to run, a spot to hide and do our own thing with our own land? You blistering idiots sent you 'courageous heroes' to try and kill us! What for? Nothing! Just your stupid, moronic fear making, forcing you to decide to 'kill the big thing over there!' We can't even have freaking farmland, we have to grow it all in hydroponic farms and harvest thousand-year-old vines out of caves because this is all we have!" I realized that my aura was burning fully and scorching the ground around me. I let out a long sigh, and it died down. Several memories flashed through my head, but I pushed them away. "Apologies, my parents are still a... sensitive topic for me. It would be best if we just stayed away from talking about the war until the hospital has room for more patients again." "Yeah?" The elf was still enraged. Even sitting down, they were still trying to construct an argument. "You parents who killed how many? Your family killed how many more? You dragons, you monsters are nothing more than one large grouping of murders that deserve to die! As the gods will!" The elf was spitting in rage, but I recognized his determination to hold onto his worldview. It was the one thing I needed to pry away before it got out of hand. "And you elves killed how many more?" I asked in a low voice. "Can you tell me the number of kobold dens exterminated in caves, the number of beastpeople sent to an early grave in slave camps? Because I can tell you ours. My father's was two, my mother's four, and my extended family including deceased relatives is one hundred and thirty seven. "You declared war against monsters, you child of an elf," I growled. "And death the reality of war. We know. The Unification Wars weren't fought with swords and honor. They were fought with artillery barrages and death. They were fought with miniature suns and political backstabbing, with tanks and guns and submarines and warships and all the more death. "You say the gods don't like us! That's put lightly. They forsook us! Abandoned us in our hour of need. So we learned to live without them. There are no gods we pray to anymore, elfling. Only each other, our creations, and the universe itself. They don't want us, we don't need them. It's more than they deserve." My aura was once again charring the floor and I had transformed back into my dragon form, but this time I refused to cool it down. "You call us creations of death, the primal forces of anarchy? We are you. You are us. We are sapient, we are all mortals, no matter our advantages. We are bound to this dimensional plane, forced to serve our betters, and live out our lives not with earnest but with trepredition for when it ends. We are all death incarnate, because we can all die. That is just the way it is. Besides, you've wondered about my kill count; tell me, can you tell me the gods'? Can you tell me how many souls they have cut from fate for their own entertainment? No? I can tell you." I growled, moving closer until the blue flames enveloping my body threatened to light the elf's cot on fire. "More people than are alive on this planet right now." I pulled back, bottling up my aura and reverting to my cat form. "We can talk all we want about death and destruction, and I won't lie and say you aren't victims of the war; pre-unification dragons we're exactly kind and merciful to those with treasure hoards. But perhaps, I implore you to consider that maybe we both are victims of the war, and maybe we can one day work together instead of fighting each other. "Maybe, one day, we can fight for our rights against the gods." I moved into my dragon form and darted deeper into my cave, moving so fast I could hear the howl of the wind against my ears. Only when I had reached my memorial wall for my parents did I stop and take a breath and think over my conversation with the elf. We had a long way to go, but I hoped I had put a little bit of sense into him. I hoped that the world could change.
-----
When the dragon cat thing sped away, I took a moment to survey my surroundings. Only now did the effects of my first question hit my formerly-groggy head. "My home." He said. Dragons live in caves. Oooooh. I'm screwed. However, there were no treasure hoards visible from my perspective; then again, while the Monsters were stupid, they still had brains to them, and carrying me into a treasure room would probably be something they'd be able to tell was a bad idea. Pops said never underestimate you foe, A voice in the back of my head said, and the dragon even launched in a full conversation with you. You're selling the dragon very, very shor- Shut up I growled internally to the treacherous voice in my head. The cave itself was... a cave. There was a metal slab on one end, it went deeper in the other, and that was that. In a 'corner' of the jagged room there were a number of red, glowing rods attached to some kind of giant mechanism three elfs wide and six deep, but the rods glowed against the cave's light- What light source? My eyes darted around looking for one. Only now was I aware of how unnatural each shadow was, how awkward each shining rock looked, how each stalagmite could hide an entire dragon, and that was before they started transfiguring into cats. How bright the ceiling- I looked up. The bright light burned my eyes, but I needed to know what fiendish magic was in play so I could counter it. But the light didn't flicker like fire - they were far too bright for that anyway - but they also didn't have the magical circles surrounding each spell. They were... lights. As if the universe simply willed brightness into existence. Each far-too-bright-hurts-to-look-ats was placed along a main hallway clear of stalagmites running from the metal slab deeper and around a corner where I couldn't see. The lights were only poised above this one hall, and they just... shone one the rest of the cave. Looking closer, I could see thin black lines, too thin to be mana feeds, running along the walls to both the glowing red rods and to the so-shiny-the-lit-up-the-cave. And... that was that. There was no massive pile of treasure in the hall, though I suspected the dragon kept their hoard deeper than... wherever I was. There was no pile of skull trophies or the banner of cities and armies slain, and I noted that while he had told me his parents', the dragon had never told me his own. Then again, the cat thing could be lying. Dragon transfigured into a cat. Probably has Circle Of Truth around his entire den. Nonsense, dragons can only do elemental magic. Evidently not. Would you just shut up already? No- I moved my attention back to the metal slab, cutting off whatever the voice in my head had to say about my current situation; it wasn't every day one just got kidnapped by a nation of monsters, after all. The slab was truly elegant. It was painted with the monster language, and then was painted with some kind of mural. I could barely make out a blue circle with green splotches on it surrounded by twelve rings in the bottom corner because most of the door was taken up by a ice-blue cat with lighter strips engulfed in blue fire. It was a mural of the dragon cat thing. That didn't stop it from being pretty, and someone had obviously put a lot of effort into it. The flames looked realistic from what I had seen minutes ago, and the cat's details were perfectly engraved. It was... acurrate. Yeah, because I think Vixie was just trying to tell you that they built their civilization for a reason, and it wasn't carnage. You don't know what you're talking about. We both know I do. How else to you think- Listen to me, you treasonous voice of a- No, you listen to me, you pathetic excuse for a brain. The dragon was able to hold and win an argument with you, fixed your wounds that would've been a dead write-off for any other hospital, and then you think SHE barely meets the threshold for sapient? THE ABSOLUTE MORON I'M ARGUING WITH IS THE ONE YOU BARELY MEETS IT!!! You moved to your frontier village because the world was changing, Lazerot the Sixth. Congrats, you were right. It did change. Now shut your OVERSIZED EGO up at being bested by a creature ten times older than you, and go appologies before they decide that saving your life wasn't worth it. I... I... OK- No. I'm in control now. Shut up. I....... yes, sir. Good. With new resolve, I stood up. My head throbbed, and the next thing I knew was my face hitting my cot again.
-----
When I heard the thud of something falling in the entrance cave, I carefully moved back into the entrance cave. The elf was face-down in their cot, unconscious again. It looked like they had tried to stand and just.... fallen over. I sighed and used a claw to nudge the elf back onto his pillow, and then covered him with a blanket. I watched him for a minute, and then returned to the deeper parts of my home. The TFSU was completely overloaded with the number of patients needing treatment. Apparently, the Southener's hospitals just... didn't do anything, so in addition to soldiers, there was a massive influx of civilians to our hospitals too. Of course, this meant that they were absolutely overloaded, and the Civilized Nations strategy of fighting to near-death and then surrendering wasn't helping. So, stable recovering civilians like the elf were just... shipped out. When shelters filled up because the Civilized Nations overpopulation crisis was too bad to do anything, people just had to take them into their homes. Long story short, the government was in way over their head attempting upgrade the standard of care in the Civilized Nations while occupying their territory. My job so close to the border was remote infrastructure maintenance, and my ability to change size while not dissolving made me an expert at it - and that was before my two hundred years of experience. And then I didn't need a vehicle to get on-site, and was fast. The alarm pinging me that one of the space radars was down again gave me an excuse to avoid the elf and do some work. I grabbed a pack of supplies, put on my shapeshift-compatible uniform, and wrote down a note on a piece of paper. On my out past the sleeping elf, I dropped it for him.
Space radar system needs repair, as it's returning a false positive. It's my job to repair all the infrastructure around here, so I need to go fix it. I'll be back soon. If you're hungry, my pantry is the first cave on the right. You can just eat anything that's easily open-able in there. If it has a lock or airtight opening mechanism (anything more than a clip, really) then don't eat it. If your thirsty, there's a stream in the entrance cave near the heaters. When the door mechanism beeps, step back. Sometimes pressure in the cave can get a bit wonky, and I don't want you to get hurt. Other than that, feel free to explore. I've locked all the doors to the rooms I don't want you to enter. For toilet necessities, the second cave on the left has a properly-sized toilet. And running water, but stuff I can explain later means don't drink it. See you soon! - Vixie.
Satisfied, I left opened the door. There was a puff as the air from inside flowed out to the lower-pressure atmosphere. I could spot a snow squall to the north, and the pressure meant that it was probably coming my way. I moved out onto the ledge and closed the door behind me. At high altitudes this far north, the air was already near-zero and it was still five in the afternoon. I took just a second to confirm with the weather report that the snowstorm was in fact going to arrive on my doorledge using a smartwatch I had strapped around my wrist. When I found that the storm was coming, I opened my wings and flew. Being an Ice Dragon had its advantages, but being a Water-Ice Combined Dragon was much better. The frosty air curled around my wings as the freedom of ignoring gravity filled my brain. Ice and Water dragons both had large wings to deal with the cold air (and lower pressure leading to the requirement for more surface area to achieve the same amount of lift) and incompressable water physics (to let the wings act like a one-way fan blade as they move back and forth, increasing efficient). Dragons might be magestic creatures, but we were still bound to the physics of the mortal plane, after all. Being part of both, my wings were even bigger, making me one of the best high-altitude fliers on the planet. The ability to use both gills and lungs at said altitudes helped with oxygen also helped. Air Dragons were better at flying in normal air, but I liked to think of it like stats from a video game. Air Dragons min-maxed their stats for low-altitude, but I could go anywhere - even underwater - can keep my speed relatively high. I took full advantage of this on my way to the space radar, soaring well above the cloud ceiling and to the point where I could make out the curvature of the planet below me. The ocean spread out to my west, while more land was to my east. Snow covered the north as to the south was the telltale splotchy color of industrialism. My smartwatch beeped, as I crossed the normal altitude limit. I hadn't realized I'd gone so high; I had a radar to repair, after all. I dove down towards the surface, ignoring more beeps as I crossed half the way to the speed of sound. The wind howled angrily in my ears, but I flattened those (thank you, streamlined water genetics) and came out of my death dive right over the radar. The repair itself went relativity smoothly, though I couldn't find a broken component and chalked it up to more space anomalies. They weren't infrequent, and usually marked where the gods decided to look over the planet. For my radars, anyway. Further north, ignoring the north pole, almost no gods came out and wanted to deal with us. Our unspoken agreement was held that way. I flew straight back for my return journey. The storm was definitely closer, but fifteen minutes of flying later and I was entering the opening mechanism for my door. As it swung inwards, I heard the high-pitched scream of an elf.
-----
When I awoke, I found myself tucked into some covers. It took all of seven seconds for reality to catch up with me. Right. I got into a heated argument with a dragon. I instinctively touched the part of my face that had been closest to the dragon's flame. I'd read about Auras in books, but never thought I'd get to see one. They were only ever found in the most powerful and competent individuals of a race in an entire plan of existence. I wondered which skill gave the dragon hers - Vixie, I reminded myself. Either way, given that Auras are technically illusions, I wasn't hurt. The flames didn't get close enough to hurt anyway, but that didn't stop me from checking. This time, I was much more careful when I stood up. I sat up first, then started to kick my legs back and forth. That's when I spotted a paper on the other side of my cot. I stood up without thinking, but managed to keep my consciousness this time and moved towards the note. It was handwritten and contained a lot of jargon that I wasn't familiar with. Space. Radar. False positive. Airtight opening mechanism. Heater. Beep. Pressure. Toilet. Running water. I could deduce some of it. A message had come in requesting the services of the local dragon to repair a thing that has an issue, and that she would return shortly. I could wander around as I pleased, besides eating food that wasn't open or contained in a clip bag. From the tone of the message, I could deduce what a 'toilet' was. The heaters would logically be things that produced heat, so all I had to do was look for those. I wasn't able to tell time, but I supposed at this point it didn't matter. I moved over deeper into the cave, and quickly heard the sound of a stream. It led directly into a forest of stalagmites. After clambering over those, the temperature started to increase, which was all I needed to know that I was getting a drink of water. I was only now catching up to the fact that I had been out for three days, and that meant that I was extremely thirsty. I wasn't sure how I wasn't dead of dehydration at this point. I found the stream next to the glowing metal rods, and with it a clear path to my location. Sighing slightly at the wasted effort on climbing through Rock Forest, I snatched an undersized cup off a rack built into a nearby jut in the cave wall and filled it, before entering the bliss of fresh water. Back in the village, we had some of the best and cleanest water in all the land thanks to snow melt, but this took that to a new level. Cold, crisp water melted in the sun only minutes ago. It was... pure. I spent the next couple minutes simply drinking and processing everything over in my mind. The gods might have willed the monster dead, but if even the monster gods had abandoned them and survived... then how come the Pantheon never told us? Religious issues aside, there were more practical issues regarding my own survival. How did I get out. There was a thud at the metal slab, and I moved back towards it, leaving my cup to dry on the rack I pulled it from. The engraving of the cat on the metal slab was- BEEEP! What was that sound? There was a hiss, and the slab started to peel away. A gust of frigid cold air washed over me as a mage Ice-Water hybrid Aura-capable dragon that I had argued with stared me down. I did the instinctive thing and let out the scream of a human three year old, squeezing my eyes shut and waiting for the final blow. When the end of my life didn't arrive, I reopened my eyes to find the sky-blue cat standing in the hole where the metal slab was supposed to be. Then there was another... sound, and the metal slab started to move back into position. The cat was surprised for a single moment before simply charging the door and jumping through, skidding to a halt right in front of me. Which meant that I got a closer look at her. Ocean-blue strips crossed an ice-blue body fur in a fifty-fifty ratio. Small crystals of ice twinkled, floating here her wings would be. One tail was accompanied by two more made of pure blue-white energy, and the cat even had a halo. Six orbs of blue-white light hovered in lazy circles around her back, and even in a diminutive form the size of a cat the being radiated the power of an aura-capable creature. "Oh, right, sorry," Vixie said, and all the ethirial energy disappeared. Now that I knew what I was looking for, however, I could just barely tell, using my power as a mage, that Vixie was using illusion magic to hide her true energy. "You don't need to hide your reserves," I said. "Though if you're shapeshifting into forms so small that you need to expose yours, then you should just burn yours instead. It's not worth the trouble of people bottling yours." Vixie gave some kind of half-shrug. "They're not reserves, no." She said, emphasizing the word. I looked at Vixie with a sharp look, and for a second I forgot I was talking to a dragon. "Then what are they?" "They're..." The cat blushed, something I wasn't even aware was possible. She let the illusion fall away, and the tails, crystals, orbs and halo returned. "They're my regenerative baseline minimum." I looked her up and down for a second, dumbstruck. She really is a creature of power, huh? "Um.... uh..." I stuttered. "Is... that where you get your aura from?" I asked. Vixie closed her eyes with an expression on her face, and this time green flame started to peel off her. "Part of it, yeah." To control an aura like that... two auras. Just how powerful is she? I was so deep in thought that I didn't realize that the expression on her face was pain. "I... uh... what happened?" I asked, shellshocked. "Why aren't you fighting in the war?" The worldwide-powerful dragon masquerading as a cat sighed. "I... haven't told anyone. It's... personal." "I..." Only now did it hit me that I was talking with a dragon, not another person. Not just a monster, but a... creature with emotions. "You don't have to tell me." I quickly backtracked. "No, no, it's a fair question. It..." The cat let out a chuckle, and it filled the cave with a beautiful sound. "I suppose it's kind of ironic... but it starts with a kobold and a god, back when the Firma kobold tribe decided to travel north to escape the civilized nations, shortly before the amassing of all creatures in these same northern mountains and the Unification War. "Back before the gods forsook us."
Original Prompt: [WP] For as long as all the races have known, Dragons have been seen as violent, destructive creatures. After an attack on your village, you black out and find yourself in the den of a dragon. It's rather annoyed that that is how they're seen, and wants to prove that isn't the case.
u/Lycan_Jedi thank you for the prompt!

2023.06.06 03:12 theblitz6794 A huge war is about to start

A huge war is about to start
Tensions are very high on the planet. A massive war is about to begin. I got a bad feeling nukes will be used.

A large mega Europe - Greater India alliance led by the Resistance bisects Eurasia while the Servants control China and the Aliens control Iran, Korea, and South America. In the USA mercifully the Academy is dug in whilst the other factions fend for scraps in south east Asia and Africa. Yeah, the Servants got China and there's a huge Alien fleet overhead, albeit under the watchful eye of 27 fusion powered coilgun destroyers....with only 1 drive each because I built them before reactor 3. It was a tense situation and I didn't know if shit would start.

How did it come to this? Look, I usually play KazUSAChina. But its fairly boring and USA is quite limited. USNA sucks compared to any other megas. Sure USA is a great beatstick but I rarely need to beat anything. Just an alien invasion...sometimes. Europe has so much more potential. Surely it can muster enough forces....right? As it turned out actually yes, but that's not why we're here. See, I always try to secure Russia. It has a tone of nukes I've heard. If you're going Europe, why not? It made a bunch of extra MC for me (of course Europe came first so Ukraine joined Europe. Slava Ukrani). I intended to slowly creep into China as my CP cap raised and I was at 2 when the Servants played for it. Shit.

I found them for it but the Ayys came in. Oh, another thing. I'm a fusion rusher. Zeta Boron or bust. So I was dumping all my research into fusion. Normally just as the techs get really hard, China comes online. But....I never researched the security related techs so the projects never appeared. The aliens enthralled China faster than I could take it back. Eventually they kicked me out and I was in doom mode: The Servants have China and the Protectorate has India. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.

I pondered splitting European states off. I have the CP limit....I could split Hungary and other regions without resource/core....I could spam MC...it could work...no. If I can't have China I must must must play for India. So I did and I slowly wrestled it from the Protectorate. The Servants started fucking me hard there too but I killed 2 aliens and eventually secured a screwed up India. Oh, and a war started because the Aliens decided to start bombarding my European army. The Aliens damn near got Paris but I was able to rally and destroy 6 armies for the price of 2, all without nukes. Bless the gods. My armies were 7.0 vs 7.7, a closable gap with stations and councilors, but now it's 6.6 vs 8.2 because I united Europe with Russia and then the energy crisis fired. I actually gained GDP but inequality and cohesion tanked so I can't tech up.

They have 6 8.2 armies and a horde of 3.7s. I have 9 6.6s bolstered by .3 in space and .37 from councilors. I will have to defend rugged/core regions to have a chance but I think I can do it. Oh yeah they have a lot of nukes. I disarmed China but it's easy peasy for China to rebuild.

Here's praying my destroyers can contest the space or my battleships with fusion 3 drives can complete in time. Tensions are high. But I think I will be the one to break the tension.

2023.06.06 02:28 sailormoon5447 Loose Skin Issues

So, I'm 26F, 5'5''ish, SW: 323lbs, CW: 289, GW: 250. My Ultimate Goal weight is between 175-190, but i have a better time not getting overwhelmed if i break it into chunks. I'm losing weight pretty steadily, maybe 1-2 pounds per week. Most of it has been with calorie deficit (i eat about 1900-2000 calories per day) and exercise as tolerated (i have chronic pain issues, some im sure are caused by weight but others definitely aren't, hoping this improves as i continue to lose weight). I don't mind the slow and steady approach, i've been told it's more sustainable that way, and i find it helps with my overall goal in having better wellness in all areas of my life.
Here's the issue, and maybe i'm just being crazy, because 30 pounds hardly seems like anything comparatively speaking, but i swear i'm seeing loose skin, particularly in my arms and my stomach. I'll be honest, I dont really care about my arms, but my stomach is.... I've always had an apron belly, but i swear it's hanging significantly lower than before. I'm worried about it sagging all the way down to my knees or worse (which i don't know if that's even possible), and i know there isn't anything really to do. The body cant snap back to the original shape and all that sciency stuff, But i want to know if there's a way to mitigate the problem in the meantime.
Now, I am planning to eventually have surgery to remove the loose skin on my stomach. It's medically necessary, I get those horrible rashes in the skin folds despite having a rigorous hygiene routine. So, what's the problem, you may ask, if you're just going to get it removed anyway? I am vain and have pretty severe social anxiety, and will isolate myself from going out places if i feel "ugly" or feel like i look funny and people are cruel (Can't go to the planet fitness near my house anymore since some asshole record me) i just... want to know if other people experience this fear??How do you deal with it? Is there anyway to lessen loose skin?
i've already let my weight dictate too much of my life, and i don't plan on letting it continue to. I was just hoping to hear others thoughts and knowledge in the subject.

2023.06.06 02:28 asylumletters What to do on my first day?

Hello! I (24F) recently signed up for planet fitness via the app instead of going in and applying. I was currently wondering if there were anything else I had to do via in person before I can just go and sign in and work out just like that. I know in the past you had to go in and have them take your picture and etc. But I don’t know if they do that still. The reason I’m asking is because I struggle with TERRIBLE anxiety about looking dumb in front of people and the thought of just waltzing in without anything else done scares me a lot. What should I do? Am I good to go? Thanks!

2023.06.06 02:24 Fabulous-Letter-5649 Engineer retires, and is replaced with a Human. (Pt 3)

Pt 1 If you haven't read it yet.

Pt 2 If you haven't read it yet.

Hope you enjoy Pt 3 and happy reading!

I had finally shown Will to his quarters and just I was beginning to leave he said,
"Oh great stars this is just wonderful! See I told you that housing is something the Federation can get right with humans!" He said eagerly and beckoning me to come inside.
Will's quarters were not of an exceptional size, no bigger than everyone else's, but still, it's a significant improvement over what he had been living in, Exploration ships are known for their far superior accommodations compared to naval ships, easily twice the size of the standard naval quarters, and you don't have to share it.
"Oh well this is just truly wonderful! You truly must see this! " He said once more.
"Well if you insist!" I said quite awkwardly as I shuffled through the door after him.
What was special about his quarters were the decorations, as Federation quarters are always set up prior to the arrival of the occupying individual, so all the decor was already there. Adorned in a human manner, with Earth plants, hardwood flooring, and an overall warmer, Earthy, color palette was selected.
In the quarters was a main room, with human furniture, a sort of, elongated seat that could fit at least three others side-by-side, lots of little tables with all kinds of colorful vegetation, though green seemed to dominate the selection.
"Would you like a tour! I made sure to have picked out everything before hand, you know that's not something you usually get to do on naval vessels so I wanted to take full advantage!"
"As long as I can get back to my post soon, I already wasted enough time because of that little accident you had with the synthesizer." I was quite frustrated with him, it was a relatively new emotion for me, for what it's worth I think he's a great guy, but oh galaxies is he ever annoying.
"Yes yes yes, I assure you everything can be done in time." I doubted that but went along nonetheless.
"So here's the main room, this is my lovely couch" gesturing to that odd chair of his. "And across from is a nice TV for me to relax when I get off my shift." I'll grant this to Will, he's a very enthusiastic person, which makes it very difficult to say no. Like Xor'Xoj my pet Tlonker from way back when I was a juvenile, just couldn't say no to it.
"So a TV is where you watch "Magic School Bus?"" I asked.
"Well, not just that, all kinds of other shows, movies, and I can play games on it too. Really all too much for me to go in to with our limited time."
"And here are the other rooms" Will pointed to this one room with a table and a synthesizer. I followed him in.
"This is where I'll probably be taking my meals, though I may occasionally join you all in the Cafeteria."
Stars, he was running all over the place. Where was he getting all that energy from? I thought to myself, but it was probably just another item to add to the ever-expanding list of weird human things. Will was growing on me, he just seems so... joyous. He had a certain care-free attitude, an eagerness, he just could flip like a switch, going from being all fired up and angry to happy, to in pain, to funny, to serous, and back to happy again, and sometimes he did several simultaneously. I'd never seen anything like it. I mean, it takes a lot to change the baseline mood of a Zorxian, meanwhile I'm left wondering if humans even have a baseline mood!
"So here is my bedroom!" He said just absolutely pleased with himself over his decoration job.
"Oh my galaxies what is that! What is that!"
On this large rectangular piece of foam and other things, which was adorned with fabrics of all different kinds, was a little black animal that had been startled underneath the structure these materials rested on.
"Oh that's just Kepler, she's my cat! She is just the cutest thing in the whole wide universe, isn't she!" Will was making this weird high pitched voice, not like the last time though this was different something about the way he spoke.
"Why are you doing that voice?"
"Oh that's just... gosh... how do I explain it... it's a human thing that we do whenever we talk to something that we think is cute."
"Can I see it? The cat I mean, it ran away under that weird structure in the middle of your room."
"Oh that structure, it's my bed, it's where I sleep."
"Sleep?"
"I'll get to that later but my communicator keeps going off. The captain is pissed about the whole power incident and how long this trip is taking already. Anyways, you wanted to get a closer look at Kepler?"
"What?! I need to head back to the bridge like, right now! And why isn't my communicator going off?" Just as will had started to grow on me just like that I was back to just absolutely fed up with is antics.
"I think the captain just figured that communicating with you is a futile effort since I probably won't do a good job obeying. Plus I'm kind of at the center of all this." Will was laughing! The captain was furious and he was laughing! That care-free attitude may be cute but oh was it ever annoying.
"Ok I'll just show you Kepler and we'll be on our way- you know what I'll just show you a picture!"
Opening up a picture on his TV revealed this innocent seeming pet to be a viscous monster, with huge claws and massive, fang like teeth that thing was a killer!
"OH MY PLANETS! OH! LOOK AT IT! OH! NO! JUST NO! AREN'T YOU AFRAID I'LL KILL YOU?!?!?" I was awfully distressed, more so at its implication for the safety of the rest of the crew, by this point I couldn't care less what happened to Will.
"Oh it's harmless! It spends most of its day sleeping, though it's a bit closer to what you would call hibernating. Well... sometimes it'll get a little... playful, but nothing more than a simple scratch, besides, she'll just stay here, in my quarters." This did little to reassure me, and I did NOT find it cute.
"Ok, now that we're done... with that let's just... quickly get back to the bridge..." All while Will was talking he was pausing to laugh! We'd be lucky if Captain Reloxyn doesn't re-assign us both to the second shift! I was panicking, I now think I know what Will means when he talked about being driven crazy by his co-workers, and... wait... HE was the one being driven crazy! I can't imagine how all those poor co-workers felt having to deal with is antics for so long!
We both ran, me at a full sprint, Will was having no issue keeping up, in fact he was skipping and I'm going to borrow a human word here but that little shit was skipping! How does he do it?! I get he's a human but how in Orion's name does he do it. How, under such a laid back exterior somehow lies some brilliant engineer, but I suppose I'd get a first hand look in if I get put on a scouting mission with Will, which I doubt, with what I already know about him he'd probably blow our cover before we could even get preliminary scans done!
When we got back to bridge Captain's hair was, you know what, I'll let his interaction with her speak for itself:
"Oh hey captain! You seemed to have calmed down, your hair isn't colored anymore!"
"THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S GONE INTO THE ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRUM YOU INSUBORDINATE NERVE PAIN!"
"Oh..." Will responded, all the care-free joy draining from his face.
The rest of the bridge had gone silent in fear of incurring even but a fraction of her wrath.
"Well... I can explain..."
"OH GO RIGHT AHEAD I CAN'T WAIT TO HERE THIS."
"You see... I had just wanted some water when I got to my office..."
"AND YOUR FIRST THOUGH WAS TO CRACK OPEN YOUR SYNTHESIZER?!"
"In my defense I was quite thirsty, and as a matter of fact I still am..."
"One of you! Get him a glass of water!" She clapped her tentacles together, Captain Reloxyn was NOT playing around with Will.
"Now, when I was but a hatchling, I used to hang out by the human dockyards of Cirsium-4 and I picked up a few human words, so, WHAT THE ACUAL FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?!?!"
"I wanted a glass of water..."
"THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU GOT TO YOUR QUARTERS!!!"
"Well, I had successfully made the same modification on what I thought to be the same kind of synthesizer on FSS-109, but I now know the wiring is totally different."
The Captain thought for a long time, long enough to slowly, but surely calm down.
"SINCE the issue was just contained to your office, I think the wise thing to do, especially since you're new here, is to let you off with a warning, don't try and pull a stunt like that again, and at least have some respect for my time or the future consequences are going to only escalate from here."
The entire bridge, and I mean, entire bridge let out just a massive sigh of relief with her surprisingly merciful judgement, and to this day I'm surprised the doors weren't blown off by the air pressure caused by all that exhaling, but I suppose all that yelling had calmed Captain down, as by the end of her conversation with Will, her hair was undulating a healthy turquoise.

90 Solar Periods Later:

After completing the survey mission of the Ix system, we had noticed that Ix-5 was harboring a pre-FTL society, just turning the corner into the Atomic Age thanks to their recent discovery of nuclear power, me and Will were assigned to do the scouting mission, blend in with the locals, get some intelligence, just standard protocol. Ix-5's Earth like environment had much of us worried about going down, hence Captain Reloxyn's decision to assign Will to the mission, and I was assigned thanks to my endless experience on pre-FTL scouting missions in an attempt to counterbalance Will's... inexperience.
Situated in a high-altitude orbit as to avoid detection, we readied the landing shuttle for the mission, it wasn't exactly small, with about the same living area as the standard Explorer-Class Quarters like the ones on our ship, the only difference is that we would have to share it, and the flight deck took up some of that room, so, a little tight but we'd be fine.
Will had packed some things to bring with him, just a camera, some equipment, and a photo of Kepler, who I still didn't trust.
"Let's get this show on the road!" Will exclaimed with that usual twinkle in his eyes.
"Let me guess, It's a figure of speech."
"Naturally."
*FLICK* "Switching to internal systems." I had started the un-docking procedure.
*FLICK* "Decoupling"
*FLICK* Separation"
The shuttle produced a loud THUNK indicating a successful separation
"T-7 seconds to minimum clearance" While Will had said this with a tone of professionalism, he had that stupid grin on his face, and that glint in his eye that said all I needed to know.
"Main Engine Start!" I said once the timer had run down to 0 while hovering my hand over the button that would tell the guidance computer to begin the de-orbit burn.
*Click*
The shuttle's engine came roaring to life, both of us being shot forward by the acceleration, only being stopped by our seatbelts.
"WOO HOOO!" Will shouted, overcome with excitement at the prospect of stepping foot on an uncharted world.
The rest of the descent was pretty calm, running through checklists, taking weather data to find a safe re-entry point. Floating around in Zero-G. So mainly we just talked.
"So, how has everything been in navigation?"
"Oh, just the same old same old, plot a course here, plot a course there. Nothing special."
"Wish I could say the same for Engineering." Will chuckled.
"We've had some close calls down there, nothing you should be concerned about." Will was doing a barrel roll.
"Really, like what?" I responded, mildly concerned.
"Well, we don't normally talk a lot about the minor stuff, just trying not to cause any panic, but we did have one instance where a small asteroid, only weighed a few grams, but we were exiting from jump so our relative velocity was... very, very high, so even something tiny like that can do a lot of damage. Shields were still spooling up though and it slipped through, but thankfully the jump drive was still generating its gravitational field so it got pulled away, it passed just 5cm from the hull."
"Oh my." I was absolutely astonished, I had no idea these events were taking place.
"What's the likelihood of something like that happening again?" I asked him, hoping for an optimistic response.
"Well, after it happened we launched an investigation and made the required fixes, the reactor had to be upgraded to produce more power so we could run the shields while we were spooling the jump drive down, so it won't happen again."
"That's reassuring, happy to hear that." I responded, relieved at his answer.
"So how's everything going with your family?" Will asked.
"Oh, you don't want to hear about a dangerous close call we had in navigation?" I said, laughing throughout.
"No I'm just messing with you, we don't really have those, but my family is doing great thanks for asking! My brother is going to be signing up as a maintenance apprentice aboard FSS-203 so that's exciting!"
"Wow they're already up in to the 200's?! Man, I only left 90 days ago and we were at what, 150?"
"Remember what you said to me, when you first got here? "If you want peace, prepare for war.""
"Yeah something like that." Will grunted as he pushed himself off the wall and floated over to the food designed for use on the shuttles.
"Hey, care for a toast of... lets see... Nutrient drink. Never mind."
"You humans, you're just picky eaters, it's not that bad." I responded half jokingly.
"Oh I assure you they are indeed "that bad" it tastes like rock."
"You humans and your taste." I replied, in a sarcastic manner.
"Well, my family is doing... okay." Will trailed off.
"Could you care to elaborate." I turned myself around to face him.
"Well my brother is just... an absolute asshole. My sister is great, just a wonderful person but, oh great Orion's Belt is Mike just about the most asinine human you'll ever meet."
"Oh really?" I was rather intrigued.
"We never really were friends, he and his stupid friends picked on me, bullied me for being... different. It was just horrible, but you know, one day I saw a recruitment poster for the Federation Corps of Engineers, and a lightbulb went off, and here I am now" Will by now had floated back to the flight deck and just stared off into the abyss, his eyes were getting watery.
"And now I'm what, more than 150,000 light-years from home exploring the Large Magellanic Cloud." Will let out a small chuckle.
"Are you okay? Are your eyes okay?" I asked noticing how they pooled up in his eyes instead of falling due to the absence of gravity.
"Yeah I'm fine." Will said, wiping his eyes.
"I didn't know it was like that."
"Oh I've gotten everything sorted now, everything's okay now, has been since I joined, and this new job is going great, haven't regretted switching in the slightest." His usual demeanor had returned.
"Now, let's get ready to land!" that sparkle returning to his eyes and that stupid grin began to form as he positioned himself back into his seat.
"Ok... just have to look over some weather data... hold on... here's the population scans... okay, I'll have to feed it into the computer to double check but right here seems good." I said, pointing to an ocean.
"We'll enter here, and glide over to here" I slid my hand over to an island.
"We can cloak the shuttle and just make our way over to the nearby city, once we get our disguises of course." I was tapping one of my fingers on the screen over a city.
"Disguises? What kind?" Will responded, leaning toward me.
"Oh just some prosthetic makeup, the inhabitants aren't to dissimilar from us, so minimal work is required."
"Wonderful. You've done this how many times before?"
"32, but none with planets this advanced."
"Hey, you remember what I said before undocking?" Will mentioned, turning to me with a grin both bigger and more stupid looking than ever before.
"Let's get this show on the road!" I replied with the same level of enthusiasm as he had just a few hours prior.

Figure this is a good stoping point, hope you've enjoyed so far! Pt 4 will be up tomorrow and that should have some ol' fashioned humans are space orcs action sequences! Thanks for reading!
